How much fragrance oil for 1 kg of soy wax? 80 g at 8%, 100 g at 10%, 130 g at 13% — the last only in Chunks or CSI 468, and only if the oil page’s range allows it.
Does the fragrance oil page change the answer? Yes: the lower figure governs. Fresh Strawberries gives 6–9% for candles, so it stops at 9% (18 g per 200 g) even in a 13% wax.
The answer in grams: start at 8% of the wax weight
CSI’s soy wax pages state fragrance load as a percentage of the wax weight — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says “13% of total wax weight” and puts its recommended range at 8% to 13%. So the oil is a fraction of the wax you weigh into the pot, not of the jar, and not of the finished candle. At 8%, 200 g of wax takes 16 g of oil and pours 216 g. At 10% it takes 20 g; at 13%, 26 g.
Why 8% as the start? Because it is the starting point the Chunks page itself names, because it sits inside every published CSI soy ceiling — including the 10% on CSI 464 — and because it sits inside the 6–10% range many CSI oil pages give for candles. It is the load least likely to be wrong for any CSI soy wax and oil pairing, which is exactly what a first batch needs. It is not automatically the load you will sell; it is the load you can judge from.

Read the rows as real candles. 100 g of wax is a small jar or a tin sample; at 8% it takes just 8 g of oil, which is why a 15 gm bottle (₹94.40 for British Rose) doses fewer candles than people expect. 150 g and 200 g are the common gifting sizes. 250 g is a large single-wick jar. 1 kg is a batch: 80 g of oil at 8%, 100 g at 10%, 130 g at 13%. Half-grams matter at the small end — 19.5 g for 150 g of wax at 13% — which is one reason a scale that reads to 1 g or better earns its place. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives a full ladder: 8% as a starting point with reliable cold and hot throw, 10% as the recommended balance for most container candles, and 13% as the maximum for premium or complex fragrances, with the instruction to test burn thoroughly at that level. If you pour Chunks, the page has already answered this article’s question: 16 g per 200 g to start, 20 g as the everyday target, 26 g as the top.
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states only a maximum: up to 10%. That makes it the grade where the arithmetic matters most, because its everyday load and its ceiling can be the same number. Starting at 8% leaves 2 percentage points of headroom — room for a weighing slip, a heavier oil, or a later decision to step up — without ever crossing the stated maximum. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 also states only a maximum, up to 13%; in general practice a coconut-soy blend is started at the same 8% and stepped up only if the cured candle asks for it.
Eco Soy CSI 400 is the cheapest soy grade and publishes a fragrance-add temperature (85°C, stir gently 2 minutes, pour directly) but no fragrance ceiling. We will not invent one. Ask on WhatsApp before you settle a load, and in the meantime do not go above the range printed on your oil’s page. The same applies to the soy grades that publish no working figures at all.
The oil’s own page can set a lower limit
Many CSI fragrance oil pages print a recommended load for candles, and they are not all the same. When the wax page and the oil page give different upper figures, the lower one governs the pairing. Each is formulation guidance from the people who made that wax or that oil, and the stricter of the two is the one that protects the candle. The table pairs a few oil pages with the three CSI grades that publish a ceiling.

Two lessons hide in that table. First, a 13% wax does not make every oil a 13% oil: Fresh Strawberries tops out at 9% in any of the three grades, so paying for headroom you cannot use buys nothing. Second, oil pages also move the bottom of the range. Autumn’s page starts at 7%, not 6%, so a 6% Autumn candle is below what its own page recommends — worth knowing before you conclude an oil is weak.
Some pages describe strength rather than a range. The Mahogany Teakwood page describes an extremely strong hot throw in soy and says a 7–9% load is often enough, which, at ₹8,800.00 per kg, is a reason not to default to 10% with it. Oil pages also carry facts that matter beyond grams: British Rose lists 0% vanillin and a 192°C flashpoint, while the Dark Vanilla page notes vanillin, which can yellow white wax over time — a colour issue, not a dosing one (why 0% vanillin matters). Where an oil page gives no candle range, ask on WhatsApp and start at 8% in the meantime.
What each load costs per candle, with live oil prices

The steps are what you feel. With British Rose, moving a 200 g candle from 8% to 10% adds ₹12.27; from 10% to 13% adds another ₹18.41. With Dark Vanilla the first step alone adds ₹30.58. On a 50-candle order the British Rose step from 8% to 10% is ₹613.60 — worth paying when the cured candle needs it, and not worth paying on principle. In the series costing unit (200 g CSI 464, 16 g British Rose, an Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90) the candle costs ₹156.47 before the jar, and the oil is about 31% of it.
Pack size moves the number almost as much as load does. The same 16 g of British Rose costs ₹67.97 from the 50 gm bottle, ₹54.75 from 100 gm, ₹50.98 from 500 gm and ₹49.09 from 1 kg — a gap of ₹18.88 per candle between the smallest and largest pack. One reviewer at the top of this page felt checkout was “little costly” once the kilogram amounts were totalled; that is fair, and the honest answer is that small bottles are for testing, and the price per gram only falls once you commit to a pack that matches your batch.

At 10%, each of these wax pack sizes pairs with a British Rose pack exactly one-tenth its weight: 500 g of wax to 50 gm of oil, 1 kg to 100 gm, 5 kg to 500 gm, 10 kg to 1 kg. At 8% the same bottle leaves a fifth over — useful as a spare for a test pour or a second fragrance trial. Buy the oil pack that matches the wax pack you are actually pouring, not the smallest bottle out of caution.
Percent of wax or percent of candle: the ceiling trap
Some calculators and courses express fragrance as a percentage of the finished candle — wax plus oil — instead of the wax alone. CSI’s pages use the wax. The two agree closely at low loads and drift apart as the load rises. What matters on this page is what the other convention means in CSI’s terms: 8% of the finished candle is 8.7% of the wax; 10% of the finished candle is 11.1% of the wax; 13% of the finished candle is 14.9% of the wax.
Look at those against the ceilings. A CSI 464 maker who follows a “10% fragrance” recipe written in the finished-candle convention is pouring 11.1% by the page’s measure — over its stated 10% maximum. A Chunks or CSI 468 maker following a “13%” recipe from the same source is at 14.9%, over 13%. At 8% the gap is under a percentage point and rarely matters. So the rule is simple: before you copy a percentage, find out which weight it was a percentage of. If the source does not say, assume it could be the candle and stay a step below the ceiling.
The same confusion hides inside jar sizes. If a jar holds 200 g in total and you want 8% of the wax, the wax is about 185 g and the oil about 15 g; if you instead weigh 200 g of wax and add 16 g, you have 216 g to fit in the jar. Neither is wrong — but decide which number “200 g” is before the melter is on.
Real CSI jars, real grams
Wedding favours in 70 g votives. The Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram page gives a fill of about 70 g of wax (₹31.86 each in the 10-pack). Treat 70 g as the wax: 5.6 g of oil at 8%, 7 g at 10%. A hundred favours need 560 g at 8% or 700 g at 10% — at Lavender’s 1 kg price, 560 g of oil is ₹2,923.76. Small candles tempt makers to go heavy so they “smell of something”; a small pool releases less scent whatever the load, so keep to the page limits (oil for 100 wedding-favour candles).
Sample sets in 85 g tins. The Golden Aluminium Tin Container page gives an 85 g fill (12 for ₹360.00, ₹30.00 each). At 8%, 6.8 g of oil; at 10%, 8.5 g. Tins heat through faster than glass in a delivery van, so for pan-India sample boxes in summer, general practice is to keep a margin below the ceiling rather than sit on it. Gifting jars at 150 g and 180 g. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid gives about 150 g of wax (₹94.40 each); the Ceramic Jar (₹129.80) a 180 g fill. At 8%: 12 g and 14.4 g. At 10%: 15 g and 18 g. These are the sizes where most Indian D2C sellers make their margin, so they are where a costing at 8% versus 10% matters most — use the cost table above.
A statement candle at 500–600 g. The Borosilicate Glass Jar 600 gram page suggests 500–600 g of wax (₹200.00). At 8%, 40–48 g of oil; at 10%, 50–60 g; at 13% (Chunks or CSI 468 only), 65–78 g. A candle this size is usually a wide jar that needs more than one wick, and at these grams a single weighing slip is small in percentage terms — but it is the one candle where going to the ceiling costs real money for a result the wick, not the load, usually decides.
In every case, leave a little headroom below the jar’s stated fill: oil adds weight and volume, and a jar filled to its brim leaves nowhere for the melt pool. Dosing a batch: weigh, add, record
A note on tools. Weigh in grams on a digital scale that reads to at least 1 g; fragrance oils are not exactly one gram per millilitre, and drops, spoons and capfuls vary from bottle to bottle, so volume measures turn 8% into anything between 7% and 10% without you knowing. CSI’s Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00) is very low in stock at the moment, so any accurate kitchen scale that reads in grams will do. Stir with something that will not whip in air — Bamboo Stirring Sticks are 5 for ₹118.00 — and read the add temperature with a Pen Thermometer (₹354.00).
Indian conditions add two practical notes, both general practice. In a 40°C summer, candles that will travel in hot vans or sit in un-air-conditioned shops are better a step below the ceiling than on it, because heat gives excess oil every chance to show on the surface. And in the monsoon, keep oil bottles tightly capped and out of damp storerooms; weigh from a dry bottle onto a dry scale.
When to move off 8% — and which way
Move up — to 10% in Chunks or CSI 468, or to CSI 464’s 10% ceiling — when a candle cured for at least two weeks has a full melt pool at the jar wall and still smells weaker than you want in a normal room. If the pool is small, a bigger load will not fix it; that is a wick question, and the reasons more oil is not always stronger are covered in why more fragrance oil doesn’t always mean stronger candles and why a candle still smells weak at 10%. Move down when you see oil beading on the surface, a greasy film, or seeping at the glass — or when a strong oil such as Mahogany Teakwood already fills the room at 8%.
