Vanilla oil scorecard
Two vanillas can smell equally good in the bottle and part ways by month two. Score them on five measures, in matched candles, with the weights set before you smell anything.
5 measures
fresh smell, aged smell, cold throw, hot throw and wax compatibility — weighted before testing
Quick answers — read this first
Which measures matter most? Set weights before testing. A suggested starting split: aged smell and hot throw 25 each, wax compatibility 20, fresh smell and cold throw 15 each.

Is price a tie-breaker between Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean? No. Both are ₹7,646.00 per kg and ₹790.00 per 100 g, so oil cost per 16 g candle is ₹122.34 either way.

Will either vanilla discolour wax? Both pages flag it: Dark Vanilla says it will yellow white or light wax; Vanilla Bean lists 2.5% vanillin and potential discolouration.

How many candles per oil? Five 200 g candles at 8% use 80 g, leaving 20 g for a fresh reference candle at the aged check.
The short answer
Method: Matched candles, coded bases, fixed check days and a weighted scorecard agreed in advance.
CSI options: Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean (₹790.00 per 100 g); Cinnamon Vanilla ₹483.80 per 100 g as a spiced alternative.
Rule: Hot throw and aged smell decide; bottle smell only qualifies an oil for testing.

Straight answer
How Do I Compare Two Vanilla Fragrance Oils Using Fresh Smell, Aged Smell, Cold Throw, Hot Throw and Wax Compatibility?
Pour matched candles of both oils — same wax, jar, wick, load and day — and score them on a weighted scorecard you set before testing. A suggested split is fresh smell 15, aged smell 25, cold throw 15, hot throw 25 and wax compatibility 20. Check fresh after the page's stated 48–72 h soy cure, then age lidded candles in your storage and compare them at a suggested day 60 against a freshly poured reference of the same oil. With CSI's Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean, price is level at ₹7,646.00 per kg, so the scorecard alone decides. Both pages flag vanillin colour change, so judge colour against an unscented control.
One line: five measures, weights fixed in advance, matched candles and a fresh reference at the aged check.
Vanilla Bean fragrance oil — 100 g ₹790.00; flashpoint 203°C and 2.5% vanillin per its page, which also recommends wick testing per container and wax.

Why five measures, and why fix the weights first

If you choose the weights after smelling the candles, you have already chosen the oil.

Vanilla is one of the hardest families to compare by bottle. Two oils that both read "creamy vanilla" on a blotter can behave very differently once they are in wax: one throws well when burned and the other mostly in the jar, one holds its warmth after weeks on the shelf and the other turns flat, one keeps your wax pale for longer and the other warms it quickly.

That is why a fair comparison needs five separate measures, not one overall impression. And because everyone has a favourite before testing starts, the weights must be written down first. A suggested starting split, which you can change to suit your product:

Scorecard weights
Fix these before pouring Measure | Suggested weight | Why it carries that weight Fresh smell (cold, after cure) | 15 | First impression in the shop, but only part of the story Aged smell (after storage) | 25 | What a customer actually opens if stock waits Cold throw strength | 15 | Sells the candle unlit Hot throw (burned) | 25 | What the customer paid for Wax compatibility | 20 | Colour, surface, seepage and wick behaviour
Measure Suggested weight Why it carries that weight
Fresh smell (cold, after cure) 15 First impression in the shop, but only part of the story
Aged smell (after storage) 25 What a customer actually opens if stock waits
Cold throw strength 15 Sells the candle unlit
Hot throw (burned) 25 What the customer paid for
Wax compatibility 20 Colour, surface, seepage and wick behaviour

If you sell mostly in shops where candles are smelled unlit, you might raise cold throw. If your candles sell within a fortnight of pouring, aged smell matters less. The point is to decide on paper, not on the day.

The CSI vanilla options

Price will not break the tie between CSI's two main vanillas. Dark Vanilla and Vanilla Bean are both ₹790.00 per 100 g and ₹7,646.00 per kg. At 16 g per 200 g candle, oil cost is 16 × ₹7.646 = ₹122.34 for either.

The product pages describe them differently, and those details tell you what to watch:

Page facts
What each vanilla page states Oil | Notes (page) | Flashpoint | Vanillin and colour (page) | 100 g Dark Vanilla | Rich vanilla and spice; caramel and cream; dark amber and musk | Approx. 191–193°C | Present, % not published; will yellow white or light wax, page says performance unaffected | ₹790.00 Vanilla Bean | Vanilla; strength "moderate to strong" per page | 203°C | 2.5%; potential discolouration, test with lighter waxes | ₹790.00 Cinnamon Vanilla | Cinnamon and clove; vanilla bean and sugar; cream and butter | 132°C | 2.5%; moderate discolouration risk in light wax | ₹483.80
Oil Notes (page) Flashpoint Vanillin and colour (page) 100 g
Dark Vanilla Rich vanilla and spice; caramel and cream; dark amber and musk Approx. 191–193°C Present, % not published; will yellow white or light wax, page says performance unaffected ₹790.00
Vanilla Bean Vanilla; strength "moderate to strong" per page 203°C 2.5%; potential discolouration, test with lighter waxes ₹790.00
Cinnamon Vanilla Cinnamon and clove; vanilla bean and sugar; cream and butter 132°C 2.5%; moderate discolouration risk in light wax ₹483.80

Cinnamon Vanilla is a different scent, not a like-for-like vanilla, but it is worth including if a spiced profile would suit your range. Add every oil below its published flashpoint.

The matched test plan

Buy both 100 g samples: 2 × ₹790.00 = ₹1,580.00. Hold everything else constant.

1
Pick one recipeOne wax lot, your real jar, one wick, 8% of total candle weight: 184 g wax plus 16 g oil in a 200 g candle.
2
Pour five per oilFive candles use 5 × 16 g = 80 g, leaving 20 g sealed, cool and dark for a fresh reference later.
3
Pour two unscented controlsSame wax, same jar. They are your colour baseline and your check on wax odour.
4
Code everythingNumber the bases; keep the key in a notebook, not on the jar.
5
CureThe Dark Vanilla page gives 48–72 h in soy before burn testing. Use the same cure for both, then check fresh.
6
Age the rest liddedThree candles per oil go on the shelf where stock really waits, with one control beside them.

Scoring each measure

Fresh and aged smell

Smell lid-off after the same waiting time — say two minutes, a suggested starting point — in the same room, with a second person if possible. Score 1–5. At the aged check (a suggested day 60), pour one fresh candle from each oil's reserved 20 g a few days ahead, cure it the same way, and smell aged against fresh. The aged score is about how close it stays to the fresh one, not how strong it is.

Vanilla changes tend to show as flattening: the creamy, lifted top recedes and the darker base dominates. That is general fragrance behaviour, not CSI data, and it is exactly what the aged-versus-fresh comparison catches.

Cold throw and hot throw

Score them separately. Cold throw is the unlit jar; hot throw is the room after a set burn time in a closed room of fixed size. A strong cold throw does not predict a strong hot throw. Burn one candle of each oil at the same time in separate, similar rooms, and never leave a burn unattended.

Wax compatibility

This measure is about faults, not smell. Check colour against the unscented control on day 3 and at the aged check; check the surface for seepage or frosting; and check the wick: melt pool, flame steadiness, soot and carbon build-up. Vanilla Bean's page recommends wick testing per container and wax. If one oil needs a different wick, note it — it is extra testing cost if you choose that oil.

Common mistake. Scoring colour against memory. Fix: always hold the scented candle next to the unscented control from the same wax lot. "Warmer than the control" is a measurement; "looks a bit yellow" is not.

The scorecard

Vanilla scorecard
Score 1–5, multiply by weight Measure | Weight | Dark Vanilla score | Vanilla Bean score | Note Fresh smell | 15 | your score | your score | Lid-off, coded Aged smell (vs fresh reference) | 25 | your score | your score | Suggested day 60 Cold throw | 15 | your score | your score | Same room and wait Hot throw | 25 | your score | your score | Same burn time and room Wax compatibility | 20 | your score | your score | Colour vs control, surface, wick Weighted total | 100 | sum of score × weight | sum of score × weight | Highest total wins
Measure Weight Dark Vanilla score Vanilla Bean score Note
Fresh smell 15 your score your score Lid-off, coded
Aged smell (vs fresh reference) 25 your score your score Suggested day 60
Cold throw 15 your score your score Same room and wait
Hot throw 25 your score your score Same burn time and room
Wax compatibility 20 your score your score Colour vs control, surface, wick
Weighted total 100 sum of score × weight sum of score × weight Highest total wins

Weighted total = (score × weight) for each row, added up; a perfect oil scores 500. If the totals are within a few points, treat it as a tie and decide on the measure you weighted most.

From scorecard to purchase

Once a winner emerges, do not jump straight to several kilograms. CSI publishes no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data for any oil; your aged check is the evidence you have. Order no more than you will use within the period you tested, and ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and any written storage guidance for the lot you will receive.

Keep the reserved bottle and two aged candles from the winning oil as retained references. When the bulk arrives, smell it against them before you pour production. And because both vanillas carry a page warning about colour, decide now whether you will use a darker jar or tinted wax, or tell customers plainly that vanilla candles warm in colour over time — never promise they stay white.

Argue against interest
Bottle smell earns an oil a place in the test; it does not win the test.
Weights fixed before smelling protect you from choosing your favourite and calling it data. When the price is level, the scorecard is the only honest tie-breaker.
If you choose the weights after smelling the candles, you have already chosen the oil.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two vanilla fragrance oils for candles?
Pour matched candles of both in the same wax, jar, wick and load, code them, and score fresh smell, aged smell, cold throw, hot throw and wax compatibility on a weighted scorecard fixed before testing. Compare aged candles against freshly poured references.
Is Dark Vanilla or Vanilla Bean better for candles?
CSI publishes no comparison or ageing data, and both cost ₹7,646.00 per kg. The pages differ: Dark Vanilla lists caramel, cream and dark amber with an approximate 191–193°C flashpoint; Vanilla Bean lists 2.5% vanillin and a 203°C flashpoint. Your own scorecard decides.
Why do vanilla candles turn yellow or brown?
Vanillin is known to discolour wax, and both CSI vanilla pages warn about it. Compare each candle with an unscented control from the same wax to see how much change the oil causes, then decide on jar, wax colour or customer messaging.
How long should I age vanilla test candles before choosing?
As long as your stock sits before sale. A suggested starting point is a check at day 60 against a freshly poured reference. If candles wait longer in your business, extend the test to match.
Should cold throw or hot throw count more when comparing oils?
Usually hot throw, because that is what customers pay for, but it depends on how you sell. Fix the weights before testing; a suggested split gives hot throw 25 and cold throw 15 out of 100.
How much vanilla fragrance oil do I need for a comparison test?
A 100 g sample per oil is enough for five 200 g candles at 8% (80 g) plus 20 g reserved for a fresh reference candle at the aged check. Both CSI vanilla samples cost ₹790.00.
