I Want to Make 500 Luxury Soy Candles Per Month — What Pack Sizes of Wax, Fragrance and Wicks Make Sense Once the Formula Is Validated?

What 500 a month actually consumes

Start from one candle and multiply, because every planning error at this scale is a per-candle error that got amplified five hundred times. A 150 g fill at 8% of total wax weight — the convention CSI's own wax pages use — is 138.89 g of wax and 11.11 g of oil. Under the other common convention, load as a share of the finished candle, the same jar is 7.41%; the grams are identical either way, which is why weighing beats arguing.

Two notes on that table before we price it. The 5% allowance is ours, not a specification — it covers what stays in the jug, the pour you abandon because the top set badly, and the jar you knock over. Measure your own losses over three months and replace our figure with yours; a maker running a 2% loss is buying too much wax every month, and one running 8% has a process problem worth finding. And the wick column says 520, not 500, because a wick you have to re-centre is a wick you throw away.

The pack ladder, per gram and per piece

Here is the table the phrase "bulk pricing" usually replaces. Every figure is the listed price divided by the listed quantity, at every pack size CSI publishes for that product. Read the last column first.

Why the flat lines are still worth buying big

If a 1,000-pack of C1 wicks costs exactly a thousand times a single wick, why buy it? Three reasons, none of them price, and all of them worth money at 500 a month.

Continuity. A validated formula is a formula in a specific wick, and a stockout on that wick stops the line. Holding two months of wicks at ₹5,900 for a thousand C1 is cheap insurance against a month where you cannot pour. The same logic applies to the oil that your bestseller uses.

Handling and consistency. Eight bags of wax a month instead of seventy-three packets means fewer openings, less exposure, and less chance of a partial bag going into the melter with the wrong thing. If you melt in batches, a 10 kg electric wax melter and a 10 kg bag are the same unit of work, which makes the day's arithmetic trivial. One CSI customer, Sonal Sahani, reports nine months of use with 10 kg melting in 20 to 30 minutes — that is their experience of the machine, not a specification we publish.

Fewer decisions. At this volume the scarce resource is attention. A standing monthly order of eight wax bags, six oil bottles, one wick pack, twenty-five jar packs and thirteen sticker sheets is one decision a month. Rebuilding that basket from small packs every month is thirty.

The monthly bill, line by line

A worked month: 500 candles at a 150 g fill, three fragrances split evenly at 2 kg of oil each, wicks split 300 C1 and 200 C2 from a validated formula, and the stated-fill 150 g jar. Every pack is one CSI lists.

That last row is the whole answer to "how much does buying bigger save". ₹1,034 a month on a ₹1,24,209.60 bill is 0.83%, and the oil line is the only place it comes from — 6 kg bought as six kilos rather than sixty hundred-gram bottles. On the wax, the wicks, the jar and the stickers, the biggest listed pack and the smallest cost the same per unit. If your business plan has a volume-discount assumption in it, replace it with this number or with a quote you have actually been given.

The packs to standardise on

Three lines are worth locking down for a standing order: the wax you melt eight bags of, the oil whose ladder is steep enough to reward the kilo, and the wick you now buy in hundreds. Each card shows every listed pack, the unit price and how many 150 g candles the pack covers.

Reordering in the right sequence

Once the formula is fixed, the monthly purchase becomes a routine — and the routine has an order, because the lines have different lead sensitivities and different consequences if you get them wrong.

Above the listed packs

At 500 candles a month you are at or past the top of several CSI ladders, and it is worth being precise about where they end. Soy wax stops at 10 kg on every listing except Natural Soy Pearl Wax, which is listed at 50 kg for ₹21,240. There is no 25 kg and no 100 kg soy pack in the catalogue. Fragrance oil stops at 1 kg on every listing — there is no 5 kg or 10 kg fragrance pack. Dye stops at 100 ml or 100 gm; there is no 1 kg dye. And there are no candle-making machines in the range at all — no filling, moulding or wicking equipment — only wax melters, a hot air gun and hand tools.

So a month at your volume is arithmetic on the listed packs, and the listed per-kilo prices are the most you would pay.
