I’m Switching to a New Jar with the Same 200 g Capacity but a Different Diameter — Do I Need to Repeat Wick Testing?
Aktie
What do I buy for a wider jar? In our worked example (7.0 → 8.0 cm inside, 30.6% more pool), the owned C2 becomes the low rung and the only new pack is Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00). Six test candles instead of nine.
And for a narrower jar? 7.0 → 6.0 cm inside (26.5% less pool): the owned C2 becomes the upper rung and the new pack is Eco C1 20 (₹118.00), unless you already hold C1.
How much does re-use save? Against a full new ladder from nothing (₹332.40 in wicks and nine candles), the wider-jar top-up saves ₹212.40 in wick packs and three candles (₹537.78 of materials). It never saves the full-life test.

What a new diameter changes, and what it doesn't
Two jars that both hold 200 g can ask completely different things of a wick. In a wider jar the wax spreads thinner over more surface; in a narrower one it stacks deeper over less. At the 0.88 midpoint of the common 0.86–0.9 water-to-wax rule of thumb, 200 g stands about 5.91 cm deep in a 7.0 cm jar, 4.52 cm in an 8.0 cm jar and 8.04 cm in a 6.0 cm jar: worked-example geometry, confirmed only by a weighed pour. The physics of why same-capacity jars need their own wick is the same-capacity, different-diameter post; this page owns what to buy because of it.
| Jar | Pool area | vs old jar | Approx. depth | First-burn time (very rough) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old, 7.0 cm inside (approved on C2) | 38.48 cm² | — | 5.91 cm | about 2.8 h |
| New, wider, 8.0 cm inside | 50.27 cm² | 30.6% more | 4.52 cm | about 3.2 h |
| New, narrower, 6.0 cm inside | 28.27 cm² | 26.5% less | 8.04 cm | shorter; but deeper wax to burn through |
The grams are the one thing the switch leaves alone, and grams decide your oil and wax quantities, not your wick. That split (diameter picks the wicks, weight sets the wax, oil and burn days) is the 7.5 cm, 200 g post; the two-jars-of-equal-weight comparison, with two separate buy lists, is the 6.5 vs 8 cm post. A wick that follows grams rather than area is the classic mistake when a candle changes jar: see why you can't scale a wick by weight.
The re-use inventory: shelf, records, wicks
A jar change looks like starting over. It isn't. Most of what you paid for the first time, in money and in testing, is still valid, and the job is to separate it cleanly from the one thing that isn't.
| Item | Carries over? | Why | Purchase consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oil stock (same oil, same lot) | Yes | Same oil, same 8% load; the new ladder must use it so the jar is the only change | None, if 96 g is on the shelf |
| Wax stock (same wax) | Yes | Same wax; CSI 464 is flat per gram, nothing to gain by buying more | None, if 1,104 g is on the shelf |
| Records: load, cure, pour temperature, mixing | Yes | None of them depends on the diameter | None |
| Tools: scale, thermometer, centring devices, trimmer | Yes | A centring device may need a longer bar for a wider mouth | Usually none |
| The old approved wick (C2 here) | As a rung | It is the documented answer for the old pool; in the new jar it is the near-side rung | Three from stock; C2 20 only if stock is committed |
| Other rungs left from the old ladder | As rungs, if the direction fits | A wider jar re-uses nothing smaller than C2; a narrower one re-uses C1 if you kept it | Count before ordering |
| The approval itself | No | Approval is for jar + wax + oil + load + wick together | A new full-life test, three candles per rung |
| Session length and burn calendar | No | A wider pool needs longer sessions; a deeper one more of them | Re-plan from the new jar's first session |
| Jars | No | That is the change | Six new jars for the test |
Two of those rows decide the order: which wicks are already on your shelf, and in which direction the pool moved. The full scope of what to repeat on a 7 → 8 cm move, time and cost included, is the 7 to 8 cm retest post.
Centre the new ladder on the pool-area change
How far the new ladder moves from the old wick depends on how far the pool moved. The bands below are our judgement, a buying rule readable off two measurements, not a burn prediction; CSI has no measured wick data for any jar.
| Pool-area change | New ladder | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 10% either way | Old wick + one neighbour: a confirmation, not a ladder | See the 5 mm post |
| About 10% to 40% larger (7.0 → 8.0 cm: 30.6%) | Old wick as the low rung + the next rung up | From C2: Cotton Braided 10 (₹120.00) |
| About 10% to 40% smaller (7.0 → 6.0 cm: 26.5%) | Old wick as the upper rung + the next rung down | From C2: C1 20 (₹118.00), if not already owned |
| More than about 40% either way | Treat it as a new jar: full three-rung ladder, pairs if wide | The hub buy list; re-use whatever rungs you own |
Why keep the old wick in the ladder at all, instead of jumping straight to the next rung? Because a ladder only closes when the chosen wick has a documented fail on each side (the bracket-closure rule). In a wider jar, C2 is the most likely fail-low, and it is already in your hand. If C2 surprises you and passes in the new jar too, you have learned that without buying anything.
What about the rung beyond? In the wider case, C1 single is skipped: it was the right size for nothing larger than your old jar, and a wider pool only moves it further from the answer. The pairs (2 × C1, 2 × C2, 25.13 cm² per wick at 8.0 cm) are held back unless Cotton Braided, CSI's top tabbed rung, still leaves a ring; their wicks are cheap and possibly on your shelf, but each arm is three more candles. In the narrower case, Cotton Braided is the wrong direction. If C1 is still too strong, CSI's one wick described for a smaller diameter is the untabbed Eco Candle Wicks Loose ("2 inch diameters"); the braided rolls are unsized, and anything between is a question for WhatsApp.
The top-up order vs a full new ladder
| Item | Count needed | Source | Price | Per unit | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco C2 (old wick, low rung) | 3 | your stock (or C2 20) | from stock (or ₹188.80) | ₹9.44 | — |
| Cotton Braided (missing rung) | 3 | 10-pack | ₹120.00 | ₹12.00 | 7 |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom | 96 g | your stock; or 100 g + 50 g | from stock (or ₹770.00) | ₹5.00 per g | 54 g if bought; a 100 g alone leaves 4 g |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1,104 g | your stock; or 1 kg + 500 g | from stock (or ₹767.40) | ₹0.51 per g | 396 g if bought |
| New jars for the test | 6 | yours; if Salsa, two 5-piece packs | yours (or ₹401.20) | ₹40.12 | 4 if Salsa |
| New wick cash | 6 candles | one pack | ₹120.00 | — | ₹308.80 if C2 must be bought |
With Salsa jars as the new vessel, the cash order is ₹521.20: the Cotton Braided 10-pack and ten jars. The six candles consume ₹1,104.49 of materials (C2 candles ₹182.80, Cotton Braided ₹185.36 each, excluding jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST).
| Line | Re-use, wider jar | Re-use, narrower jar | Full new ladder from nothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rungs | C2 (owned) + Cotton Braided | C1 + C2 (owned) | C1 + C2 + Cotton Braided |
| New wick packs | Cotton Braided 10: ₹120.00 | C1 20: ₹118.00 | C1 20 + C2 10 + Cotton Braided 10: ₹332.40 |
| Candles and new jars | 6 | 6 | 9 |
| Materials consumed | ₹1,104.49 | ₹1,086.19 | ₹1,642.27 |
| Oil for the test | 96 g | 96 g | 144 g |
The wick saving is real but small (₹212.40 on the wider move); the bigger saving is three fewer candles, three fewer jars and three fewer full-life burns to watch. The per-candle wick cost hardly moves: a C1 candle is ₹179.26, a Cotton Braided one ₹185.36. As always, the candles are the cost of a test, not the wicks.
Pour the re-use ladder
| C2 in the new jar | Cotton Braided | Reading | What to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rings at burn 3 | Clean, calm through full life | Cotton Braided for the new jar; C2 stays the old jar's wick | Production Cotton Braided; keep C2 for the old jar |
| Passes, full life | Runs hot or fast | The old wick still works here | No new wick SKU: keep buying C2 for both jars |
| Rings | Also rings | Past single-wick range for this oil | A double-wick arm, 2 × C1 or 2 × C2, three candles (the double-arm post) |
| Rings | Runs hot | Between CSI rungs | Ask us; check centring and session length first |
Two jars, one shelf: production after approval
If you keep selling the old jar, you may now stock two approved wicks. Size each from its own jar's production: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance), with 5% as our worked-example allowance. In the example, 150 new-jar candles a month on Cotton Braided and 100 old-jar candles on C2:
| Line | Quantity | Packs | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided, new jar | 157.5 → 158 | 100 + 50 + 10 | ₹1,920.00 |
| C2, old jar | 105 | 100 + 10 | ₹1,038.40 |
| Wicks, both jars | 270 | five packs | ₹2,958.40 |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom, both jars | 4,000 g | 4 × 1 kg | ₹19,368.00 at the 1 kg per-gram price |
| For scale: 250 Salsa jars, if that is the new jar's 150 plus 100 more | 250 | 3 × 50 + 1 × 100 | ₹7,375.00 |
The oil and wax lines stay single: same oil, same wax, one stock. Only the wick line splits, and only if the new jar approved a different wick. When several jars share CSI's few rungs, your stock is the union of the approved wicks, not one range per jar (the three-jar stock map); whether settling on one diameter would shrink that list is the standardisation post.
Reorder points and safety stock per wick follow the hub's method (the hub's production section); CSI dispatches from Pune and publishes no lead times or stock depth, so confirm dispatch on WhatsApp before a large run.
What to buy, and what to skip
Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 1 October 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candle counts use 16 g per 200 g candle and 12 g per 150 g candle.

Skip for this order: a full new three-pack ladder (₹332.40) if your shelf already holds the old wick. Steel Wick Holder (₹250.00 for 5): only if Cotton Braided rings and you open a double-wick arm. The coloured 200 ml Salsa jars (₹310.00 for 5, ₹62.00 each): the same unstated dimensions at more per jar than the clear listing; choose them for colour, not for the test. Performance Wooden Wicks (₹590.00 for 10): changing jar and wick type together tests two things at once.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wicks, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to re-use what you own instead of buying a new ladder, that our "200" jar listings state ml rather than grams, that the 200 ml Salsa page gives no dimensions, and that a Salsa 50-pack can wait until the wick passes.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
The 7.0, 8.0 and 6.0 cm inside diameters, the depth estimates, the pool-change bands, the old C2 approval, the production months and the 5% allowance are worked examples or editorial judgement; the water-to-wax factor and first-burn times are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The 7.0, 8.0 and 6.0 cm inside diameters, the old C2 approval, the depth estimates (at 0.88 g per ml, the midpoint of the 0.86–0.9 rule of thumb), the pool-change bands, the 150- and 100-candle months and the 5% allowance are worked-example assumptions; pool area = π r² on inside radii. CSI 464 "up to 10%" governs over Japanese Cherry Blossom's "6-13% for candles" (the lower ceiling applies); both are formulation limits, not regulatory ones. First-burn times are commonly cited rules of thumb. Costs exclude jars (unless stated), labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
