What Does 8% Fragrance Load Mean in Candle Making?

Why is 8% the usual default? Because it is the load every published band agrees on. It is the bottom of the stated range on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (8% to 13%), comfortably inside CSI 464's "Up to 10%" and CSI 468's "Up to 13%", and inside every candle range CSI's oil pages state — 6-10%, 7-10%, 6-9% and 8-10% all contain it.
What does it cost? ₹45.31 to ₹142.38 of oil in a 200 g candle across the eight oils costed here, and ₹13,867.36 to ₹23,574.56 of materials per hundred candles poured in CSI 464.
Where is 8% the wrong number? On paraffin: 14 CSI oil pages state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax", which puts 8% above their stated figure. And on Chunks, 8% is the floor of the range, not its recommendation — that page says "10% Recommended".
16 g, 184 g and the recipe card
Load in this series is a share of the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 8% weighs 200 g and holds 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Some pages phrase the same idea as a share of wax weight — the Chunks page says "8% to 13% of total wax weight" — and the difference is worth knowing once: 8% of 184 g of wax is 14.72 g, which is 7.41% of the finished candle. Neither convention is wrong. Mixing them inside one batch is.

Why every published band contains 8%
The reason 8% became the industry's habit is not folklore — it is arithmetic on the published figures. CSI's waxes and oils state loads in several different phrasings, and 8% is the only one of the three common loads that falls inside all of the soy and container bands at once. Six per cent sits below the Chunks range; ten per cent sits exactly on CSI 464's stated ceiling. Eight is the only one of the three with headroom left on every wax that publishes a figure.

Two things follow. First, 8% is a defensible default rather than a compromise: on every CSI container wax that publishes a figure, an 8% candle is inside the range the wax was characterised in, which means the wax maker's guidance still applies to your batch. Second, the exceptions are specific and knowable — paraffin, and the occasional oil with a narrower band. Check the two pages, take the lower ceiling, and you are done. These are formulation figures, not regulatory limits, and nothing here recommends going above the lower of the two.
8% at production scale
Because the load is a share of the finished weight, a batch's oil requirement is simply total finished weight × 0.08. A hundred 200 g candles is 20 kg of finished candle: 1.6 kg of oil and 18.4 kg of wax. The table adds the planning allowance and the packs that cover it, and it is the sheet to work from before you message anyone about pricing.

The honest part of that table is the last column. At a hundred candles you are buying three bottles instead of one, and on some oils the combination costs a little more than the same weight bought as one kilogram: 1.6 kg of Citrus Lemon as 1 kg + 500 g + 100 g is ₹4,552 against ₹4,531.20 at the flat kilogram rate — ₹20.80 of difference. On Apple Cinnamon the listed price per kilogram is identical at 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg, so the combination costs exactly ₹7,589.76 either way. Check the per-kilogram column before assuming the big bottle is cheaper.
What 8% costs across the price range
At a fixed load, the only variable left in your material cost is which oil you chose — and CSI's range spans more than a threefold spread at 1 kg pricing. The table prices the same 16 g in eight oils, from the cheapest kilogram in the candle range to one of the dearest, then adds the wax to give a materials cost per hundred candles in CSI 464.

Read the gap between the first and last rows: at the same load, in the same jar, with the same wick, the oil choice moves your materials cost by ₹9,707.20 per hundred candles. That is far more than any load decision available to you — the 8%-to-10% step on these oils is worth a quarter of the oil line, as costed in candle fragrance oils for an 8–10% fragrance load. Fixing the load and choosing the oil carefully is the more powerful pair of decisions.
Two oils to run your 8% default on
An 8% house load wants oils whose pages actually publish a candle figure, so that your default is inside somebody's stated range rather than only inside your own habit. Both of these do, and they sit either side of the middle of the price range.

Locking 8% as a house default
A default is worth having because it turns a variable into a constant. That only works if the 8% in your third batch is the same 8% as in your first, which takes a scale, a log and one rule. Five steps, run once per scent.
When 8% is the wrong default

There is a fifth case that is not about the wax at all: a much larger vessel. A 300 g two-wick or a 500 g three-wick opens a far bigger pool than a 200 g jar, and the same 8% may read differently in it. That is a vessel question rather than a load question, and the honest answer is to re-run your comparison in the bigger jar rather than assume the percentage carries across.
