How do I test a fragrance oil before launching a candle? In four stages, each answering one question. Stage 1 — does it smell right, blind, on a 15 g trial? Stage 2 — does it survive being put into your wax at your load, judged cold? Stage 3 — which wick gives a full melt pool, and does the throw arrive? Stage 4 — do strangers agree, after the full cure?

How many test candles do I need? Twenty for a proper qualification: 4 in the cold-throw stage, 6 across three wick options, 3 in the cure comparison, 6 for a customer panel, and 1 spare.

What does it cost? ₹5,578.30 of materials — six 15 g trials at ₹560.50, two 50 g finalists at ₹500, 200 g of the winner at ₹1,080, twenty jars at ₹944, 2.5 kg of wax at ₹1,497, three wick options at ₹896.80 and wick stickers at ₹100.

Is it worth it? A 500-candle run of 200g candles in Lavender at an 8% load costs about ₹1,23,507 in materials. The test is 4.5% of that, and it happens before the money is committed.
The short answer
Never judge an oil from the bottle: a bottle is neat oil at room temperature; a candle is a few per cent of that oil dispersed in wax and released from a melt pool at a much lower concentration. Strength from the bottle predicts almost nothing.
Change one variable per stage: Stage 2 varies the oil and holds the wick; Stage 3 varies the wick and holds the oil; Stage 4 varies only the cure length. A test that moves two things at once cannot tell you which one worked.
Write the go/no-go criteria before you pour: a full melt pool reaching the glass in roughly two to three hours, no soot or mushrooming, throw you would pay for at 120 minutes, and no discolouration you had not budgeted for. Decide the thresholds first, so the result cannot be argued with afterwards.

Each stage is narrower than the last, and each one costs more per candidate than the stage before. That is the point of the order: the cheapest test runs first, on the most candidates, and the expensive tests only ever run on something that has already survived.

What is the right way to test a fragrance oil before launching a candle?
Run four stages in order, cheapest first, each answering exactly one question and changing exactly one variable. Stage 1 is a blind cold panel on six 15 g trials — ₹560.50 for trials of Citrus Lemon, Roasted Coffee, Lavender, British Rose, Apple Cinnamon and Sandalwood — smelled on blotters and unlabelled, which removes the name from the judgement. Stage 2 takes two finalists into wax at your production load: two 120g jars each, four jars, judged cold after the cure. Stage 3 takes the winner across three wick optionsEco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) and Thick (C2) plus a Performance Wooden Wick — two jars each, burned to find which one opens a full melt pool without soot. Why the bottle tells you nothing

Every oil smells strong from an open bottle. That is what a bottle is for.

The single commonest pre-launch mistake is choosing a fragrance by opening bottles and picking the one that hits hardest. It feels like evidence and it is almost pure noise, for three reasons worth being precise about.

Concentration. The bottle is 100% fragrance oil at room temperature. A candle at an 8% load is 16 g of oil in a 200g candle, and what reaches the room is a fraction of that, released over hours from the surface of a melt pool. You are judging a material at roughly twelve times the concentration it will ever be used at.

Temperature and time. A bottle presents everything at once, so the volatile top notes dominate. A candle presents the top notes briefly and then lives on its base. An oil that is exciting from the bottle and thin in a cured candle is usually one whose character sat entirely in its top — which is why you read the stated pyramid rather than trusting your nose at the bottle. 102 of CSI's 107 fragrance pages state notes, and 88 state a full top / heart / base structure.

Your nose. Three bottles in, olfactory fatigue has set in and you are ranking the order you smelled them in rather than the oils. This is the reason Stage 1 is blind, spaced, and capped at six candidates in a session.

Strength from the bottle is not quality, and cheapness is not weakness. A concentrated oil and a diluted one can smell identically strong from a bottle; what differs is how much material is left to carry once it is at 8% in wax. There is no way to read concentration off a bottle, and no CSI page publishes one — so the only honest tests are the stated note structure, the published specifications, the real reviews, and your own blind test in wax. Note also that price ranks badly as a predictor: Citrus Lemon at ₹300 per 100 gm and Dark Vanilla Oud at ₹590 are not in a quality order, they are in a different-scent order. Get the numbers the pages do not publish, before Stage 3
Between Stage 2 and Stage 3, ask CSI on WhatsApp for the SDS figure for your surviving oil if its page publishes no flash point — 56 of the 107 fragrance oil pages state none at all, and 32 state only the line "flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based products rather than a measurement of that oil. Only 18 pages state a measured value, and the spread matters: Neroli states 85°C and Palo Santo 93°C, while Vetiver states 206°C. Since soy waxes commonly specify adding fragrance at 80–90°C, an oil with a low stated figure changes your add temperature. The Gardenia page, stating 98°C, tells you outright to add the oil to wax below that temperature.

The protocol, step by step

Twenty jars, four to six weeks of calendar time, and one rule that governs all of it: one variable per stage. Everything below is a protocol to run. The outcomes are yours and they will differ with your wax, your wick, your jar diameter and your room.

Write the brief and the pass marks firstOne page, before you buy anything: what the scent is for, which family, what it must not smell like, the load you will pour at, the jar and its weighed fill, and the numeric thresholds for each stage. Fixing "full pool in 2–3 hours, no soot, throw 4 of 5 at 120 minutes" in advance is what stops you talking yourself into a scent you have spent money on.

Stage 1 — blind, on blotters, six oils, one sessionDecant each 15 g trial onto a plain paper strip, number the strips on the reverse and have someone else shuffle them. One sniff each, thirty seconds apart, coffee beans or plain water between. Record a 1–5 score and one word per strip. Then repeat the whole thing 24 hours later in a different order — an oil that ranks first on both days is a real result; one that moves three places is your nose, not the oil.

Stage 2 — two finalists into wax, four jars, judged coldBuy 50 g of each finalist. Pour two identical 120g jars of each at your production load — at 8% that is 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil per jar — with the same wick in all four. Follow the wax page's stated temperatures: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state fragrance in at 80–90°C and a pour at 70–80°C. Cure with lids on for 14 days, then score cold throw blind. Also look: any oily film, any separation, any colour change against a control jar of unscented wax.

Stage 3 — one oil, three wicks, six jars, burnedBuy 200 g of the winner. Pour six jars: two with Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1), two with Thick (C2), two with a Performance Wooden Wick. Identical wax, load, jar and temperatures. After a 14-day cure, burn one of each pair for three hours and record minutes to a melt pool that reaches the glass, flame height, soot, mushrooming and throw at 30 and 120 minutes. Keep the second of each pair unburned as a reference.

Stage 4 — three jars, one variable: timePour three more jars with the winning oil and the winning wick on the same day, and burn them at day 7, day 14 and day 21. Nothing else changes. This is the stage that tells you when the candle is actually ready to sell, and it is the cheapest performance gain available — a candle judged weak at 48 hours often reads strong at day 14. Panel — six candles, six households, one cardPour six candles to the finished recipe and give them to six people who are not friends being polite. One side of paper: what does it smell like in one word, can you smell it unlit, can you smell it from the next room after an hour, would you pay your price for it, would you buy it again. Collect the cards before you discuss anything. Four of six saying yes to the last two questions is a reasonable go threshold; set your own in advance.
Do not skip Stage 2 because Stage 1 was decisive. The most expensive failure in candle making is an oil that smells superb on a blotter and disappears in wax — and it is common enough that a whole diagnostic exists for it. The mechanism is straightforward: a blotter presents neat oil to the air, while wax holds the oil in solution and releases it only from the melt pool surface. Four jars and a 14-day wait is the entire cost of finding out, against a production pack and a poured batch if you don't. A Stage 1 shortlist should mix families and include at least one oil whose page warns you about something — because catching that warning in a test is exactly what the test is for. Each card shows every listed pack size against what a 120g test jar at an 8% load consumes: 9.6 g of oil and 110.4 g of wax.

Floral · the most review-evidenced candidate
Lavender Fragrance Oil
The oil with the most published reviews in the CSI fragrance range — six at the time of writing, which is real evidence from other makers before you have spent anything. Its page states top notes of fresh lavender, middle notes of herbal green, a base of soft musk, family floral / herbal / fresh, and a stated candle load of 6–10%, with 10–15% for wax melts. Reviewer Akansha writes: "Fragrance is awesome. Hot throw is also very good after burn candle." Reviewer Priyanka Purohit: "Quality of fragrance is very good. Cold through and hot though both are perfect." Useful as a shortlist benchmark precisely because others have burned it — but their wax and wick are not yours, so it still has to pass your Stage 3.

Gourmand · the one with a warning to catch
Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil
Include this one because its page tells you what to test for. Stated pyramid: fresh coffee beans top, dark chocolate and rich espresso heart, vanilla and caramel base. Stated soy load 6–10%, cure 48 to 72 hours. Stated flashpoint approximately 191–193°C — one of only 18 CSI oils publishing a measured value, which makes its add temperature easy to plan. And stated vanillin content present — test in white wax before full batch production. That last line is a Stage 2 instruction: pour one of your two jars in your palest wax, keep a control, and leave both in daylight for the full cure. Discolouration discovered in testing is a design decision; discovered after launch it is a returns problem.

Floral · the best-documented of the three
British Rose Fragrance Oil
The technically cleanest candidate, and a useful control in a shortlist because so little about it is unknown. Its page states a single-note profile of fresh, dewy roses with subtle green and soft floral undertones, a measured flashpoint of 192°C, vanillin content 0% — no discolouration or yellowing, safe for white, cream and pastel waxes, and a stated soy load of up to 10% with a 48–72 hour cure, with the page suggesting a start at 10%. It is also the cheapest per gram of the three at ₹3.422 at 100 gm. Reviewer Emma Bechara writes of finding "strong fragrance in cold throw and hot throw and you can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell" — which is a hypothesis your Stage 4 can check rather than a result you can borrow.

The CSI principle
A test is only a test if you wrote down what would make it fail before you poured it.
Everything else is a tasting. Twenty jars with thresholds fixed in advance will tell you to walk away from a scent you had already fallen for — and that refusal, once, is worth more than the ₹5,578.30 the whole protocol costs. The brands that ship a weak candle are rarely the ones that did not test. They are the ones that tested and then negotiated with the result.

Now the comparison that justifies it. A 500-candle run of 200g candles at an 8% load in the winning oil needs 8 kg of fragrance, 92 kg of wax, 500 jars and 500 wicks: with Lavender at ₹5,221 per kilo, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 per 10 kg, jars at ₹47.20 and Eco Thin wicks at ₹5.90, that is ₹1,23,507 of materials, ₹247.01 a candle. The qualification is 4.5% of that figure and it happens first. Spread across the 500 candles the test adds ₹11.16 each; spread across a first run of 100 it is ₹55.78. Either way it is the cheapest insurance on this page.

Twenty jars, not twenty candles you can sell. Test jars are lab samples: numbered on the base, logged, burned by you, and never sold — not even the unburned references at the end. Two reasons. A test jar has usually been poured at a deliberately non-final wick or cure length, so it is not the product. And a candle in a customer's home that tunnels or soots costs you the customer plus the review, which is worth vastly more than ₹47.20 of glass. Two fields do most of the work. Actual temperatures, because "I aimed for 85°C" is not a record and a five-degree drift is a real variable. And colour against the unscented control, because discolouration is gradual and the only way to see it is side by side with wax that has no oil in it — which costs one extra jar of plain wax and settles a question no product page can answer for your specific wax.

Go, no-go, and what a fail means

A fail is information, not a loss — but only if you know which stage failed, because each one points at a different fix. The table gives the thresholds most makers end up using and the honest next move for each failure. Set your own numbers before you pour; these are a starting point, not a standard.

The ordering of the Stage 3 hot-throw fix is the part most worth internalising. A weak hot throw is far more often a pool that never opened than an oil that cannot perform — fragrance leaves a candle from the surface of the melt pool, so pool area is release area. Frequently asked questions

How long should I test a fragrance oil before launching a candle?
Allow six to eight weeks end to end. Stage 1 takes two days. Stage 2 needs a 14-day cure before you can score cold throw. Stage 3 needs another pour and another 14-day cure before burning three wick options. Stage 4 runs to day 21 by definition, and the customer panel takes a week on top. You can compress it by pouring Stages 3 and 4 on the same day, but you cannot compress the cure — that is calendar time, and it is also free.
How many test candles do I need to qualify one fragrance?
Twenty, in 120g jars: four in Stage 2 (two finalists × two jars), six in Stage 3 (three wick options × two), three in Stage 4 (cure at day 7, 14 and 21), six for the customer panel and one spare. At 8% that is 192 g of oil and 2,208 g of wax. You can run a lighter version with twelve jars by dropping the panel, but the panel is the only stage that tests your judgement against someone else's nose.
Can I test a fragrance oil without making a candle?
Only partly. A blotter test on a 15 g trial from ₹68.44 tells you whether the oil matches your brief and whether you like it — genuinely useful, and the reason Stage 1 exists. It tells you nothing about cold throw at 8% in your wax, nothing about which wick opens a pool, nothing about how the profile moves over a 21-day cure, and nothing about discolouration. Those need wax and jars. Treat the blotter as a shortlisting tool, never as qualification.
What fragrance load should I test at?
Test at the load you intend to sell at, and change it only if Stage 2 fails. Both the oil page and the wax page matter: several CSI oils state 6–10% for soy, while Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended and CSI 464 states up to 10%. Work inside the lower of the two figures. Those are formulation limits describing how much oil the wax will hold, not regulatory limits, and raising the load is the last lever to try, not the first.
Should I test the wick and the fragrance at the same time?
No. That is the error the four-stage order exists to prevent. If you change the oil and the wick in one batch and the candle improves, you have learned nothing you can repeat. Stage 2 varies the oil and holds the wick; Stage 3 varies the wick and holds the oil. Each stage has one variable, everything else logged and identical — same wax, same load, same jar, same temperatures, same cure. Three controlled tests teach you more than thirty uncontrolled pours.
What if the oil's flash point is not published?
Ask for the SDS figure before Stage 3 — 56 of CSI's 107 fragrance oil pages state no flash point at all, and a further 32 state only "flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based products rather than a measurement of that oil. Only 18 pages state a measured value, and they range from 85°C on Neroli to 206°C on Vetiver. Since soy waxes commonly specify adding fragrance at 80–90°C, that difference changes your add temperature.
