Weighing your real jar before you convert kilograms into candles

Every count on this page uses nominal jar sizes: a 200 g jar is assumed to hold 200 g of finished candle. Yours may not. Jars sold by volume, jars with thick glass bases and jars you fill lower for a cleaner look can all hold noticeably less, and every gram of difference changes how many candles a bag makes.

Measure by pouring, not by the label

Weigh an empty jar. Pour it to the height you will actually use, with your wax and oil, let it set and weigh it again. The difference is your true fill weight. Water gives only a rough guide, because wax is lighter than water for the same volume, so a water fill overstates what the jar holds in wax. Do this once for every jar you stock and write the figure where you will see it when ordering.

A worked example

Say your “200 g” jar actually takes 170 g of finished candle. At 8% fragrance, wax is 92% of that: 156.4 g. One kilogram then fills six jars, not five (1,000 ÷ 156.4 = 6.4). A 10 kg bag fills 63 rather than 54 (10,000 ÷ 156.4 = 63.9) before losses, and 60 once you set 5% aside (9,500 ÷ 156.4 = 60.7).

Order against the real number. Otherwise you will buy oil, wicks and labels for 54 jars and have wax left for six more candles you cannot finish.

The opposite case

A jar that looks like a 250 g jar but takes 280 g of candle needs 257.6 g of wax. A 10 kg bag then fills 38 jars (10,000 ÷ 257.6 = 38.8), not 43. Underestimating the fill weight is how you run out of wax on the last tray of an order.
