Commercial Fragrance · Melt Throw Testing
You will find plenty of lists claiming to know the strongest melt oils. We have not measured throw for any of ours, and a list without measurements is an opinion. What we can give you is better than a list: a test you can run in a week, in your own wax and warmers, that produces a ranking you can actually trust.
₹1,191.88
a six-oil warmer test matrix — six 15 g testers (₹592.88) plus 1 kg Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — sixty illustrative 10 g melts at 10% · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oils give the strongest throw in wax melts? We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so any ranking from us would be invented. Run a matrix instead: several oils, one wax, one load, the same warmers, blind scorers, scores at fixed times. The oil that wins in your matrix is your strongest.

How do you test hot throw in wax melts? Warm one melt at a time in the same warmer and room, score from a fixed distance at 15 minutes, 1, 2 and 4 hours, air the room between oils, and repeat on another day. Use at least two blind scorers. The scoring sheet sets it out.

What load should I use when comparing oils? The same load for every oil, inside the wax's ceiling — 10% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is a sensible middle (ceiling 13%). On CSI 464, 10% is the ceiling. Compare oils first; tune each winner's load afterwards.

How much does a throw test cost? Six oils in 15 g (₹592.88) plus 1 kg of Chunks (₹599.00) is ₹1,191.88 for sixty 10 g melts — ten per oil.
The short answer
Honest answer: No throw measurements are published for CSI's oils. Rank oils yourself with a controlled warmer matrix.
Matrix: 6 oils × 10 melts at 10% on Chunks · 2 warmer types · 6 time points (cold, 15 min, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, next-day re-melt) · 2–3 blind scorers · 2 sessions.
Cost: Six 15 g testers ₹592.88 + Chunks 1 kg ₹599.00 = ₹1,191.88. Oil used: 60 g; wax: 540 g.
The warmer test matrix — six oils, six time points, three blind noses Every cell is a 0–5 score. Nothing here is a CSI measurement: the grid is what you fill in. Cold (pack) 15 min 1 hour 2 hours 4 hours Next day A · Coffee Σ B · Soft floral Σ C · Oud / woody Σ D · Hot spice Σ E · Vanilla oud Σ F · Citrus control Σ sells the pack hot strength — earns the reorder staying power · re-melt
The grid is empty on purpose: it is the sheet you fill in, not a result. The six entrants are examples chosen for family spread and position in CSI's best-selling sort, not for any measured throw. Swap in the oils you are actually considering.
Straight answer
Which fragrance oils give the strongest throw in wax melts?
Honestly: nobody can tell you for your melts without testing, and we have not published throw measurements for any CSI oil. Throw in a warmer depends on the wax, the load, the cure, the warmer's heat, the amount of wax in the dish and the room — as much as on the oil. So instead of a ranking, use a test matrix. Pour several oils at one load inside the wax's ceiling — 10% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (stated ceiling 13%) — ten illustrative 10 g melts each. Cure them identically. Then warm one melt at a time in the same warmers and room, and have two or three people score blind at fixed times: cold in the pack, 15 minutes, 1, 2 and 4 hours, and a next-day re-melt. Repeat on a second day. Six 15 g testers — for example Roasted Coffee, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Woody Oud, Spicy Cinnamon, Dark Vanilla Oud and a Citrus Lemon control — plus 1 kg of Chunks cost ₹1,191.88. The oil with the highest hot and staying-power totals is your strongest.
One line: a ranking you run in your own warmer beats any list — including ours — because it is the only one measured in your conditions.
Six entrants, one wax: Roasted Coffee ₹93.22, Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹104.00, Woody Oud ₹93.22, Spicy Cinnamon ₹116.00, Dark Vanilla Oud ₹105.02 and Citrus Lemon ₹81.42 — ₹592.88 for 90 g. With Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 kg (₹599.00), that is ₹1,191.88 for the whole matrix.

Why no one can rank melt throw for you

A throw ranking without a stated wax, load, cure, warmer and room is not a measurement. It is a mood.

"Throw" is how far and how strongly a scent carries into a room. In a melt, cold throw is what you smell from the pack and hot throw is what fills the room once the wax is liquid in a warmer. Both depend on things that change from maker to maker: which wax, what load, how long the melts cured, how hot the warmer runs, how much wax sits in the dish, how big and airy the room is. Change any of them and the order of oils can change too.

That is why we do not publish a ranking, and why you should be cautious of anyone who does without stating their conditions. It is also why a matrix works: it holds every one of those variables still except the oil, and it measures in the conditions your customers will actually use. The ranking it produces is narrow — your wax, your load, your warmers — but it is real.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A "top ten strongest melt oils" list would sell well for us. We have no measurements to build it on, so it would be marketing dressed as data. Worse, it would send you to buy kilos of oils that may not win in your wax. A ₹1,191.88 matrix is cheaper than one wrong kilo.
Use the warmers your customers use
CSI does not sell wax warmers, and nothing on this page prices one. Test in the warmer types your customers are most likely to own — if you sell at a market where tealight warmers are common, include one; if your buyers use electric warmers, include that. Two warmer types are better than one.

Designing the matrix

A matrix has three rules: one thing changes (the oil), everything else is fixed, and the scorer does not know which oil is which. The design below meets all three with ten melts per oil, which is enough for two warmer types, two sessions, cold scoring and spares.

Test design · illustrative 10 g melts · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks
What stays fixed and what changes
Element Setting Why
Oil Six entrants, coded A–F The only variable
Wax Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for all Stated ceiling 13% leaves room; CSI does not list a wax sold specifically for melts
Load 10% for every oil (1.0 g in a 10 g melt) A middle load inside the ceiling; tune winners later
Melts per oil 10 2 warmers × 2 sessions + cold scoring + spares
Mould One mould for every oil Same melt size and shape
Cure Same number of days for all Soy commonly keeps settling for days; judge all at the same age
Warmers Two types, same units throughout Customers' warmers vary; your matrix should too
Room Same room, doors and fans fixed, aired between tests Room size and airflow change what you smell
Scorers 2–3 people, blind to the codes Expectation is the loudest scent in any test
Sessions Two days, same times One session is noise; two that agree are a result

Ten melts per oil at 10% uses 10 g of oil and 90 g of wax, so a single 15 g tester covers each entrant with 5 g to spare. Six entrants use 60 g of oil and 540 g of wax — a 1 kg bag of Chunks covers the lot. If your mould's cavities are not 10 g, weigh one filled cavity (CSI does not publish cavity weights) and scale the grams; the design does not change.

1
Pour and codePour each oil into ten melts at 10%. Label the trays with the oil name, then have someone else re-label the finished melts with letters A–F and keep the key sealed.
2
Cure identicallyStore all six sets together, in the same place, for the same number of days. In general practice, a week gives soy a fair chance.
3
Score cold firstBefore any warming, each scorer opens every pack and scores cold strength 0–5. This is what sells the pack at a stall.
4
Warm one oil at a timeOne melt, one warmer, one room. Start the timer when the warmer goes on. Scorers step in from the doorway at 15 minutes, 1, 2 and 4 hours, score, and step out.
5
Air the room completelyOpen windows, wait, and check the room smells neutral before the next oil. Never run two oils in the same room on the same session.
6
Re-melt next day and repeatWarm the same melt again the next day and score at 1 hour — that is staying power. Then run the whole matrix again on a second day in the second warmer type.

Six entrants, and why

The entrants are a spread, not a shortlist of favourites. A good matrix includes one oil you expect to lose.

The six below are examples, chosen so that no two share a family and every one is in stock at 15 g on the pull date. Several sit near the top of CSI's best-selling sort — which tells you they are popular, not that they throw strongly. Citrus Lemon is included as a control: citrus is often assumed to be lighter in a warmer, and a matrix is the place to test that assumption rather than repeat it. Swap in whatever oils you are really choosing between.

The scoring sheet

Each scorer gets one sheet per session. Scores are 0 to 5, from the doorway, with a short word or two for character. Keep the scale anchored so everyone means the same thing by a 3:

Score anchors · agree them before the first test
What each score means
Score Meaning at the doorway
0 Nothing noticeable
1 Only noticeable standing next to the warmer
2 Faint from the doorway, have to look for it
3 Clearly noticeable from the doorway
4 Fills the room, obvious on entering
5 Strong throughout the room, possibly too strong
One sheet per scorer per session · codes only, never oil names
Scoring sheet (copy this)
Code Cold (pack) 15 min 1 hour 2 hours 4 hours Next-day re-melt (1 h) Notes (character, any off-notes, sweating)
A
B
C
D
E
F

Two notes on the sheet. A 5 is not automatically good: a melt that is overpowering in a small room may be returned, so ask scorers to flag "too strong" in the notes. And record anything odd — a melt that looks wet or greasy, a warmer that did not fully melt the wax, a change in character over time. Those notes often explain a surprising score better than the number does.

Totalling and deciding

When both sessions are done, open the key and total each oil. Keep cold, hot and staying power separate — they answer different questions for your business:

1
Cold totalSum the cold scores. This predicts how the melt sells in the pack at a stall or in a gift box.
2
Hot totalSum the 15 min, 1 h and 2 h scores across scorers, sessions and warmer types. This predicts whether customers reorder.
3
Staying-power totalSum the 4 h and next-day scores. This predicts whether customers feel the pack was good value.
4
Check agreementIf the two sessions or two warmer types rank oils very differently, conditions were not controlled — fix them and rerun the disagreeing oils.
5
Break ties on costIf two oils tie, the cheaper per melt wins. The table below gives each entrant's per-melt cost at 100 g and 1 kg.
6
Tune the winners' loadsThe matrix compared oils at 10%. Now take the top two into a load ladder — Best Fragrance Load for Strong Wax Melts — to find whether they gain anything up to the 13% ceiling on Chunks.
10 g melt · 10% on Chunks · oil and wax only
Tie-breaker: cost per melt for each entrant
Oil At 100 g rate At 1 kg rate
Roasted Coffee ₹9.29 ₹9.13
Japanese Cherry Blossom ₹10.39 ₹10.23
Woody Oud ₹9.92 ₹9.92
Spicy Cinnamon ₹12.38 ₹11.89
Dark Vanilla Oud ₹11.29 ₹11.08
Citrus Lemon ₹8.39 ₹8.22
The matrix mistake that ruins a week. Running two oils in the same room on the same afternoon, or scoring an oil straight after a strong spice without airing the room. Noses adapt within minutes, and the second oil is judged against a room that already smells. If you only have one room, one oil per session is the price of a result you can trust.
Run the matrix before the festive rush. A matrix takes a week with curing, and Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. Once your winners are clear, send us the oils and kilos on WhatsApp for a combined quote on oil, Chunks and melt containers, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation.

The CSI principle
Measure throw where it happens — in a warmer, in a room, blind.
Any claim about the strongest melt oil is only as good as the conditions behind it. Fix the wax, the load, the cure, the warmer and the room; hide the names; score at set times; repeat. The ranking that comes out is the only one worth building a range on.

If you want candidate oils to put into the matrix, Strong Fragrance Oils for Wax Melts explains which families makers commonly choose for strength. If you are building a whole range rather than finding one strong oil, Best Fragrance Oils for Wax Melts in India is the better starting point, and How Much Fragrance Oil Should I Use in Wax Melts? has the grams at every load.

The strongest oil is not on anyone's list. It is in the column with the highest total on your own sheet.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished melts. A question like "which oils throw strongest" is where a supplier is tempted to invent a leaderboard. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so this page does not rank them. It gives you the method to rank them yourself.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026; the coffee bean mould price is from the 24–25 September 2026 pull. Every entrant is in stock at 15 g on that date. Matrix costs and per-melt figures are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals. Positions in the best-selling sort describe the Fragrance Oils collection's order on the pull date — popularity, not throw.

The matrix design, score anchors, cure period and airing practice are general testing practice, not CSI measurements. The 10 g melt is illustrative; CSI does not publish cavity weights, and warmers are not part of CSI's price list. The 13% (Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) ceilings are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. For help choosing entrants, IFRA certificates or MSDS, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oil has the strongest hot throw in wax melts?
No published measurements rank CSI's oils by hot throw. Families commonly chosen for projection include spice, mint and coffee, but the only trustworthy answer is a blind warmer test in your own wax and load. The matrix on this page takes about a week including cure.
How do I test wax melt scent throw at home?
Pour each oil at the same load into the same mould, cure identically, then warm one melt at a time in the same warmer and room. Score from the doorway at 15 minutes, 1, 2 and 4 hours, air the room between oils, and repeat on another day with blind codes.
Why do some wax melts smell strong in the pack but weak in the warmer?
Cold throw and hot throw are different. In general practice, a melt can smell strong cold and still release little when warm — for example if it has not cured, the warmer does not fully melt it, or the oil simply projects less when heated. Score cold and hot separately.
How long should wax melts cure before testing throw?
No cure time is published in CSI's data. In general practice soy is given several days to a week before a fair judgement. Whatever you choose, cure every oil in the test for the same number of days.
Does the wax warmer affect throw?
Yes, in general practice warmers vary in how hot they run, which changes how fully and quickly the wax melts. Test in the warmer types your customers use — CSI does not sell warmers — and include two types if you can.
What load should I use to compare fragrance oils in wax melts?
One load for all, inside the wax's ceiling — 10% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (ceiling 13%) is a sensible middle. On CSI 464, 10% is the ceiling. Then ladder the winners' loads separately.
Rank them yourself
