Best Citrus Fragrance Oils for Candle Making in India

The twelve citrus oils and what their pages state

Citrus is a top-note family. The materials that make a lemon smell like a lemon are small, light molecules that evaporate readily — which is why they hit you first out of the bottle and why they are first to leave a melt pool. That is not a criticism: it is why citrus sells into kitchens, bathrooms and the whole Indian summer, and why a citrus candle gets judged more harshly than a vanilla one. So the practical question across twelve bottles is not "which smells brightest" — they all do — but what each page says is holding the brightness up. The table quotes every page's stated notes exactly as published: a pyramid where the page gives one, a profile where it doesn't.

Read that table by its last column and the family sorts into three commercial tiers. Citrus over almost nothing: Citrus Lemon's base is another citrus note, Citronella's is the single word "Wood", Zesty Lemon's is a musk it calls "very subtle" — the bright, high-turnover kitchen and bathroom scents. Citrus over a woody or musky floor: Lemongrass and Lime's cedarwood, Grapefruit Oleo's light woods and amber, Juicy Orange's musk and amber. Citrus as an opening to something else: Bergamot Amber's vanilla-and-musk base and Orange no.3's amber-and-cedar dry-down are warm fragrances that begin with citrus, and they price accordingly.

Every pack, every price, cost per candle

Per-candle figures use the price per gram of each oil's largest in-stock pack, the best rate it is listed at. Load follows the series convention: a 200 g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil, at 10% it is 180 g plus 20 g. Several pages phrase their percentage as a share "of total wax weight" instead, which shifts the gram figures slightly — pick one convention and keep it for every batch.

₹146.67 separates the cheapest citrus candle from the dearest at 8%, a ratio of 4.24 to one per gram. Across a hundred 200 g candles that is ₹14,667.20 of working capital before wax, wick, jar or label. The per-gram basis is always the largest pack actually in stock: Grapefruit Oleo's 1kg is listed at ₹3,407 but sold out, so its honest rate today is the 100g one.

The fade question, answered honestly

This complaint deserves a mechanism, not a sales answer. Fragrance oils are blends of materials with different molecular weights: the light ones lift and leave quickly, the heavy ones stay in the wax and release slowly. A citrus accord is weighted towards the light end by definition — that is what makes it read as citrus. So three things happen more visibly than with a woody oil: cold throw changes over the first two weeks as the wax crystallises; hot throw depends on how much melt-pool surface you have opened; and the character shifts during a long burn as the top notes go. CSI cannot promise an outcome in your wax, your jar and your room — what we can do is say which levers are real and which the pages support.

Five citrus oils worth ordering, priced

Five picks, chosen for what their pages publish and what they cost. Each table shows every listed pack, its price, its price per 100 g and how many 120 g candles at 8% — 9.6 g of oil each — it pours. A 120 g jar is the format most Indian citrus candles sell in, and at 9.6 g it turns even a 15 g sample into a real test candle.

Lemongrass and Lime — stated "6-10% of total wax weight for candles"; the cheapest citrus with a published woody anchor, ₹83.20 a candle at 8%.

Grapefruit Oleo — stated "7-10% in soy, paraffin, or blended wax"; only the 100g is in stock, so ₹54.56 at 8% is the honest figure.

Bergamot Amber — stated "6-10% for soy wax candles" with "Start at 8% for your first batch"; a warm fragrance that opens with citrus.

Neroli Fragrance Oil — citrus-floral, measured "Flashpoint: 85°C", "Vanillin Content: 0%", stated "Up to 10% for soy wax". A low measured figure is a reason to follow your wax page's stated add temperature.

Juicy Orange — stated "8-10% in soy wax" and "yellowing in white or uncoloured wax is unlikely"; flat at ₹7.49–₹7.50 a gram from 100g up.

Neroli Signature Grade — a full pyramid and no other published figures at all.

Tangerine — dearest citrus in stock at ₹12 a gram, with a stated pyramid and nothing else. At ₹191.98 a candle at 8% it is a 120 g-jar oil.

Work up the ladder and let a cured burn test decide each promotion. Four 15 g packs — Citrus Lemon ₹81.42, Zesty Lemon ₹90, Verbena ₹106.20, Lemongrass and Lime ₹116.52, ₹394.14 — each pour one 187 g candle at 8% and tell you which two a customer picks blind. Then 100 g of the two survivors (₹300 and ₹360, ₹660), ten 120 g candles of each, enough for a wick trial and a cure comparison. Then 500 g of the winner at ₹1,420–₹1,720, which is 31 × 200 g candles. The kilo — ₹2,832 to ₹3,400, 62 candles at 8% — is for a scent that has already earned it. CSI does not list 5 kg or 10 kg fragrance packs, so more than a kilo means multiple 1 kg bottles at the listed rate, and that rate is the ceiling for a larger quantity, not a discount you can assume.

Which wax and which load

Every citrus oil here that states a load states two — one for soy and a lower one for paraffin — and your wax states its own. The number you pour is the lower of the two, every time. Where an oil page states nothing (Citronella, Tangerine, Neroli Signature Grade), the wax page's figure is all you have, and starting at the bottom of its band is the sane move.

Do that arithmetic once. A 200 g citrus candle at 8% on CSI 464 is ₹93.36 of wax plus ₹45.31 of Citrus Lemon = ₹138.67; on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with Orange no.3 it is ₹110.38 plus ₹128.51 = ₹238.89. Neither includes jar, wick or label — but the ₹100.22 gap is your whole citrus pricing strategy, decided by two clicks at checkout.

What the pages publish — and what they leave blank

A product page is evidence, and a blank is also evidence: it tells you which questions you will answer yourself. No flash point here has been estimated, converted or borrowed.

On flash point: three of these twelve publish a measured value, two publish only the shared perfume-grade threshold, one declines and points you at the SDS, six say nothing. "Greater than 93°C" is a statement about suitability for alcohol-based products; it is not this oil's flash point and must never be written down as one. On IFRA: an IFRA standard governs maximum use levels by product category for consumer safety. Several pages refer to it in their own words — Citrus Lemon says "As per IFRA Use within safe usage rates for body washes, scrubs, and lotions"; Grapefruit Oleo and Orange no.3 both say "IFRA compliance Yes - skin-safe within category limits" — and four (Verbena, Neroli, Neroli Signature Grade and Tangerine) do not mention it at all. No page publishes a certificate number, amendment, category or date, so nobody should tell you one exists for a given oil. CSI supplies documentation on request through WhatsApp.

On colour, citrus wins: five of the twelve state zero or approximately zero vanillin and a sixth calls yellowing unlikely, so this is the family where a white, frosted or clear vessel has a page behind the decision.
