Best Fragrance Oils for Beginners in India
Share
What size fragrance oil should a beginner order? 15 gm to taste it, then jump. A 15 gm bottle scents about 187 g of wax at 8% — roughly 2.7 votives of 70 g, or one 150 g jar with a little left over. Trial grams cost 1.3 to 2.1 times the 1 kg rate, so never build a price list on them.
Which fragrance oils should a beginner avoid at first? The perfume-grade pages, where the smallest pack is 50 g — Vanilla Orange Blossom at ₹415.00 and Khamrah Qahwa at ₹753.00 — and any page that prints no candle usage range. Also leave 2.5% vanillin oils out of clear glass until you have tested them.
What does a complete first fragrance order cost? ₹1,294.56 buys 500 g of CSI 464 wax, three 15 gm oils, five votive jars, ten wicks, a thermometer, a Wick Centering Device and wick stickers — enough for a genuine first evening of candle making with change from two thousand rupees.
What makes a fragrance oil beginner-friendly
Every experienced maker has a drawer of oils bought on a name. The way out of that drawer is boring and effective: judge the page before you judge the scent. A beginner-friendly oil is one whose product page publishes enough for you to plan a batch without asking anyone, and which is sold in a size small enough that being wrong costs less than a cinema ticket.
Four things make a page plannable.
1. A printed candle usage range
This is the single most important line. Most CSI oil pages give one — commonly Soy: 6–10% of total wax weight — and 72 of the 92 print a range of some kind. That number tells you how many grams to weigh out. Without it you are copying a figure from a foreign blog and hoping. Eucalyptus Spearmint prints up to 10% for soy and up to 6% for paraffin; Citrus Lemon prints 6–10% for soy and 6–8% for paraffin. Both are immediately usable.
2. A vanillin figure, or an honest discolouration note
Vanillin darkens with time and light and turns pale wax cream. It is cosmetic — it does not change how the candle burns or smells — but it changes what the customer sees. Pages that print 0% vanillin (Eucalyptus Spearmint, British Rose, Jasmine, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Verbena) are the safest first purchases for clear glass. Pages that print 2.5%, such as Cinnamon Vanilla and Vanilla Bean, tell you honestly to expect toning.
3. A flash point, ideally a numeric one
A flash point is a transport, storage and handling property. It is not the temperature at which fragrance burns away, and no CSI page claims it is. Sixteen oils print a numeric figure; Eucalyptus Spearmint prints 199°C, British Rose 192°C, Sandalwood 203°C. Fragrance goes into soy at 80–90°C, comfortably below all of those. Only three CSI oils print a figure close to the pour window — Neroli at 85°C, Palo Santo at 93°C and Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C — and those should be added at the lower end of the window. None of the five beginner picks below is in that group.
4. A 15 gm pack
Roughly half of CSI's oils are sold in a 15 gm size. That size exists for exactly this situation, and a beginner should treat its availability as a selection criterion, not a footnote. An oil whose smallest pack is 50 g is an oil you are committing to before you have smelled it in wax.
The 15 g ladder: what a trial bottle really buys
At 8% of wax weight, 15 g of fragrance oil scents 188 g of wax. At 6% it stretches to 250 g; at 10% it shrinks to 150 g. In finished candles that is roughly 2.7 votives of 70 g, or one 150 g jar with a quarter of a second jar left over. Enough to learn something. Not enough to sell anything.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 70 g votives at 8% | 150 g jars at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 gm | ₹94.40 | ₹6.29/g | 3 | 1 |
| 50 gm | ₹212.40 | ₹4.25/g | 9 | 4 |
| 100 gm | ₹342.20 | ₹3.42/g | 18 | 8 |
| 500 gm | ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19/g | 89 | 42 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,068.00 | ₹3.07/g | 179 | 83 |
The per-gram column is the part beginners miss. The trial gram is not the same price as the production gram, and the gap is not small: 2.05 times for British Rose, 1.92 times for Citrus Lemon, 1.57 times for Mango Coconut, 1.49 times for Eucalyptus Spearmint and 1.34 times for Lavender. The oil in one 70 g votive costs ₹30.40 if you bought Citrus Lemon at 15 gm and ₹15.86 if you bought it at 1 kg.
Neither figure is wrong. They are answers to different questions. The 15 gm rate is the price of finding out; the 1 kg rate is the price of production. Problems start when a beginner prices a candle from the first number and then cannot understand why the business seems to make no money, or prices from the second and runs out of margin on the first ten orders.
When that moment comes, the arithmetic is friendly. One hundred 70 g votives need 7 kg of wax — ₹3,551.80 at the CSI 464 5 kg rate — and 560 g of oil at 8%, which is ₹1,784.16 of British Rose bought at the 500 gm rate of ₹3.19/g. That is a real production run costed from real prices, and it is the moment the 1 kg pack starts to make sense.
Five safe first scents
These five were chosen for what their pages publish, for having a 15 gm pack in stock, and for covering five different directions so that your first five candles teach you five things. They are not ranked, and none of them is claimed to throw harder than another — CSI publishes no comparative throw data and it would be dishonest to invent it.

| 1 kg | ₹5,221.00 | ₹5.22/g |
A sixth, with a condition attached: Roasted Coffee at ₹93.22 for 15 gm prints Soy: 6–10%, a flash point of approximately 191–193°C, and an honest note that its vanilla and caramel base notes contain vanillin. It has three five-star reviews and it is one of the easiest scents to sell in India. Buy it — but pour it into a tin or a ceramic jar, not clear glass, until you have watched a test candle for a month.
Four kinds of oil to leave until later
1. Perfume-grade fine fragrance oils
CSI's fine fragrance and perfume-inspired pages are genuinely premium products, and their pages say candles are one use among several at 7–10%. The problem for a beginner is the entry ticket: the smallest pack is 50 g. Vanilla Orange Blossom starts at ₹415.00, Khamrah Qahwa at ₹753.00, Club De Nuit Intense at ₹1,203.00. The oil alone in a single 70 g votive at 8% costs ₹134.74 with the last of those, against ₹15.86 with Citrus Lemon at the 1 kg rate. Those oils belong in a range with a price to match, which is a decision for later, not for your first evening.
2. Pages that publish no candle usage range
Of CSI's 92 oils, 20 print no candle percentage. Orchard Pear, Honeydew Melon, Saffron Cedarwood, Mahogany Shea, Santal Noir and Tangerine are among them. Orchard Pear has a five-star review from a maker who used it in a finished product, so this is not a quality judgement. It is a planning one: with no printed range you have no starting number, and a beginner needs a starting number more than an experienced maker does. If one of these is the scent you want, message WhatsApp and ask for the range before ordering.
3. High-vanillin oils in clear glass
Cinnamon Vanilla prints 2.5% vanillin and a moderate-discolouration note; Vanilla Bean prints the same and advises testing with lighter wax. Both are excellent oils and Cinnamon Vanilla carries the widest ceiling in the collection at up to 13% of total wax weight. But a first batch poured into clear votives will go cream within weeks, and a beginner cannot yet tell whether that is the oil, the wax, the sun on the shelf or something they did wrong. Start these in tins.
4. Anything that is currently out of stock
Some of the most searched names on CSI's list — Baccarat Rouge 540, Lattafa Khamrah, Tomford Ombre Leather and Mogra among them — are unavailable at the moment. Building a first range around a scent you cannot reorder is a fast route to a product you have to discontinue. Check the size you want is in stock, not just the product, and prefer scents with several pack sizes available so you have somewhere to grow into.
Your first order, priced to the rupee
This is a complete list, not a shopping suggestion. Every line is a live CSI product at its September 2026 price, taxes included, and the quantities are matched to each other so nothing is left stranded.
| Item | Size | Price | Why it is on the list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 500 g | ₹260.00 | Single-pour container soy; page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring, and a ceiling of up to 10% |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | 15 gm | ₹68.44 | Up to 10% for soy, flash point 199°C, 0% vanillin, IFRA certification stated |
| Citrus Lemon | 15 gm | ₹81.42 | Soy 6–10%, approximately 0% vanillin, cheapest per gram at scale |
| British Rose | 15 gm | ₹94.40 | Soy up to 10%, flash point 192°C, 0% vanillin |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | Pack of 5 | ₹159.30 | ₹31.86 each; small enough that a failed candle is not a disaster |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 10 wicks | ₹59.00 | ₹5.90 each; cotton and paper fibres, sold for natural waxes |
| Pen Thermometer | 1 | ₹354.00 | The only way to know you added fragrance inside the stated window |
| Wick Centering Device | 1 | ₹118.00 | Keeps the wick upright while the wax sets |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 40 stickers | ₹100.00 | ₹2.50 each; holds the wick tab to the base |
Two things to notice about the quantities. First, 500 g of wax absorbs about 40.0 g of fragrance at 8% — so three 15 gm bottles, at 45 g, are already slightly more oil than this much wax can take. That is deliberate: you will re-melt failures, and you will want to pour the same scent twice. Second, five votives at 70 g use only 350 g of the wax, leaving enough for a second round after you have learned something.
If assembling a list is not how you want to start, the Scented Jar Candle Making Kit For Beginners at ₹555.78 is an honest alternative, and the Aroma Candles Making Kit at ₹1,770.00 sits between the two approaches. Which route makes sense depends on whether you want to learn the materials or just make a candle this weekend — the kit versus separate supplies guide works through the trade-off properly.
Your first batch, step by step
That single session costs ₹246.70 of British Rose-equivalent fragrance and about half a bag of wax, and it produces six candles, a page of notes and — crucially — a comparison. Repeat it with the other two scents and you have a range, tested, in under a month. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026; a batch poured by about mid-October has time for a 14–21 day cure plus shipping.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells all 92 of the oils discussed here and makes more money when you buy a kilo than when you buy 15 grams — so it is worth saying plainly that a beginner should buy 15 grams. This page also says that the trial size is the most expensive way to own fragrance, at up to 2.05 times the 1 kg rate; that CSI's own perfume-grade oils are the wrong first purchase; that 20 of the 92 oil pages print no candle usage range and are therefore harder to start with; and that a ready-made beginner kit at ₹555.78 is a reasonable alternative to assembling the list below.
Every price comes from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included; the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance loads, flash points, vanillin percentages and IFRA statements are quoted only as each product page prints them, and a load is always a percentage of wax weight. Where a page publishes nothing, this guide says so rather than estimating. Cure windows described as general practice are exactly that; the figure attributed to a CSI page is the CSI page's own.
Message WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for help choosing a first set, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation, bulk pricing when you outgrow the small packs, or the unpublished flash point or usage range of any oil on the list.
