How Do I Find the Lowest Fragrance Load That Still Gives Strong Hot Throw so I'm Not Wasting Expensive Fragrance Oil?
Aktie
What does each point of load save? In a 200 g candle, 1 point = 2 g of oil. Per 1,000 candles that is 2 kg: ₹5,664.00 on Citrus Lemon, ₹18,240.00 on Santal Noir and ₹48,112.00 on Club De Nuit Intense Inspired, at 1 kg prices.
What does the test cost? For the Santal Noir example: a 100 g bottle (₹919.00), 1 kg of Chunks, a 10-pack of wicks and five jars — ₹1,931.00. Dropping 10% to 8% saves ₹36.48 a candle, so the test pays for itself in about 53 candles.
What counts as "still strong"? Two tests: the lower candle is not reliably picked as weaker in blind comparison with your reference, and it still meets your absolute target (for example, clearly noticeable at the doorway after an hour). Pass rules.
What one point of load is worth
Load is a percentage of the finished candle's weight, so in a 200 g candle each percentage point is 2 g of oil (the 200 g candle at 10% shows the conversion). Two grams sounds like nothing. Multiply by a thousand candles and it is two kilograms — often the price of a whole production pack. The table below prices one, two and four points on eight real CSI oils, from the cheapest in the collection to the dearest, all at their in-stock 1 kg price.
| Oil | 1 kg price | Per candle, 1 point | 1 point × 1,000 | 2 points (10% → 8%) × 1,000 | 4 points (10% → 6%) × 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon | ₹2,832.00 | ₹5.66 | ₹5,664.00 | ₹11,328.00 | ₹22,656.00 |
| British Rose | ₹3,068.00 | ₹6.14 | ₹6,136.00 | ₹12,272.00 | ₹24,544.00 |
| Jasmine | ₹3,923.00 | ₹7.85 | ₹7,846.00 | ₹15,692.00 | ₹31,384.00 |
| Lavender | ₹5,221.00 | ₹10.44 | ₹10,442.00 | ₹20,884.00 | ₹41,768.00 |
| Vanilla Bean | ₹7,646.00 | ₹15.29 | ₹15,292.00 | ₹30,584.00 | ₹61,168.00 |
| Santal Noir | ₹9,120.00 | ₹18.24 | ₹18,240.00 | ₹36,480.00 | ₹72,960.00 |
| Khamrah Qahwa | ₹15,056.00 | ₹30.11 | ₹30,112.00 | ₹60,224.00 | ₹1,20,448.00 |
| Club De Nuit Intense Inspired | ₹24,056.00 | ₹48.11 | ₹48,112.00 | ₹96,224.00 | ₹1,92,448.00 |
The pattern is obvious once it is written down: the dearer the oil, the more a step-down is worth. On Citrus Lemon, going from 10% to 8% saves ₹11,328.00 per thousand candles — useful, but not life-changing. On Club De Nuit Intense Inspired it saves ₹96,224.00. If you run a mixed range, start the step-down work at the expensive end. The twenty-scent screening guide applies the same logic to decide which scents get a step-down candle at all.
If you buy at 100 g rather than 1 kg, the numbers are similar for most oils, because above 50 g most CSI oils are priced almost flat per gram. Santal Noir is ₹9.19 a gram at 100 g against ₹9.12 at 1 kg, so a two-point step-down across 1,000 candles bought in 100 g bottles saves ₹36,760.00 instead of ₹36,480.00. The real price step on CSI's listed catalogue is between 15 g and 50 g/100 g, not between 100 g and the kilo.
The step-down protocol
The protocol has one rule underneath it: change only the load. Everything else — wax, wick, jar, fill weight, addition temperature, stirring, cure age, room, burn time, judges — stays fixed. If you change the wick at the same time as the load, you will not know which one the result belongs to.
Pass rules: relative and absolute
The relative test asks whether blind judges can reliably tell the lower candle from the reference. If they cannot, the extra oil in the reference was not doing anything they could detect. The absolute test asks whether the lower candle still does the job you sell it for: noticeable at the doorway, filling a medium room, or whatever your target is. A candle can pass the relative test and fail the absolute one if the reference was already weak — which is why you step down only from a load that passes.
| Result | Relative test (vs reference) | Absolute test (your target) | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear pass | Judges pick the reference as stronger no more often than they pick the duplicate reference | Meets target at both checkpoints | Step down again |
| Marginal | Reference picked as stronger a little more often than chance, but within the duplicate-reference spread | Meets target | Pass, but refine with a 1-point step before committing |
| Fail — relative | Reference picked as stronger clearly more often than the duplicate spread | Meets target | The oil was doing something; go back up one step |
| Fail — absolute | Any | Misses target | Stop; the step above is your floor |
| Fail — burn | Any | Any | Burn changed (pool, flame, soot): investigate before deciding |
How many judges? More is better, and three is a practical minimum; one person comparing their own candles is not a blind test, because they know what they poured. For a formal yes/no decision on a single expensive oil, with a proper count of how many correct answers you need before a difference is real, see the 7% vs 10% test. For the full scoring sheet, rooms and distances, see comparing loads objectively.
Worked example: Santal Noir from 10%
Suppose you pour Santal Noir in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 10% and the candle is doing its job. Santal Noir is a premium wood at ₹9.12 a gram at 1 kg, which makes it a natural candidate: every step down is worth more here than on most oils. The table shows what each step costs and saves. The results of your blind test are yours to find; nothing here says where Santal Noir will pass.
| Load | Oil + wax | Oil per candle | Saved vs 10%, per candle | Saved vs 10%, per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 20 g + 180 g | ₹182.40 | ₹0.00 | ₹0.00 |
| 9% | 18 g + 182 g | ₹164.16 | ₹18.24 | ₹18,240.00 |
| 8% | 16 g + 184 g | ₹145.92 | ₹36.48 | ₹36,480.00 |
| 7% | 14 g + 186 g | ₹127.68 | ₹54.72 | ₹54,720.00 |
| 6% | 12 g + 188 g | ₹109.44 | ₹72.96 | ₹72,960.00 |
| Item | Quantity | Price | Line total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santal Noir Fragrance Oil 100 g | 1 (uses 82 g) | ₹919.00 | ₹919.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 1 kg | 1 (uses 918 g) | ₹599.00 | ₹599.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (10) — or your tested wick | 1 pack | ₹59.00 | ₹59.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar (pack of 5) | 1 pack | ₹354.00 | ₹354.00 |
| Total | 5 candles | ₹1,931.00 |
If the test lets you drop from 10% to 8%, you save ₹36.48 of Santal Noir on every candle, so the whole test kit is paid back in about 53 candles. At 1,000 candles the saving is ₹36,480.00. If 8% fails, the test has still paid off: you now know your 10% is earning its place, and you will not be tempted to cut it later on a hunch.

Traps that fake a saving
A step-down test can mislead you in both directions. These are the most common ways it goes wrong, and each has a simple guard.
| Trap | What happens | Guard |
|---|---|---|
| Judging your own candles | You expect the lower load to be weaker and smell it that way — or you want the saving and miss a real difference | Coded candles, someone else keeps the key, several judges |
| Different cure ages | A younger lower-load candle fails, or an older one passes, for reasons unrelated to load | Pour all steps in one session; judge at the same age |
| Too little burn time | Differences show only once the pool is full; first-15-minute impressions mislead | Score at fixed checkpoints, e.g. one and two hours |
| Nose fatigue | The second candle smelled always seems weaker | Randomise order; rest and fresh air between candles; My Candle Smells Strong for the First Hour and Then I Stop Noticing It — How Do I Distinguish Fragrance Fatigue from Genuinely Weak Hot Throw? covers fatigue |
| Load convention slip | "8%" weighed as 8% of the wax is really 7.41% of the candle, so the saving looks larger than it is | Weigh oil as total × load; I'm Making a 1 Kg Soy Wax Batch at 8% Fragrance Load — Do I Add 80 g Fragrance Oil to 1 Kg Wax or Should the 8% be Calculated from the Total Finished Candle Weight? shows both conventions |
Finally, a step-down is not the only way to spend less oil. Sometimes a candle needs 10% only because something else is holding it back — an under-sized wick, a short cure, a narrow jar. Maximising hot throw without more oil works through those levers; fixing one of them can make a lower load pass that failed before. And once your load is settled, the bulk-ordering guide turns it into kilograms.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page shows you how to buy less fragrance oil from us. We publish it because a candle at the right load burns better and sells again, and because the arithmetic is the same whether you buy from us or anyone else.
Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026, at each oil's in-stock 1 kg price unless stated. Eco Candle Wick prices are from the 25 September pull; the White Matte Glass Jar is Blog 760's figure verified 10 September 2026. Savings figures are plain arithmetic: 2 g per point per 200 g candle × candles × price per gram.
The step sizes, pass rules, 14-day cure checkpoint, one- and two-hour scoring points and three-judge minimum are working assumptions, not CSI specifications. CSI publishes no throw or dosage data for any oil, and nothing here predicts where any oil will pass. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load is the share of finished candle weight (oil = total × load); 1 point = 2 g of oil in a 200 g candle. Coarse 2-point and fine 1-point steps, the duplicate reference, pass rules, three-judge minimum, 14-day cure checkpoint and one- and two-hour scoring points are working assumptions. Payback = test kit cost ÷ oil saved per candle. Ceilings of 13% (Chunks) and 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
