I Bought a 200 ml Candle Jar — Does That Mean I Should Put 200 g of Wax in It or Will the Actual Wax Weight Be Different?
Aktie
So how much does a 200 ml jar really hold? Worked example: if 200 ml is water to the brim and you leave 1 cm of headspace, you get about 147 to 154 g of finished candle. If CSI's "fill weight 200 ml" already means a fill line, about 172 to 180 g. Plan on about 150 g until you have weighed your own jar.
Is the fragrance oil extra? No. The oil is part of the candle weight. A 150 g candle at 8% is 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax, not 150 g of wax plus 12 g of oil.
How do I find the exact figure? Three steps with a scale: weigh the water the jar holds to your fill line, test-pour wax to the same line, then weigh the cooled candle. Do it on three jars before you buy a hundred.

Four reasons 200 ml is not 200 g of wax
For water, 1 ml weighs about 1 g, so the two numbers feel interchangeable. They stop being interchangeable when you swap water for wax and the brim for a fill line. Four effects are at work, and all push the same way: your candle weighs less than the ml figure on the jar.
1. Brim capacity is not usable capacity
Capacity figures are commonly measured to the brim, filled until the jar would overflow. Nobody pours a candle to the brim. You stop at a fill line below the rim, and the volume above it is volume the listing counted and your candle cannot use. In a straight-sided jar with a 7 cm-deep inside, a 1 cm gap removes about 14% of the brim volume; 1.5 cm removes about 21%. In a jar with a shoulder or threaded neck, such as a lug-cap jar, the loss can be larger: the neck is part of the brim volume and rarely part of the candle.
2. Wax is lighter than water, millilitre for millilitre
Candle wax is less dense than water; it floats. A commonly used candle-maker rule of thumb multiplies the water weight by roughly 0.86 to 0.9 to estimate the wax weight, so wax weighs about 10% to 14% less than water for the same space. It is a rule of thumb, not a specification: no CSI wax page states a density, and the only figure to trust is your scale's after a test pour. The physics, and why hot wax shrinks as it sets, is in the density explainer.
3. Headspace is volume you pay for and leave empty
Headspace is the gap between the wax surface and the rim. Roughly 1 to 1.5 cm is a common rule of thumb: it clears the lid, keeps soot off the lid's underside, and stops a molten pool reaching the rim if the candle is nudged. Your own lid sets the minimum, so measure it. How much gap to leave and how to mark it is the headspace rule.
4. The fragrance oil is inside the candle weight
CSI's convention is load as a percentage of the finished candle's total weight. A 150 g candle at 8% is 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax, not 150 g of wax plus 12 g of oil on top. Change the load and the total stays roughly the same, because the fill line has not moved; only the split changes. Oil's density differs a little from wax's, so confirm with a test pour at your real load. The cost side of moving from 6% to 10% is in I Changed My Fragrance Load From 6% to 10% — Will That Change How Much Wax I Need to Put Into Each Jar?.
The proof that 200 g of wax cannot go in
Run the rule of thumb backwards. 200 g of wax at a factor of 0.9 needs about 222 ml; at 0.86, about 233 ml. That is 11% to 16% more room than a 200 ml jar has even at the brim. In the diagram's straight-sided jar, 200 g of wax would stand 0.8 to 1.1 cm above the rim before you add a gram of oil. If you have ever weighed out the ml figure in grams and found a jug of wax left over, this is why.
What CSI's own 200 ml listings do and do not tell you
CSI sells two families of 200 ml glass jar in stock on 26 September 2026, and two "Fill Weight 200 gm" bamboo-lid listings (clear and amber) that are not. None states an inside diameter or whether its capacity is to the brim or a fill line. We quote them exactly so you can see the gaps.
| Listing | Capacity wording | Dimensions stated | Heat wording | Per jar | Ambiguity to resolve by measuring |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte and 12 in-stock matte, glossy and frosted sisters | "a fill weight of 200 ml" | "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" | "withstand high heat" (no figure) | ₹70.80 at 5 or 10 | "Fill weight" given in ml, not g; brim or fill line not stated; width may be outside; no lid mentioned |
| 200ml Salsa clear, 63 mm lug cap | "The 200ml capacity" | None beyond the 63 mm cap | "withstands the heat of hot wax without cracking or warping" (no figure) | ₹40.12 at 5; ₹29.50 at 50 or 100 | Everything: height, inside diameter, shoulder and neck, fill line |
| 200ml Salsa coloured (Red, Green, Amber, Light Pink, Purple) | "The 200ml capacity" | None beyond the cap | Same wording as clear | ₹62.00 at 5, 50 or 100 | As clear, plus copied text ("clear glass") and handle mix-ups: confirm colour on WhatsApp |
| Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid | "Fill Weight 200 gm" | "H: 8.5 cm x W: 7.5 cm" | None | Out of stock on 26 September 2026 | Not buyable; shown only because it says "200" in grams on a larger jar |
"Fill weight of 200 ml" is ambiguous twice over. "Fill weight" suggests grams of candle; "ml" is a volume; and it does not say brim or fill line. The out-of-stock Bamboo Lid listing says "Fill Weight 200 gm" on a jar listed as 8.5 × 7.5 cm, larger both ways than the 8 × 7 cm family, so two "200" listings describe different jars, the problem the same-ml, different-shape post takes apart.
"Width 7 cm" does not settle the inside either. If 7 cm were the inside diameter, the circle would be 38.48 cm² (π × 3.5²) and a straight inside 7 cm deep would hold about 269 ml, 35% more than the listed 200 ml. If 7 cm is the outside with walls of about 3.5 mm, the inside is about 6.3 cm and holds about 218 ml. The listed 200 ml fits an outside width, a taper, a thicker base or a below-brim figure, and the page does not say which. We do not publish a better number. Measure the inside at the height where the melt pool will sit; why that diameter matters for your wick is in My Candle Jar Holds 200 ml but Has a 7 cm Internal Diameter — Which Measurement Should I Use When Choosing the Wick?.
Worked example: from 200 ml to a finished-candle range
This example uses the Matte family's listed 8 × 7 cm shape, treated as straight-sided. Two assumptions are ours, not the listing's: a glass base of about 1 cm, so the inside is about 7 cm deep; and the 0.86 to 0.9 factor. Every figure below is a worked example.
| Scenario | Water to the brim | Water to your fill line | × 0.86 (low) | × 0.9 (high) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. 200 ml is the brim; 1 cm headspace | 200 g | 171 g | 147 g | 154 g | The common meaning of a capacity figure; our planning case |
| A2. 200 ml is the brim; 1.5 cm headspace | 200 g | 157 g | 135 g | 141 g | A taller lid, or a cautious maker |
| B. 200 ml is already a fill line | more than 200 g | 200 g | 172 g | 180 g | The generous reading of "fill weight 200 ml" |
| What some makers assume | — | — | 200 g of wax | Physically will not fit: needs 222 to 233 ml | |
Read it as a range of about 135 to 180 g, with 147 to 154 g the likeliest band for a straight-sided jar measured to the brim. So we plan on 150 g: inside the likeliest band, the figure CSI's other guides use, and 25% lighter than the 200 g a maker might assume. It is a planning figure, not a label figure.
The wax and oil split at 6%, 8% and 10%
The split is multiplication on the total. CSI 464's page states up to 10%, so all three test loads sit inside it; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 state up to 13%, but a ceiling is a maximum, not a target, and the lower of the wax's and the oil page's stated maximum governs.
| Finished candle | 6% | 8% | 10% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 135 g | 8.1 g oil + 126.9 g wax | 10.8 g oil + 124.2 g wax | 13.5 g oil + 121.5 g wax |
| 150 g | 9 g oil + 141 g wax | 12 g oil + 138 g wax | 15 g oil + 135 g wax |
| 165 g | 9.9 g oil + 155.1 g wax | 13.2 g oil + 151.8 g wax | 16.5 g oil + 148.5 g wax |
| 180 g | 10.8 g oil + 169.2 g wax | 14.4 g oil + 165.6 g wax | 18 g oil + 162 g wax |
Notice two things. Moving from 6% to 10% in a 150 g candle adds 6 g of oil and removes 6 g of wax; the jar needs no more room. And the gap between scenario A2 (135 g) and B (180 g) is 45 g per jar, larger than any load change: the fill line matters more than the load when you order wax.
What one planning candle costs
Worked example, one 150 g candle at 8% in a Matte jar: jar ₹70.80 + 138 g of CSI 464 at the 10 kg price ₹70.02 + 12 g of Jasmine Fragrance Oil at the 1 kg price ₹47.08 + one C2 wick ₹9.44 = ₹197.34, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. Jasmine is only a costing example (its page states "Recommended load up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin"; every size in stock on 26 September 2026). Filled for 200 g at 8%, the wax alone would be 184 g, ₹93.36, and would not fit. A per-candle prep sheet is in My Jar Holds 220 g of Water — How Much Soy Wax and Fragrance Oil Should I Prepare for Each Candle?; the spreadsheet chain in My Candle Jar Supplier Lists Capacity in ml but My Candle Formula Is in grams — How Do I Calculate Exactly How Much Wax Each Jar Needs?.
The 3-step weighing method: water-fill, test pour, weigh
This is the method we would use on any new jar, ours included: water-fill (how much space you really have), test pour (how much candle that space takes) and weigh (what the cooled, topped-up candle weighs). Do it on three jars from the same pack, because mass-produced glass varies between pieces and batches.
What to buy to measure it: jars, scale, wax, wicks
Five items in the order the method uses them, chosen on what their pages state, price and stock on 26 September 2026, not on performance: CSI has no burn data for these jars.
| Pack | Price | Per jar | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pack of 5 | ₹354.00 | ₹70.80 | one measurement run: 3 jars water-filled, all 5 test-poured and wicked C1/C2 |
| Pack of 10 | ₹708.00 | ₹70.80 | one 10-candle test run (fill weight plus C1/C2 burn tests) |
| Pack | Price | Per jar | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 Pcs | ₹200.60 | ₹40.12 | one measurement run |
| 50 Pcs | ₹1,475.00 | ₹29.50 | half a first production run, after measuring |
| 100 Pcs | ₹2,950.00 | ₹29.50 | a 100-candle run, after measuring |
| Pack | Price | Per unit | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | ₹354.00 | ₹354.00 | every water-fill, test pour and finished-candle weighing |
| Size | Price | Per gram | Candles at 138 g wax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹260.00 | ₹0.52 | 3 candles at 138 g of wax (150 g at 8%) |
| 1 kg | ₹507.40 | ₹0.51 | 7 candles: the five-jar measurement run with room for pour loss |
| 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | ₹0.51 | 36 candles |
| 10 kg | ₹5,074.00 | ₹0.51 | 72 candles |
| Pack | Price | Per wick | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin (C1) / 10 Wicks | ₹59.00 | ₹5.90 | one side of a C1-vs-C2 bracket |
| Thick (C2) / 10 Wicks | ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 | the other side of the bracket |
| Thin (C1) / 100 Wicks | ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 | 100 candles, once C1 has won |
| Thick (C2) / 100 Wicks | ₹944.00 | ₹9.44 | 100 candles, once C2 has won |
Measure before you buy 100: a costed plan
Two stages: a small kit that answers the fill-weight question, then a 100-candle order sized from your weighings. Prices are CSI live pricing on 26 September 2026; the plan is our judgement; costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
| Item | Buy | Price | What it does in the plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte Glass Jar (or any in-stock 8 × 7 cm sister) | Pack of 5 | ₹354.00 | 3 jars water-filled; all 5 test-poured, wicked C1/C2 and burn-tested |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | 1 | ₹354.00 | Every reading in the method; skip if you own one |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | Five 150 g candles use 690 g of wax; the rest covers pitcher loss and top-ups |
| Eco C1 + Eco C2 | 10 + 10 | ₹153.40 | Wicks for all five test jars, bracketed |
| Your fragrance oil | 60 g | already owned | 12 g per jar at 8%; if buying, 100 g of Jasmine is ₹430.00 and 60 g of it is worth ₹258.00 |
| Total new spend | ₹1,368.80 | ₹1,014.80 without the scale |
The kit consumes five jars (₹354.00) and about 690 g of wax (₹350.11 at the 1 kg price); everything else is left over for production. If you are choosing between families, measure both: swap in a 5 Pcs Salsa clear pack and the kit is ₹1,215.40; buy both packs and it is ₹1,569.40. For comparison, 100 Matte jars bought blind are ₹7,080.00, 5.2 times the measurement kit, and the jars are the smallest part of the risk.
What assuming 200 g would have cost you
Suppose you had ordered for 100 candles of 200 g at 8%: 18.4 kg of wax and 1.6 kg of oil. If the jar really holds a 150 g candle, you needed 13.8 kg and 1.2 kg. Worked example at CSI 464's 10 kg price and Jasmine's 1 kg price: the surplus wax is worth ₹2,334.04, the surplus oil ₹1,569.20, together ₹3,903.24 of material bought for candles that will not fit. It keeps, but it is cash parked in the wrong place before a festival. The larger cost is a price and label built on "200 g" for a 150 g candle.
| Item | Needed | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matte 200 ml jars | 100 | 10 packs of 10 | ₹7,080.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 13.8 kg (100 × 138 g) | 10 kg + 5 kg | ₹7,611.00 |
| Fragrance oil (Jasmine as the example) | 1.2 kg (100 × 12 g) | 1 kg + 500 g | ₹5,884.00 |
| Wicks (C2 as the example; use your bracket winner) | 100 | Thick (C2) / 100 | ₹944.00 |
| Total | 100 candles | 1.2 kg wax and 300 g oil spare | ₹21,519.00 |
With 100 Salsa clear jars at ₹29.50 each instead, the same order is ₹17,389.00 (₹173.89 per candle), but only if your Salsa test pour also lands near 150 g; lug-cap jars with a neck often hold less, so weigh before you swap. The spare wax covers pitcher residue, top-ups and a few re-pours. Many makers let soy candles cure for about two weeks before sale (common practice, not a rule); many CSI oil pages (25 of 102) state a 48 to 72 hour cure before burn testing. If delivery runs late, compress the burn test, not the weighing: a hundred candles poured to the wrong fill line cannot be fixed before the festival.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wax, wicks and scale named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you our own 200 ml listings do not state an inside diameter or a fill line, that one of them calls a volume a "fill weight", and that you should buy five jars before a hundred. That is deliberate: a maker who weighs first reorders the right quantity.
Every price and per-jar figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack shown in a pick table is in stock on that date, and the out-of-stock colours and listings are named as such. Capacity, dimension and heat wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.
The 0.86 to 0.9 density factor and the 1 to 1.5 cm headspace are candle-maker rules of thumb; the 1 cm glass base, 0.35 cm wall and straight sides in the worked example are illustrative assumptions; the 150 g planning figure and the two-stage plan are editorial judgement.
