If your oil page prints a lower figure, that one governs.

Is the add temperature the same as the pour temperature? No, and confusing the two is the most common mistake on this subject. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the fragrance goes in at 80–90°C and the wax is poured at 75–80°C. You add, you stir for two minutes, the wax falls, and then you pour.

Does adding fragrance oil above its flash point destroy it? Flash point is a transport, storage and handling property, not the temperature at which fragrance burns away. Even so, stay below the figure your page prints: Gardenia Tuberose publishes 98°C and Neroli publishes 85°C, which sits inside the usual band — add those at the cool end.

What add temperature does CSI publish for coconut soy? None. The Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 page publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, but no fragrance addition temperature — that is not published, so ask on WhatsApp rather than borrowing a soy figure.

The ceiling: whatever your oil page prints, if it prints anything. Sixteen of the ninety-two pages give a flash point; the lowest is 85°C on Neroli and 93°C on Palo Santo.
The method: off the heat, read the thermometer in the middle of the melt, add at the target, stir 2 minutes, then let it fall to the grade's pour figure.

What temperature should you add fragrance oil to wax at?
80–90°C, on every CSI soy grade whose page publishes an addition figure, and 85°C is the number to aim at — the Eco Soy CSI 400 page names it, and it sits in the middle of the band the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives for adding fragrance before a 2-minute stir. The window exists because the oil has to go into the wax as a solution rather than sit in it as droplets: molten wax at 85°C is thin enough to take it and you still have minutes of working time before the wax starts setting. Two things narrow the window. First, your grade's own pour figure sits below it — Chunks pours at 75–80°C, CSI 468 at 58–60°C — so the add temperature is a step before the pour, not the same step. Second, the oil page can impose a lower ceiling: sixteen of CSI's ninety-two oil pages print a flash point, and while Vetiver at 206°C or British Rose at 192°C leave the band alone, Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C, Palo Santo at 93°C and Neroli at 85°C do not. Where two published figures apply, work to the lower one. The rest is measurement: a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 against a 5 kg batch worth ₹4,269.80 in materials is not a close decision.

What CSI's wax pages actually publish, grade by grade

Start with the figures somebody is accountable for, not with a number from a forum.

Three CSI soy pages publish something about the moment fragrance goes in. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is the most complete: melt to approximately 80–85°C, add dye at full melt, add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes, pour at 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 names a point rather than a range — add fragrance at 85°C, within 80–90°C, stir gently for two minutes, pour directly. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring.

The rest do not publish an addition temperature, and we are not going to fill the gap with an estimate. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, which tells you the add step has to sit above the pour and above the melting point, but the figure itself is not published — ask on WhatsApp. Soy Pillar Wax, Premium Coconut Soy Wax, Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Soy Butter Wax publish neither an addition temperature nor a fragrance ceiling.

IF YOU REMEMBER ONE NUMBER
Make it 85°C. It is the single point CSI names on a soy page, it sits in the middle of the 80–90°C band, it clears every published flash point in the range except Neroli's, and it leaves you a comfortable fall to a 75–80°C pour. Aim at 85°C, accept 82–88°C, and write down what you actually measured.

Why there is a window at all

The oil is not being poured onto the wax. It is being dissolved into it, and dissolving has conditions.

Think of sugar in tea. Stir it into hot tea and it disappears — one liquid, evenly sweet everywhere. Stir it into a cup that has gone cold and you get a gritty layer at the bottom and a drink that tastes of nothing until the last mouthful. Fragrance oil in wax behaves similarly: molten wax at 85°C is thin enough for the oil to disperse through it and stay dispersed as the wax sets, so every gram of the finished candle carries the same dose.

That gives the window its two edges. Below it, the wax is thickening and starting to set; the oil has nowhere to go and ends up carried as fine droplets or streaks rather than dissolved, which shows up later as uneven scent, mottling, or oil at the surface. Above it, nothing dramatic happens to the fragrance — flash point is not a burning-off point — but you are holding volatile material at temperature for longer than you need to, and you are closer to whatever ceiling the oil page prints. There is no advantage to going higher, so there is no reason to.

The two-minute stir belongs to the same idea, and the Chunks page states it plainly: add at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes. Two minutes at temperature is what gets the oil distributed; the technique itself, and what under-stirring does to a batch, is a subject of its own. What matters here is that the clock starts while the wax is still in the window, which is why you add at the top of the fall rather than at the bottom.

Adding the oil at pour temperature to save a step. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the pour figure is 75–80°C and the add figure is 80–90°C — they are two different moments, and the pour figure is the later one. Adding at 75°C and pouring immediately gives the oil no time at temperature and no stirring window before the wax starts to set. Add first, stir two minutes, then let the wax fall to the pour figure.

The second ceiling: what your oil page says

Sixteen of ninety-two oil pages print a flash point. Two of them change what you do.

Flash point is a transport, storage and handling property — the temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite in the presence of a flame. It is not a measure of fragrance strength, it does not rank hot throw, and it is not the temperature at which an oil "burns off" in wax. What it is, for a candle maker, is a ceiling: there is no reason to take a liquid to or past it in an open pot, and several good reasons not to.

Most of the numbers CSI publishes sit far above the add window and can be ignored in practice. Three do not. Gardenia Tuberose publishes 98°C and its page instructs adding below that figure, noting that a standard soy addition temperature is well within the safe range. Palo Santo publishes 93°C. Neroli publishes 85°C — the lowest on the list and inside the 80–90°C band itself, so with Neroli you work at the bottom of the window and check the thermometer before the bottle is opened.

The rule that follows is the same one this series applies to fragrance loads. Where the wax page and the oil page both publish a figure, the lower one governs. A 13% wax ceiling with a 10% oil range means 10%; an 80–90°C wax window with an 85°C oil flash point means the bottom of the window, or lower. That principle costs you nothing and protects you from the only version of this decision that ends in a scrapped pot.

Treating flash point as a strength rating. It appears on the page next to fragrance descriptions, so it gets read as one — as though 206°C were somehow a stronger oil than 93°C. It is not. Flash point tells you how the liquid behaves near a flame, which is a shipping, storage and workshop-safety matter. Palo Santo at 93°C and Vetiver at 206°C are both described on their pages as moderate-to-strong; the only thing the difference changes is where you hold the thermometer.

How to actually hit the number

Everybody agrees on 85°C. Far fewer people have measured what their pot is doing when they pour.

Write down what you measured Melt temperature, add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, room temperature. Five figures per batch. The batch that goes wrong six weeks from now is diagnosed from these, or it is not diagnosed at all.

One measurement is worth doing once and never again: time how long your pot takes to fall from 90°C to 80°C. In a 1 kg steel pitcher in an air-conditioned room it can be surprisingly quick; in 5 kg in a melter on a 40°C afternoon in Nagpur it can be several times longer. That number is your real working window, and it decides whether you can weigh, add and stir comfortably or whether you need to prepare everything before the wax comes off the heat.

Judging temperature by how the pot looks. Clear, mobile wax covers a range of at least twenty degrees, and the difference between 90°C and 70°C is invisible. Makers who work by eye typically add too cold in winter and in air-conditioned rooms — where a small pot can lose several degrees while the oil is being weighed — and then blame the oil for streaks or a weak throw. The whole problem costs ₹354.00 to remove.

Tools that make the number repeatable

A thermometer tells you the temperature. A melter decides how long you have to work with it.

Two different problems hide here. Knowing the temperature is a measurement problem and costs ₹354.00 to solve. Holding the temperature is a thermal problem, and it is the one that separates a comfortable pour from a rushed one — especially for anyone working in a cold room, a hill station winter or hard air conditioning, where a small pot falls out of the window while the oil is being weighed.

None of this is compulsory. A steel vessel over a pan of water, a ₹354.00 thermometer and a clock will hit 85°C as reliably as any melter, and generations of candles have been made that way — the argument for a melter is time and consistency across repeated batches, not accuracy. Start with the thermometer, work for a month, and let the batches tell you whether you need the rest (double boiler versus electric melter).

Indian workshops: 40°C afternoons, AC rooms and hill-station winters

The published figure is the same in Kochi and in Shimla. How long you get to work at it is not.

In a Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur summer, with the room above 40°C, wax falls slowly. The add step is comfortable — you have minutes rather than seconds — but the fall to a 75–80°C pour takes longer than you expect, and the jars then cool slowly too, which changes the surface rather than the scent. Plan the pour around the thermometer, not the clock, and expect a hot-weather batch to occupy the bench longer than a winter one.

The opposite problem is sharper. In an air-conditioned room, a hill-station winter or a January morning in the north, a 1 kg pot can drop out of the window while you are weighing the oil. That is the situation to prepare for in advance: weigh first, keep the vessel covered, warm the beaker, and consider a melter that holds temperature rather than a pot that only loses it. It is one of the most common reasons a maker thinks their oil has weakened when in fact it went in at 68°C.

Monsoon adds a different risk that is not about temperature at all: water. Condensation on a cold beaker, a wet spoon, or steam from a water bath carried into the pot introduces moisture the wax cannot hold, and moisture in the wax makes trouble at the surface later. Dry every tool before it touches the melt, and keep the water bath below a rolling boil.

Re-heating a batch that has fallen too cold, again and again. Bringing the pot back to 85°C to rescue an under-temperature addition is reasonable once. Doing it three times in an evening means the wax and the oil have been held hot for far longer than any single step intends, and you are now testing patience rather than a recipe. Re-melt if you must — it can be done sensibly (re-melting a failed candle) — but change the preparation so it does not happen a fourth time.

What the number is worth in rupees

The thermometer is the cheapest thing in the room. The pot is not.

Put a batch on the bench and the arithmetic answers itself. A 5 kg pack of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹2,537.00 and 400 g of Gardenia Tuberose at 8% of wax weight is ₹1,732.80, so one pot holds ₹4,269.80 of materials before wicks, jars or labour — about ₹170.79 a candle across twenty-five 200 g candles. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354.00, or a little over 8% of that single batch, and it is not consumed.

Even at the smallest working scale the answer holds. One kilogramme of CSI 464 with 80 g of Gardenia Tuberose is ₹853.96 of materials; the thermometer costs less than half of it and lasts for years. That is the whole financial case, and it is why this page spends more words on how to measure than on which number to measure to.

80–90°C on the CSI soy grades that publish a figure, and 85°C is the number to aim for — the Eco Soy CSI 400 page names it and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives the band along with a 2-minute slow stir. If your fragrance oil page prints a lower flash point, work below that instead.
Is the fragrance addition temperature the same as the pour temperature?
No. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks fragrance goes in at 80–90°C and the wax is poured at 75–80°C; on Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 the pour figure is 58–60°C. Add, stir for two minutes, let the wax fall, then pour.
What happens if I add fragrance oil above its flash point?
Flash point is a handling and transport property, not the point at which fragrance burns away, so a few degrees over is not the disaster it is often described as. It is still a ceiling worth respecting in an open pot. The figures that matter on CSI's list are Neroli at 85°C, Palo Santo at 93°C and Gardenia Tuberose at 98°C.
What temperature should I use if my fragrance oil page does not publish one?
Only sixteen of CSI's ninety-two oil pages publish a numeric flash point, and most publish no addition temperature either. Work to the wax page's figure — 80–90°C on the soy grades that state one — and ask on WhatsApp for the oil in question. Do not borrow a number from another oil because it is in the same fragrance family.
Does add temperature affect hot throw?
Indirectly. Temperature decides whether the oil is dissolved evenly through the wax or carried unevenly, and uneven distribution shows up as inconsistent scent between jars from the same pot. It is not a strength dial: adding at 90°C rather than 85°C will not make a candle louder, and adding at 68°C can certainly make one worse.
Do I need an electric melter to control the temperature?
No. A steel vessel over water, a ₹354.00 Pen Thermometer and a clock will hold 85°C perfectly well. A Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 buys time and repeatability rather than accuracy, and matters most in cold rooms and air-conditioned workshops where a small pot falls out of the window quickly.
