Does Fragrance Oil Quality Affect Hot Throw?

What can I check before buying? Four things, all printed on CSI pages: the stated note structure (102 of 107 pages), the stated candle load (81 of 107), a measured flash point (18 of 107 state a value) and a vanillin or discolouration statement (62 of 107). That is genuine information, and it still will not rank two oils for throw.
What can I never check from a page? Concentration. No page in the range states its aroma-material-to-diluent ratio, and none publishes a laboratory report. Any inference you draw about "strength per gram" from a price or an adjective is a guess.
So how do I decide? Run two oils against each other at equal mass in identical jars, same wax, same wick, same cure — four jars, ₹1,179.42 of materials including the two 50 g bottles. That is the only comparison that carries weight.
Four claims wearing one word
Before anything can be tested, the question has to be split. When a maker calls an oil good quality they usually mean one of four things, and the four have almost nothing in common. Separating them is most of the work, because each carries a different kind of evidence.
Concentration. The idea that a gram of one oil carries more aroma material than a gram of another, the rest being diluent. It is the claim behind almost every "you need less of this one" sentence, and it is the one you cannot check: across all 107 CSI oil pages there is no ingredient list, no INCI naming, no aroma-chemical percentage and no physical property beyond flash point and solubility. Some pages gesture at it — several perfume-grade listings say "Start at 7% and adjust based on your wax blend" rather than the 8–10% typical elsewhere — but a lower suggested starting load is a recommendation, not a measurement.
Material choice. Which aroma materials the blend is built from, and therefore how it behaves in heat. This is the claim that genuinely bears on hot throw, and the one you can partly read: the stated pyramid tells you where the weight sits, which is why the note structure on 102 of 107 pages is the most useful paragraph on any oil page.
Batch consistency. Whether the kilo you buy in January smells like the one you buy in June. Several CSI pages assert consistency in marketing copy; none publishes batch data, and no assurance replaces your own check. Sample every new bottle against a retained reference before it enters production.
Documentation. Whether the supplier hands you a safety data sheet and IFRA paperwork when you ask. This one has a clean answer: CSI supplies documentation on request through WhatsApp rather than publishing it, and only two of the 107 pages mention an SDS at all. Ask before you commit to a kilo, not after.

Three pages, one template, three different facts
Sage and Cedarwood, Palo Santo and Ylang Ylang Flower are all single-note style oils using the same specification block. Side by side, the identical rows stand out — "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax", "Cure Time: 48–72 hours for soy wax" and a vanillin statement of 0% on each. The rows that differ are the flash point and the price, and neither distinguishes the three for hot throw.

Price is not a quality index
The most common shortcut is to assume the dearer oil is the stronger one. Across the CSI range the correlation simply is not there, and the diagram above shows it: Santal Noir at ₹9.12 a gram publishes no flash point, while Zesty Lemon at ₹3.40 a gram states a full three-tier pyramid, a vanillin figure, a stated soy load and an explicit "Available on request / SDS" for the flash point. Price tracks the cost of the materials a perfumer chose and the market for the scent. It does not track how much of the blend reaches a room.
Two price facts matter before you start comparing. First, per-gram price mostly falls with pack size and then flattens: Palo Santo is ₹7,080 per kg at 15 gm and ₹6,018 per kg at every size from 50 gm upward, so the saving is in the step from a trial to a 50 g bottle, not from 500 g to 1 kg. Second, the per-candle gap between a cheap and a dear oil is modest in rupees — ₹84.96 against ₹109.88 in one 200 g candle — which makes the wrong decision affordable once and expensive at scale: ₹12,460 across 500 candles.

The equal-mass paired test, costed
This is the whole method, and its discipline is entirely in what you hold constant. Same wax from the same bag, same load as a measured weight, same wick code, same jar, same add temperature, same stir time, same pour session, same cure conditions, same number of days. Two jars per oil, because one jar is an anecdote and two is a comparison. The example below runs Sage and Cedarwood against Palo Santo because their pages state identical loads and cure times, which makes the comparison genuinely clean — but the design works for any two oils.

Concentration, carrier and the bottle illusion
A fragrance oil is a mixture of aroma materials, often with a solvent or carrier that makes the blend pourable, stable and dosable. The proportion of each is a formulator's decision, and commercially confidential almost everywhere in the industry. Practically, that means "this oil is more concentrated" is a hypothesis you hold until a candle disagrees with it.
It also explains the most common misreading in the trade. An uncapped bottle presents a very high concentration of vapour straight to your nose, undiluted by wax and unconstrained by a pool, so every oil smells emphatic there. Nothing about that predicts what the same material does dissolved at 8% in soy and released from a few square centimetres of warm surface. The bottle-versus-candle gap has its own guide; the short version is that the bottle is a different experiment.
There is one place where a concentration claim becomes actionable, and it is a load decision rather than a quality judgement. Where a page states a lower starting load than the range's norm — several perfume-grade listings say "Start at 7% and adjust based on your wax blend" — treat that as an instruction to begin low and climb, testing at 7%, then 8%, then higher if the wax's ceiling allows. Starting at the top of the band because you paid a premium is how you end up past a solubility limit with a sweating candle and no idea which decision caused it.
What to ask for instead of a claim
If you are placing an order large enough to matter, the useful conversation is not "is this a good oil" but a short list of requests with definite answers. Ask for the safety data sheet, which carries handling and flash-point information for the material you are buying. Ask for IFRA documentation, the paperwork that addresses maximum use levels by product category — CSI supplies it on request via WhatsApp, and since no page in the range publishes a certificate number, amendment or category, do not accept a page badge in its place. Ask what pack sizes exist, and ask for GST invoicing if you need it.
Then do the part that is yours. Keep a 15 g retained sample of every scent you launch, sealed and dated, and blind-check each new bottle against it before it enters production, recording the wax, load, wick, jar and cure alongside every score. Over a year that archive is the only quality dataset describing your own product — worth more than any adjective on any supplier's page, ours included.
Finally, a note on where the money should go.
