Wedding orders arrive as a guest count and a format. The fragrance order is one line of arithmetic away: pieces × fill × load, plus an allowance for what you lose in the jug and the test burns. This page does the arithmetic for every CSI wedding format at four common counts, then turns the grams into packs.
×1.05
the working wastage multiplier used on this page — 5% extra for pour loss and test burns · 3% is the lean end · a planning assumption, not a measured figure
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil do I need for 500 wedding favours? At 8%: 2,000 g for 50 g velvet hearts, 2,800 g for 70 g votives, 3,400 g for 85 g tins and 8,000 g for 200 g jars. Add 3–5% for wastage: 2,100 g, 2,940 g, 3,570 g and 8,400 g at 5%. Full matrix in the grams table.

What is the formula? Oil (g) = pieces × fill (g) × load × (1 + wastage). For 300 hearts at 8% with 5%: 300 × 50 × 0.08 × 1.05 = 1,260 g. Wax is pieces × fill × (1 − load) × (1 + wastage).

How much wastage should I allow? Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss, jug residue, top-up pours and test burns — a working assumption. Use 5% for your first large order and for small formats, where jug loss is a bigger share. See wastage.

How do I turn grams into packs? Cover the grams with whole kilos first, then 500 g and 100 g top-ups. For most oils the 100 g and 1 kg cost the same per gram, so top-ups are nearly free; see grams to packs.
The short answer
Formula: Oil = pieces × fill × 8% × 1.05. Per piece at 8%: 50 g heart 4 g · 70 g votive 5.6 g · 85 g tin 6.8 g · 160 g Salsa 12.8 g · 200 g jar 16 g.
1,000 pieces: At 8% + 5%: hearts 4,200 g · 50 g votives 4,200 g · 70 g votives 5,880 g · tins 7,140 g · Salsa 13,440 g · 200 g jars 16,800 g.
Worked wedding: 400 velvet hearts + 250 tins, two scents: 3,465 g of oil with 5%, 39,847.5 g of CSI 464. Full order ₹68,301.58.

Grams of fragrance oil for 500 wedding pieces, by format — 8% load, before wastage Oil (g) = pieces × fill (g) × load × (1 + wastage) 2,000 g 50 g velvet heart 50 g fill 2,000 g votive (50 g) 50 g fill 2,800 g votive (70 g) 70 g fill 3,400 g 85 g tin 85 g fill 6,400 g 200 ml Salsa (160 g) 160 g fill 8,000 g 200 g jar 200 g fill Votive and Salsa fills are illustrative — weigh yours. Add 3–5% wastage (working assumption).
Oil for 500 pieces in each wedding format at an 8% load, before any wastage allowance. The 50 g heart and the 50 g votive need the same oil; the 200 g jar needs four times as much. The heart and tin fills are published; the votive and Salsa fills are illustrative and should be replaced with the weight of one filled container of your own wax.
Straight answer
How much fragrance oil do I need for a bulk wedding candle order?
Multiply four numbers: pieces × fill × load × (1 + wastage). The fill depends on the format: CSI's velvet heart holds 50 g and the Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g; votives and Salsa jars have no published fill, so weigh one. At an 8% load, each heart needs 4 g of oil and each tin 6.8 g. With a working 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns, 500 hearts need 2,100 g, 500 tins 3,570 g and 500 White Matte jars at 200 g 8,400 g; for 1,000 pieces, double those. Wax is the rest of the fill: 46 g per heart, 78.2 g per tin. Then turn the grams into packs: whole kilos first, 500 g and 100 g top-ups after, because on CSI's list most oils cost the same per gram at 100 g as at 1 kg. A two-function wedding of 400 hearts in Ylang Ylang Flower and 250 tins in Peach Melon Berry needs 3,465 g of oil and 39,847.5 g of wax, and prices at ₹68,301.58 for the full order. The wastage figure is a planning assumption, not a measurement; keep a log on your first big order and use your own number next time.
One line: pieces × fill × 8% × 1.05 gives the grams; the pack mix comes after.
Before you calculate a guest list, pour one test piece per format from a 15 g tester so you know the fill you are really working with. Ylang Ylang Flower 15 g ₹106.20 makes three 50 g velvet hearts at 8% with 3 g spare; Peach Melon Berry 15 g ₹81.42 makes two 85 g tins with 1.4 g spare.

The grams matrix

Every wedding quantity question has the same shape. Only the numbers change.

The matrix below gives the oil for each CSI wedding format at four counts, at the 8% load this series uses for planning. Fills: the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar has a listed 50 g wax capacity and the Golden Aluminium Tin a listed 85 g fill. The black votive and 200 ml Salsa jar have no published fill, so they are shown at illustrative fills (50 g and 70 g for the votive, 160 g for the Salsa). The White Matte jar uses the series' 200 g working fill. Tealight cups are not listed in the catalogue; for tealight quantities see the 1,000-tealight order.

200 g jar 4,120 g 4,200 g 8,240 g 8,400 g 16,480 g 16,800 g

Two things are worth noticing. First, the 50 g heart and the 50 g votive need identical oil, so the choice between them is about look, packaging and cost per container, which wedding favour candles works through. Second, the gap between 3% and 5% is small in grams but real in packs: for 500 tins it is 3,502 g against 3,570 g — 68 g, less than one 100 g bottle — but for 1,000 White Matte jars it is 16,480 g against 16,800 g, 320 g, which is three or four 100 g bottles.

Wax outweighs oil by about 11.5 to 1 at an 8% load, so the wax order is the heavy one to plan and store. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg and rated up to 10% fragrance; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 and 5 kg (₹599.90 at 10 kg) and rated up to 13%. Both are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.

What the wastage allowance covers

"Plan 3–5% extra" is a working assumption, and it helps to know what it is for so you can judge where your own order sits. It covers four kinds of loss:

Sources of loss in a bulk pour · general practice, not measured CSI figures
Where the extra oil goes
Source What happens Bigger when…
Jug and equipment residue Scented wax left on the jug, thermometer and stirring stick after each batch Batches are small and many; formats are small
Top-up or second pours Extra scented wax to fill sinkholes or level tops Formats are deeper; room is cool
Test burns Pieces poured to check wick and scent before the main run, and one per batch after You are using a new oil, wax or container
Rejects Pieces that set badly, crack or get knocked Formats are fiddly; the pour is rushed

Use 5% for your first large wedding order, for small formats such as 50 g hearts (where the jug residue from each batch is a larger share of what you pour), and whenever you are working with an oil or container you have not used before. Use 3% for a repeat order in a format and oil you know well. Keep a simple log on your first order — oil bought, oil left, pieces poured — and replace our assumption with your own figure next time.

Wastage is not the same as spare favours
The wastage allowance is oil you lose. Spare favours — extra pieces for late guests or breakages in transit — are pieces you make on purpose. Add them to the count before you apply the formula: for 400 guests plus 20 spare hearts, calculate 420 × 50 × 0.08 × 1.05 = 1,764 g, not 400 hearts plus a bigger percentage.
Running out on the last tray. A maker calculates 500 hearts at exactly 2,000 g, buys two 1 kg packs, and finds 30 hearts short at the end after jug residue and a few rejects. Buying one 100 g bottle up front — the 5% — would have cost a few hundred rupees; reordering in the week of a wedding costs time you do not have. Always add the allowance before you buy.

If you change the load

Everything above uses 8%. Some couples want a lighter scent for favours placed on dining tables; some makers want more. Load changes the oil in direct proportion. The table shows 500 pieces at 6%, 8% and 10%, with 5% allowance.

500 pieces · 5% allowance · CSI 464 rated up to 10%, Chunks up to 13%
Oil for 500 pieces at 6%, 8% and 10%
Format 6% 8% 10%
50 g velvet heart 1,575 g 2,100 g 2,625 g
votive (50 g) 1,575 g 2,100 g 2,625 g
votive (70 g) 2,205 g 2,940 g 3,675 g
85 g tin 2,677.5 g 3,570 g 4,462.5 g
200 ml Salsa (160 g) 5,040 g 6,720 g 8,400 g
200 g jar 6,300 g 8,400 g 10,500 g

Going from 8% to 10% adds a quarter to the oil: for 500 tins, 3,570 g becomes 4,462.5 g. Stay within the wax maker's stated maximum — 10% for CSI 464, 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — and for other waxes check the product page or ask. More oil than the wick can burn cleanly does not make a stronger favour, so test before you raise it. For how load behaves in small candles, see which fragrances work best in small candles.

Grams to packs

The grams are the answer to "how much". The packs are the answer to "what do I click".

Oils are sold in 15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs, though not every oil in every size. For most oils the per-gram price is the same from 50 g or 100 g upward, so the cheapest way to cover a gram figure is usually whole kilos plus a 500 g and 100 g top-up. Where an oil has a real kilo break, rounding up to the next kilo can be close in price. The table converts common wedding gram figures into practical in-stock pack mixes for four wedding-suitable oils.

Ylang Ylang Flower is one of the oils where size pays: ₹5.90 a gram at 100 g, ₹5.43 at 500 g and ₹5.31 at 1 kg, a 10.0% break. Peach Melon Berry, Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon and Solar Bloom are priced essentially flat from 100 g to 1 kg, so for them the pack mix is purely about covering the grams without buying stock you will not use. Per-gram price breaks above 100 g are rare across the catalogue: for 52 of 91 oils, the 1 kg is within 1% of the 100 g.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. It would suit us if every wedding maker rounded up to whole kilos. For 500 hearts (2,100 g) of Peach Melon Berry, three kilos cost ₹12,531.60 and leave 900 g unused; the practical mix above costs ₹8,772.12. Buy the kilo only when you have another order to use it on, or when the oil has a real break.

That is ₹105.08 per piece across the 650 pieces, before labour, favour packaging, freight and GST. The wax (₹20,296.00) and the velvet hearts (₹18,000.00) are the two largest lines, and each costs more than both oils together (₹16,722.96) — typical of small formats. For the per-favour costing and the choice between hearts, votives and tins, see wedding favour candles; for the same arithmetic applied to Diwali, how much oil to buy for Diwali production.

The CSI principle
Count, fill, load, allowance — in that order, every time.
Most quantity mistakes come from skipping one of the four: a guest count without spares, a fill nobody weighed, a load changed after the maths, or no allowance for the jug. Write all four down before you buy.
The November–February wedding season follows Diwali on 8 November 2026, and several weddings can land in the same fortnight. Send us your counts and formats on WhatsApp and we will check the grams, confirm stock (including velvet hearts at volume) and quote, with a GST invoice and MSDS and IFRA documents on request. We do not publish courier times or restock dates.
Quote my wedding quantities

For scents by recipient, the gifting hub is the starting point; for a Diwali run that precedes the wedding season, Diwali gift candle production; and for corporate wedding-season orders at 1,000 pieces, the 1,000-piece corporate guide. If a couple wants more than one scent in the same function, split the count before applying the formula and buy each oil separately; the 500-piece split guide shows how leftovers grow with each extra scent. For orders large enough to need a quote beyond the listed packs, wholesale fragrance oils for bulk gifting orders explains the route, and the bulk supplier checklist covers what to confirm before you rely on one supplier for the season.

Four hundred hearts is four hundred times four grams. Add five per cent and order it before the wedding week.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A quantity page is an easy place to round everything up to whole kilos. This page gives the exact grams, a stated allowance, and pack mixes that avoid buying oil you will not use — even though rounding up would sell more.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Velvet hearts, tins, votives, Salsa jars, wicks and wick stickers are from the 24–25 September 2026 catalogue pull; the White Matte Glass Jar is the figure verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Gram figures are plain arithmetic; pack mixes are practical in-stock combinations covering each figure.

The 8% load, the 3% and 5% wastage allowances, the spare-favour example and the illustrative votive and Salsa fills are working assumptions for planning, not measurements. We have not published throw measurements for any oil and do not publish wedding dates, stock quantities or courier times. For quantities, stock checks and quotes, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil do I need for 100 candles?
At 8%: 400 g for 50 g pieces, 680 g for 85 g tins, 1,600 g for 200 g jars. Add 3–5% for pour loss and test burns — at 5%, 420 g, 714 g and 1,680 g.
How do you calculate fragrance oil for candles in bulk?
Oil (g) = pieces × fill weight (g) × load × (1 + wastage). For 1,000 tins of 85 g at 8% with 5% wastage: 1,000 × 85 × 0.08 × 1.05 = 7,140 g. Use the fill of the container you are actually pouring, weighed if it is not published.
How much wax do I need for 500 wedding favours?
Wax is the fill minus the oil. At 8%, a 50 g heart takes 46 g of wax, so 500 hearts need 23,000 g, or 24,150 g with 5%. 500 tins of 85 g need 39,100 g, or 41,055 g with 5%.
What wastage percentage should I use for candle making?
Plan 3–5% extra for pour loss, jug residue, top-ups and test burns — a working assumption. Use 5% for a first large order, small formats and new oils or containers; 3% for repeat orders you know well. Log your real figure and use it next time.
Should I buy 1 kg or several smaller packs for a wedding order?
Cover the grams with whole kilos plus 500 g and 100 g top-ups. For most oils the per-gram price is the same from 100 g to 1 kg, so top-ups cost almost nothing extra and you avoid leftover stock. Oils with a real kilo break, such as Ylang Ylang Flower (10.0%), reward rounding up if you will use the rest.
How much fragrance oil for 1,000 wedding candles?
At 8% with 5% allowance: 4,200 g for 50 g hearts or votives, 5,880 g for 70 g votives, 7,140 g for 85 g tins, 13,440 g for 160 g Salsa fills, 16,800 g for 200 g jars. Confirm stock at that volume on WhatsApp before you promise the order.
Pieces × fill × load × allowance
Work out the grams, add the allowance, then buy kilos plus top-ups — not a kilo more than the wedding needs.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Oil = pieces × fill × load × (1 + wastage); wax = pieces × fill × (1 − load) × (1 + wastage). Fills: velvet heart 50 g and tin 85 g are listed; White Matte jar 200 g is the series' working fill; votive 50 g / 70 g and Salsa 160 g are illustrative. The 8% load and the 3% / 5% wastage allowances are planning assumptions; the loss sources are general candle-making practice, not measured CSI figures. Pack mixes are practical combinations of in-stock sizes. Price-break figures compare per-gram prices of the same oil across listed sizes. Wax fragrance ceilings (10% CSI 464, 13% Chunks) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
