Best Fragrance Oils for Container Candles
Share
Does jar size change which oil I should buy? It changes the grams far more than the shortlist. At 8% of wax weight, a 70 g votive holds 5.6 g of oil and a 600 g jar holds 48 g — the same oil, roughly nine times the material. Plan the size ladder, not a different scent for every jar.
Which oils will not yellow a white candle in clear glass? The pages that print 0% vanillin: British Rose, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Jasmine, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Verbena and Ylang Ylang. Yellowing is cosmetic, not a safety matter.
How much does the fragrance cost per container candle? At 8% and the British Rose 1 kg rate of ₹3.07/g: ₹17.18 in a 70 g votive, ₹36.82 in a 150 g jar, ₹147.26 in a 600 g jar. The jar itself usually costs more than the oil below 150 g.
What a container actually changes about your oil choice
A container candle burns inside a vessel that holds the melt pool. Compared with a pillar, that changes three things a fragrance buyer can act on, and almost nothing else.
One: the fill weight fixes the grams. Fragrance load on every CSI oil page and every CSI wax page is a percentage of wax weight. Once you fix the jar, you have fixed the wax, and therefore the oil. A 70 g votive at 8% is 5.6 g of oil. A 600 g jar at the same 8% is 48 g. Same oil, same percentage, roughly nine times the material and nine times the bill.
Two: the material decides whether discolouration matters. Several CSI oil pages state a vanillin content and warn of warm toning — Cinnamon Vanilla prints 2.5% vanillin with a note about moderate yellowing, and Vanilla Bean prints the same 2.5%. In a clear glass jar with undyed soy that shows. Inside an aluminium tin or a ceramic jar nobody ever sees the wax. The oil has not changed; the visibility has.
Three: the lid decides what the customer smells before lighting. A lidded jar accumulates fragrance in the headspace between pours and pick-ups; an open jar on a shop table has been venting since the day it was made. That is a merchandising fact, not a chemistry one, and it is the reason a lidded 150 g black glass jar at ₹107.00 often sells a light floral better than an open votive at ₹31.86.
Everything else people attribute to "container oils" — throw, hang, projection — is wick, wax, load and cure. There is no such thing as an oil formulated for jars as opposed to pillars, and no CSI oil page claims one. What the pages do publish is a candle usage range, and 72 of the 92 oils publish one. That is the number to shop with. The rest of this guide turns it into grams, rupees and a shortlist, and the deeper mechanics of hot throw belong to the throw guides, not here.
Grams in the jar, not percent on the label
Percentages are how the pages are written, so percentages are how you must order. But percentages are a terrible planning unit, because the same percentage means a different purchase in every jar you sell. Convert once, at the start, and keep the table on the wall of your workspace.
| CSI container | Wax fill | At 6% | At 8% | At 10% | Oil cost at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clear Glass Votive Jar | 70 g | 4.2 g | 5.6 g | 7.0 g | ₹17.18 |
| Tin Container 85 gram | 85 g | 5.1 g | 6.8 g | 8.5 g | ₹20.86 |
| Tin Container 135 gram | 135 g | 8.1 g | 10.8 g | 13.5 g | ₹33.13 |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | 150 g | 9.0 g | 12.0 g | 15.0 g | ₹36.82 |
| Apothecary Jar with Dome Lid | 500 g | 30.0 g | 40.0 g | 50.0 g | ₹122.72 |
| Borosilicate Jar with Golden Lid | 600 g | 36.0 g | 48.0 g | 60.0 g | ₹147.26 |
Read the last column as a purchasing decision, not a price tag. If you sell 100 jars a month at 150 g, you are buying 1.2 kg of fragrance oil a month at 8% — which puts you straight into the 1 kg pack, where British Rose costs ₹3.07/g instead of the ₹6.29/g you pay at the 15 gm size. If you sell 100 votives a month, you are buying 560 g, and the 500 gm pack at ₹3.19/g is the sensible unit.
The same table also explains a question that comes up constantly: whether to move from 8% to 10%. On a 150 g jar the step adds 3.0 g of oil per candle. Across a 100-candle run with British Rose that is ₹920.40 on a total material bill that moves from ₹22,582.60 to ₹23,503.00. It is an affordable experiment. Whether it is worth it is a burn-test question, and more oil does not automatically mean more scent — the load ceiling explainer covers why.
Glass, tin and ceramic: the container decides the discolouration question
Vanillin is a fragrance material that darkens over time and turns pale wax cream, then amber. It is cosmetic. It does not affect the burn, the scent or the safety of the candle, and CSI's pages say so where they mention it. But a customer who paid for a white candle and received a yellow one does not care that the change is cosmetic, and that is a returns problem rather than a chemistry one.
CSI's oil pages handle this unusually well: many print an explicit vanillin percentage. British Rose, Jasmine, Blue Ocean, Sandalwood, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Verbena, Ylang Ylang and Sage and Cedarwood all print 0% vanillin and a matching no-discolouration note. Cinnamon Vanilla prints 2.5% and a moderate-discolouration warning; Vanilla Bean prints 2.5% and advises testing with lighter wax; Gardenia Tuberose prints 0.2% and calls the risk minimal.
| Container | Live price | Does the customer see the wax? | What that means for oil choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear glass votive, 70 g | ₹31.86 each at 10 | Yes, completely | Buy the 0% vanillin pages. A 2.5% vanillin gourmand will show as cream within weeks |
| Clear glass with golden lid, 150 g | ₹94.40 each at 10 | Yes, completely | Same rule. If you want a vanilla range in clear glass, dye the wax or accept the toning and say so on the listing |
| Black glass with black lid, 150 g | ₹107.00 each at 10 | No | Any oil on the list. Discolouration is irrelevant; choose on published load and cost |
| Aluminium tin, 85 g / 135 g | ₹70.80 / ₹96.76 each at 12 | No | Vanillin gourmands are free here. Tins also travel better than glass on Indian courier routes |
| Ceramic jar | ₹129.80 | No | Any oil. Ceramic is the heaviest option per candle, which matters on shipping weight rather than on scent |
| Apothecary glass with dome lid, 500 g | ₹212.40 | Yes | 0% vanillin unless dyed. At 40 g of oil per candle the cost of getting this wrong is the highest on the list |
There is a commercial argument hidden in that table. Opaque containers widen your shortlist from roughly the eight 0% vanillin pages to the whole collection, including the gourmands that sell hardest in Indian gifting — Roasted Coffee, Apple Cinnamon, Chocolate Fudge and Cinnamon Vanilla. If you are starting a range and you already know you want vanilla-led scents, start in tins.
Lids, shelves and what the customer smells before lighting
Cold throw is what a candle smells like unlit. It is the only thing most retail buyers ever experience before paying, because almost nobody lights a candle in a store. A closed lid lets fragrance build in the small volume of air above the wax, so opening the jar delivers a concentrated hit. An open votive on a counter has nothing stored up.
This is why lidded containers earn their extra cost on a shelf and why the same oil can feel strong in one format and flat in another. Of CSI's containers, the Black Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹107.00, the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹94.40, the Apothecary Jar with Dome Lid at ₹212.40 and the aluminium tins all close. The 70 g votives do not.
A real customer review of the CSI tins makes the counterpoint honestly: the lid that holds the scent in is also the lid that can be stiff to prise off once the candle is poured and set. That is a genuine trade-off and worth checking on a sample of twelve before you commit to a season's stock.
Lighter, more volatile scent families lose their top notes fastest in an open container, which in practice means citrus and fresh-aquatic profiles. That is one argument for pairing Citrus Lemon or Blue Ocean with a lidded jar rather than an open votive, and for keeping stock boxed until it goes on display. It is not an argument for overloading them: Citrus Lemon prints 6–10% for soy and Blue Ocean prints up to 10%, and those are the numbers to work inside.
Store finished candles lidded, upright and out of the sun, and do not stack heavy boxes on glass during the monsoon when cardboard softens. None of this is fragrance selection, but it is where a lot of "the oil got weaker" complaints actually come from.
Six CSI oils that suit container candles, by the job
Each pick below states the candle usage range printed on its own page, the flash point and vanillin content where the page gives them, and the cost of the oil alone in a 150 g jar at 8% — 12 g. None of these are ranked by throw, because CSI does not publish comparative throw data and nobody should invent it.

| 1 kg | ₹3,738.00 | ₹3.74/g |
Two honest omissions. Several of CSI's most attractive container oils publish no candle usage range at all — Orchard Pear, Honeydew Melon and Saffron Cedarwood among them. They are not bad oils, and Orchard Pear carries a five-star review from a maker who used it in a finished product. They are simply harder to buy without a printed starting point, so ask on WhatsApp for the range before you scale a jar range around one. And Gardenia Tuberose, a genuinely luxurious creamy floral for jars, prints a flash point of 98°C — add it at the lower end of the 80–90°C window rather than at the top.
What a finished container candle actually costs
Below is the full material cost of one candle in each of the six containers: CSI 464 wax at the 5 kg rate, British Rose at 8% priced at the 1 kg rate, the container at its live per-unit price, and a wick. The 70 g to 150 g fills take a single Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90; the 500 g and 600 g fills are costed with two Thick (C2) wicks at ₹9.44 each, because a jar that wide will not reach the glass on one wick. Wick count and size still have to be settled by a burn test — CSI does not publish a diameter chart per wick.
| Container | Wax (CSI 464) | Oil at 8% | Container | Wick(s) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 g votive | ₹35.52 | ₹17.18 | ₹31.86 | ₹5.90 | ₹90.46 |
| 85 g tin | ₹43.13 | ₹20.86 | ₹70.80 | ₹5.90 | ₹140.69 |
| 135 g tin | ₹68.50 | ₹33.13 | ₹96.76 | ₹5.90 | ₹204.29 |
| 150 g glass jar with lid | ₹76.11 | ₹36.82 | ₹107.00 | ₹5.90 | ₹225.83 |
| 500 g apothecary jar | ₹253.70 | ₹122.72 | ₹212.40 | ₹18.88 | ₹607.70 |
| 600 g borosilicate jar | ₹304.44 | ₹147.26 | ₹200.00 | ₹18.88 | ₹670.58 |
The fragrance is 19.0% of the material cost of a 70 g votive and 22.0% of a 600 g jar. In other words, in small formats you are mostly buying glass, and in large formats you are mostly buying wax and oil. Two consequences follow. First, on votives and small tins it is almost never worth downgrading the oil to save money — the saving is a few rupees and the scent is the product. Second, on 500 g and 600 g jars the oil choice is a real budget decision, and a jump from Citrus Lemon to a premium oil can add more per candle than the jar costs.
A worked case. A Pune maker pours twelve 85 g tins for a corporate Diwali order. That is 1,020 g of wax — ₹517.55 at the CSI 464 5 kg rate — and 81.6 g of oil at 8%, which is ₹250.35 of British Rose. The 100 gm bottle at ₹342.20 is not enough for two such orders; the 500 gm at ₹1,593.00 covers six of them and drops the rate to ₹3.19/g. Buying the size that matches your order book, rather than the size that matches your nerves, is where most of the saving in fragrance is.
The three-jar test that settles it in one evening
Three 50 gm bottles — British Rose, Blue Ocean and Sandalwood — cost ₹730.80 together and will run this protocol three times over. That is a smaller number than most makers spend on one wrong 1 kg purchase, and it produces a written record you can show a wholesale buyer.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells the wax, the oil and the jar on this page, which is exactly why the page says the unflattering things. It says the fragrance is the smallest line in a small container candle — 19.0% of the material cost of a 70 g votive against 22.0% in a 600 g jar — so upgrading your oil will not rescue a candle that is really failing on wick size or cure. It says several attractive CSI oils publish no candle usage range at all, and names them rather than quietly recommending them. And it says a bigger jar is not free scent: the oil bill rises in step with the wax.
Every price comes from live CSI stock in September 2026, taxes included; the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance loads are the figures printed on each oil page, expressed as a percentage of wax weight, and wax ceilings are the wax manufacturer's stated formulation maximums. Flash points and vanillin percentages are quoted only where a page prints them; where a page prints nothing, this guide says so instead of estimating. No comparative throw testing is claimed, and no jar is described as performing better than another.
