Commercial Fragrance · Small-Batch Makers
Small-batch makers pour ten, twenty-five or fifty candles at a time. That is the unit to buy fragrance for. This page turns each batch into grams of oil, then into the cheapest combination of listed packs that covers it, then into a material cost per candle.
₹285.57
material cost per 200 g candle in a 25-candle batch of Sandalwood, including oil, wax, wick and jar · excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil does a batch of 10 candles need? At 8% in 200 g candles, 160 g, or 168 g with a 5% allowance for pour loss. For 100 g candles, 80 g (84 g with allowance). See batch sizes in grams.

Which pack size suits a 25-candle batch? 25 × 200 g candles need 420 g with allowance. That is four or five 100 g bottles, or one 500 g where the 500 g is cheaper per gram, as it is for Mango Coconut (₹1,982.00, against ₹2,186.44 for the cheapest mix of 100 g and 15 g bottles).

What does a small batch cost per candle? With Sandalwood in a 200 g White Matte Glass Jar: ₹292.55 a candle in a batch of 10, ₹285.57 in 25 and ₹282.36 in 50. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra.

Do I need a supplier with a minimum order for batch work? No. CSI's listed store states no minimum order, so you can buy exactly the packs one batch needs. Candle Fragrance Oil Supplier With Low MOQ in India explains how the smallest size works as a minimum.
The short answer
Oil per batch: 200 g candles at 8% + 5%: 10 → 168 g · 25 → 420 g · 50 → 840 g. 100 g candles: 84 g · 210 g · 420 g.
Packs that fit: Sandalwood: 10 × 200 g → 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g (₹960.52) · 25 → 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g (₹2,197.16) · 50 → 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 50 g (₹4,292.84).
Per candle: Oil, wax, wick, jar: ₹292.55 (10) · ₹285.57 (25) · ₹282.36 (50). How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 100 Candles? covers 100-candle runs.
Batch size → grams of oil → the packs that fit (200 g candles, 8% load, 5% allowance) 10 candles 25 candles 50 candles 168 g of oil 420 g of oil 840 g of oil 2 × 100 g, or an exact fit of 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g 4–5 × 100 g, or one 500 g where the 500 g carries a break 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 50 g, or one 1 kg for the next batch too wax ≈ 1.93 kg wax ≈ 4.83 kg wax ≈ 9.66 kg Dark block = 500 g · mid blocks = 100 g · small = 50 g. Pack fit varies by oil: check which sizes are in stock and which carry a break.
A batch is a fixed quantity of oil, and listed packs come in fixed sizes. The skill is in the fit: buy the combination that covers the batch with the least money and the least left over. For flat-priced oils that usually means 100 g bottles; for oils with a break at 500 g or 1 kg, the larger pack can cover a 25- or 50-candle batch for less.
Straight answer
What pack sizes should a small-batch candle maker buy fragrance oil in?
Buy for the batch, not for the bottle. At an 8% load, a 200 g candle holds 16 g of oil, so a batch of 10 candles needs 168 g with a 5% allowance, 25 needs 420 g and 50 needs 840 g. Because CSI's listed store states no minimum order and sells most oils in 15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg, you can cover each batch closely. For a flat-priced oil like Sandalwood, 10 candles fit 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g for ₹960.52, or two 100 g bottles for ₹1,005.36 if you prefer fewer bottles. For an oil with a break at 500 g, like Mango Coconut, a 25-candle batch is cheapest as one 500 g at ₹1,982.00. Add wax, wick and jar, and a Sandalwood candle costs ₹292.55 in materials in a batch of ten and ₹282.36 in a batch of fifty; the oil price per gram barely changes, so most of that fall comes from dropping the 15 g top-ups. Pick the batch you actually pour, find the fit for each oil, and let reorders follow your batch rhythm.
One line: grams per batch first, pack fit second, and check each oil's ladder for a 500 g or 1 kg break.
A batch of ten 200 g candles needs 168 g of oil. For Sandalwood the cheapest fit is 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g for ₹960.52 (180 g), or two 100 g bottles for ₹1,005.36 if you would rather open fewer bottles.

Batch sizes in grams

A small-batch maker's unit is the pour, not the product. Everything you buy should divide cleanly into it.

Small-batch candle making has a natural rhythm. A kitchen or a small workshop can melt, pour and cool ten to fifty candles in a session, depending on jar size and equipment. Buying fragrance by the batch means working out exactly how many grams one batch takes and then buying the listed packs that cover it. The maths starts with the load: at 8%, a candle of total weight W holds W × 0.08 grams of oil. That is inside the stated maximums of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (up to 13%) and CSI 464 (up to 10%), which are the wax makers' formulation limits, not regulatory ones.

Then add an allowance. Oil clings to the pouring jug and the stirring stick, and you will want a spare candle or two for test burns. Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns; this page uses the top of that range, 5%, as a working assumption. The lead table shows every batch in grams and the cheapest way to cover it with Sandalwood, an oil priced almost flat from 100 g to 1 kg.

Sandalwood · 8% load + 5% allowance · in-stock sizes only · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Each batch in grams, and the packs that cover it
Batch Oil at 8% With 5% allowance Cheapest exact fit Cost Round up in 100 g Cost
10 × 100 g 80 g 84 g 100 g (100 g) ₹502.68 100 g ₹502.68
10 × 200 g 160 g 168 g 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g (180 g) ₹960.52 2 × 100 g ₹1,005.36
25 × 100 g 200 g 210 g 2 × 100 g + 15 g (215 g) ₹1,098.58 3 × 100 g ₹1,508.04
25 × 200 g 400 g 420 g 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g (430 g) ₹2,197.16 5 × 100 g ₹2,513.40
50 × 100 g 400 g 420 g 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g (430 g) ₹2,197.16 5 × 100 g ₹2,513.40
50 × 200 g 800 g 840 g 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 50 g (850 g) ₹4,292.84 9 × 100 g ₹4,524.12

Two patterns stand out. For the smallest batches, the cheapest fit often mixes a 15 g or 50 g with a 100 g. The saving over rounding up to whole 100 g bottles is real but modest, and it comes at the cost of more bottles to track. For the 50-candle batch of 200 g candles, the 500 g appears, because it covers half the batch in one bottle at the same per-gram rate as the 100 g. Sandalwood's 1 kg is also ₹5.03 a gram, so the kilo would cover this batch and most of the next with no price penalty.

Weigh the allowance, do not guess it
Pour one batch, weigh the oil left in the bottle, and compare it with what the maths said you would use. After two or three batches you will know your own pour loss. If it is 2%, cut the allowance and buy less. If it is 7%, look at your jug and your technique before you buy more oil.

The packs that fit each batch

Pack fit is where small-batch makers quietly lose money. Buy too little and you top up with 15 g testers, which carry a median 23.1% premium per gram. Buy too much and the remainder sits on the shelf, tying up cash until the next batch of that scent. The right fit depends on each oil's price ladder. Here are three oils with three different ladders, at the three batch sizes, for 200 g candles:

200 g candles · 8% load + 5% allowance · cheapest combination of in-stock sizes · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Same batches, three oils, three different best fits
Oil 10 candles (168 g) 25 candles (420 g) 50 candles (840 g)
Sandalwood (flat from 100 g) 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g · ₹960.52 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g · ₹2,197.16 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 50 g · ₹4,292.84
Mango Coconut (break at 500 g) 100 g + 50 g + 2 × 15 g · ₹936.44 500 g · ₹1,982.00 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 50 g · ₹3,732.00
Fresh Strawberries (steep 15 g premium) 2 × 100 g · ₹755.20 4 × 100 g + 50 g · ₹1,722.80 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 50 g · ₹3,115.20

Mango Coconut shows the value of reading the ladder. Its 500 g costs ₹1,982.00, or ₹3.96 a gram, against ₹5.00 at 100 g. For the 25-candle batch, one 500 g bottle is cheaper than any combination of smaller packs, and it leaves 80 g over for the next batch. Fresh Strawberries shows the opposite trap. Its 15 g costs ₹7.55 a gram, exactly double the ₹3.78 of its 100 g, so the optimiser avoids 15 g top-ups almost entirely and prefers two 100 g bottles for a batch of ten, even though that means 32 g left over.

The top-up habit. A maker buys one 100 g bottle for a ten-candle batch, runs 68 g short, and tops up with five 15 g testers. For Fresh Strawberries, that top-up costs ₹566.40 for 75 g, against ₹377.60 for a second 100 g bottle. Topping up with testers is the most expensive way to finish a batch. If a batch needs more than one bottle's worth, buy the next full size.

For 100 g candles, votives and tins, every figure halves: 84 g for ten, 210 g for twenty-five and 420 g for fifty. A single 100 g bottle covers a ten-candle batch of 100 g candles with 16 g to spare, which makes 100 g the natural pack for makers of small formats. How Much Fragrance Oil Do I Need for 100 Candles? takes the same maths up to a 100-candle run.

What each batch costs per candle

Batch size changes your cost per candle less than you might hope, and for different reasons than you might think.

Here is the full material cost of a Sandalwood batch in each size: oil at the cheapest fit, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 184 g per candle plus 5%, Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 at ₹5.90 each, and White Matte Glass Jars at ₹70.80 each (packs of five, ₹354.00).

The per-candle cost falls from ₹292.55 to ₹282.36, a difference of ₹10.20. Almost none of that is a bulk discount. Wax is priced flat per kilo (₹599.00 for 1 kg, ₹2,995.00 for 5 kg), wicks cost ₹5.90 each in every pack, and jars ₹70.80 each. The saving comes from pack fit: the ten-candle batch buys 180 g of oil for 168 g of need and pays tester prices for 30 g of it, while the fifty-candle batch wastes only 10 g and uses no testers. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST, which you add in your own costing.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The obvious sales line would be "bigger batches, bigger packs, lower cost". On our own prices the per-candle saving from ten to fifty candles is ₹10.20, and it comes from fitting packs to the batch, not from any volume discount. Our 10 kg wax bag is actually ₹9.00 dearer than two 5 kg bags. Pour the batch size you can sell, and buy the packs that fit it.
The CSI principle
Fit the pack to the pour.
For small-batch makers the lowest cost per candle comes from buying the combination of packs that covers one batch with the least left over, not from buying the biggest pack. Where an oil's 500 g or 1 kg carries a real per-gram break, the fit and the discount point the same way. Where it does not, the fit wins.

Why the right pack depends on the oil

Each oil at CSI has its own price ladder, and batch buying works best when you know which of three shapes it follows. These three picks show one of each.

Most oils in the catalogue follow the first shape: a step at 15 g, then flat. Twenty-four oils show a saving of 5% or more at 1 kg, and some, like Mango Coconut, Citronella and Honeydew Melon, show it already at 500 g. Before you plan a batch, open the product page, note the per-gram price at each size, and let that decide whether a 500 g beats a stack of 100 g bottles. Wholesale Fragrance Oils With Low Minimum Order Quantity lists the oils with the biggest breaks.

Buying for a batch rhythm

One batch is a purchase. A batch every fortnight is a supply plan.

Once you pour on a regular rhythm, buy each oil to cover a few batches rather than one. The walkthrough below turns a batch habit into an order plan without ever buying more than you can pour in a month or two.

1
Fix your batch size per scentDecide how many candles of each scent one pour produces. A hero scent may be 25 candles; a seasonal one, 10. Write it down per oil.
2
Convert to grams with your real allowanceCandle weight × load × batch size, plus your measured pour loss. Start at 5% until you have measured your own.
3
Decide how many batches one order should coverTwo to four batches is a sensible range for most small makers: enough to avoid constant reordering, not so much that oil sits for months. How Much Fragrance Oil Inventory Should a Candle Manufacturer Keep? covers inventory levels in more depth.
4
Find the cheapest fit for that totalPrice the combination of listed sizes that covers it. For flat oils, whole 100 g bottles or a kilo. For oils with a break, the 500 g or 1 kg.
5
Buy wax, wicks and jars in batch multiplesJars come in fives, wicks in tens, wax in 500 g, 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg bags. Round each up to your batch count so nothing runs out mid-pour.
6
Reorder at the start of the last batchWhen you open the bottle for the last batch an order covers, place the next order. That keeps one batch of buffer against delivery time without holding extra stock.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page could have argued that bigger batches and bigger packs always lower your cost. Our own prices show the saving from ten to fifty candles is small and comes mostly from pack fit, and that our 10 kg wax bag costs slightly more than two 5 kg bags. We say so.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Pack fits are computed as the cheapest combination of in-stock listed sizes whose total weight covers the batch; per-candle costs are batch totals divided by candle count. All figures are arithmetic on listed prices.

The 8% load, the 200 g candle and the 5% allowance are working assumptions for comparison, not a recipe. Your own pour loss, jar and wax decide your real figures. For current stock, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil do I need for 10 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%, 160 g, or 168 g with a 5% allowance. For 100 g candles, 80 g (84 g with allowance). One 100 g bottle covers ten 100 g candles; ten 200 g candles need just under two.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 25 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%, 400 g, or 420 g with a 5% allowance. That is four or five 100 g bottles, or one 500 g where the 500 g is cheaper per gram, as it is for Mango Coconut, Citronella and Honeydew Melon.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 50 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%, 800 g, or 840 g with allowance. Depending on the oil, the cheapest fit is a 500 g with three 100 g and a 50 g, or a 1 kg that also starts your next batch.
Is it cheaper to make candles in bigger batches?
Slightly. With Sandalwood in 200 g jars, material cost falls from ₹292.55 a candle at 10 to ₹282.36 at 50. Most of that is better pack fit, not bulk pricing, since wax, wicks and jars are priced flat per unit.
What size fragrance oil bottle should a small-batch candle maker buy?
Usually 100 g for flat-priced oils and 500 g or 1 kg for oils with a per-gram break. Avoid finishing batches with 15 g testers, which cost a median 23.1% more per gram than 100 g.
How much extra fragrance oil should I buy for wastage?
Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns as a starting assumption. Measure your actual loss over two or three batches and adjust.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Oil per candle = candle weight × 8% load (16 g in a 200 g candle, 8 g in a 100 g candle); wax per candle = candle weight − oil (184 g). A 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns is applied to oil and wax as a working assumption within the 3–5% range. Pack fits are the cheapest combination of in-stock listed sizes covering the requirement. Per-candle material cost covers oil, wax, wick and jar and excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. The 15 g per-gram premium (median 23.1%) and the 24 oils with a 1 kg saving of 5% or more are arithmetic on listed prices. Load ceilings (13% Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
