A wax melt is the simplest scented product you can make: wax, fragrance, a little colour and a mould. No wick, no jar, no burn test for tunnelling. That simplicity is exactly why the fragrance choice matters more here than anywhere else — the oil is the product. This guide shortlists oils worth testing, sets out which CSI wax has a published load ceiling, and costs one melt to the paisa.

Quick answers — read this first
What are the best fragrance oils for wax melts? There is no measured throw ranking, and we will not invent one. Start with one oil per scent family: Lavender, British Rose, Dark Vanilla, Cinnamon Vanilla, Roasted Coffee, Fresh Strawberries, Mango Coconut and Eucalyptus Spearmint cover most of what melt buyers ask for. Test them in your own wax and warmer. The shortlist is in oils by family.

Which wax should I use for wax melts? CSI does not list a wax sold specifically as melt wax. The only published fragrance ceilings are Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% — both container waxes. For soy pearl, soy pillar, paraffin, beeswax or soy butter, confirm the maximum before you go above a cautious test load.

How much fragrance oil goes in a wax melt? Load is a percentage of the finished weight. An illustrative 10 g melt at 10% holds 1.0 g of oil and 9.0 g of wax. On Chunks you can test from 6% up to the 13% ceiling, never above. The full gram-by-gram guide covers every load and melt size.

What does one wax melt cost to make? In oil and wax, ₹8.81 to ₹13.29 for a 10 g melt at 10% on Chunks, with oil at 100 g rates. Lavender works out at ₹10.79. Wax is about half of that at a 10% load — ₹5.39 of Chunks in every melt, whichever oil you choose.
The short answer
Oils to test first: One per family — floral (Lavender, British Rose), gourmand (Dark Vanilla, Cinnamon Vanilla, Roasted Coffee), fruity (Fresh Strawberries, Mango Coconut), fresh (Eucalyptus Spearmint), woody (Sandalwood). No throw measurements are published; test in your warmer.
Wax: No melt-specific wax is listed. Published ceilings: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%. Any other wax: confirm its maximum on the product page or on WhatsApp.
Per melt: 10 g at 10% on Chunks = 1.0 g oil + 9.0 g wax = ₹8.81–₹13.29 in materials. A six-melt pack of Lavender = ₹64.75 before packaging.

The 10 g melt and the 10% load are illustrative working figures, not a specification: CSI does not publish cavity weights for its moulds or fill weights for its melt containers, so weigh one filled cavity of your own mould. The warmer is on the customer's side of the counter and is not part of CSI's price list.
Straight answer
What are the best fragrance oils for wax melts in India, and how do I choose?
The honest answer is that nobody can hand you a ranked list without testing in your wax and your customer's warmer — and we have not published throw measurements for any oil. What we can do is narrow the field. A melt range sells on recognisable scent families, so start with one oil per family: Lavender or British Rose for floral, Dark Vanilla or Cinnamon Vanilla for gourmand, Roasted Coffee for coffee, Fresh Strawberries or Mango Coconut for fruit, Eucalyptus Spearmint for fresh and Sandalwood for woody. For wax, CSI does not list a wax sold specifically as melt wax; the only published ceilings are Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 13% and CSI 464 at 10%, both container waxes, so Chunks gives you the most headroom. A 10 g melt at 10% holds 1.0 g of oil and costs ₹8.81 to ₹13.29 in oil and wax. Melts need no wick. Test each oil in 15 g, keep the ones your testers remember, and build the range from there.
One line: pick one oil per scent family, pour it at a load inside the wax's published ceiling, and let a warmer test — not a price tag — decide.
The cheapest honest start is three 15 g testers from three families: Lavender ₹105.02, Dark Vanilla ₹130.00 and Mango Coconut ₹93.22 — ₹328.24 for 45 g. At 10%, each 15 g makes fifteen illustrative 10 g melts, so 45 test melts in all, with a 500 g bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹299.00 covering the wax.

What a wax melt is made of

A candle has to burn well. A melt only has to smell good and come out of the mould clean. That makes it a fragrance product first and a wax product second.

A wax melt is scented wax poured into a small mould or a snap-apart container, left to set, and warmed by the customer in a wax warmer. There is no wick. There is no jar to price, no melt pool to chase to the glass, no mushrooming or tunnelling to fix. What remains is four materials: wax, fragrance oil, colour and a mould or container. CSI lists all four, and this cluster prices every one of them. The one thing CSI does not list is a warmer, and nothing on this page prices one.

Look at the last column before anything else. Three numbers that every melt maker wants are not in CSI's published data: how many grams a mould cavity holds, how many grams a melt container holds, and how much dye colours a kilo of wax. We will not guess them. Everywhere in this cluster we use an illustrative 10 g melt, clearly labelled, and tell you to weigh one filled cavity of your own mould. A kitchen-scale reading takes thirty seconds and replaces every assumption on this page with your real figure.

The fourth input, fragrance, is where the choice gets hard. There are 93 oils in the Fragrance Oils collection. Most melt buyers will never smell more than a handful of them. Your job is to find the handful that people remember after the warmer is switched off, and to do it without buying a kilo of anything first. The rest of this guide is built around that job. If you are still weighing melts against candles as a product, I Want to Make Soy Candles, Wax Melts and Mould Candles — Can I Use the Same Fragrance Oils for All Three? covers using one set of oils across candles, melts and mould candles.

The melt is the fragrance
In a 200 g container candle, the jar and wick are a large part of what the customer pays for. In a melt, the customer is buying almost nothing but scent. A pleasant oil in a candle can hide behind a beautiful jar. In a melt it cannot hide behind anything. Spend your testing time on the oil, not on the mould shape.

Which wax — and what is actually published

Most melt guides tell you to buy "melt wax". CSI does not list a wax sold specifically for melts, and we would rather say so than relabel a container wax. What CSI does publish is a fragrance-load ceiling for two waxes, both sold for container candles: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 13%, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, up to 10%. Those are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. For every other wax in the catalogue, no ceiling is published in our data, so a maximum for melts has to be confirmed before you rely on it.

For a first melt range, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is the safe default on the published data alone: it carries the highest stated ceiling, so the whole 6–13% test range sits inside the maker's figure. CSI 464 is ₹91.60 a kilo cheaper, but its 10% ceiling closes off the top of the ladder. The others may suit melts well — a firmer pillar wax, for example, is commonly chosen in general practice for crisp mould release — but without a published maximum you cannot plan a high load on them. Ask for the figure first.

The container-wax caveat, stated plainly. Chunks and CSI 464 are sold for container candles, where a soft, creamy set is a virtue. In a melt mould, a soft wax can be harder to release and may feel tacky in a clamshell on a warm day. That is general candle-making experience, not a CSI measurement. Pour a small test in your own mould, let it set fully, pop it out and handle it. If it smears or sticks, ask CSI on WhatsApp about a firmer option and its stated load maximum before you switch.

Oils worth testing, family by family

A melt range is a menu. Customers choose by family first — "something sweet", "something fresh" — and by name second.

The table below takes twelve in-stock oils, one or two per scent family, and costs each one inside an illustrative 10 g melt at 10% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. The reasons in the last column are the honest ones: position in CSI's best-selling sort, price tier, whether a real 1 kg saving exists, and how naturally the scent pairs with a mould shape. None of them is a measured throw result, because we have not published any. Strong fragrance oils for wax melts explains which families are commonly chosen for strength and how to test that claim yourself.

Fruity Fresh Strawberries 100 g ₹377.60 ₹3.78/g ₹3.78 ₹9.17 Bright fruit for summer and children's-room melts
Tropical Mango Coconut 100 g ₹500.00 ₹5.00/g ₹5.00 ₹10.39 Real 1 kg saving of 20.7% if it becomes a seller
Fresh / clean Eucalyptus Spearmint 100 g ₹354.00 ₹3.54/g ₹3.54 ₹8.93 Cheapest 15 g in the collection; bathroom and kitchen melts
Woody Sandalwood 100 g ₹502.68 ₹5.03/g ₹5.03 ₹10.42 A calm woody base for men's gift sets
Oud Woody Oud 100 g ₹453.12 ₹4.53/g ₹4.53 ₹9.92 Indian-market oud profile at a mid price

Two things stand out. The spread is narrow: every melt on the list costs between ₹8.81 and ₹13.29 in materials, because ₹5.39 of that is wax and wax costs the same whichever oil you pick. And the dearer oils do not dominate a melt's cost the way they dominate a candle's. Dark Vanilla adds ₹4.36 of oil per melt over Eucalyptus Spearmint. Across a six-melt pack that is ₹26.16 — real money, but not enough to rule a premium oil out of a melt range the way it might rule it out of an entry candle.

Chocolate Fudge shows why the stock line matters: its 100 g is out of stock on the pull date, so it is costed at the 50 g. If a dessert range depends on it, check the product page before you print labels. The same caution applies to the seven oils with no stock at all, including Mogra and Spiced Rum — a price you cannot buy is not a price.

How the families usually map to moulds

Mould shape is part of how a melt sells, and certain pairings make a range easier to understand at a glance. The 55 Cavity Coffee Bean Mould (₹177.00) and Roasted Coffee tell the buyer the scent before they smell it. The 9 Bar Chocolate Mould (₹177.00) does the same for Chocolate Fudge. The 15 Cavity Rose Mould (₹153.40) suits British Rose, the Mini Heart Mould (₹153.40) suits gifting florals, and the Cloud Mould, 30 cavity (₹529.82) suits fresh and clean scents. None of this changes throw; it changes how quickly a customer picks the right one.

What one melt costs

The working unit for this cluster is an illustrative 10 g melt at a 10% load: 1.0 g of oil and 9.0 g of wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo makes the wax ₹5.39. The oil depends on which oil and which pack size. Here are three picks, each at three pack sizes, so you can see how much the bottle size moves the melt cost:

10 g melt · 10% · 9.0 g Chunks = ₹5.39
One melt, three oils, three pack sizes
Oil From 15 g From 100 g From 1 kg Six-melt pack (100 g rate)
Lavender ₹12.39 ₹10.79 ₹10.61 ₹64.75
Dark Vanilla ₹14.06 ₹13.29 ₹13.04 ₹79.75
Mango Coconut ₹11.61 ₹10.39 ₹9.36 ₹62.35

The 15 g tester is the dearest way to make melts, and the step down to 100 g is where the per-melt cost drops. Above 100 g it barely moves for most oils: Lavender goes from ₹10.79 to ₹10.61. Mango Coconut is one of the exceptions — its 1 kg is 20.7% cheaper per gram than its 100 g, so a proven Mango Coconut melt gets cheaper at scale. Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oil for Commercial Wax Melt Making works through when the kilo pays for itself.

Packaging is where melt costs actually jump. A Wax Melts Container costs ₹29.50 each at every pack size (5 for ₹147.50, 10 for ₹295.00, 50 for ₹1,475.00, 100 for ₹2,950.00). If your container holds six 10 g melts, it adds 45.6% on top of the ₹64.75 of Lavender oil and wax inside it — and for a value oil like Eucalyptus Spearmint, 55.1%. CSI does not publish that container's fill weight, so weigh a filled one before you set a pack size. Labour, labels, freight and GST are all extra, and all yours to add.

Illustrative 60 g pack (six 10 g melts) · 10% on Chunks · oil at 100 g rate · container ₹29.50

The CSI principle
Spend on the oil. Save on nothing else until the oil is right.
The difference between the cheapest and dearest oil on this page is ₹4.48 a melt. The difference between a melt someone reorders and one they forget is the whole business. Test widely in 15 g, keep what people remember, and only then look for savings in wax, moulds and packaging.

How to choose your first range

A first melt range does not need twenty scents. It needs four to six that cover different moods and one or two that you can make in volume without the stock running dry. The sequence below gets you there with the least money in unproven oil.

1
Weigh your mould before you buy oilFill one cavity of your chosen mould with water or melted wax and weigh it. That number replaces our illustrative 10 g everywhere. A mould whose cavities hold 5 g needs half the oil per melt; one that holds 20 g needs double.
2
Pick one oil per familyFloral, gourmand, fruity, fresh, woody. Buy each in 15 g where it exists, or the smallest listed size where it does not. At 10%, 15 g makes fifteen 10 g melts — enough for a real test and a few giveaways.
3
Pour everything at one load firstUse 10% on Chunks for every oil in round one so the oils are compared, not the loads. Best Fragrance Load for Strong Wax Melts covers moving the load once you have a favourite.
4
Cure, then test in one warmer, in one roomLet the melts set and rest before judging them — in general practice a few days to a week. Warm each in the same warmer, in the same room, and note what you smell at 15 minutes and an hour. Which Fragrance Oils Give the Strongest Throw in Wax Melts? has a full scoring sheet.
5
Keep the ones people rememberAsk three or four people to sniff blind and tell you which they would buy. Drop anything nobody names. Move keepers to 100 g, where the tester premium disappears.
6
Price the pack before you scaleAdd container, label and your time to the material cost above. If a premium oil still fits your selling price, keep it; if not, keep it for a premium line. Ask for GST invoicing and IFRA documentation on WhatsApp when you place the production order.

Here are three oils that show three different roles in a first range: a familiar floral from the top of the best-selling sort, a premium gourmand, and a value tropical with a real kilo saving.

The oil a first-time melt buyer is most likely to ask for by name, and first in CSI's best-selling sort on the pull date. Pricing is flat above 50 g, so 100 g is the sensible production size. One 10 g melt at 10% costs ₹10.79 in oil and wax.

Where melt ranges go wrong

Most weak melts are not weak oils. They are good oils in the wrong load, the wrong wax, or judged too early.

The most common mistake is pushing the load to fix a melt that simply has not cured. Oil binds into soy wax over days, not hours, and a melt sniffed the afternoon it was poured tells you little. The second is going above the wax's stated ceiling in the belief that more oil means more scent. It does not reliably, and past the ceiling the wax may not hold the oil at all — in general practice that shows as oily spots or a greasy film on the melt surface. On Chunks the ceiling is 13%. Never go above it.

The third is comparing oils in different warmers. A bulb warmer and a tealight warmer heat wax very differently, and a melt that seems faint in one may fill the room in the other. When you test, test like with like. The fourth is building a range around an oil that is not reliably in stock. Check that every oil in your core range has an in-stock 100 g or 1 kg before you commit a label to it.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more oil if we told you that premium oils make better melts. We have no measurements that say so, and in a melt the price gap is small anyway: ₹4.48 a melt between the cheapest and dearest oil on this page. A ₹3.42-a-gram British Rose may be exactly what your customers want. Buy the cheaper oil first if it passes the sniff test, and spend the difference on testing more families rather than on one expensive bottle.

One more honest note on colour. Dye is cheap per melt, but CSI does not publish a dose per kilo, and the right amount depends on the shade you want and the wax. Start light, follow the dye's product page, and record exactly what you used so the second batch matches the first. Mica is listed (white and green, from ₹57.82 for 10 g) if you want shimmer rather than colour; test it in your mould first.

A melt has nowhere to hide. Whatever you pour is the whole product.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished melts. The easy line for us would be to name a "best" oil and sell you a kilo of it. We have no throw measurements to justify a ranking, so this page shortlists oils by family and tells you how to test them — and says plainly that CSI does not list a wax sold specifically for melts.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; moulds, dyes and containers from the pull of 24–25 September 2026. Out-of-stock sizes are flagged, not offered. Per-gram and per-melt figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 10 g melt, the 10% load and the six-melt pack are illustrative working figures, not a recipe — CSI does not publish cavity weights, container fill weights or dye doses. The 13% (Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) ceilings are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Frequently asked questions

Which fragrance oil is best for wax melts in India?
No single oil — and no published measurement ranks them. Start with one oil per family: Lavender or British Rose (floral), Dark Vanilla or Cinnamon Vanilla (gourmand), Roasted Coffee, Fresh Strawberries or Mango Coconut (fruity), Eucalyptus Spearmint (fresh) and Sandalwood (woody). Test each at the same load in the same warmer and keep what your testers remember.
Can I use soy wax for wax melts?
Yes, many makers do. CSI does not list a wax sold specifically as melt wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (up to 13%) and CSI 464 (up to 10%) are container waxes with published ceilings. They can be softer in a mould than a dedicated melt wax, so pour a test, check release and firmness, and ask CSI on WhatsApp about firmer options and their stated maximums.
What is the maximum fragrance load for wax melts?
It is set by the wax, not the product. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the stated maximum is 13%; on CSI 464 it is 10%. For soy pearl, soy pillar, paraffin, beeswax or soy butter, no maximum is published in our data, so confirm it before going above a cautious test load. Never exceed 13%.
Do wax melts need a wick?
No. Melts are warmed in a wax warmer, so there is no wick, no wick sizing and no burn test for the melt pool. That removes one cost and one variable, and makes the oil and the wax the whole product.
How much does it cost to make one wax melt?
For an illustrative 10 g melt at 10% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, ₹8.81 to ₹13.29 in oil and wax, with oil at 100 g rates. A six-melt pack of Lavender is ₹64.75 before the ₹29.50 container, labels, labour, freight and GST.
Which moulds are good for wax melts?
CSI lists the Wax Sachet Mould (6 cavities, ₹588.82), Flower Silicon Mould / Wax Melts Mould (₹200.60), 40 Cavity Square (₹472.00), 15 Cavity Rose (₹153.40), 15 Star (₹177.00), 55 Cavity Coffee Bean (₹177.00), 9 Bar Chocolate (₹177.00), Cloud 30 cavity (₹529.82) and Mini Heart (₹153.40). Cavity weights are not published, so weigh one filled cavity before you plan oil.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is a percentage of the finished melt weight (oil = weight × load). The 10 g melt, the 10% load and the 60 g six-melt pack are illustrative; CSI does not publish mould cavity weights, melt-container fill weights or dye doses. Wax at ₹599.00 / kg (₹0.60 / g) gives ₹5.39 of wax per 10 g melt at 10%. Material cost excludes labour, labels, freight and GST. Fragrance-load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits; no ceiling is published here for other waxes. "Best-selling" refers to the Fragrance Oils collection's best-selling sort on the pull date. No throw measurements are published for any oil. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
