Write a target band on your own scale — noticeable on entering, clear in the room, never "too strong" — and score it in every room and at the front door after the flat has been shut. Then turn the dials in order: placement, reed count, load, bottle size.

CSI materials for a two-round small-flat test — Softness Base 500 ml, Gardenia, six 50 ml Gold bottles and 50 white fibre reeds · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I stop it being overpowering? Fewer reeds and a better spot first — out of the fan's path, away from the entrance. Lower the load only if three reeds are still too strong.

What does "strong enough" mean? A band you write down: e.g. 3–4 on a 0–5 scale in every room you use, with 5 ("too strong") anywhere a fail — including the front door after hours away.

Which bottle for a small flat? A 50 ml Gold bottle (₹82.60) — not because it is weaker, but because it is replaced sooner and costs less per bottle.

What does the test cost? ₹2,703.04 for six bottles across two rounds. See the kit.
The short answer
Answer: Control strength with placement and reed count before load: in a small flat start with a 50 ml bottle at 20%, test 3, 5 and 7 fibre reeds, and step to 15% only if three reeds still score "too strong".
Why: Reeds are free and reversible, and CSI's reed page says fewer reeds give a subtler, longer-lasting result. Remaking a blend is the costlier change, and the front-door moment is where small flats feel overpowering.
Method: One bottle in the flat at a time on a rota; scores on entering each room, at its centre and furthest point, and at the front door; weights on day 0–14 for grams per day.
"Strong but not overpowering" is a band on your scale — and four dials to stay in it Example house scale and target band · YOURS to write down, not an industry standard 0 nothing 1 arm's length 2 one metre 3 on entering 4 whole room 5 too strong target band: 3–4 in every room you use fail Placement out of fan path · away from entrance free — fix it before turning any other dial Reeds 3 · 5 · 7 the first dial to turn — free to reduce, changes g/day too Load 15% · 20% next — a new batch, inside the base page's 10–30% Bottle 50 ml vs 120 ml a size choice: more liquid, not more strength Fix placement, then turn one dial at a time, reeds first. In a small flat, the score that matters most is the one you give when you walk in after hours away — the moment an overpowering diffuser announces itself.
An example 0–5 house scale with a target band of 3–4 and "too strong" as the fail line, and the four strength dials in the order this page turns them: placement (free), reeds (free to reduce), load (a new batch) and bottle size (a size choice, not a strength dial). The scale and band are labelled examples you write down before testing.
Straight answer
How do I make a reed diffuser that smells strong without becoming overpowering in a small Indian apartment?
Aim for a band, not a maximum: write down a house scale (for example 0 nothing to 5 "too strong") and a target of 3–4 in every room you use, with any 5 a fail — including the front door when you come home to a flat that has been shut all day. Then turn the dials in order, cheapest first. Placement: out of the ceiling fan's path, away from AC vents and the entrance. Reeds: CSI's reed page says fewer reeds give a subtler, longer-lasting result, and taking reeds out is free — test 3, 5 and 7 in a 50 ml bottle at a fixed 20% (the Pure Performance page's recommended load). Load: only if three reeds in a good spot still score 5, remake at 15%, inside the base pages' 10–30%, against a fresh 20% control. Test one bottle in the flat at a time, or three diffusers will score as one. A 50 ml bottle suits small homes because it is replaced sooner, not because it is weaker. Two rounds with Softness Base and Gardenia cost ₹2,703.04.
One line: a 3–4 band and a front-door fail line; reeds down before load; one bottle in the flat at a time.
In a small flat, start small: a 50 ml Gold bottle, a soft floral in Softness Base (₹1,099.00 — its page names soft florals), and a reed-count ladder of 3, 5 and 7 white fibre reeds before you touch the load. Six bottles across two rounds, with Gardenia as the example oil: ₹2,703.04.

Strong and overpowering are two ends of one scale

You are not looking for the strongest diffuser. You are looking for the weakest one that still reaches every corner of the room you use.

A small apartment changes the problem. In a large living room the usual complaint is that a diffuser cannot reach the far wall; in a compact Indian flat — a bedroom, a living-dining space, a short corridor, often with doors left open between them — the same diffuser can fill everything, linger in fabrics, and greet you at the front door like a wall. "Overpowering" is the diffuser equivalent of a candle with too big a wick: more is not better past a point, and the point comes sooner in a small space. The method for making the diffuser is in the 100 ml method pillar; this page is about tuning its strength, and the load pillar covers the percentage side in depth.

So write down both ends before you test. On the example house scale in the diagram, 3 means you notice it on entering the room and 4 means it is clear everywhere in the room; 5 is "too strong for comfort" — someone wants to move the bottle or open a window. Your target is a band, 3 to 4, in every room you actually use, and a 5 anywhere is a fail even if every other score is perfect. There is no industry standard for any of this; the scale and the band are yours, and the point of writing them down is that you cannot move them after you have seen the results.

EXAMPLE flat · 10 ft ceiling · replace with your own rooms · no industry "ml per sq ft" standard exists
The rooms you are scoring
Room Size Floor area Air volume (example ceiling) Where to score
Bedroom 10 × 11 ft 110 sq ft (10.22 m²) 31.1 m³ On entering · centre · furthest seat or pillow
Living-dining 12 × 14 ft 168 sq ft (15.61 m²) 47.6 m³ On entering · centre · furthest seat or pillow
Corridor / entrance Your flat — — Front door, after the flat has been shut for hours

Two habits of Indian homes matter for strength. Ceiling fans and ACs move a lot of air: a fan can spread a diffuser through an open-plan flat, and an AC room with the door shut can concentrate it. And flats are often shut for long working days, so the strongest moment of the day is opening the front door in the evening. That is why this page adds a "front-door score": the first breath when you come home. A diffuser that scores 3–4 while you are in the room but 5 at the front door is overpowering for the person who lives there. Bedroom versus living-room performance and airflow covers the airflow side; different strengths for bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms covers giving each space its own formula.

The CSI principle
Write the target band and the fail line before the first score. Then turn the cheapest dial first.
Reeds first, then load, then bottle size; placement is free and should be fixed before any of them.

The four dials, in the order to turn them

Each dial changes strength, and each also changes something else — usually how fast the bottle empties. CSI publishes no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed, so the effects below are the general behaviour commonly described by makers and by CSI's own reed page; your scale and your scores are what confirm them in your flat.

Strength dials · general practice and CSI's page guidance, not measurements
What each dial does, and what it costs you
Dial Turn it down by Commonly described effect Side effect Cost to change
Placement Moving the bottle out of the fan's path, away from the AC vent, into a corner or a corridor Less scent carried around the flat None ₹0
Reeds Fewer reeds — the reed page: "fewer for subtler and longer-lasting" Less liquid exposed, weaker throw Bottle lasts longer ₹0 — remove reeds (₹9.00 each to add, white, from 50)
Load A lower percentage, inside the base page's 10–30% Less fragrance in what evaporates Cheaper per bottle A new batch (saves about ₹4.80 per 50 ml bottle from 20% to 15%)
Bottle size A 50 ml instead of 120 ml Not commonly a strength change on its own Shorter life per bottle ₹82.60 vs ₹106.20 per bottle

The reed dial comes first because it is free and reversible: pull two reeds out tonight and you have changed the diffuser without remaking anything. CSI's reed page puts it in one line: "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance … more reeds for stronger throw and faster diffusion; fewer for subtler and longer-lasting". That is the page's guidance, not a test result, and it is why this page tests below the page's range — 3 and 5 reeds — as well as 7. How many fibre reeds to test in a 100 ml bottle and eight reeds but still weak cover reed count from the other direction.

The common mistake: lowering the load first. A maker whose diffuser is too strong remakes the whole batch at a lower percentage, and the next one is too weak in the bedroom and still too strong at the front door, because the problem was eight reeds by a ceiling fan. Fix: fix placement, then take reeds out, and only remake the blend if three reeds in the right place are still too strong.

Round one: a reed ladder at a fixed 20%

Three 50 ml bottles from one batch of Softness Base and Gardenia at 20% — the load the Pure Performance page recommends and the middle of every CSI base page's range. Each bottle is filled to an example 45 g (45 ml at 1.00 g/ml). The control has 5 white reeds; the two test bottles have 3 and 7. One variable: reed count.

Round 1 · one 145 g batch at 20% = 29.00 g oil + 116.00 g base · three 50 ml bottles + 10 g clarity sample
Reed ladder
Bottle Reeds Load Fill The one difference
R3 3 20% 45 g Two reeds fewer than control
R5 — control 5 20% 45 g None
R7 7 20% 45 g Two reeds more than control
1
Fix placement first, and write it downChoose the bottle's spot: out of the fan's direct path, not under an AC vent, not in direct sun. Mark it with tape. Every bottle in this test sits in that spot when it is being scored.
2
Mix, rest, checkWeigh 116.00 g of Softness, tare, add 29.00 g of Gardenia, stir until clear, pour a 10 g clarity sample, rest 24–48 hours as the base page asks, then read the sample against white and black card.
3
Fill and reedWeigh 45 g into each bottle. Insert 3, 5 and 7 reeds dealt from one pack. Flip once after the first hour (the Pure Performance page's instruction — check your own base's page). Weigh each bottle with reeds: day 0.
4
One bottle in the flat at a timeThis is the step that makes a small-flat test work. Three diffusers in one flat score as one big diffuser. Run one bottle in the marked spot for its scoring day while the others sit capped in a cupboard; rotate on a fixed rota and keep weighing all three on schedule.
5
Score every room and the front doorOn each bottle's scoring day: on entering each room, at its centre, at the furthest seat or pillow — and the front-door score when you come home after the flat has been shut. Scorer from fresh air; fan and AC as you normally run them, noted on the sheet.
6
Weigh for lifeDay 0, 1, 3, 7, 14. g/day for each bottle tells you what each reed count costs in weeks.

Round two: only if three reeds are still too strong

If the lowest reed count still scores 5 somewhere, the blend is the next dial. Not before.

Round two keeps the reed count you chose in round one — 5 in the example — and changes only the load. Two bottles at 15% (inside the base page's 10–30% range) against one freshly made 20% control. The fresh control matters: comparing a new 15% bottle with a two-week-old 20% bottle compares a new diffuser with a tired one. The batch is 100 g at 15% — 15.00 g of oil and 85.00 g of base — plus 45 g at 20% for the control (9.00 g oil + 36.00 g base).

Lowering the load is a real formula change, so it carries the rest of the method with it: a new clarity sample, a new 24–48 hour rest, and a new record. If 15% is still too strong at three reeds in a good spot, the honest conclusion is that this oil is strong for your flat, and the next step is a smaller fill or a different oil, not 10%. Weak at 15% — increase or change base? and 15%, 20% or 25% for commercial sale look at the same ladder from the opposite side.

A lower load is also a cheaper bottle
At production rates the liquid in a 50 ml bottle costs ₹118.12 at 20% and ₹113.31 at 15% with Gardenia in Softness at an example density. If 15% hits your band, you save ₹4.80 on every bottle — small, but it is money you were spending on a smell that was too strong.

Fiber Diffuser Reeds (White) 30 reeds 1 × pack of 50 ₹450.00 20 reeds
CSI total ₹2,703.04

Round one alone needs only 29.00 g of oil; the 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g covers both rounds. If round one solves the problem with the reed dial alone, the round-two oil and bottles carry over to your next batch. A Weighing Scale (₹354.00) and a 100 ml beaker (₹300.00) are the only tools; check what steps the scale's display moves in, since the resolution is not published.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The way to sell more here is a 120 ml bottle and a stronger load. For a small flat, the evidence you collect will more likely point the other way: a 50 ml bottle, fewer reeds, perhaps a lower load — cheaper per bottle and replaced less often. If three reeds at 20% sit inside your band, you need nothing from this kit beyond the first round. Buy the 120 ml only when a bigger room asks for it.

What strength costs per bottle

Per 50 ml bottle · 45 g fill · production rates (Gardenia 1 kg, Softness 500 ml at example 1.00 g/ml, white reeds ₹9.00) · excludes labels, box, labour, freight and GST
Cost by formula
Formula Liquid Bottle Reeds Total
20%, 3 reeds ₹118.12 ₹82.60 ₹27.00 ₹227.72
20%, 5 reeds ₹118.12 ₹82.60 ₹45.00 ₹245.72
20%, 7 reeds ₹118.12 ₹82.60 ₹63.00 ₹263.72
15%, 5 reeds ₹113.31 ₹82.60 ₹45.00 ₹240.91

The bottle is the biggest line in every row, and the reed count moves the cost more than the load does. For a diffuser you sell into small homes, that is useful: the formula that sits in a 3–4 band with fewer reeds is both the one your customer prefers and the cheaper one to make. The full cost of a diffuser adds packaging and labour.

In a small flat, the best diffuser is the one you notice when you walk in and forget about after a minute — not the one your neighbour notices on the landing.

Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026 — 25 days away. Homes fill with guests, cooking and incense over the festival, and a diffuser that suits an ordinary week can feel too strong in a crowded flat. Round one fits before Diwali; give gift diffusers a reed count your customer can adjust, and say so on the card. Ask us about reeds and bottles for gift sets on WhatsApp.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy sale is a 120 ml bottle and a higher load. This page recommends the smaller bottle, fewer reeds and possibly a lower load — all cheaper — tells you that you may need only the first round, and says plainly that we publish no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed.

Diffuser bases, fibre reeds, Gold bottles, beakers, scale and mixer are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Fragrance oils are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every gram split, ml-to-g conversion, per-bottle cost and kit total on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; densities are labelled examples, never CSI specifications.

Bottle counts per arm, clarity checkpoints, weighing schedules, room-scoring scales and loss allowances are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed diffuser performance. The flat's rooms, the 10 ft ceiling, the 45 ml fill, the 1.00 g/ml density, the 0–5 scale, the 3–4 band and the front-door score are labelled examples you replace with your own. Frequently asked questions

How do I make my reed diffuser less strong?
Move it out of fans and draughts and away from the entrance, then remove reeds — CSI's reed page says fewer reeds give a subtler, longer-lasting result. Remake at a lower load only if that is not enough.
How many reeds for a small room?
CSI's reed page suggests 6–8 for a 50–100 ml bottle as a balance; for a small room, test 3 and 5 against it and score the room. Fewer reeds also make the bottle last longer.
Can a reed diffuser be too strong?
Yes — especially in a small, closed flat. Treat "too strong for comfort" as a fail on your scale, and check the moment you open the front door after hours away.
What fragrance percentage for a reed diffuser in a small room?
Start at 20% (the Pure Performance page's recommendation) with fewer reeds; step down to 15% only if reeds and placement do not bring it into your band. Stay inside the base page's 10–30% and your oil's IFRA Category 10A limit.
Where should I place a reed diffuser in a small apartment?
Out of the direct path of ceiling fans and AC vents, out of direct sun, and not right by the front door if the flat is shut for long periods. Mark the spot and keep it for testing.
Is a 50 ml reed diffuser enough for a 1BHK?
It can be — strength comes from reeds, load and placement more than bottle size. A 50 ml bottle empties sooner; weigh it to find its days of life in your flat.
A band, not a maximum
Placement. Reeds. Then load.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Fragrance load is a share of the total blend by weight (oil g = blend g × L; base g = blend g × (1 − L)). No density is published for any CSI base or oil: every ml-to-g conversion uses a labelled example density and shows ±5%; weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours. Round 1: one 145 g batch at 20% into three 50 ml bottles (45 g each at an example 1.00 g/ml) with 3/5/7 white reeds; round 2: 100 g at 15% (two bottles) + 45 g at 20% (fresh control) at 5 reeds. Example flat: bedroom 10 × 11 ft, living-dining 12 × 14 ft, 10 ft ceiling. Production costs use Gardenia at the 1 kg rate, Softness 500 ml at the example density, the 50 ml bottle at ₹82.60 and white reeds at ₹9.00. The scale, band and front-door score are labelled house standards. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI test results): every base is a "Professional … Reed & Car Diffuser Base", crystal clear per its page, used at 10–30% fragrance of the total blend with a 24–48 hour rest before bottling. Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", a "typical working blend 75% base + 25% fragrance", the example "for a 100 ml finished diffuser at 25%: 75 ml base + 25 ml fragrance oil", and "flip reeds after the first hour". Longevity — oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand; "avoid light florals, fresh citrus, aquatics — use Lift Base"; slower "cold diffusion"; "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest"; "allow 2–3 hours before the first flip". Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity. Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand; "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils". Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky, light gourmand. Reed page — 20.3 cm long; "for a standard 50–100 ml diffuser bottle, 6–8 reeds gives a good balance". Bottle page — variants 50 ml and 120 ml (its text says "50 and 100ml"); neck diameter, fill line and any reducer are not stated. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity result for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no bottle neck size or fill line; no IFRA percentage for any oil; and no bulk base price. The five bases are told apart only by what their pages say they are for — never by a measured result. IFRA: reed diffusers are listed under Category 10A in current IFRA amendments as commonly summarised in suppliers' guides; read the Category 10A limit on the certificate for your oil, which CSI provides on WhatsApp request. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
