How to Test Fragrance Oils Before Launching a Candle

How many test candles do I need? Twenty for a proper qualification: 4 in the cold-throw stage, 6 across three wick options, 3 in the cure comparison, 6 for a customer panel, and 1 spare.
What does it cost? ₹5,578.30 of materials — six 15 g trials at ₹560.50, two 50 g finalists at ₹500, 200 g of the winner at ₹1,080, twenty jars at ₹944, 2.5 kg of wax at ₹1,497, three wick options at ₹896.80 and wick stickers at ₹100.
Is it worth it? A 500-candle run of 200g candles in Lavender at an 8% load costs about ₹1,23,507 in materials. The test is 4.5% of that, and it happens before the money is committed.
Why the bottle tells you nothing
The single commonest pre-launch mistake is choosing a fragrance by opening bottles and picking the one that hits hardest. It feels like evidence and it is almost pure noise, for three reasons worth being precise about.
Concentration. The bottle is 100% fragrance oil at room temperature. A candle at an 8% load is 16 g of oil in a 200g candle, and what reaches the room is a fraction of that, released over hours from the surface of a melt pool. You are judging a material at roughly twelve times the concentration it will ever be used at.
Temperature and time. A bottle presents everything at once, so the volatile top notes dominate. A candle presents the top notes briefly and then lives on its base. An oil that is exciting from the bottle and thin in a cured candle is usually one whose character sat entirely in its top — which is why you read the stated pyramid rather than trusting your nose at the bottle. 102 of CSI's 107 fragrance pages state notes, and 88 state a full top / heart / base structure.
Your nose. Three bottles in, olfactory fatigue has set in and you are ranking the order you smelled them in rather than the oils. This is the reason Stage 1 is blind, spaced, and capped at six candidates in a session.
The four stages at a glance
Each stage answers one question, costs more per candidate than the last, and can only be entered by something that passed the one before. Run them in this order and you spend the expensive money on the fewest candidates.

The protocol, step by step
Twenty jars, four to six weeks of calendar time, and one rule that governs all of it: one variable per stage. Everything below is a protocol to run. The outcomes are yours and they will differ with your wax, your wick, your jar diameter and your room.
Three oils worth shortlisting
A Stage 1 shortlist should mix families and include at least one oil whose page warns you about something — because catching that warning in a test is exactly what the test is for. Each card shows every listed pack size against what a 120g test jar at an 8% load consumes: 9.6 g of oil and 110.4 g of wax.

Now the comparison that justifies it. A 500-candle run of 200g candles at an 8% load in the winning oil needs 8 kg of fragrance, 92 kg of wax, 500 jars and 500 wicks: with Lavender at ₹5,221 per kilo, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 per 10 kg, jars at ₹47.20 and Eco Thin wicks at ₹5.90, that is ₹1,23,507 of materials, ₹247.01 a candle. The qualification is 4.5% of that figure and it happens first. Spread across the 500 candles the test adds ₹11.16 each; spread across a first run of 100 it is ₹55.78. Either way it is the cheapest insurance on this page.
The score sheet
One row per jar, filled at the bench rather than from memory. The fields below are the minimum that let you read a result back in a month and know what caused it — and they are the fields a second person would need to reproduce the pour.

Two fields do most of the work. Actual temperatures, because "I aimed for 85°C" is not a record and a five-degree drift is a real variable. And colour against the unscented control, because discolouration is gradual and the only way to see it is side by side with wax that has no oil in it — which costs one extra jar of plain wax and settles a question no product page can answer for your specific wax.
Go, no-go, and what a fail means
A fail is information, not a loss — but only if you know which stage failed, because each one points at a different fix. The table gives the thresholds most makers end up using and the honest next move for each failure. Set your own numbers before you pour; these are a starting point, not a standard.

The ordering of the Stage 3 hot-throw fix is the part most worth internalising. A weak hot throw is far more often a pool that never opened than an oil that cannot perform — fragrance leaves a candle from the surface of the melt pool, so pool area is release area. Check the wick before you blame the oil, and only consider the load after the pool and the cure are both right.
