What Is the Flash Point of a Fragrance Oil?

Is the flash point the temperature where fragrance burns off? No. It is an ignitability threshold for the vapour above a liquid, not an evaporation cliff for the scent. Fragrance leaves wax gradually, and how much leaves depends on how hot the wax is and for how long — not on whether you crossed a single number.
Where do I find the flash point of a CSI oil? In the technical block on the product page where one is printed — 16 of the 92 oil pages give a number, two more give an approximate range, and 17 state a threshold of more than 93°C. For any other oil, ask for the safety data sheet on WhatsApp.
Does the flash point change how I pour? Rarely. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C, and 13 of the 16 published figures are 132°C or higher. Only three published figures sit near that band, and for those you work at the bottom of it.
What the flash point test actually measures
A fragrance oil, like any oil, is constantly losing molecules from its surface into the air. The warmer it is, the faster they leave and the denser that invisible layer of vapour becomes. The flash point is the temperature at which that layer becomes rich enough to ignite: hold a small flame near the surface and a flame flashes across it, then goes out. Cool the oil by a couple of degrees and the same flame does nothing at all, because the vapour is too thin to carry a flame.
It follows that the flash point says nothing about the liquid catching fire and burning. It describes a threshold for vapour, and the flash is momentary — the vapour that had accumulated is consumed and the flame dies for want of fuel. Think of a shallow dish of kerosene left out in Shimla in January and the same dish in Nagpur in May. Same liquid, same match, completely different result, and the difference is entirely in how much vapour is standing above the surface.
The figure is produced in a controlled test, not estimated. A measured sample goes into a cup, the cup is heated at a set rate, and a small flame is presented at intervals until the vapour flashes. Two standard arrangements exist — a closed cup, where a lid lets vapour build up over the sample, and an open cup, where it does not. The same liquid reads lower in a closed cup than in an open one, so a flash point is only strictly comparable with another one measured the same way. Product pages print the figure; the test method is recorded on the safety data sheet, which CSI sends on request through WhatsApp.
Three other temperatures get tangled up with it, and keeping them apart is most of the battle. The fire point is warmer: the temperature at which the vapour keeps burning after the ignition source is taken away rather than flashing once. The autoignition temperature is warmer still and different in kind: no flame, no spark, the material ignites on its own. And the add window — the temperature at which your wax page tells you to stir fragrance in — is a process instruction with no direct relationship to any of them.

Why the number is printed on a product page at all
The figure originates with the fragrance house that made the blend and is carried on the safety data sheet — the document that travels with a chemical product and records what it is, how to handle it, how to store it, what to do if it spills and how it must be declared for carriage. Flash point sits in the physical-properties part of that sheet. Everything downstream of the sheet copies it: the supplier's product page, the wholesaler's spec sheet, the packing list.
It matters most in transport, because flash point is the criterion by which liquids are sorted into flammable and non-flammable for carriage. The dividing line used internationally is 60°C. Every numeric figure on CSI's oil pages is at least 85°C — a full 25°C above that line at the very lowest, and more than 140°C above it at the top. That is why a 1 kg bottle of fragrance oil moves by ordinary road courier in India rather than as a declared flammable consignment. What any particular courier or airline will accept is between you and that carrier, and some ask for the sheet before they will take a consignment: get it from CSI on WhatsApp and send it with the booking.
The second place it matters is a buyer's onboarding form. A hotel group, a corporate gifting agency, a hamper company or a marketplace category team will ask a candle brand for documentation before a purchase order: what is in the candle, is the fragrance IFRA certified on the supplier's statement, what is the flash point, is there a safety data sheet on file. None of that is about whether your candle smells nice. It is about whether the buyer's compliance desk can tick a box. Brands that keep a folder — one sheet per oil, dated — close those orders in days rather than weeks.
The third is your own store room, especially if you are scaling. A maker holding 200 g bottles in a cupboard is in a very different position from one holding 5 kg and 10 kg quantities on a rack in a Bhiwandi or Peenya unit. Warehouse operators, landlords and insurers ask what is stored and at what flash point, because their fire-load assessment depends on it. The honest position at small scale is that this is paperwork, not risk management — but it is paperwork you will be asked for the first time you take a serious wholesale order.
What CSI's 92 fragrance oil pages actually publish
There is no point discussing flash point in the abstract when the real question is what you can look up before you buy. Of the 92 fragrance oil pages live on the CSI store in September 2026, 16 print a single numeric flash point. Two more — the Roasted Coffee and Dark Vanilla pages — give it as an approximate range of 191–193°C. Seventeen pages in the fine-fragrance-grade line state a threshold rather than a measurement: flash point greater than 93°C. The remaining 57 pages do not publish a figure, and for those the honest answer is that it is not published — ask for the sheet.

Read that margin column before you read anything else. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to add fragrance at 80–90°C; thirteen of the sixteen published figures sit 42°C or more above the top of that window, and the highest sits 116°C above it. Three do not: Neroli at 85°C, Palo Santo at 93°C and Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C. Those three are the reason to read the figure at all before a pour, and the Gardenia Tuberose Fragrance Oil page says so itself — it flags the lower flash point and tells you to add the oil to wax below that temperature.
Notice also what the table does not correlate with. The cheapest oil in it by the gram is Citronella at ₹2.89/g with a 132°C figure; the dearest is Vanilla Bean at ₹7.65/g with 203°C; British Rose at ₹3.07/g publishes 192°C while Neroli at ₹6.66/g publishes 85°C. Price does not track flash point in either direction, and neither does the stated candle load — fifteen of the sixteen pages state up to 10% for soy regardless of whether the figure is 85°C or 206°C.
Why one oil reads 85°C and another reads 206°C
A fragrance oil is not one substance. It is a blend of tens of aroma materials, often with a carrier, and each of those materials has its own volatility. The vapour standing above the blend is dominated by whichever materials evaporate most readily — so a small proportion of a very volatile material governs the flash point of the whole bottle, in the same way that one loose window governs how cold a room gets. The figure therefore tracks the lightest fraction in the blend, not the average, and certainly not the impression the fragrance leaves on your nose.
This is why you cannot guess a flash point from a scent family, and CSI's own published numbers prove it more clearly than any argument could. Two white florals, 87°C apart. Two vanillin-carrying gourmands, 71°C apart. Two fresh herbal oils, 67°C apart. If family predicted the figure, those pairs would sit together.

There is one more practical consequence. A flash point belongs to a formula, and formulas are revised — a material is reformulated, a carrier changes, a house switches a supplier. The figure you have in a PDF from two years ago describes the blend as it was then. When a corporate buyer asks for a current sheet, get a current sheet rather than forwarding the old one, and note on your own record which purchase the document came with.
How to read a flash point as a candle maker
The figure earns its place in exactly one part of your routine: the moment you add a new oil to your range. After that it lives on a sheet and does not change unless the oil does. Here is the whole job.
Four questions a flash point cannot answer
It does not tell you how strongly the oil will throw
Scent strength in a finished candle comes from load, from the melt pool the wick produces, from how readily the wax gives fragrance up, from cure, and from the oil's own composition. None of those is measured by a flash test. CSI's own published figures make the point without needing an argument: the pages describing the strongest throw and the pages describing a moderate throw are scattered right across the 85°C to 206°C range with no order to them at all. If you want strength, run a hot-throw test and work the load properly.
It does not tell you what load to pour
Load comes from two published ceilings, and the lower one governs. The wax page states its maximum — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% of total wax weight with 8% as a starting point, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10% — and the oil page states its own candle range. Pour Cinnamon Vanilla, whose page allows up to 13%, into CSI 464, whose page allows up to 10%, and 10% is your ceiling. The flash point is not part of that arithmetic in any way.
It does not tell you how long to cure
Several CSI oil pages give cure guidance of their own — 48–72 hours for soy on the Neroli, Jasmine, British Rose and Vetiver pages, for instance. Treat that as the earliest point at which a candle can be test-burned rather than the end of the story: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page itself asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles before a scent is judged. The Vetiver page makes the point in its own words, noting that the scent builds slowly and asking for a full cure before throw is assessed.
It does not tell you anything about skin safety
A high flash point does not make an oil suitable for a massage candle, a balm or a body product, and a low one does not make it unsuitable. Skin use is governed by the IFRA position for the product category and by the documentation the supplier can provide; 46 of CSI's 92 oil pages state IFRA certification, which is a page claim to verify with the certificate, not a licence to put an oil on skin. Ask for the documents on WhatsApp before you formulate anything that touches a customer.
What flash point means in an Indian workshop
Take the worst store room you are likely to have: a first-floor room in Ahmedabad or Nagpur in May, under a concrete roof, unventilated, 42°C by mid-afternoon and warmer near the ceiling. That is 43°C below the lowest published figure on CSI's list and 164°C below the highest. Flash point is not what threatens oils on an Indian shelf — heat-driven degradation, sunlight, repeated opening and a half-empty bottle full of air are, and those are worth managing for scent quality reasons that have nothing to do with ignition.
The bench is different. A melter holding wax at 85°C, a steel pitcher just off the heat, a heat gun used to smooth tops: those are temperatures in the same territory as the three lowest published figures, and they are the reason to know which oils those are before you open a bottle next to them. That is a handling question rather than a specification question, and it is worth setting up your bench so the question never becomes urgent — thermometer in the wax, oil added off the heat source, no open flame anywhere near an open bottle.
The paperwork question is the one that will actually cost you money if you ignore it. Indian D2C candle brands on Instagram and Shopify increasingly sell into corporate gifting, and corporate gifting comes with vendor onboarding: GST details, product composition, IFRA statement, safety data sheets. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and corporate orders for it are being placed now. A brand that can attach a folder of sheets to a quotation on the same day looks like a supplier; a brand that has to go and ask looks like a hobby. Ask CSI for the documentation when you buy the oil, and file it.
One honest caution about scale. A 400 g oil purchase for 500 candles at 8% in 200 g candles is not a fire-safety project — it is a bottle in a cupboard, and ₹1,227.20 of British Rose at 1 kg pricing. But the day you move to a rented unit with 5 kg and 10 kg stock on a rack, the store room becomes somebody else's fire-load calculation as well as yours, and the sheets are the first thing they will ask to see.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and has an obvious commercial interest in fragrance oils looking well documented. So this page says the unhelpful part plainly: a flash point is not a quality score, it will not help you choose between two oils, and 57 of the 92 oil pages on the CSI store do not publish one at all. If a supplier offers you a flash point as evidence that an oil is good, they are answering a question you did not ask.
Every figure quoted here is from a live CSI product page or from live stock in September 2026, and the linked product pages are always authoritative. The 16 numeric flash points, the two approximate 191–193°C ranges, the 17 pages stating more than 93°C and the 57 with no figure are counts of what the pages publish today.
