Five Diwali Candle Fragrances That Can Become Bestsellers

One devotional, one warm gourmand, one luxury oud, one floral, one spiced. Five CSI oils that between them cover the entire Diwali buyer, with what each costs per candle, what to charge for it, and how to package all five as one collection.
₹3,795
all five at 100g · ≈31 candles of 200g · CSI live pricing, August 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which five? Sacred Sandal Ember (devotional, ₹799/100g), Tobacco Vanilla (warm gourmand, ₹799/100g), Spicy Cinnamon (spiced, ₹699/100g), Smoked Rose Royale (floral, ₹799/100g) and Royal Oud (luxury hero, ₹699/100g). All five at 100g: ₹3,795.

What does one 200g candle cost to make? ₹267.27 to ₹291.27 in materials at 500g fragrance pricing. Every candle carries the same ₹163.30 base — 184g wax, one wick, one jar — plus 16g of oil at ₹103.97 to ₹127.97.

What should I charge? Six tealights at ₹549, a 200g jar at ₹899, a 300g Royal Oud hero at ₹1,499. That holds materials at 30–34% of retail across all three tiers.

And the gift set? Three 200g candles plus box, filler, tissue and stickers cost ₹909.65 in materials. Sell at ₹2,699 — do not discount it below the sum of its parts.
The short answer
The pick: Sacred Sandal Ember, Tobacco Vanilla, Spicy Cinnamon, Smoked Rose Royale and Royal Oud — one per Diwali buyer type, ₹3,795 for all five at 100g.
The why: these five are chosen on cultural fit, gifting suitability, performance in soy and cost-per-candle headroom. They are a reasoned commercial judgement, not a measured sales ranking.
The next step: build three tiers on them — ₹549 tealight set, ₹899 core jar, ₹1,499 oud hero — and one ₹2,699 hamper. Order fragrance by early September to pour and cure before 8 November.

Five Diwali scents, ranked by how many buyers each one reaches 1 — Sacred Sandal Ember · devotional · ₹799/100g · the widest Diwali buyer 2 — Tobacco Vanilla · warm gourmand · ₹799/100g · the safe gift 3 — Spicy Cinnamon · spiced · ₹699/100g · carries the entry tier 4 — Smoked Rose Royale · floral · ₹799/100g · self-purchase 5 — Royal Oud · luxury hero · ₹699/100g · the margin
Bar width is breadth of buyer, not expected volume in your shop. The narrow bar at the bottom is not the weak pick — Royal Oud reaches the fewest people but carries the highest ticket, which is why the ladder ends there instead of starting there. A collection that is all top bars has no premium tier; a collection that is all bottom bars has no footfall.
Straight answer
Which five candle fragrances should a Diwali collection be built on?
Five, not ten, and one per buyer: Sacred Sandal Ember (₹799/100g) is the devotional anchor that reads correct in a pooja room and correct in a corporate hamper; Tobacco Vanilla (₹799/100g) is the warm gourmand that converts the buyer who has never bought a scented candle; Spicy Cinnamon (₹699/100g) is the spiced note that smells like the season itself and, at ₹6.50 a gram in 500g, carries your cheapest tier; Smoked Rose Royale (₹799/100g) is the floral with enough smoke behind it to avoid smelling like a room freshener; and Royal Oud (₹699/100g) is the hero that justifies a ₹1,499 shelf price. All five at 100g is ₹3,795 and roughly 31 candles of 200g at an 8% load; all five at 500g is ₹18,546 and roughly 156 candles. The claim here is not that these are proven bestsellers — nobody can tell you that about your shop. The claim is that these five have the cultural fit, the gifting logic, the soy performance and the cost headroom to become them. For the ten-oil shortlist and the week-by-week production calendar, read the Diwali collections guide.
One line: Sacred Sandal Ember, Tobacco Vanilla, Spicy Cinnamon, Smoked Rose Royale and Royal Oud — ₹3,795 at 100g, three price tiers from ₹549 to ₹1,499, and a ₹2,699 hamper.
Four of these five start at 100g — there is no 15g trial size, so your test batch is a 100g commitment. Only Spicy Cinnamon offers 15g (₹116) and 50g (₹349) if you want to sample before the season starts.

The five picks, defended

A Diwali collection is not five scents you like. It is five arguments about who is buying, and every scent that cannot answer "who buys this" is a scent that will still be on your shelf in December.

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with Lakshmi Puja in the Pradosh Kaal muhurat of 5:31 to 7:55 pm. That is roughly twelve weeks from now, which means fragrance needs to be decided and ordered by late August or early September to pour, cure and ship comfortably. What follows is the decision itself. Each pick is defended on what it smells like, why it fits Diwali specifically, who buys it, what 16g costs in a 200g candle, and what the finished candle should retail at.

1
Traditional / devotional · the anchor
Sacred Sandal Ember Fragrance Oil
What it smells like: creamy sandalwood with a dry, smoky ember underneath — the sandal note is the recognisable one, but the ember is what stops it reading like a generic sandalwood soap. It sits in the same register as agarbatti smoke without the ash.

Why it fits Diwali: no other family carries the same ritual permission. Sandalwood is the one scent an Indian household already associates with lighting something, which means a sandal candle needs no explanation on a product page and no apology in a pooja room. It is also the safest possible scent for a gift to someone whose taste you do not know — the failure mode of sandalwood is "pleasant", never "wrong".

Who buys it: the household buying for itself, the corporate gifting manager ordering 200 units who cannot risk offending anyone, and the wedding-favour buyer working the November–December season that overlaps Diwali. This is your volume pick and it should be the scent you hold most stock of.

The cost case: at 500g the oil is ₹8.00 per gram, so ₹127.97 of fragrance in a 200g candle and ₹291.27 in total materials. It is the one pick on this list where the jump to 1kg genuinely pays — ₹7.00 per gram, a 12.5% cut.

2
Warm gourmand · the safe gift
Tobacco Vanilla Fragrance Oil
What it smells like: vanilla with weight. The tobacco note is dried-leaf and slightly boozy rather than smoky, and it holds the vanilla down so the candle reads as a warm room in the evening instead of a bakery. It is the difference between "sweet" and "rich", and richness is what gets a candle bought as a present.

Why it fits Diwali: Diwali candles burn after dark, in rooms full of people, alongside food. A bright or fresh scent competes with the mithai; a heavy sweet gourmand cloys within an hour. A tobacco-vanilla sits exactly between those two failures. It also photographs well in copy — "warm", "amber", "evening" are the words gifting buyers search with.

Who buys it: the first-time candle buyer, who needs a scent name they can predict from the label, and the person buying three identical gifts in one go. This is your lowest-friction online sale of the five.

The cost case: ₹8.00 per gram at 500g, so ₹127.97 per 200g candle and ₹291.27 in materials. The 1kg tin drops it to ₹7.50 per gram. If your buyer base skews conservative and you want a plainer sweet note, Vanilla Bean at ₹790/100g is the straight substitute — but expect vanillin discolouration in white soy over several weeks.

1kg ₹7,499 ₹7.50 ≈62

Dark oils and pale wax. Tobacco Vanilla, Sacred Sandal Ember and Royal Oud are all deeply coloured oils, and at an 8% load they will tint soy wax anywhere from cream to light tan. This is cosmetic. Decide it deliberately: either lean into it with amber glass and black-and-gold jars that hide it entirely, or use a liquid dye to take the whole batch to one intentional colour. What you must not do is photograph a white candle in September and ship a beige one in November.
3
Spiced · the entry tier
Spicy Cinnamon Fragrance Oil
What it smells like: dry cinnamon bark with a peppery edge, not the sugary apple-pie cinnamon of a Western autumn range. It smells like a spice tin rather than a dessert, which is why it works in an Indian home where cinnamon is a cooking smell first.

Why it fits Diwali: spice is the note that makes a candle feel seasonal without being literal. It also solves a real merchandising problem — every collection needs one scent that is unmistakably festive at a glance, and "cinnamon" does that on a label in a way that "oud" does not. In a small vessel it is genuinely excellent, because spice notes project hard from a small melt pool where florals struggle.

Who buys it: the impulse buyer at a market stall or pop-up, the person adding a second item to reach free shipping, and anyone buying tealights. This is the scent that fills your entry tier and gets a customer into the collection at ₹549 rather than ₹899.

The cost case: the cheapest of the five at ₹6.50 per gram at 500g — ₹103.97 per 200g candle, ₹267.27 in total materials. It is also the only one of the five with 15g and 50g trial sizes, which makes it the natural scent to test a new vessel or a new load with.

Floral · self-purchase
Smoked Rose Royale Fragrance Oil
What it smells like: rose with an ember behind it. The rose is the deep, jammy kind rather than the thin dewy kind, and the smoke keeps it from turning soapy as the candle burns down. Think gulab under incense, not rose water.

Why it fits Diwali: rose is the flower of Indian celebration — it is in the garlands, the sweets and the rangoli — and a floral is the only way to reach the customer who finds sandalwood too traditional and oud too heavy. Most makers get this wrong by picking a light, pretty floral that vanishes in a warm November room. The smoke in this one is precisely what gives it enough body to survive a full evening's burn.

Who buys it: women buying for themselves, which is the single most underserved segment in Indian festive candle ranges. Almost every Diwali collection is built for gifting and forgets that a large share of festive candle spend is a woman buying one nice thing for her own house.

The cost case: ₹8.00 per gram at both 500g and 1kg, so ₹127.98 per 200g candle and ₹291.28 in materials — and no reason at all to buy the kilogram unless volume demands it. A cheaper rose route is British Rose at ₹342/100g, but it is a lighter, brighter rose and will not hold a room the same way.

5
Luxury oud · the hero
Royal Oud Fragrance Oil
What it smells like: resinous, dark and dry — woody oud with amber warmth rather than the medicinal, barnyard edge of raw agarwood. It is oud translated for a home rather than for a perfume bottle, which is exactly what a candle needs.

Why it fits Diwali: because somebody in your customer list is buying a gift for their boss. The premium tier of a festive collection is not a vanity exercise — it exists so that a buyer with a ₹1,500 budget does not have to buy two ₹899 candles and pretend it was deliberate. Oud is the fastest scent in the Indian market to signal expense, and it does it before the buyer has even smelled the candle.

Who buys it: corporate gifting, men buying for other men, and the customer who already owns a bakhoor burner. This pick reaches the fewest people of the five and earns the most per unit.

The cost case: the cheapest per gram of the five at 500g — ₹6.60 per gram, ₹105.60 in a 200g candle, ₹268.90 in materials. That is the whole argument for it as a hero: a 300g version costs ₹453.44 in materials and sells at ₹1,499. If you want a second oud for a two-tier premium range, Regal Royal Oud (₹699/100g) and White Royal Oud (₹810/100g) sit either side of it.

The CSI principle
Five scents that each answer a different question beat ten scents that all answer the same one.
Ten Diwali scents cost more to stock, more to photograph, more to label and far more to pack into hampers, and they usually collapse into three families anyway. Five picks, each with a named buyer, give you a range a customer can hold in their head — and a production run you can actually finish before 8 November.

What each costs per candle

Every 200g candle in this collection carries the same ₹163.30 base: 184g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999/10kg (₹0.60 a gram, so ₹110.20), one Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 at ₹590 per 100 (₹5.90), and one Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹236 per pack of 5 (₹47.20). The only variable is the 16g of fragrance.

Materials cost · 200g soy candle @ 8% load · 500g fragrance pricing
The five, poured and costed
Fragrance Oil (16g) Wax (184g) Wick Jar Total
Spicy Cinnamon ₹103.97 ₹110.20 ₹5.90 ₹47.20 ₹267.27
Royal Oud ₹105.60 ₹110.20 ₹5.90 ₹47.20 ₹268.90
Sacred Sandal Ember ₹127.97 ₹110.20 ₹5.90 ₹47.20 ₹291.27
Tobacco Vanilla ₹127.97 ₹110.20 ₹5.90 ₹47.20 ₹291.27
Smoked Rose Royale ₹127.98 ₹110.20 ₹5.90 ₹47.20 ₹291.28

The spread across the whole collection is ₹24.01 — roughly 8% between the cheapest and dearest candle. That is small enough to justify a single shelf price for all five 200g candles, which is a merchandising decision worth taking deliberately. One price makes five candles read as a collection; five prices make them read as five unrelated products, and the customer starts comparing rather than choosing.

Order sizing · 100g, 500g and 1kg
Which of the five actually reward buying the kilogram
Fragrance 100g 500g 1kg 500g → 1kg saving

Royal Oud ₹699 ₹3,300 ₹6,400 ₹6.60 → ₹6.40 · 3.0%
Spicy Cinnamon ₹699 ₹3,249 ₹6,499 ₹6.50 → ₹6.50 · none

All five ₹3,795 ₹18,546 ₹35,396 ≈31 / ≈156 / ≈312 candles
The sizing rule for this collection
Buy Sacred Sandal Ember at 1kg — it is your volume scent and it is the only one with a double-digit saving. Buy the other four at 500g. Two of them cost exactly the same per gram at 1kg, so the larger tin buys you nothing but tied-up capital and a shelf full of oil in January.

The three-tier pricing ladder

A Diwali range needs three price points because it serves three budgets: the ₹500 add-on, the ₹900 gift, and the ₹1,500 statement. Building all three from the same five oils costs you almost nothing extra in fragrance and multiplies what a single customer can spend. Materials are held at 30–34% of retail across every tier, which is the working rule for a small Indian candle brand once labour, packaging, courier, gateway fees and breakage are accounted for.

1
Entry — six tealights, ₹549Six aluminium tealight cups at ₹6.49 each (₹649 per 100) is ₹38.94; roughly 14g of fill each means 77.28g of wax at ₹46.37; six wicks at ₹35.40; and 6.72g of Spicy Cinnamon at 500g pricing is ₹43.67. Add a 11 × 11 × 8 cm corrugated box at ₹22.42 and materials come to ₹186.80. At ₹549 that is 34% materials. This tier exists to be added to a basket, not to be searched for.
2
Core — 200g jar candle, ₹899All five scents, one price. Materials run ₹267.27 to ₹291.28, which is 30–32% of ₹899. This is where the collection lives: it is the tier that gets photographed, the tier that goes into hampers, and the tier a repeat customer works through scent by scent. Resist the urge to price the oud higher here — the 300g format is where oud earns its premium, not the 200g.
3
Premium — 300g Royal Oud hero, ₹1,499276g of wax at ₹165.60, a 300g borosilicate jar with golden lid at ₹120, one Eco Wick Thick C2 at ₹9.44 (₹944 per 100), and 24g of Royal Oud at ₹158.40. Materials ₹453.44, which is 30% of ₹1,499. Make this scent-exclusive: the 300g format should only ever be Royal Oud, because exclusivity is what makes a hero a hero.
4
The ladder in one line₹549 → ₹899 → ₹1,499. Each step is roughly 1.65× the one below it, which is close enough to feel like a real choice and far enough apart that nobody agonises. A ladder with steps closer than 1.4× produces hesitation; a ladder with a gap wider than 2× produces a hole in the middle of your revenue.
The mistake is pricing the tiers by cost, not by role. Spicy Cinnamon costs ₹24 less to pour than Sacred Sandal Ember, and it is tempting to sell it for ₹849 and the sandal for ₹899. Do not. The ₹50 gains you almost nothing and it costs you the single most valuable thing a small collection has — the ability for a customer to pick a scent without doing arithmetic. Vary price by format, never by scent inside a format.

Naming and packaging the five as one collection

Five candles become a collection through three things: a shared naming grammar, a shared vessel, and a single differentiator. Get those right and a customer who buys one candle understands immediately that there are four more. Get them wrong and you have five products that happen to have launched in the same month.

Naming grammar. Pick one structure and hold it across all five. The commonest workable pattern for an Indian festive range is a two-word name where the first word is sensory and the second is the note — so a sandalwood candle, a rose candle and an oud candle all read as siblings rather than as a supplier's product list. What you must avoid is mixing registers: one Hindi name, one English name and one French-sounding name in the same five will read as three collections. Whatever you choose, the scent description underneath should always name the actual notes, because that is what a gifting buyer scans for.

One vessel, one differentiator. Use the same jar for all five 200g candles and let the label carry the difference. Amber Shiny Glass with a black lid at ₹47.20 each hides the tinting that dark oils cause and reads warm under diya light; Red Shiny Glass with a golden lid at ₹50 and Black Shiny with golden lid at ₹236 per pack of 5 are the more overtly festive options. Then break the pattern exactly once, for the 300g Royal Oud hero, which gets the borosilicate jar with golden lid at ₹120. One deliberate break makes the hero legible on a shelf; two breaks make the range look accidental.

Five scents across three formats is fifteen SKUs, and fifteen SKUs of a seasonal range is how a small maker ends up with unsold stock in January. Restrict tealights to two scents and the 300g to one. Nine SKUs is a collection; fifteen is an inventory problem wearing a collection's clothes.

The hamper maths

The hamper is where a Diwali collection makes its money, because it converts one transaction into three candles. It is also where most makers quietly destroy their margin, by treating the box, filler and tissue as free and then discounting the set below the sum of its parts. Here is the actual arithmetic for a three-candle gift set built from Sacred Sandal Ember, Spicy Cinnamon and Royal Oud — one devotional, one spiced, one luxury, which is the most defensible trio for a gift.

Three-candle Diwali hamper · full materials cost

Paper tape 50m at ₹236 ₹4.00
Total materials Candles ₹827.44 + packaging ₹82.21 ₹909.65

Price it at ₹2,699. That is 33.7% materials, identical to the margin structure of the single candles, and it is the same as three individual candles at ₹899. The instinct to knock it down to ₹2,499 as a "gift set saving" costs you ₹200 a box and pushes materials to 36.4% — and it does so for a customer who is not price-shopping. A Diwali hamper buyer is solving a social obligation under time pressure. What they want is for the box to look worth what they paid, and packaging is what makes it look that way, which is exactly the line the discount comes out of.

For the premium hamper, swap one 200g for the 300g Royal Oud hero: ₹453.44 plus two 200g candles at ₹291.27 each is ₹1,035.98, plus the same ₹82.21 of packaging, for ₹1,118.18 in materials. Price it at ₹3,499 — 32% materials, and a genuinely different object from the ₹2,699 box rather than the same box with a sticker on it. Everything above lives in the packaging materials range; jars are in glass jars for candle making.

A hamper is not three candles in a box. It is a box that happens to contain three candles, and the buyer is paying for the box.

Wax, fragrance load and cure

All five of these oils are heavy enough to carry well in soy at an 8% load, which is what every cost figure on this page assumes. The wax you choose sets your ceiling, and the ceiling is not a target — going over it does not produce a stronger candle, it produces an oily one that sweats and burns unpredictably in a room full of people.

Wax compatibility
Which wax for which part of the collection
Wax Best for in this collection Load From
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks The default for all three tiers; the headroom lets you push Spicy Cinnamon and Smoked Rose Royale harder than 8% Up to 13% ₹299 / 500g
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (flakes) Clear or pale glass where frosting would show; melt and pour 80–90°C, 60-month shelf life Up to 10% ₹260 / 500g
Eco Soy CSI 400 First-time makers and small tealight runs; one-pour, no additives, fragrance in at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring Standard ₹399 / 1kg
Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 The 300g Royal Oud hero, where a smoother top and fuller throw justify the higher wax cost Standard ₹325 / 500g
Soy Pillar Wax Moulded diya-shaped or sculptural pieces sold alongside the jars Standard ₹300 / 500g
Cure is the line item nobody budgets for. These are heavy oils — resinous oud, dried-leaf tobacco, smoked rose — and heavy oils improve over a longer cure. Give them 14 days minimum and up to 21, lids on, in a closed box away from sunlight, before you judge hot throw or ship anything. Working back from 8 November, a candle poured in the last week of October has not cured. If your throw disappoints, check the cure, the load and the wick before you blame the oil — the weak throw diagnosis guide works through it in order.

Wick to the jar diameter, not to the scent. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹590 per 100) suit the 200g amber jar; Thick C2 (₹944 per 100) suit the wider 300g borosilicate. An undersized wick will make all five of these read as weak, and it is the single most misdiagnosed fault in festive production, because the candles that get rushed are the ones that get under-wicked. Browse the full wick range if you are working with a vessel not listed here.

Why trust this guide

"Can become bestsellers" is a prediction, not a measurement. We are not claiming these five are bestsellers, and we are not quoting sales figures for them — CSI supplies raw materials and does not have visibility into what your finished candles do on your shelf. What is on this page is a reasoned commercial judgement, made on five stated criteria: cultural fit with Diwali specifically, breadth of buyer so that the five do not compete with each other, gifting suitability including corporate and hamper use, performance in soy at a realistic 8% load, and cost-per-candle headroom against a workable retail price. Any figure in this guide you can check; the picks themselves are an argument, and you are entitled to disagree with them.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We stock oils from ₹300 to over ₹24,000 per kilogram, so there is no commercial reason to steer you toward the expensive end. Three of these five are among the more affordable premium oils in the range, and the luxury hero is the cheapest of the five per gram at 500g.

Every price, size and link here is live CSI stock in August 2026, and links go to the product page where current pricing always takes precedence. Cost-per-candle and hamper figures are calculated, not estimated, with every input named so you can rerun the arithmetic against your own jars and packaging. Frequently asked questions

Which five candle fragrances should a Diwali collection be built on?
One per buyer type, so nothing overlaps: Sacred Sandal Ember (devotional, ₹799/100g), Tobacco Vanilla (warm gourmand, ₹799/100g), Spicy Cinnamon (spiced, ₹699/100g), Smoked Rose Royale (floral, ₹799/100g) and Royal Oud (luxury hero, ₹699/100g). All five at 100g costs ₹3,795 and yields roughly 31 candles of 200g at an 8% fragrance load. These are reasoned commercial picks based on cultural fit, gifting suitability and cost headroom, not a measured sales ranking.
What does a 200g Diwali soy candle cost to make?
Between ₹267.27 and ₹291.27 in materials for these five at 500g fragrance pricing. Every candle carries the same ₹163.30 base — 184g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹110.20, one Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 at ₹5.90 and an Amber Shiny Glass Jar at ₹47.20 — and then 16g of oil, which runs from ₹103.97 for Spicy Cinnamon to ₹127.97 for Sacred Sandal Ember, Smoked Rose Royale and Tobacco Vanilla.
What should I price a Diwali candle at?
Work backwards from materials at 30–35% of retail. A set of six tealights costing about ₹186.80 in materials sits at ₹549. A 200g jar candle costing ₹267 to ₹291 sits at ₹899. A 300g Royal Oud hero costing ₹453.44 sits at ₹1,499. Pricing every 200g candle in the collection at one number is deliberate — a single shelf price makes a five-scent range read as one collection rather than five separate products.
What should a three-candle Diwali gift set cost to make and sell for?
Three 200g candles — Sacred Sandal Ember, Spicy Cinnamon and Royal Oud — cost ₹827.44 in candle materials. Add roughly ₹82.21 of packaging: a 7 × 5 × 4 inch corrugated box at ₹26.72, crinkle paper filler at about ₹36, two sheets of tissue at ₹13, three candle care stickers at ₹2.49 and about ₹4 of paper tape. Total materials ₹909.65. Priced at ₹2,699 that is 33.7% materials, which holds the same margin as the single candles.
Should I buy 100g, 500g or 1kg of these five for Diwali?
Only two of the five reward the jump to 1kg. Sacred Sandal Ember falls from ₹8.00 per gram at 500g to ₹7.00 at 1kg, a 12.5% saving, and Tobacco Vanilla falls from ₹8.00 to ₹7.50. Smoked Rose Royale and Spicy Cinnamon cost the same per gram at 500g and 1kg, so there is no price reason to hold the larger tin, and Royal Oud saves only about 3%. Buy 100g to test, 500g to run a season, and 1kg only where the per-gram price actually drops or the order is already confirmed.
Which wax and fragrance load suit these five Diwali fragrances?
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are the default for jar candles and are rated to a 13% fragrance load, which gives headroom to push the spiced and floral picks harder. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 flakes are rated to 10%, melt and pour at 80–90°C and frost less, which suits clear glass. Eco Soy CSI 400 is the beginner one-pour option with fragrance added at 80–90°C and two minutes of stirring. All five oils are heavy enough to carry well in soy at 8%, but cure 14 to 21 days before judging hot throw.
