Quick answers — read this first
What makes a fragrance oil "professional"? Not strength. Documentation you can transcribe and a pack you can reorder. A professional oil has stated notes, a stated candle load, a stated discolouration behaviour, a published flash point where one has been measured, and a 1 kg pack in stock — so the recipe you prove in October is still buyable in March.

Which oils clear that bar at CSI today? Fifteen. They are the oils that publish a measured flash point and list 15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg all in stock — from Citronella at ₹2,891 per kg to Vanilla Bean at ₹7,646. The full table is below.

What does repeatability actually cost? Mostly nothing — it is weighing instead of pouring, and writing instead of remembering. What not doing it costs is measurable: on a 400-candle batch, one percentage point of load drift is ₹2,454.40 to ₹6,116.80 depending on the oil.

Do I need to re-test every new bottle? Not a full qualification — but yes to an incoming check. Keep a sealed retained sample from the bottle you qualified, smell the new bottle blind against it, and pour one control jar before the new bottle enters a customer batch.

Choose oils by what the page publishes, then prove them once: stated notes, stated candle load, stated vanillin behaviour and a measured flash point are all free to read before you spend anything. Everything else — throw, pool behaviour, colour at day 21 — only your own cured burn can tell you.

Bar length is what a single percentage point of drift adds to one 400-candle batch, priced at the listed 1 kg rate. Nobody decides to overdose an oil; it happens because the load was never written down, or because it was measured by eye instead of weighed. That is the whole professional argument for a spec sheet, in rupees.

Buy the oils whose product pages give you the most transcribable facts, then prove them once in your own wax and never change two things at the same time. On live CSI stock in September 2026, fifteen oils publish a measured flash point and list all five packs — 15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg — in stock, which is exactly the combination a studio needs: a cheap rung to sample, a mid rung to test, a production rung to reorder. Four of them cover most professional ranges. Eucalyptus Spearmint is the cheapest documented kilo at ₹3,068 with Flashpoint 199°C and 0% stated vanillin; Jasmine at ₹3,923 states Flashpoint 185°C, up to 10% in soy and 0% vanillin; Sandalwood at ₹5,026.80 states Flashpoint 203°C; Dark Vanilla at ₹7,646 states Flashpoint ~191-193°C, a 6–10% candle load and "Vanillin content Present - will yellow white wax" — which is a specification, not a defect. At 8% in a 200g candle that is ₹49.09, ₹62.77, ₹80.43 and ₹122.34 of oil respectively. None of those pages tells you how the oil throws in your jar on your wick. That is the part you buy with 100 g and twenty-one days, and then write down so you never have to buy it twice.
One line: pick oils that publish numbers, prove one recipe per scent, fix the load in writing, keep a retained sample, and check every new bottle against it before it meets a customer.

What "professional" actually means when you are buying fragrance

Amateurs are judged on their best candle. Professionals are judged on their worst one.

A hobby maker who finds a wonderful combination by accident has had a good day. A studio that finds a wonderful combination by accident has a problem, because the next hundred candles have to smell like that one and nobody wrote down how it happened. Everything that separates professional fragrance buying from enthusiastic fragrance buying follows from that single asymmetry: you are buying the ability to repeat, not the sensation of discovery.

Which changes what you look for on a product page. Strength stops being interesting, because strength in the bottle is not strength in a melt pool and no page can promise either. What becomes interesting is anything you can copy into a document and check again later: the stated notes, the stated load percentage for your wax family, the stated vanillin content, the measured flash point where the page has one, the pack ladder, and the reviews that other Indian makers left on that exact listing. Those are facts with dates on them. A phrase like "rich and long-lasting" is not.

The second change is that the decision stops being about the oil alone. A candle's smell is produced by a system — oil, load, wax, wick, vessel diameter, cure, and the room it burns in. Move any element and the output moves. So the professional question is never "is this a good oil?" but "is this a good oil in the one system I have already fixed?"

The mistake: treating a strong first impression as a qualification. An oil that smells enormous straight from the bottle is telling you about its top notes and its concentration, not about how much of it survives ninety minutes in a 6 cm melt pool. Makers who buy a kilo on a bottle sniff usually discover the gap after the batch is poured. The fix is a rule, not a skill: no oil enters a spec until it has been burned, in your wax, after a proper cure. Third, a professional buys inside a supply reality. An oil that is perfect and only listed in 100 g is a sampling scent, not a production scent — not because it is worse, but because a range built on packs you cannot restock will eventually ship a candle that smells different from the photograph. The pack ladder is part of the specification. So is the honest note that CSI is a supplier, not a manufacturer of fragrance: the store lists the oils, states what the pages state, and supplies documentation on request. The performance verdict is yours to produce and yours to record.

The repeatability screen — and the fifteen oils that clear it

The most useful screen you can run costs nothing and happens before you smell anything.

Here is the screen, in three questions. One: does the page publish a measured flash point? Fifty-one of the 107 listed oil pages mention a flash point, but only 18 state an actual measured value; 32 carry only the template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold used on perfume-grade listings rather than a measurement of that oil, and 56 pages say nothing at all. Two: is every rung of the pack ladder in stock, so that sampling and production can both happen without a substitution? Three: does the page state a candle load and a discolouration behaviour, so you know what you are committing to before you pour?

Fifteen oils pass all three today. That is not a ranking of quality — it is a ranking of documentation, which is the only thing a supplier can hand you before you make a candle. Sorted by the 1 kg price, with the flash point quoted exactly as the page states it.

Two honest observations. First, the set is dominated by single-note and classic candle scents, because it is the candle-focused listings that publish measured values; the perfume-grade pages carry the threshold line instead. If your brand needs those directions, you have less published specification and more of your own testing to do. Second, seven of these fifteen pages never mention IFRA at all — British Rose, Verbena, Cinnamon, Ylang Ylang, Palo Santo, Neroli and Vanilla Bean. Best-documented on flash point does not mean best-documented on anything else.

Read a measured flash point as a handling fact, not a grade
A flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air under test conditions. It is a classification used for handling and transport. It is not a quality score, and a higher number does not mean a stronger candle — the fifteen oils above span 85°C to 203°C and their candle performance does not follow that order. What it does give you is a documented working margin: the Gardenia page, at Flashpoint 98°C, says in as many words to "ensure you add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C". Follow the add-temperature band on your wax page, ask CSI for the SDS figure, and burn test.

Four oils to build a professional spec on

Four scents cover a fresh, a floral, a woody and a gourmand — enough for a small professional range, and each one documented well enough to write a specification from before the first pour. Every card shows every listed pack, the price per 100 g, and roughly how many 200g candles at 8% each pack makes. Note what the 15 g rung produces: ≈0. Fifteen grams is a smelling rung, not a pouring rung — useful for shortlisting, useless for a test jar.

The most transcribable page in the range at this price. It states Flashpoint 199°C, a recommended load of up to 10% for soy wax, up to 6% for paraffin, Vanillin Content 0% with "zero risk of discoloration or yellowing in your candles or wax melts", and a scent profile of "Crisp eucalyptus with a refreshing spearmint finish". For a studio that sells white or uncoloured wax in clear glass, a stated 0% vanillin is a genuine planning fact: it removes one of the four things you would otherwise have to test before a launch. Its 15 g rung at ₹68.44 is the cheapest entry point on any oil in the range, which makes it the natural benchmark scent to keep in every blind panel. No reviews on the listing yet — so treat throw as unproven until your own burn says otherwise.

The most expensive kilo of the four at ₹7,646, and the most useful example of what a good product page looks like. It states Flashpoint ~191-193°C, a candle load of "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours", a pyramid of "Rich vanilla, spice" over "Deep caramel, cream" on "Dark amber, warm musk", and then the part most suppliers leave out: "Vanillin Content Present Vanilla and amber base notes contain vanillin - will yellow white wax over time". That sentence is worth money. It tells you to design this scent into amber, black or deep-dyed formats — or to accept and describe the colour change — instead of discovering it on a shelf in week six. Plan the format around the specification, and the specification stops being a problem.

Two listings, one name. A professional reorder should never travel as a scent name. Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean are listed at identical prices at every rung — 15 g ₹130, 100 g ₹790, 1 kg ₹7,646 — and are different oils with different stated pyramids and different stated vanillin (Present versus 2.5%). Similarly, Dark Vanilla Oud is a third, separate listing. Record the product link and the exact variant name in your spec sheet and order by those. The five places repeatability actually breaks

When a customer says "this one smells different", the cause is almost never the oil. It is one of five things, and four of them are inside your own workshop. The value of knowing the list is that each has a cheap detection method, so you can find the cause in an evening instead of blaming a supplier and reformulating a range.

Notice the ordering. The first four are yours, and they are where almost all drift lives. Only the fifth involves the supplier, and it is the one cause you cannot inspect — which is why its control is a reference sample rather than an argument. No CSI page publishes batch test data, so a dated retained sample is the only genuine comparison either side has, and it costs a sealed 15 g bottle and a label.

Never change two things between batches. The temptation, when a batch is slightly weak, is to raise the load and move to a thicker wick and extend the cure. Do all three and the next batch may be fine — and you will have no idea which change did it, which means you cannot cost it or reproduce it. Change one variable, pour a small control batch, and record the result. Turning a passed test into a specification you can reorder from

A qualification is not finished when the candle smells good. It is finished when a person who was not there can reproduce the candle from a piece of paper. The sequence below takes one scent from a 100 g bottle to a locked production entry, and it is deliberately boring — the point is that it produces the same result in March.

Copy the page before you orderOpen the product page and transcribe, verbatim, only what it states: the flash point if there is a measured one, the candle load, the cure time, the vanillin or discolouration line, the note profile, and the exact variant names and prices with today's date. Leave blanks where the page is silent — no page in the range states a shelf life or storage instruction, so those lines stay empty rather than guessed. Blanks are information: they tell you what your own test has to establish.

Buy 100 g and pour four identical jarsA 100 g bottle is about six 200g candles at 8% (16 g each), so 64 g pours four test jars and leaves headroom for a re-pour. Fix everything except the oil: one wax, one load inside the wax's stated band, one wick, one vessel, one add temperature, one stir time. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are a sensible qualification wax because the page publishes the whole envelope — 8–13% with 10% recommended, fragrance in at 80–90°C, pour at 70–80°C.

Cure to your dispatch rule, not to your patienceThe Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. For anything you sell, 14 to 21 days is standard practice for soy containers. Burn one jar at day 7 and one at day 21 so the spec records how much the cure is contributing — that number is what stops a future batch being dispatched early. Record measurements, not impressionsMinutes to a full melt pool touching the glass. Pool depth. Flame height and any mushrooming or soot. Cold throw at arm's length and hot throw from a doorway at 30, 60 and 120 minutes, scored 1–5 by someone who did not pour the candle. Surface condition at day 14 and day 21. Colour against an unscented control from the same wax. Those seven lines are the qualification.

Lock the load and the format, then buy the kiloWrite one load per wax and one format per oil — and where the page flags vanillin, write the vessel colour into the spec rather than hoping. Retain a sample and date itDecant 15 g from the qualified bottle into a small sealed container, label it with the oil, the variant, the invoice date and the qualification date, and keep it out of the working area so it does not get used. That sample is your reference for every future bottle. When one arrives, smell the two side by side blind before the new bottle touches a customer batch — the check takes two minutes and is the only objective comparison either you or a supplier can make.

An oil is professional when a stranger can reproduce your candle from your paperwork.
Everything else — the note pyramid, the flash point, the reviews, the price per gram — is input to that document. If the specification is complete, the scent survives a busy December, a new pair of hands and a bottle you have not opened yet. If it lives in your head, it does not survive any of them.

What to ask for — and what no product page will tell you

A page can tell you what a fragrance is. Only a document can tell a stockist what it is allowed to be used in.

IFRA — the International Fragrance Association — publishes standards that set maximum use levels for fragrance materials by product category, for consumer safety. The category matters: a level that applies to a leave-on body product is not the level that applies to a candle, because the exposure is different. An IFRA document for a specific fragrance states those levels for that blend, which is why a stockist, a marketplace or a hotel buyer may ask for one. What it does not tell you is anything about throw, strength or how the oil behaves in your wax.

Here is the honest position at CSI. Seventy-one of the 107 oil pages mention IFRA, in at least fifteen different phrasings, and 36 never mention it at all. The Jasmine page, for instance, phrases it as "Use within safe IFRA rates for lotions, body oils, and personal care products"; Citronella says "Follow IFRA guidelines for skin safety". No page anywhere publishes a certificate number, an amendment number, a category number or an assessment date, and no page attaches a document. So the correct professional move is not to read a badge and relax — it is to request the documentation for the specific oils in your specification, via WhatsApp, before the production order goes out. That is CSI's stated practice, and it is how MSDS and GST invoicing are handled too.

And the part no supplier here can supply. No CSI page states a shelf life, an expiry date or a storage temperature, and none publishes lab or third-party test results. Treat storage as your own general good practice — closed, upright, away from heat and direct sunlight, used in rotation — and treat the retained sample as your consistency check. "Not published, ask for the SDS" is a more professional answer to a customer than an invented figure.

Fixing the load fixes the cost

The last reason to write the load down is commercial. Load is the only part of a candle's cost that can move without anyone deciding to move it, and because oil is the expensive ingredient, small drifts are not small money. The table takes the four picks through a 400-candle month — a realistic figure for a working studio — at a fixed 8% and a fixed 10%.

One convention worth stating once. This guide calculates load as a share of the finished candle: a 200g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil. The Cinnamon Vanilla page instead states "Up to 13% of total wax weight", as does the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page — slightly different grams, which is exactly why a spec should record which convention it uses. A ceiling is a formulation limit on what the wax will hold, not a regulatory limit and not a target.

What makes a fragrance oil suitable for professional candle making?
Three things you can check and one you have to prove. Published specification — stated notes, a stated candle load, a stated vanillin or discolouration behaviour, and a measured flash point where the page has one. A pack ladder you can reorder, so sampling and production do not depend on different products. Documentation on request — SDS and IFRA papers for the categories you sell into. The fourth, performance in your own wax, wick and vessel after a full cure, no supplier can certify for you. It comes from a burn test you run and record.
Which CSI fragrance oils publish a measured flash point?
Eighteen of the 107 listed pages. Fifteen of those also list every pack rung from 15 g to 1 kg in stock, including Jasmine at Flashpoint 185°C, Eucalyptus Spearmint at 199°C, Sandalwood at 203°C and British Rose at 192°C. A further 32 pages carry only the line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based products and not a measurement of that oil. Where a page states nothing, ask for the SDS figure rather than assuming one.
Should a professional maker buy 1 kg bottles of every scent?
Only of scents that have passed a cured burn test and that you expect to pour regularly. A 1 kg bottle is about 62 × 200g candles at 8%, so a scent selling fewer than that in a quarter is better held in 500 g. And check the per-gram ladder before assuming the kilo is cheaper: on Sandalwood the rate is flat at ₹5.027 per gram from 100 g to 1 kg, so the kilo buys continuity of supply rather than a better price. How do I keep my candles smelling the same from batch to batch?
Fix and record five things: grams of oil per candle (weighed, never measured by volume), the add temperature and stir time from your wax page, the wick and vessel by exact name, the minimum cure before dispatch, and the oil by product link and variant. Then change one variable at a time and pour a small control batch when you do. On a 400-candle month, a single percentage point of unplanned load is ₹2,454.40 to ₹6,116.80 — drift is expensive before it is even noticeable.
Can CSI provide an IFRA certificate and an MSDS for each oil?
SDS and IFRA documentation are supplied on request via WhatsApp — that is CSI's stated practice, and it is also how bulk pricing and GST invoicing are handled. What the product pages themselves publish is only wording: 71 of 107 mention IFRA in around fifteen different phrasings, 36 never mention it, and none publishes a certificate number, amendment, category number or date. So ask for the documents for the specific oils and the specific product categories you sell into, and ask before the production order rather than after.
Do I need to re-test when I open a new bottle of the same oil?
Not a full qualification — an incoming check. Smell the new bottle blind against your sealed retained sample from the qualified bottle, weigh the intended dose rather than eyeballing it, and pour one control jar at your fixed load before the bottle enters a customer batch. If the control jar behaves like the record, carry on and note the invoice date in the spec. No CSI page publishes batch-to-batch test data, so a dated retained sample is the only objective reference either side has.
