Why has my white candle turned yellow and started smelling sweeter? Vanillin. Cinnamon Vanilla states 2.5% vanillin and describes a moderate yellowing risk in light wax over time, normal and not affecting scent performance. The extra sweetness is usually your eyes briefing your nose — sniff blind to check. 0% vanillin options include British Rose and Jasmine.
How do I tell a cure change from a contaminated batch? Scope and character. Whole batch plus familiar notes in a new order is a cure; one jar out of thirty is the pour; a smell that was never there — musty, damp, smoky — is the room it cured in or the pitcher it came from. Two control jars cost ₹549.31 and settle it in fourteen days.
Can a fragrance oil go off in the bottle? A part-used bottle sitting warm and half empty can read flatter at the top over time. Prove it, do not assume it: pour a fresh candle from the same bottle and cure it fourteen days. If the fresh one is flat too, the bottle is the answer, not the candle. A 50 gm bottle to re-test is ₹271.40.
First, decide what actually changed
The sentence “it smells different after curing” hides three separate claims, and they need different evidence. The first is about direction: weaker, sharper, sweeter, flatter, or simply other. The second is about scope: the whole pour, or the one jar you keep on your desk. The third is about the reference — different from what, exactly. From the bottle, from the wet wax at the pour, from a candle you made in February, or from the memory of a smell you were excited about at nine in the evening three weeks ago.
Only the third one decides whether this page can help you. A candle that smells different from the bottle is behaving exactly as it should: the bottle is neat oil and the candle is 16 g of that oil spread through 200 g of wax, which at the series unit is 8% of wax weight. A candle that smells different from another candle of the same age, from the same pour, is a fault. A candle that smells different from the same candle yesterday is either maturation or storage.
This matters commercially because the two mistakes cost very different amounts. Judging early and scrapping costs you the materials: at 200 g of CSI 464 (₹101.48), 16 g of Cinnamon Vanilla at 1 kg pricing (₹72.88) and a C1 wick (₹5.90), a thirty-jar pour is ₹5,407.70 in materials and ₹8,239.70 once 150 gram lidded jars at ₹94.40 each are counted. Shipping a genuine fault costs you the customer. The four questions below are ordered so that the free checks come first.

What normal looks like, in your own handwriting
A cure does not add anything to a candle and does not take anything out of it except what leaves the open surface. What it does is change the balance of what reaches your nose first. On day one the loosest, lightest part of the composition is over-represented, because it has had no time to settle into the wax; that is the sharp, slightly raw edge people describe as chemical. Over the following fortnight the middle knits together and the heavy base materials — vanillin, amber, musks, woods, resins — start to carry. The candle smells rounder, often sweeter, and sometimes quieter at the top.
That description fits almost every complaint of “different” that turns out to be nothing. The test is whether the notes you wrote on day zero are still present in the notes you write on day fourteen, in a different order. If your day-0 note said “sharp cinnamon, thin vanilla” and your day-14 note says “round vanilla, soft cinnamon”, nothing went wrong. The Cinnamon Vanilla page lists cinnamon and clove at the top, vanilla bean and sugar in the middle and cream and butter at the base; that is the order in which the composition was built, and a cure walks down it.
The oil pages themselves set two different expectations, and both are honest. Several state a cure of 48 to 72 hours for soy — British Rose, Jasmine, Sandalwood and Blue Ocean all do. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally one to two weeks, and adds that soy fragrance throw improves significantly with curing time. Read together they say the same thing: the candle is testable in three days and finished in two to three weeks. A scent that is still moving between those two points is not faulty. Two pages go further and name the mechanism — Citrus Lemon says citrus benefits from a full cure for the best cold throw, and Woody Oud says oud benefits from a full cure for cold throw development.
The families that move most are the ones with the most weight at the bottom: gourmands, orientals, woods, ouds, heavy florals with creamy bases. The families that move least are the light, volatile ones — citrus, aquatic, fresh herbal — because there is less base to arrive late. If you are chasing a change in a citrus candle after three weeks, the cure is an unlikely culprit and you should go straight to question two.
Vanillin: when a change you can see gets mistaken for a change you can smell
Vanillin is the material responsible for most of the yellowing you will ever see in a white soy candle. Several CSI oil pages publish the figure. Cinnamon Vanilla states 2.5% vanillin and describes a moderate yellowing risk in light-coloured wax over time, adding that this is normal and does not affect scent performance. Vanilla Bean also states 2.5% and recommends testing with lighter waxes. Gardenia states 0.2% and calls the risk minimal, with a suggestion to test in bright white wax before full production. At the other end, British Rose, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Blue Ocean and Eucalyptus Spearmint all state 0% vanillin and no discolouration.
Two things follow. The first is that a cream candle turning ivory, or an ivory candle turning pale gold, is a cosmetic event with a published cause, and on several pages a published expectation. The second is subtler and catches experienced makers: your eyes tell your nose what to expect. A jar that has gone visibly warmer in colour is very often described as smelling “sweeter” or “heavier” by the same person who described it as balanced three weeks earlier, and the description follows the colour rather than the scent. The check is free — sniff with the jar out of sight, or have someone hand you three jars in a closed box.
Where colour genuinely matters is in what you promised. If your listing photograph shows a bright white candle and the jar that arrives in November is butter-coloured, the customer is not wrong to ask. That is an argument for choosing the wax and the copy to suit the oil, not for abandoning the oil. Either photograph the cured candle rather than the fresh one, describe the colour as warm or ivory in the listing, or pick a 0% vanillin oil for the white range and keep the vanillin-carrying oils for amber, ivory and coloured wax.

The five real faults, and the smell that gives each one away
If the colour is not the story and the whole batch has moved in the same direction in a way your day-0 note does not recognise, you are looking at one of five things. They are listed in the order of how often they turn out to be the answer in a small Indian workshop, not in the order that is most flattering to a supplier.
1. The candle absorbed the room it cured in
Wax is a soft, fatty solid with a large open surface sitting in your house for a fortnight. A pour curing two metres from a tadka pan, under an agarbatti holder, next to fresh paint, in a cupboard with naphthalene balls, or on a shelf above a damp monsoon carton will pick up what is in the air. The smell that results is almost always described as musty, smoky or “like the room”. This is the single most common cause of a batch that changed for the worse and the cheapest to fix: move the cure shelf. A control jar of the same pour kept in a different room, lidded, settles it in a fortnight.
2. Carryover in the pitcher, the sticks or the wick
A pouring pitcher that held an oud last week and a citrus this week is carrying a few grams of the first into the second, and on a 200 g pour a few grams is a large proportion of a 16 g dose. The same goes for a stirring stick used twice, a thermometer probe wiped on a cloth, and a funnel. The tell is a candle that smells like a blend nobody designed. Bamboo Stirring Sticks are ₹118.00 for five — a fresh stick per oil is a rounding error against ₹72.88 of oil in a jar. Isopropyl Alcohol Spray is ₹383.00 for 150 ml and ₹520.00 for a litre; the rule is to spray, wipe and let the pitcher dry completely before wax touches it, because alcohol left in a warm pitcher goes into the wax and reads as a sharp, thin note on day one that never settles.
3. The oil went in at the wrong temperature, or was not stirred into the wax
The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance to be added at 80–90°C and stirred slowly for two full minutes. The Eco Soy CSI 400 page gives 85°C in the same band, with a gentle two-minute stir. Under-stir and the oil is not evenly held: some jars in the pour smell strong, some smell thin, and the one on your desk may be either. Add too cool and the wax is already setting around the oil rather than taking it in. Both faults show as jar-to-jar variation within one pour, which is the fingerprint. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354.00 and removes the guess. Two of CSI’s oils publish low flash points — Gardenia at 98°C and Palo Santo at 93°C — and for those the page advice is to work at the lower end of the window.
4. The bottle changed before the candle did
A part-used bottle is mostly air. Every time it is opened, the headspace is refreshed with warm, humid Indian air, and the cap goes back on a thread with oil on it. A bottle that has spent a summer on a shelf in a top-floor room in Ahmedabad or Nagpur is not the bottle you bought. The tell is that a fresh candle made today from the same bottle does not smell like your day-0 note either — which is exactly what question four on the diagram tests. CSI does not publish shelf lives or storage conditions for the fragrance oils, so we will not invent one; keep bottles closed, cool, dark and as full as your buying pattern allows, and ask on WhatsApp if you need handling documentation.
5. It was a different batch of oil, or a different oil
Fragrance oils are manufactured in batches and small batch-to-batch variation is normal in the industry; it is also the explanation makers reach for first and confirm last. Confirm it properly by pouring the old bottle and the new bottle side by side in identical jars, identical wax, identical load, cured to identical age, and sniffing them blind. And check the obvious before you start: a few scent names in the catalogue are close enough to each other to be ordered by mistake, so compare the product handle on your two invoices, not the name you remember. Reordering from the order history rather than from a search removes the problem entirely.

Every argument on this page ends in the same place: a comparison. Memory is not a comparison. A cured jar against a photograph, a blotter, a retained candle and a written note is a comparison, and all four cost almost nothing if you set them aside at the pour instead of hunting for them three weeks later.

Four workshops, four verdicts
These are illustrative walkthroughs of the reasoning, not case files. The prices are live; the decisions are the ones the diagram produces.
Mumbai, August: “the whole range smells damp”
A maker pours forty jars in the last week of July and stacks them, lids off, on an open rack near a window that is open most of the day. By mid-August every scent reads slightly musty underneath. Question 1: colour unchanged. Question 2: all forty, so not one jar. Question 3: a smell that was not in the day-0 note — musty is new. Question 4 is not needed, because a control pair kept lidded in an interior cupboard smells like the note. Verdict: the cure room. The fix is a closed shelf away from the window and lids on once the jars are cool. Cost: nothing. Had the maker instead replaced the oil, the bill would have started at ₹4,554.80 for a kilogram of a scent that was never at fault.
Ahmedabad, May: “my vanilla has gone flat”
A part-used 500 gm bottle has spent April and May on a shelf in a top-floor room. The candle from it, cured fourteen days, smells duller at the top than the maker remembers. The retained blotter from February still smells the way the note describes. A fresh pour from the same bottle, cured fourteen days, comes back equally dull. Question 4 answers itself: the bottle, not the candle. Verdict: replace the bottle and store the next one cool, dark and closed. A ₹271.40 50 gm bottle proves it before a kilogram is committed.
Bengaluru, festive run: “jar six is wrong”
Out of a thirty-jar pour, one jar smells thin. Question 2 does the work: twenty-nine jars agree with the note, one does not. That is not a cure question and not an oil question. It is the pour — the last jar off a melt that was not stirred for the full two minutes, or the jar that was filled after a top-up. Verdict: process. Fix the stir and the pour order, sell the twenty-nine, keep jar six as a teaching sample. At ₹274.66 a jar, the loss is one jar, not thirty.
Delhi, October: “the white candles have gone yellow and sweet”
A Diwali range in white wax with Dark Vanilla at 8% is ivory by mid-October and the maker reads it as oversweet. Question 1 stops the enquiry: the page states that the oil contains vanillin and will yellow white or light wax over time. Sniffed blind against a retained jar, the scent is where the day-0 note said it would be. Verdict: cosmetic, published, and a copywriting problem rather than a formulation problem. Either photograph the cured candle, or run the white range on a 0% vanillin oil — British Rose at ₹49.09 of oil a jar against ₹122.34 for Dark Vanilla, a difference of ₹73.25 a candle.
What to do with the batch once you know
A diagnosis is only worth the money it saves, so decide what happens to the jars. There are four honest outcomes and one that is not.
Sell it as it is. If the verdict is maturation or vanillin, nothing is wrong with the candle. Update the listing copy and the photograph so the customer gets what they see. Sell it at a discount as a seconds line. Appropriate for cosmetic variation and jar-to-jar inconsistency you can see. Keep it for testers and shop-counter samples. A slightly off batch is still a perfectly good demonstration jar and saves the good stock. Re-melt. Possible, but be honest with yourself about what it does: re-heating a cured candle to 80–90°C drives more of the light fraction away, so the re-poured candle will be heavier and quieter at the top than the original, and if the fault was an absorbed odour it is still in the wax. Re-melting is a wax and jar recovery, not a scent repair.
The outcome that is not honest is shipping a batch you know smells musty and hoping the customer does not notice. A candle sits in a small room for hours. They notice.

What this changes about how you buy oil
Three habits follow from everything above, and all three save money rather than spend it. Buy the small size first. A 15 gm bottle of Cinnamon Vanilla is ₹106.20 and a 50 gm is ₹271.40; a kilogram is ₹4,554.80. Two control jars and a fortnight from a 50 gm bottle tell you more about how an oil ages in your wax, in your room, than any description can — and that is the information a 1 kg commitment actually needs.
Buy against the wax you actually use. The same oil at the same load behaves differently in CSI 464 (₹507.40 a kilogram, page states up to 10% load), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00, up to 13%) and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 (₹650.00, up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C). Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399.00 does not publish a fragrance ceiling at all; where a figure is not published we say so and you should ask on WhatsApp rather than assume. Test in the wax you will sell in.
Buy for the colour you photograph. If your brand runs on white wax and crisp product photography, the 0% vanillin pages are worth the shortlist: British Rose at ₹49.09 of oil a candle, Jasmine at ₹62.77, Sandalwood at ₹80.43, Blue Ocean at ₹79.30, Eucalyptus Spearmint at ₹49.09. If your range is amber glass, tins or coloured wax, the vanillin question mostly disappears and you can buy on scent alone. Tin containers at ₹70.80 each in a pack of twelve hide colour change entirely, which is worth remembering for gourmand ranges.
