Formulation · Staged elimination
Thirty oils cannot all get a full burn test, and they do not need one. Each stage costs more per oil than the last, so each stage should see fewer oils: strips for thirty, cold-throw pots for fifteen, full hot-throw pairs for eight, and a launch of five.
₹6,067.25
lowest materials cost for stages 2 and 3 (up to ₹7,493.97 depending on which eight reach the candle stage), against ₹19,854.82 to burn-test all 30 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I narrow 30 fragrance samples down to 5? In three stages that get more expensive per oil: blind strips for all 30 (keep 15), 50 g cold-throw pots for 15 (keep 8), and two 200 g hot-throw candles each for 8 (launch 5). See the sequence.

Why not burn-test all 30? Because it costs ₹19,854.82 in materials and sixty burns. The staged route costs ₹6,067.25–₹7,493.97 and sixteen burns, and the oils it drops early are the ones that would have failed anyway.

Is a 15 g sample enough for testing? For strips and a cold-throw pot, yes: a 50 g pot at 8% uses 4 g, leaving 11 g. It is not enough for a fair hot-throw pair of 200 g candles (32 g). Buy the 50 g for finalists. See stage costs.

Does CSI sell a 30-fragrance sample pack? No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack or discovery set. Build your own from 15 g sizes — 51 oils have one in stock, and 30 of them cost ₹3,211.36 together. Ask on WhatsApp for help choosing.
The short answer
Stage 1: Blind strips at 0 min, 2 h, 24 h for all 30 · reject on character and brand fit only · cost: your samples.
Stage 2: One 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar per oil at 8% (4 g oil, 46 g wax), no wick · 15 oils · ₹1,088.31 in jars and wax.
Stage 3: Two 200 g candles at 8% per finalist from a 50 g bottle · 8 oils · ₹4,978.94–₹6,405.66. Launch 5. How to keep those candles identical.
30 samples to 5 launches — each stage costs more per oil, so fewer oils reach it 30 · Strips sunk: your samples 15 · Cold pots ₹1,088.31 8 · Hot pairs ₹4,978.94–₹6,405.66 5 · Launch Taking all 30 straight to full candle pairs: ₹19,854.82. Staging it: ₹6,067.25–₹7,493.97, plus the samples you already hold.
Bar width is the number of oils at each stage. Strips cost nothing beyond the samples. Cold-throw pots cost ₹1,088.31 for fifteen oils in 50 g jars with no wicks. The hot-throw stage is where the money goes — a 50 g bottle, two jars, two wicks and 368 g of wax per finalist — so only eight oils get there. The range depends on which eight survive.
Straight answer
I have 30 fragrance samples but only want to launch five candles — what testing sequence can eliminate poor performers before I waste wax and wicks on full burn tests?
Use a three-stage elimination in which each stage costs more per oil, so fewer oils reach it. Stage 1, strips: smell all 30 on coded paper strips at 0 minutes, 2 hours and 24 hours, blind, and keep the 15 that fit your range. It costs nothing beyond the samples, and it may reject on character only. Stage 2, cold-throw pots: pour one 50 g pot per oil at 8% (4 g oil, 46 g wax) — no wick needed — cure them together, and keep the 8 with the best cold throw and cleanest colour. Fifteen 50 g velvet jars and the wax cost ₹1,088.31. Stage 3, hot-throw pairs: buy the 50 g of each finalist (a 15 g sample cannot fill two 200 g candles at 8%), pour two candles each with your production wick and jar, burn them blind at the same cure age, and launch the best 5. That stage costs ₹4,978.94–₹6,405.66 depending on which eight survive. Burning all 30 as full candle pairs would cost ₹19,854.82 and sixty burns.
One line: a strip may reject but never select; only the hot-throw pair can put an oil on your shelf.
CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack, so a 30-oil set is one you build. 51 oils are in stock in 15 g, from ₹68.44 (Eucalyptus Spearmint) to ₹187.62. The 30 used on this page — the first 30 with a 15 g in CSI's best-selling sort — cost ₹3,211.36 together.

The three-stage sequence

Every stage has one job: remove the oils that cannot win, as cheaply as possible.

The mistake most makers make with a big sample set is not testing too little. It is testing everything the same way. They pour thirty full candles, cure them, burn them over three weekends, and by the twentieth burn their nose, their patience and their scoring have all drifted. The oils tested last are judged by a different person from the oils tested first. A staged sequence fixes that by letting cheap, fast tests remove the obvious rejects so the expensive, slow test is spent on a short list you can judge carefully.

The elimination plan · 30 samples in, 5 launches out
Three stages, each with one job
Stage Oils in → out What it measures Material per oil What it may NOT decide
1 · Blind strips 30 → 15 Character, brand fit, dry-down over 24 hours A drop of oil Strength in wax; it only rejects on fit
2 · Cold-throw pots 15 → 8 Cold throw at 8% after cure; colour in your wax 4 g oil + 46 g wax + one 50 g jar Hot throw; wick behaviour
3 · Hot-throw pairs 8 → 5 Hot throw in a room, pool, soot, flame, at the same cure age 32 g oil (a 50 g bottle) + 368 g wax + 2 wicks + 2 jars Nothing — this stage selects

Notice what each stage is not allowed to do. The strip stage cannot reject an oil for being weak — neat strength does not predict candle strength, as My Fragrance Oil Is Extremely Strong Neat but Weak in the Finished Candle — Why Does Bottle Strength Not Predict Candle Performance? explains. The cold-throw stage cannot reject an oil for poor hot throw, because it has not burned. Only stage 3 can put an oil on your shelf. Write these limits on your score sheet before you start, and hold to them when a favourite does badly or a surprise does well.

1
Code every sampleRelabel the 30 bottles with numbers and have someone else keep the key. From here on, nobody scoring knows which oil is which. Blind scoring is the single biggest improvement you can make to any fragrance comparison — Customers Say My Candle Is Weak but I Can Smell It Clearly in My Workshop — How Do I Create a More Objective Hot-Throw Testing Method? covers it in detail.
2
Stage 1 — strips, in batches of tenDip coded strips to the same depth. Smell ten at a time, not thirty, with fresh air between batches; after about a dozen scents most noses stop discriminating well. Score brand fit and character at 0 minutes, 2 hours and 24 hours. Keep 15. Reject only on "this does not belong in my range".
3
Stage 2 — pour the 15 cold-throw pots in one sessionMelt one wax batch, split it, and pour one 50 g pot per oil at 8%: 4 g oil and 46 g wax. No wick — cold throw does not need one. Add one unfragranced pot as a colour control. If you use CSI 464, CSI's guidance is 80–90°C (confirm on the product page); otherwise follow the wax maker's instructions.
4
Cure the pots together, then scoreClose the pots and store them together. Score cold throw and colour at the same checkpoints — for example 48 hours and 7 days, labelled working checkpoints. Keep 8. If two oils tie, keep both and take nine to stage 3 rather than guess.
5
Stage 3 — buy 50 g of each finalist and pour pairsBuy the 50 g size of each finalist and pour two 200 g candles per oil in your production jar with your production wick, all on one day from one wax batch. I Want to Compare 20 Candle Fragrance Oils Objectively — How Do I Create Identical Test Candles so Wax Quantity, Fragrance Load, Wick, Jar and Cure Time Remain Controlled? lists every variable to hold constant.
6
Burn blind, score, launch fiveBurn each candle for the same time (for example 4 hours, a working choice) in the same room, one at a time. Score throw at the door and across the room, and note the pool, soot and flame. Launch the five best; keep notes on the other three as backups.
The cold-throw pot is also your colour test
A pot that has turned noticeably darker than the unfragranced control after cure has told you something a strip never could. Colour tendency per oil is not in our data, so this is the cheapest point at which to find out. If a finalist discolours but performs, you can still launch it in a coloured or opaque vessel. My Custom Blend Performs Well at 8% but One Component Discolours the Wax — How Do I Identify Which Fragrance Is Causing It? covers tracing discolouration in blends.

Building the 30-sample basket

If you already hold 30 samples, skip ahead to the costs. If you are building the set from CSI, you are building it from the 15 g size, because there is no fragrance sample pack, discovery set or trial pack in the catalogue. Fifty-one oils had a 15 g in stock on the pull date. The table shows the 30 used on this page — simply the first 30 with a 15 g in CSI's best-selling sort — with their 15 g and 50 g prices. Your 30 should reflect your range, not ours.

Two things stand out. First, the 15 g is the most expensive way to buy fragrance by the gram — across the catalogue it carries a median 23.1% premium over the same oil's 100 g — but for elimination it is the right size, because most of these oils will never be bought again. Second, the 50 g column is what stage 3 costs in oil. The eight cheapest 50 g sizes in this basket total ₹1,681.48, the eight dearest ₹3,108.20. You will not know which eight you need until stage 2 is done, which is exactly why the 50 g purchase waits. I'm Launching 10 Candle Fragrances — How Do I Decide Which Scents Deserve 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Purchases and Which Should Remain in Smaller Trial Sizes? picks up from there: which launch scents deserve kilo purchases.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. It would suit us if you bought the 50 g of all thirty up front "to save a second order". Across this basket that is ₹8,639.86 of oil, of which roughly ₹5,531.66 to ₹6,958.38 would go to oils that fail stage 2. A second small order for eight 50 g bottles is the cheaper plan. Wait for the pots.

What each stage costs

The table prices stages 2 and 3 with real pack sizes. Stage 2 pots are Heart Cutout Velvet Jars with a published 50 g wax capacity, at ₹45.00 each (fifteen = a pack of 10 at ₹450.00 plus a pack of 5 at ₹225.00). Wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo. Stage 3 wicks are Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (a 20-pack at ₹118.00) and jars are White Matte Glass Jars in packs of 5 at ₹354.00.

Test burns 16 × 4 h = 64 h 60 × 4 h = 240 h
Materials total ₹6,067.25–₹7,493.97 ₹19,854.82

The staged route saves between ₹12,360.85 and ₹13,787.57 in materials and 176 hours of burning at the example 4 hours a burn. The time matters as much as the money: sixty test burns is weeks of evenings, and scoring quality falls with every one. Both columns exclude the 30 samples themselves (₹3,211.36 if bought from CSI), which both routes need. The costs exclude labour and your own time, and nothing here is packaging or GST.

Testing the finalists from what is left of the 15 g. After a 4 g pot, each sample has 11 g left. It is tempting to pour one candle from it and skip the 50 g. But 11 g at 8% makes a 137.5 g candle, not your 200 g product, and one candle cannot tell you whether a result is the oil or the candle. For the stage that selects your launch, use the real jar, the real fill and a pair. The 50 g is the cost of a fair decision.
The CSI principle
Cheap tests reject. Expensive tests select.
Let the strip and the cold pot remove the oils that cannot win, and spend wax, wicks, jars and burn hours only on the eight that might. A launch chosen from sixteen careful burns beats a launch chosen from sixty tired ones.

Rules that keep elimination fair

An elimination is only as good as the rules you wrote before the first strip.

Staged tests have one weakness: an oil removed early never gets a second chance, so an unfair early stage costs you a potential bestseller. Four rules keep the early stages honest. Blind coding at every stage. Batches of ten at the strip stage with fresh air between. One pour session and one cure schedule for all pots, so none is judged younger than another — I'm Comparing Two Fragrance Oils — Should I Burn-Test Them at Exactly the Same Cure Age to Make the Comparison Fair? explains why cure age must match. And ties go through: if the eighth and ninth pots are indistinguishable, take nine to stage 3.

Hold the load at 8% for everything. The point of this sequence is to compare oils, not loads, and changing both at once makes the comparison meaningless. Once your five are chosen, you can tune each one's load separately — the faster method for 6/8/10% across many scents and How Do I Find the Lowest Fragrance Load That Still Gives Strong Hot Throw so I'm Not Wasting Expensive Fragrance Oil? cover that next step. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%; those are the wax makers' stated maximums, not targets.

Thirty oils deserve a fair hearing. Only eight deserve a full trial.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We do not list a fragrance sample pack, discovery set or trial pack, and this page does not pretend otherwise: the 30-oil basket is built from individual 15 g sizes. We publish no throw data for any oil, so the picks are practical inclusions, not predictions of winners.

Oil, wax and jar prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; Eco Candle Wicks and White Matte Glass Jar prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with the 20-wick pack from the 25 September wick pull. Stage costs (₹1,088.31 for stage 2; ₹4,978.94–₹6,405.66 for stage 3) and the unstaged total (₹19,854.82) are plain arithmetic on those prices.

The 30 → 15 → 8 → 5 funnel, the 8% load, the 50 g pot, the cure checkpoints and the four-hour burn are working assumptions for a small candle business. Adjust them to your range, write them down before you start, and keep them fixed through the elimination. Frequently asked questions

How do I test a lot of candle fragrance samples quickly?
In stages that get more expensive per oil. Smell all of them blind on strips and keep half. Pour one 50 g cold-throw pot of each survivor at 8% and keep the best eight after cure. Burn two full candles of each finalist. Only the last stage selects.
How many fragrance oils should I burn test before launching?
About one and a half times as many as you plan to launch, after cheaper stages have removed the rest. Here, eight finalists for five launches, as two candles each — sixteen burns rather than sixty.
Can I test cold throw without a wick?
Yes. Cold throw is the scent of the unlit candle, so a small lidded pot of fragranced wax at your load, cured alongside the others, is enough. It also shows you colour after cure. It cannot tell you anything about hot throw.
How much fragrance oil do I need to test one scent?
At 8%: a 50 g pot uses 4 g, an 85 g tin 6.8 g, and a 200 g candle 16 g. A fair hot-throw pair of 200 g candles needs 32 g, which is why finalists need a 50 g bottle rather than a 15 g sample.
Does CSI sell fragrance sample packs?
No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack, trial pack or discovery set. Build one from 15 g sizes — 51 oils have one in stock, and a 30-oil set like the one on this page costs ₹3,211.36. We can help you choose on WhatsApp.
Should I test fragrance load at the same time as choosing scents?
No. Compare oils at one load (8% here) first, then tune the load for your chosen five. Changing oil and load at once makes it impossible to tell which caused a result. I'm Launching 20 Candle Fragrances — Do I Need to Test 6%, 8% and 10% for Every Scent or Is There a Faster Formulation Method? covers load tuning across many scents.
