Quick answers — read this first
What does a 10% fragrance load mean? Ten grams of oil in every 100 g of finished candle20 g of oil and 180 g of wax in a 200 g candle, 12 g and 108 g in a 120 g jar, 7 g and 63 g in a votive. Against the wax it is 111.11 g of oil per kilogram.

Is 10% the maximum? It depends which page you read. On CSI 464 it is: the page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". On Chunks it is the recommended figure inside an 8–13% range, and on CSI 468 it is three points below a stated 13% ceiling.

What does it cost? ₹56.64 to ₹152.92 of oil in a 200 g candle across the five oils costed here. Moving from 8% to 10% costs ₹9.30 to ₹28.55 a candle net of the wax you no longer buy — and a 1 kg bottle that made 62 candles now makes 50.

Will it smell 25% stronger? No. Twenty grams is 25% more oil than 16 g, but perceived strength does not rise in step with concentration, and cure, wick and pool matter more. Test it: three jars at 8% against three at 10%, scored blind at day 14.
The short answer
Read your wax page before you weigh anything: 10% is a ceiling on one CSI wax, a recommendation on another and mid-band on a third. At a ceiling there is no headroom left, so the wick and the cure have to be right rather than nearly right.
Check the oil page too, and take the lower number: 14 CSI oil pages state "Up to 10% for soy wax", 20 state "6-10%" and 26 state "7-10%" — all of which reach 10%. But "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" on 14 pages does not, and Fresh Strawberries states "6-9%", which rules 10% out.
Buy 10% as a decision, not a default: it costs a quarter more oil than 8% and reduces what a 1 kg bottle covers from 62 candles to 50. Prove the difference on cured jars before you commit a production run to it.

The load you choose is also a decision about coverage. One kilogram of oil scents 50 two-hundred-gram candles at 10% and 62 at 8% — twelve candles of difference per bottle, which on Sandalwood at ₹5,026.80 a kilogram is the part of the decision that shows up on an invoice rather than in a jar.
Straight answer
What is a 10% fragrance load, is it a maximum, and is it worth the extra oil?
A 10% fragrance load is ten grams of oil in every hundred grams of finished candle: 20 g of oil with 180 g of wax in a 200 g candle, 15 g with 135 g in a 150 g jar, 12 g with 108 g in a 120 g jar. Against the wax alone it is 111.11 g per kilogram, using oil = wax × 10 ÷ 90. Whether it is a maximum depends entirely on your wax. CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", so on that wax 10% is the ceiling and there is nothing above it; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states a range of "8% to 13% of total wax weight" with "10% Recommended", so on that wax 10% is the page's own optimum with headroom left; CSI 468 states "Up to 13%", leaving three points spare; and Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes no load at all, which is not permission. On the oil side, 10% is the commonest published stopping point — 14 pages state "Up to 10% for soy wax", 20 state "6-10%", 26 state "7-10% (start at 7%)" — but not every oil reaches it, and no page reaching 10% for soy reaches it for paraffin. Cost: 20 g runs from ₹56.64 to ₹152.92 across the oils priced below, the step up from 8% costs ₹9.30 to ₹28.55 a candle after the wax rebate, and a 1 kg bottle drops from 62 candles to 50. Worth it when a cured, blind comparison says so — not before.
One line: 10% is 20 g in a 200 g candle; on CSI 464 that is the ceiling, on Chunks it is the recommendation, and on your bench it is a hypothesis until six cured jars settle it.
Pouring at the top of the band? Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599 a kilogram recommends 10% and states up to 13%; CSI 468 at ₹650 states up to 13%; CSI 464 at ₹507.40 stops at 10%. Add Eco Candle Wicks from ₹59 for ten — a load change is a wick re-test.

20 g, 180 g and 111 g per kilo

At 10% the oil stops being a rounding error in the recipe and starts being a line in the accounts.

Load here is a share of the finished candle, so a 200 g candle at 10% holds 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. Weighed against the wax instead, the same load is 111.11 g of oil per kilogram — and this is the load where the two conventions diverge most visibly, because 10% of wax weight is only 9.09% of the finished candle. On a wax whose ceiling is stated as 10%, that difference is the difference between sitting on the limit and sitting just under it. The fourth column is the one to take to a production meeting. At 10%, one kilogram of oil is fifty 200 g candles or twenty 500 g three-wicks — the largest fragrance pack CSI lists, turned into a finite number of units. A maker pouring 250 candles a month at 10% is buying five kilograms of a single scent, which is why the bulk line exists.

The mistake: reaching 10% by adding oil to a full jar of wax. If a jar already holds 200 g of wax and you stir in 20 g of oil, the candle weighs 220 g and the load is 9.09%, not 10%. It is a small error in one jar and a systematic one across a batch: the candle is heavier than the label, the count per kilogram of wax is wrong, and the recipe cannot be reproduced by anyone who reads the card literally. Weigh the finished weight first — 180 g of wax plus 20 g of oil — and the number on the card matches the number in the jar.
At a stated ceiling, round down rather than up
Scales and pouring both introduce a little slop. If your wax page states a maximum of 10% and you aim at exactly 10%, half your jars will be marginally over it. Aim at 19.5 g on a 200 g candle — a 9.75% load — and the whole batch stays inside the stated figure with room for a rounding. It costs ₹2.51 less per candle on Sandalwood and nobody will detect the difference.

Ceiling, recommendation or mid-band: the same 10%, read three ways

This is what makes 10% different from the other loads in the series. Six and eight per cent sit comfortably inside the published ranges; thirteen is available on only two waxes. Ten sits exactly on the edge of one wax's stated capacity while being another's recommended figure — so "I pour at 10%" says nothing until you know which wax, and 10% of what.

The practical rule is the same one this series applies everywhere: take the lower of the wax figure and the oil figure, and treat it as a formulation limit rather than a target. These figures come from the maker of each material and describe what the material is built to do; they are not regulatory limits, and CSI never recommends pouring above the lower of the two. "My wax holds 10%" is not the same as "my recipe is 10%". Two makers can both say they pour 10% on Chunks and be doing different things, because that page words its range as a share of total wax weight. Ten per cent of 180 g of wax is 18 g of oil, a 9.09% finished-candle load; ten per cent of the finished candle is 20 g. The gap is 2 g in a 200 g jar — small on one candle, and 200 g of oil across a hundred, which on Vanilla Bean is ₹1,529.20. Write the basis on the card, then the argument never happens.

What 10% costs, and what the bottle loses

Two costs come with the top of the band. The obvious one is the extra four grams per 200 g candle. The one makers forget is coverage: the same 1 kg bottle now scents twelve fewer candles, so the reorder comes round sooner and the cash sits in fragrance instead of in glass. Every figure below is CSI live pricing, September 2026, at 1 kg oil rates, with wax at CSI 464's ₹0.5074 a gram.

Worked out above: oil per candle = 1 kg price ÷ 1,000 × 20 g. The net step from 8% to 10% = 4 g of oil at the per-gram price less 4 g of wax you no longer buy at ₹0.5074 — on Sandalwood, ₹20.11 of oil minus ₹2.03 of wax = ₹18.08, or ₹1,807.76 per hundred candles. Coverage: 1,000 g ÷ 20 g = 50 candles at 10% against 1,000 ÷ 16 = 62 at 8%, both rounded down. At 250 candles a month on Sandalwood, the step is ₹4,519.40 a month and ₹54,232.80 a year.

Set the last column against your selling price before the decision feels abstract. On Sandalwood at 10%, oil and CSI 464 together come to ₹191.87 a candle before glass, wick, lid, label and box — and the wax has quietly become the smaller half of that figure. That inversion is the real signature of a 10% recipe: your fragrance, not your wax, is now your main material cost, and each rupee on the oil's kilogram price now lands on 20 g of it instead of 12 g.

Diminishing returns, honestly

Twenty grams is 25% more oil than sixteen. Nobody's nose has ever been handed a percentage.

This is where most load advice overreaches. CSI publishes no burn-test results, no lab data and no measurements of throw, so nothing here will tell you that 10% is any particular percentage stronger than 8%. What can be said is structural, and it is enough to plan with.

First, perceived smell intensity does not rise in proportion to concentration. It is a general property of the sense of smell that doubling the amount of an odorant in the air produces much less than a doubling in how strong it seems — which is why a 25% increase in oil does not read as a 25% increase in anything. Second, a candle only releases what its melt pool can carry: the pool's area and temperature cap the rate at which fragrance leaves the wax, and that cap belongs to the wick, the vessel diameter and the wax, not to the load. Third, the wax has a finite capacity to hold oil in solution, which is exactly what the stated ceilings describe — and beyond it the extra oil does not sit politely in the candle, it separates, sweats or drowns the wick. Together those three give an expectation rather than a promise: the 8%-to-10% step is the smallest of the load steps perceptually and the largest in cost. It can still be the right move — base-heavy woody, gourmand and oud accords are where makers most often keep it — but it is the step that most deserves a test, because the cost is certain and the benefit is not. Score the difference, don't feel it
Use a fixed five-point scale and write the number before you smell the next jar: 1 = nothing at arm's length, 2 = detectable at arm's length, 3 = noticeable on entering the room, 4 = fills the room, 5 = more than the room needs. The same scale, the same room, the same time of day. A load whose average beats the cheaper one by less than a point has not earned ₹1,807.76 a hundred candles.

What 10% asks of your process

Raising a load changes three things besides the smell: how much oil the wax has to dissolve, how much of it the wick has to carry, and how much can go wrong while the candle cures. None of that is a reason to avoid 10%. It is a reason to watch a 10% batch more closely than an 8% one, on a schedule.

Judging smell at this point tells you nothing — that is what the fortnight is for.

The mistake: raising the load and the wick in the same batch. It is the most tempting move at 10% — more oil, so a bigger wick — and it destroys the comparison, because a better result could have come from either change. Run the load test on one wick size, accept that one arm may burn imperfectly, and fix the wick afterwards for whichever load won. Two oils worth 10% of the jar

If you are going to spend the extra four grams, spend them where a full published specification tells you the oil was built for it. Both of these state a candle load that reaches 10%, a measured flash point and their vanillin content — which is the complete set of figures a CSI oil page can give you.

Gourmand single note · the oil that discloses its vanillin
Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
The page states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax, Up to 6% for paraffin wax", a cure of "48–72 hours for soy wax", a measured "Flashpoint: 203°C" and — unusually candidly — "Vanillin Content: 2.5%". That last figure is the one to plan a 10% recipe around: more oil means more vanillin, so expect the wax to warm in tone and choose an amber, coloured or frosted vessel rather than fighting it. The stated profile is a single note, "Creamy, sweet vanilla with subtle caramel undertones". At ₹7,646 a kilogram, 20 g is ₹152.92 a candle — the row where the 8%-versus-10% test pays for itself several times over.

The CSI principle
A ceiling is a description of what the wax can hold, not a recommendation about what your candle needs.
Pouring at the top of a stated band is a legitimate choice and a documented one. Pouring there because it is the top is how makers spend ₹2,855.44 a hundred candles on a difference they never measured.
At 10%, 250 candles of 200 g needs 5 kg of oil and 45 kg of wax. Working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026, a fortnight of cure means pouring by mid-October — and CSI lists fragrance oils to 1 kg, so five bottles of one scent is a conversation. One closing piece of arithmetic. At 250 candles a month the 8%-to-10% step on Sandalwood is ₹4,519.40 a month and ₹54,232.80 a year, net of the wax you no longer buy; six jars and a fortnight cost about ₹1,541.08 of materials. There is no version of that comparison where the test is the expensive option — and if it says 10% wins, you spend the money knowing what you bought. A page about the top of the fragrance range is the easiest place in this series to oversell, since the load that uses the most oil is the one a supplier profits from most. The position taken here is the opposite: 10% is a legitimate, sometimes excellent choice, and it should be bought after a cured comparison rather than by default.

Stated ceilings, recommendations, temperatures, cure lines, flash points and vanillin figures are quoted exactly as the product pages give them, including the places where a page states nothing. Flash points appear only for the 18 oils that publish a measured value; the shared "> 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" line is a threshold for alcohol-based products and is never reported here as an oil's flash point. No lab results, GC-MS data, burn-test results, shelf-life claims or range-wide certification claims are made — the observation sheet above is a protocol for your bench.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is a 10% fragrance load?
In a 200 g candle, 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. In a 150 g jar, 15 g and 135 g; in a 120 g jar, 12 g and 108 g; in a 70 g votive, 7 g and 63 g. Per kilogram of wax it is 111.11 g of oil, using oil = wax × 10 ÷ 90. If your recipe means 10% of the wax weight rather than of the candle, that is 18 g of oil on 180 g of wax — a 198 g candle carrying a 9.09% finished-candle load.
Is 10% the maximum fragrance load for soy wax?
On some soy waxes, yes. CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", so on that wax it is the ceiling. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states "up to 13% fragrance load capacity" with "10% Recommended", and CSI 468 states "Up to 13%". Always take the lower of your wax figure and your oil figure, and never pour above it — these are formulation limits published by the maker of each material.
Does a 10% candle smell 25% stronger than an 8% one?
No. It contains 25% more oil — 20 g against 16 g — but perceived intensity does not rise in step with concentration, and what a candle actually releases is limited by its melt pool, which belongs to the wick and the vessel rather than the load. Expect a smaller difference than the arithmetic suggests, expect it to vary by scent family, and settle it with two jars poured the same afternoon and scored blind at day 14.
Which CSI fragrance oils allow a 10% candle load?
The 14 pages stating "Up to 10% for soy wax", the 20 stating "6-10% for candles" and the 26 stating "Recommended load - candles 7-10% (start at 7%)" all reach 10% — including Sandalwood and Vanilla Bean. Two groups do not: Fresh Strawberries states "6-9%", and the paraffin line on 14 pages stops at 6%. Twenty-six pages state no usage percentage at all, in which case 10% is your test rather than their guidance.
Can a 10% candle sweat or separate?
It can if the load, the stir or the temperature is wrong for that wax — which is what a stated ceiling exists to prevent. Add the oil inside the temperature band the wax page names, stir a full two minutes, and then check at 48 hours and again at day 21 for a film or beads on the surface and damp glass above the wax line. How much does moving from 8% to 10% cost per 100 candles?
Net of the 400 g of wax you no longer buy, between ₹929.84 on Citrus Lemon and ₹2,855.44 on Vanilla Bean for 200 g candles poured in CSI 464.
