Quick answers — read this first
Should I reduce the load, raise the price or accept a lower margin on my oud candle? In that order, and stop at the first one that works. Test a lower load first: on a perfume-grade oud the oil is the costliest line, and if a blind burn test shows 8% matches 10%, you keep the candle and its price and save money. Only if the throw drops, raise the price. Accept a lower margin only on purpose, as a flagship that anchors your range, with a cap and a review date.

What is each option worth? Worked example: a 200 g candle with CSI's Amber Oud Royal at 10% costs ₹515.22 and sells at ₹1,199.00, leaving ₹553.78 after ₹130.00 of selling costs. Cutting to 8% saves ₹44.16 a candle (₹42,393.60 a year at 80 a month); to 7%, ₹66.24. Raising the price to ₹1,299.00 adds ₹100.00 a candle (₹553.78 → ₹653.78) if sales hold.

How many sales can a price rise lose? At ₹1,299.00, you match today's contribution with 67.76 candles a month, so you can lose about 12.24 of 80 sales (15.3%) before the rise costs you. Lose 10 (an implied elasticity of 1.50, worked example) and you are ₹1,462.20 a month better off; lose 20 and you are ₹5,075.60 a month worse.

When is a lower margin acceptable? When the oud candle earns its keep in other ways you can measure: it brings buyers who add another candle, anchors your range's premium end, or wins gift orders. In the worked example it falls ₹45.72 a candle short of a 50% target, ₹3,657.60 a month; if a quarter of oud buyers add a companion candle worth ₹380.00, that covers it. If they do not, it is just a subsidy.
The short answer
Order: 1. test a lower load; 2. if throw drops, raise the price; 3. accept a lower margin only as a deliberate, capped flagship.
Load (worked): Amber Oud Royal 10% → 8% saves ₹44.16 a candle, ₹42,393.60 a year at 80 a month; the nine-candle test costs ₹5,606.64 and pays back in about 1.6 months.
Price (worked): ₹1,199.00 → ₹1,299.00 adds ₹100.00 a candle; it beats today unless you lose more than 12.24 of 80 sales a month (15.3%).
Margin (worked): today 46.2% of price against a 50% target: ₹45.72 a candle short, ₹43,891.20 a year. Carry it only if you can show what the oud brings in.
Keep the oud: which lever, in which order Worked example: 200 g candle, Amber Oud Royal at 10%, ₹1,199.00 price, 80 sold a month. CSI live prices, 4 October 2026; other inputs labelled. Today: 10% load, ₹1,199.00 COGS ₹515.22 · contribution ₹553.78 (46.2%) 1. Test a lower load first 3 candles each at 10%, 8%, 7%: ₹5,606.64 Same wax, jar, wick; blind, full-life burns throw holds Done: cut the load 8%: ₹44.16 a candle ₹42,393.60 a year 7%: ₹66.24 a candle throw drops 2. Raise the price ₹1,299.00: contribution ₹653.78 a candle beats today unless you lose over 12.24 of 80 a month sales fall further 3. Accept a lower margin, deliberately only as a flagship that anchors the range cap the shortfall: ₹3,657.60 a month vs a 50% target set a review date; measure what it pulls in Or change the oud White Royal Oud at 10%: COGS ₹444.48, ₹70.74 less a new scent: full retest The cheapest lever is the one your customer never sees: test the load before you touch the price, and price before you give margin away. Solid boxes: the sequence. Dashed: the fall-backs. Loads are test rungs, not CSI claims.
The sequence for an expensive oud you want to keep. The load test comes first because the customer never sees it; a price rise comes second because it is visible but reversible; a lower margin comes last and only on purpose. Straight answer
I want to keep an expensive oud candle in my range. Should I reduce its fragrance load, increase its selling price or accept a lower margin?
Work through them in that order, and stop at the first that works. First, test a lower load. On a perfume-grade oud the fragrance is the single costliest line, so every two points of load is worth a lot (₹46.56 a 200 g candle on Amber Oud Royal), and if a blind, full-life burn test says 8% matches 10%, nothing your customer sees changes: same scent, same jar, same price, ₹44.16 more per candle. If the throw drops, raise the price. Work out how many sales the rise can lose before it earns less than today (here about 12.24 of 80 a month at ₹1,299.00) and test it on one channel. Accept a lower margin last, and only deliberately: as a flagship that anchors your premium end, with the shortfall written down (₹3,657.60 a month here), a cap, and a date to review whether it is pulling in other sales. What not to do is drift into the third option by default, or cut the load without a test and quietly sell a weaker candle at a premium price.
One line: cut what the customer cannot see, then price what they can, and give margin away only on purpose.
Testing a lower oud load? Three candles each at 10%, 8% and 7% in a 200 g candle use 150 g of oil: two 100 g bottles of Amber Oud Royal (₹2,598.00) leave 50 g spare. For White Royal Oud, two 100 g bottles cost ₹1,620.00. Both in stock in every size on 4 October 2026.

The oud candle in rupees

Before choosing a lever, see which line of the candle the oud really is.

A worked premium candle: 200 g filled weight with CSI's Amber Oud Royal at 10%, the page's stated candle figure, in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, with one Eco C2 wick, a premium jar and a rigid box (your own supplier's figures, labelled). It sells at ₹1,199.00; courier, gateway and packing take ₹130.00 (worked examples throughout; use your own). The same candle at 8% and 7% sits alongside, so you can see what option 1 does to the bill.

At 10% the oud is 45.2% of the candle, more than jar, box and wax put together. That is the shape of any perfume-grade candle, and it is why the load is the first lever: the line you would cut is the biggest one. Today the candle leaves ₹553.78, 46.2% of the price, against a range target of 50% (a worked judgement; set your own). The gap to target is ₹45.72 a candle, ₹3,657.60 a month at 80 candles.

Oud per 200 g candle at 6%, 8% and 10% · three CSI ouds
1 kg prices · 12 g, 16 g, 20 g · two load points = 4 g
Oil Grade 1 kg 6% 8% 10% Two load points
Amber Oud Royal perfume-grade ₹11,640.00 ₹139.68 ₹186.24 ₹232.80 ₹46.56
White Royal Oud candle-grade premium ₹8,103.00 ₹97.24 ₹129.65 ₹162.06 ₹32.41
Woody Oud candle-grade ₹4,531.20 ₹54.37 ₹72.50 ₹90.62 ₹18.12

The load lever scales with the oil's price. Two points of Amber Oud Royal are worth ₹46.56 a candle; two points of Woody Oud, ₹18.12. On a cheap oil a load test is a nice-to-have; on a perfume-grade oud it is the most valuable afternoon of testing in your range. Whether your oud is really dearer than your other scents, and whether it should share their price at all, is the oud-against-lavender pricing post; this page assumes you have decided to keep the oud and need to make it pay.

Option 1: reduce the load, if the test allows

The only lever your customer never sees. Pull it first, and only with proof.

Going from 10% to 8% removes 4 g of Amber Oud Royal (₹46.56) and adds 4 g of wax back (₹2.40), so the candle saves ₹44.16. At 7%, ₹66.24. At 80 candles a month that is ₹3,532.80 or ₹5,299.20 a month, ₹42,393.60 or ₹63,590.40 a year, with no change to price, jar or story, and contribution rising from 46.2% to 49.9% or 51.7%. The 8% candle clears the 50% target on its own.

Why might a lower load hold? Because more oil does not mean proportionally more throw, and many oils reach a point where extra fragrance mostly costs money; the page for this oil itself suggests starting candles at 7%. Why might it not? Because a heavy, resinous oud may need its load to fill a room through a full melt pool, and a weaker oud candle at a premium price is the most expensive mistake on this page. Only a blind, full-life test separates the two. The method for finding the lowest load that still throws is the lowest effective load guide, and the version for an expensive oil specifically is whether 7% performs as well as 10% before production.

The test costs ₹5,606.64 (two 100 g bottles, wax, nine premium jars, a wick pack, five hours at ₹150.00 an hour, all itemised in the test-gate section) and pays back in about 1.6 months if 8% passes. If no lower load passes, you have spent ₹5,606.64 to learn the 10% is earning its place, which is also worth knowing before you raise a price on it.

Mistake: cutting the oud from 10% to 8% for the next batch "to see if anyone notices". Why it fails: customers of a premium candle notice in reviews and repeat orders, not on the day, and by then a whole batch is out. The saving was ₹44.16 a candle; one lost repeat customer at ₹1,199.00 is worth many of those. Fix: controlled test against a retained 10% control, blind, full life, then change control. A lower load may also change wick behaviour; treat any wick saving as a possibility the test confirms, not money in hand (wick effects of a lower load).

Option 2: raise the price, and how many sales it can lose

A price rise is worth it until it costs you more sales than its margin covers.

If the load test says 10% must stay, the cost is fixed and the question moves to price. Moving from ₹1,199.00 to ₹1,299.00 is an 8.3% rise and adds ₹100.00 a candle: contribution goes from ₹553.78 to ₹653.78 (50.3% of the new price). Whether that helps depends on how many sales you lose, which is a price elasticity question. Here is a worked example; the volume loss is an assumption, not a forecast.

Price-elasticity worked example · ₹1,199.00 → ₹1,299.00 · 10% load
Contribution = price − ₹515.22 COGS − ₹130.00 selling costs · 80 candles a month today · sales loss: worked assumptions
Scenario Candles a month Contribution a candle vs today, a month
Today at ₹1,199.00 80 ₹553.78 — (₹44,302.40 a month)
₹1,299.00, lose 5 sales 75 ₹653.78 ₹4,731.10 better
₹1,299.00, lose 10 sales (implied elasticity 1.50) 70 ₹653.78 ₹1,462.20 better
₹1,299.00, break-even 67.76 ₹653.78 the same
₹1,299.00, lose 20 sales 60 ₹653.78 ₹5,075.60 worse

The break-even is the useful number: at ₹1,299.00 you need only 67.76 candles a month to match today, so the rise pays unless you lose more than about 12.24 of 80 sales, 15.3% of volume for an 8.3% price rise. Implied elasticity is volume change ÷ price change: losing 10 sales (12.5%) for an 8.3% rise is 1.50. You do not know your own until you test, so test: raise the price on one channel or for one month, watch oud units, and watch whether other scents' sales move with it. If both levers are open, they stack: at 8% and ₹1,299.00, the candle contributes ₹697.94.

Argued against our own interest: if the price rise holds, you may not need to touch the oud at all, and that means you keep buying the expensive oil from us at today's quantity. It is still the right answer if your test shows 10% is what makes the candle. The wrong answer is the one that protects our order: keeping the load and the price and absorbing the shortfall without deciding to.

Option 3: the flagship margin, done deliberately

A candle can earn below target and still earn its place. Prove it, cap it, review it.

Some candles exist to make the rest of the range look and sell better: the premium oud at the top of the shelf, the one in the hero photograph, the scent corporate buyers ask for first. Carrying such a candle below your target margin can be sound business, but only if you can name and measure what it brings. In the worked example the oud falls ₹45.72 a candle short of a 50% target: ₹3,657.60 a month, ₹43,891.20 a year at 80 candles.

Flagship test · does the oud pay for its shortfall?
Worked example: 80 oud orders a month · companion candle contribution ₹380.00 · attach rates are assumptions to replace with your order data
Measure Worked figure Reading
Shortfall against target, a month ₹3,657.60 the cost of carrying the oud below 50%
Companion sales at 25% attach ₹7,600.00 covers the shortfall: the oud is a working flagship
Companion sales at 10% attach ₹3,040.00 does not cover it: the oud is a subsidy
Cap and review ₹3,657.60 a month, reviewed quarterly if attach falls or the gap grows, go back to option 2

Three rules keep a flagship honest. Cap it: write down the monthly shortfall you accept and check it every month; a rising oil price or falling volume should trip a review. Measure it: count orders where the oud sells with something else, gift and corporate enquiries that start from it, and whether removing it from a page changes the rest of the page's sales. Date it: a flagship decision expires; revisit it each season. A candle that cannot pass this test is not a flagship, and the question becomes whether to keep it at all, which is the slow-seller discontinue post.

Why margin comes last
It is the only option that is invisible and costs money every month. A load cut is tested once; a price rise is visible and reversible; a lower margin quietly repeats with every candle sold. That is why it should be a written decision with a number on it, not the default you end up with because the other two felt risky. For premium candles generally, whether high COGS needs cutting at all is the premium-COGS post.

Perfume-grade against candle-grade oud

A fourth option exists. It is not a cost tweak; it is a new candle.

Moving from a perfume-grade oud to a candle-grade one changes the cost more than any load cut: in the same premium candle at 10%, White Royal Oud costs ₹444.48 against Amber Oud Royal's ₹515.22, ₹70.74 less, and contributes ₹624.52 (52.1%). At 8% it would be ₹414.47, contributing ₹654.53 (54.6%). But it is a different scent with a different profile; your customers would be buying a different candle in the same jar. Treat it as a range decision, not a saving, and give it a full retest: throw, wick, colour and full-life burn (what to retest when the fragrance changes).

The three options applied to a candle-grade premium oud · White Royal Oud
Same candle, jar, box, price and selling costs · 1 kg price · worked example
Option Amber Oud Royal White Royal Oud
Today, 10% at ₹1,199.00 ₹553.78 (46.2%) ₹624.52 (52.1%)
1. Load 10% → 8% +₹44.16 a candle +₹30.01 a candle
2. Price → ₹1,299.00 +₹100.00 a candle if volume holds +₹100.00 a candle if volume holds
3. Flagship gap to 50% ₹45.72 a candle already above target at 10%

The comparison shows why the sequence matters most on perfume-grade oils: on White Royal Oud the candle already clears the target, so none of the three levers is urgent. On Amber Oud Royal, the load lever alone (₹44.16) is nearly half the price lever (₹100.00) and costs nothing in customer perception if it passes.

1
Write down today's candleCurrent load (10% in the worked example), oil, wax, wick, jar, cure, and the throw you sell. Keep two candles from the current batch as the control.
2
Ladder down inside both ceilingsThree candles each at the current load, two points lower and three points lower (here 10%, 8%, 7%). Amber Oud Royal's page itself suggests starting at 7%; Chunks allows up to 13%.
3
Bracket the wick at the lower loadsA lower load can shrink the melt pool or change the flame. Add a one-size-up or one-size-down wick at the lowest load if the first burn looks off.
4
Cure, then judge blind across the full lifeMany makers judge throw at day 3, 7 and 14. Coded candles, the same closed room, fresh noses; burns of 3–4 hours to about 1 cm left, recording throw at set distances, soot and jar heat.
5
Approve the lowest load that matches the controlIf 8% matches 10% blind, that is your new load. If only 10% passes, stop here: the load lever is closed, go to price.
6
Change control before rolloutNew recipe card, first production batch labelled and retained, second oil lot checked against the retained sample.

What the customer must not notice: the scent profile, the throw at the distance they expect from a premium candle, the burn time and the look of the wax. If the 8% candle is "nearly as good", it fails: a premium price buys "as good". The change-control discipline for a load change on a bestseller is in testing cost-down changes without risking a bestseller; the money for a passed 10% to 8% cut at volume is the 10% to 8% saving across 1,000 candles, and which loads to put on the ladder is the lower-load test design.

The page calls it "a fine perfume–grade fragrance oil", lists perfume usage rates up to 25% (perfume, not candle, rates), and gives "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%" with the tip "In candles, start at 7% and adjust based on wax blend and wick size." At 10% its candle costs ₹70.74 less than the Amber Oud Royal one. Eco Candle Wicks — and Cotton Braided for the bracket
Resinous, heavy oils commonly need a wick adjustment, and dropping from 10% to 8% can change flame and melt pool. Bracket the wick in your load test rather than assuming the 10% wick still fits. The pages state no jar range in the text we captured; these are test rungs. All are flat per wick at every pack size, so bigger packs save nothing. The C1 10-pack is out of stock on 4 October 2026.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 35 days from our 4 October 2026 price check, and premium oud candles are a gifting staple. Do not change the oud's load for festive production on a hunch: pour Diwali at the load you have approved, run the lower-load test alongside, and change in the new year if it passes. A price change for the festive window is quicker to test than a formula. When your test passes, send us the quantities and we will quote with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

The CSI principle
Cut what the customer cannot see, price what they can, and give margin away only on purpose.
A load test on a perfume-grade oud is the most valuable test in a range; a flagship without a cap and a review date is just a subsidy.
"Your most expensive candle deserves your most careful test, not your quietest discount."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oud oils, wax and wicks named here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you to test using less of our perfume-grade oud before anything else, notes that its own page suggests starting at 7%, and says our 10 kg wax bag costs more than ten 1 kg bags.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. Every size shown is in stock on that date except the Eco C1 10-pack, which is flagged. Product wording is quoted from the pages; Amber Oud Royal's perfume usage rates are not candle loads, and we say so where they appear.

The ₹1,199.00 and ₹1,299.00 prices, ₹130.00 selling costs, 80 candles a month, the sales-loss scenarios and implied elasticity, the 50% target, the 25% attach rate and ₹380.00 companion contribution, the jar (₹120.00), box (₹45.00) and labour rate are labelled worked examples; which load passes is your burn test's answer, not ours. This is practical business judgement, not financial advice. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reduce fragrance load in an expensive candle without losing throw?
Sometimes. More oil does not mean proportionally more throw, so test lower loads blind against your current candle through full burns. Worked: Amber Oud Royal at 8% instead of 10% saves ₹44.16 a 200 g candle if it passes.
How much can I raise my candle price before losing money?
Until the sales you lose cost more than the extra margin. Worked: ₹1,199.00 to ₹1,299.00 on an 80-a-month oud candle pays unless you lose more than about 12.24 sales a month (15.3%).
What is price elasticity for candles?
The percentage change in sales divided by the percentage change in price. Losing 10 of 80 sales (12.5%) after an 8.3% rise is an elasticity of about 1.50. Measure your own with a price test.
Is it okay to have a low-margin candle in my range?
Yes, if it is a deliberate flagship: cap the shortfall (₹3,657.60 a month in the worked example), measure the sales it brings in, and review it each season.
What fragrance load should I use for a perfume-grade oud in candles?
Use the oil page's candle wording and your wax ceiling, then test. Amber Oud Royal's page gives "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%" and suggests starting at 7%; its 15–25% figures are perfume rates, not candle loads.
Should I switch to a cheaper oud fragrance oil?
Only as a range decision with a full retest: it is a different scent. In the worked candle, White Royal Oud at 10% costs ₹70.74 less than Amber Oud Royal, but your customers would be buying a different candle.
Keep the oud, make it pay
Test a lower load first, price second, and carry a lower margin only as a capped, measured flagship.
On the worked candle, a passed 10% to 8% test is worth ₹42,393.60 a year; a ₹1,299.00 price holds unless you lose more than 12.24 sales a month. Tell us your oud and load on WhatsApp and we will tell you which packs cover the test.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on fragrance oil costing too much (6021–6040) in the series on candle cost reduction and raw-material optimisation. It owns the keep-the-oud decision: the three options (lower load, higher price, lower margin) quantified for a perfume-grade oud and a candle-grade premium oud, the load-test gate, a labelled price-elasticity example and the flagship-margin rules.

The current 10% load, ₹1,199.00 and ₹1,299.00 prices, ₹130.00 selling costs, 80 candles a month, the sales-loss scenarios, the 50% target, the attach rates, the companion contribution, jar (₹120.00), box (₹45.00), ₹150.00 an hour and the nine-candle test are worked examples.
