CSI Jar & Container Guides · Sizing a Jar
Start from the candle, not the jar. A 200 g candle, oil included, needs more millilitres than it weighs, plus a gap under the lid. Here is the calculation backwards, and the one in-stock CSI jar worth weighing for it.
222–233 ml
of space below the fill line for a 200 g candle, before headspace (rule of thumb) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much room does a 200 g finished candle need? About 222 to 233 ml below your fill line, because wax is lighter than water (a common rule of thumb: 0.86 to 0.9 g per ml of water-space). The fragrance oil is inside the 200 g, not extra.

So what size jar should I buy? Add your headspace to that. For a straight jar about 6.3 cm wide inside, 1 cm of headspace means a brim capacity of roughly 253 to 264 ml; 1.5 cm means 269 to 279 ml. Wider jars need more, because every centimetre of gap holds more.

Which CSI jar fits? Of the in-stock listings, the Green Iridescent jar (7 × 10 cm, ₹150.00) is the one whose range crosses 200 g: roughly 0.9 to 1.9 cm of headspace in our worked example. The CSI listings written for 200 g are out of stock on 26 September 2026.

Will a 200 ml jar do? No. 200 g of wax needs more room than a 200 ml jar has at the brim; that jar makes a candle of about 150 g.
The short answer
The volume: 200 g of candle takes about 222 to 233 ml at the fill line, 11% to 16% more millilitres than grams.
The jar: fill-line volume + headspace volume = minimum brim capacity. For a 6.3 cm inside diameter at 1 cm headspace, about 253–264 ml; at 9.3 cm, about 290–300 ml.
The CSI fit: Green Iridescent jar, 7 × 10 cm, 184 to 224 g on our estimate; Ceramic Jar states 180 g; the 200 ml family makes about 150 g. Buy one to weigh before a hundred.
The oil: inside the 200 g. At 8%, 16 g of oil + 184 g of wax. Changing the load does not change the jar you need.
Which in-stock CSI jar holds a 200 g candle? Finished candle per jar at 1 to 1.5 cm headspace, to scale (1 g = 2.4 px). Dots: listing figures; bars: worked examples. 200 g target Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) · stated 150 g stated Ceramic Jar for Candle Making stated "Fill Weight: 180 grams" 180 g stated White Matte and sisters, 8 × 7 cm "fill weight of 200 ml" 135–154 g; to 180 g if a fill line Green Iridescent jar, 7 × 10 cm "Capacity - 300g" 184–224 g (worked example) 200 g leaves a 0.9–1.9 cm gap Apothecary Dome Lid, 500 gm size stated "~500 g - 700 g" 500 g and up: off the scale "Fill Weight 200 gm" bamboo-lid jars and Borosilicate 250 g out of stock on 26 Sep 2026 100 g 120 g 140 g 160 g 180 g 200 g 220 g 240 g 260 g A 200 g candle needs about 222 to 233 ml at the fill line (0.86 to 0.9 rule of thumb) plus headspace. Filled dots are listing figures; bars are CSI worked examples (1 cm glass base assumed; the Iridescent range spans 3.5 mm walls or the 200 ml family's volume per cm). The hollow dot marks listings stated at 200 g that are out of stock. Weigh one jar before you buy for a 200 g label.
A 200 g target line against CSI's in-stock jars, drawn to scale. The 150 g and 180 g listings and the 200 ml family fall short; the large apothecary, borosilicate and clip-top jars overshoot so far that a 200 g candle would look lost in them; the listings actually written for 200 g are out of stock. The Green Iridescent jar is the one in-stock range that crosses the line, which is why it is the one to weigh first.
Straight answer
I want to make a 200 g finished scented candle. What size jar should I buy once fragrance oil and headspace are included?
Buy a jar with room for about 222 to 233 ml of candle below the fill line, plus your headspace above it. The 200 g already includes the fragrance oil (at 8%, 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax), and wax is lighter than water, so a candle needs more millilitres than it weighs in grams. Headspace adds the volume of a 1 to 1.5 cm slice of the jar, which depends on its width. For a straight-sided jar about 6.3 cm wide inside, that means a brim capacity of roughly 253 to 279 ml; for a jar 9.3 cm wide inside, roughly 290 to 334 ml. A "200 ml" jar is too small; a "250 ml" one is borderline. In CSI's in-stock range on 26 September 2026, the Green Iridescent jar with bamboo lid (listed 7 cm × 10 cm) is the listing our worked example puts at 184 to 224 g, leaving roughly 0.9 to 1.9 cm below the rim for a 200 g candle. Buy one for ₹150.00, water-fill it and test-pour it before you buy more.
One line: a 200 g candle needs a jar of roughly 253 to 334 ml to the brim depending on width and headspace; in CSI's current stock, weigh the Green Iridescent jar first.
Weigh the candidate before you commit. One Green Iridescent jar is ₹150.00 (in stock on 26 September 2026, single units). Three jars, 1 kg of CSI 464, 100 g of Woody Oud and a C1/C2 wick pair make a three-candle sizing test for ₹1,563.92.

The reverse calculation: 200 g back to a jar size

Most calculators start with a jar and end with grams. You start with grams, so run it backwards.

The forward chain is the ml-to-g method in the conversion guide: brim capacity, minus headspace, times a wax factor, equals candle weight. Reversed, it becomes four steps. Each step is a division or an addition, so you can do it on a phone.

Reverse calculation · 200 g finished candle · worked example
From a target weight to the smallest jar that holds it with a gap under the lid
Step What you do 200 g example Why
1. Fix the target Finished candle weight, oil included 200 g (at 8%: 16 g oil + 184 g wax) Load is a share of the total, not an addition to it
2. Weight to volume Divide by 0.9 and by 0.86 222 to 233 ml Wax is lighter than water: rule of thumb
3. Add headspace Inside area (π × r²) × gap in cm 6.3 cm inside: 31.2 ml per cm → +31 to +47 ml for 1 to 1.5 cm The gap is volume the jar must have and the candle does not use
4. Minimum brim capacity Step 2 + step 3 253 to 279 ml Compare this, not 200, with a listing's ml
5. Minimum inside depth Step 2 ÷ area + gap 8.1 to 9.0 cm Add the glass base for the outside height

Two things in that chain surprise most makers. The first is step 2: a 200 g candle needs 11% to 16% more millilitres than it weighs in grams. That is why "I want 200 g, so I'll buy 200 ml" fails before the lid is even considered; the density side is explained in the density explainer. The second is step 3: headspace is a volume, not a percentage. In a narrow jar, a centimetre of gap is a small slice; in a wide one, it is a big one.

Mistake: buying a "250 ml" jar for a 200 g candle because 250 is comfortably above 200. What happens: if 250 ml is to the brim and the jar is 6.3 to 7.3 cm wide inside, 1.5 cm of headspace leaves about 187 to 203 ml below the line: a 161 to 183 g candle. Fine for a 180 g product, short of 200 g. Fix: run steps 2 to 4 with the jar's own width, and weigh one before you buy the rest.
Which headspace?
This page uses 1 to 1.5 cm, the common rule-of-thumb range. Your lid sets the real minimum: a lid with a plug or seal that sits inside the rim needs more. Why the gap matters and how to mark it is the headspace rule; working it out for a specific 250 ml jar is I Have a 250 ml Glass Jar and Want to Leave Space Below the Lid — How Do I Calculate the Correct Candle Fill Weight?.

Width changes the answer: a sizing table

Same 200 g, four widths, four different jars. The wider the jar, the bigger the brim you need.

The table runs the reverse calculation for four straight-sided inside diameters. The first is our standard worked-example jar (7 cm outside, 3.5 mm walls, so 6.3 cm inside); the others go up in 1 cm steps. No CSI listing states an inside diameter, so measure yours across the inside at the height where the wax will sit, with callipers or a ruler.

Sizing table · 200 g finished candle · straight-sided jars · worked example
Wax depth, minimum inside depth and minimum brim capacity by inside diameter
Inside diameter Inside area Wax depth for 222–233 ml Brim needed, 1 cm gap Inside depth needed, 1 cm gap Brim needed, 1.5 cm gap
6.3 cm 31.2 cm² 7.1–7.5 cm 253–264 ml 8.1–8.5 cm 269–279 ml
7.3 cm 41.9 cm² 5.3–5.6 cm 264–274 ml 6.3–6.6 cm 285–295 ml
8.3 cm 54.1 cm² 4.1–4.3 cm 276–287 ml 5.1–5.3 cm 303–314 ml
9.3 cm 67.9 cm² 3.3–3.4 cm 290–300 ml 4.3–4.4 cm 324–334 ml

Read down the brim columns. Going from 6.3 cm to 9.3 cm wide raises the brim capacity you need by about 14% at 1 cm of headspace, for exactly the same candle, because the empty slice under the lid grows with the area. It also changes the look: the 200 g candle sits 7.1 to 7.5 cm deep in the narrow jar and only 3.3 to 3.4 cm deep in the wide one. Wide, shallow candles bring their own wick questions (a wider pool usually needs a larger or second wick), which I'm Using the Same Amount of Wax in a Tall Narrow Jar and a Short Wide Jar — Why Do They Need Different Wick Sizes? works through. The table does not tell you a wick; that is what a burn test is for.

Tapered, shouldered or curved jars
The table assumes straight sides. A jar that narrows towards the top or has a shoulder loses more volume to headspace than its brim figure suggests, and one that bellies out holds more at mid-height. The two-jars-same-ml problem is Two Candle Jars Both Say 200 ml but Have Different Shapes — Will They Actually Hold the Same Amount of Candle Wax?. For any shape, water to the fill line on a scale is the only figure you need; the table is for choosing which jars are worth weighing.

The honest summary: between the 200 ml families and the Apothecary's 500 g, the in-stock listings that state a capacity are the Ceramic Jar (180 g, a near miss) and the Green Iridescent jar, and the Iridescent's range is the only one in our table that crosses 200 g. The listings that say "200" in grams are out of stock. If a 200 g product in one of those designs matters to you, ask us on WhatsApp about restock; we will not promise a date we do not have.

Argued against our own interest: the Apothecary 500 gm jar is in stock, has some of the fullest dimension wording in our range and the page's "Safe for hot-pour up to 85°C" wording. It will certainly hold 200 g. It is still the wrong jar for a 200 g candle: more than 6 cm of empty glass above the wax (worked example), a product that looks under-filled, and a jar bought for 500 g of candle. The looks problem at a correct net weight is My Candle Jar Looks Too Empty at the Correct Net Weight — Should I Increase the Fill Weight or Choose a Smaller Container?.

The Green Iridescent jar, checked against 200 g

The listing says 300g. The geometry says a 200 g candle. Both can be true only if "300g" is not wax.

The page gives "Capacity - 300g" and "Diameter - 7cm Height - 10cm", with a bamboo lid. We work it two ways, with a 1 cm glass base assumed in both. Calibrated to CSI's 200 ml family, which is also 7 cm wide and holds 200 ml over about 7 cm of inside depth: 9 cm of inside depth gives about 257 ml to the brim. Straight geometry with 3.5 mm walls (6.3 cm inside): about 281 ml. So the brim is roughly 257 to 281 ml.

Green Iridescent jar · 7 × 10 cm · worked example
What the jar is likely to hold, and where a 200 g candle would sit
Question Estimate How we got it
Brim capacity 257–281 ml 9 cm inside depth × 28.6 or 31.2 ml per cm
Finished candle, 1 cm gap 197–224 g 8 cm of wax × area × 0.86 to 0.9
Finished candle, 1.5 cm gap 184–210 g 7.5 cm of wax × area × 0.86 to 0.9
Gap left by a 200 g candle 0.9–1.9 cm 9 cm minus 222–233 ml ÷ area
Could "300g" be a wax fill? No, not with a gap under the lid 300 g of wax needs about 333–349 ml, more than the whole jar

So the jar is a real candidate, but a close one. At the calibrated end, a 200 g candle leaves about 0.9 cm under the rim, just under the common 1 cm rule of thumb; at the geometric end, 1.9 cm. The bamboo lid's underside decides which end is acceptable. One water-fill settles it: fill to the brim and weigh, then work out the gap from your own number.

Costing, as a worked example at 8% with Woody Oud (every size in stock; page wording "candles (6-10%)"): the jar ₹150.00 + 184 g of CSI 464 ₹93.36 + 16 g of Woody Oud at the 100 g price ₹72.50 + a C2 wick ₹9.44 = ₹325.30 per candle, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. The same oil and wax in a 180 g Ceramic Jar candle come to ₹288.51; in a 150 g Matte candle, ₹204.64.

Mistake: reading "300g" as 300 g of candle and pricing a 300 g product. What happens: the jar holds something closer to 200 g with a proper gap; a "300 g" label would overstate the candle by about half, and the price per gram and the wax order would be wrong with it. Fix: ask us what the figure measures, and trust your water-fill over the listing.

If no jar fits: change the jar, or change the target

200 g is a number you chose. The jar you love may be telling you to choose a different one.

Sometimes the right answer is not a bigger jar. Here are the four options, with what each costs you. Net-weight labelling itself is handled in I Want to Sell a Candle as 200 g Net Weight — How Large Should the Container Be So the Wax Doesn't Sit Too Close to the Rim? and How Do Professional Candle Brands Determine the Correct Net Weight to Print on the Label When Using a New Jar?; this is only about which jar.

Options when your preferred jar does not hold 200 g · our judgement
What changes, what it costs, and when to choose it
Option Example in CSI's range Jar per gram of candle Trade-off Choose it when
Go up to a jar that fits Green Iridescent, about 200 g ₹0.75 Single units; tight gap; weigh first 200 g is fixed by a customer or a price list
Accept a near miss Ceramic Jar, 180 g stated ₹0.72 10% less candle; opaque jar The design matters more than the round number
Change the target down 200 ml Matte family, about 150 g ₹0.47 25% less candle; many colours in stock You want a gift-size candle at a lower price
Change the target down, lidded Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) ₹0.63 150 g; lid included; page states "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" You want a lid and a stated heat figure
Go well above Apothecary 500 gm ₹0.42 A 500 g candle, not a 200 g one You are really designing a larger product

"Jar per gram of candle" is the jar price divided by the candle it holds: a quick way to see that the 150 g Matte jar is not only smaller but cheaper per gram of product than the Iridescent. The Clear 150 g jar's hot-pour figure is page wording and applies only to that listing and its 150 g sisters; with CSI 464 (80°C–90°C on its page), the lower limit governs, so pour at 80–85°C in those jars.

Checking one jar before you buy for 200 g

One jar, one afternoon: the cheapest way to find out whether "about 200 g" is 190 or 215.
1
Water-fill to the brimTare the clean, dry jar and fill with water until it would overflow. For a 200 g candle you want roughly 255 ml or more to the brim in a jar about 7 cm wide; less than about 250 ml and it will not work with a sensible gap.
2
Measure the inside and the lidMeasure the inside diameter at mid-height and note how far the lid reaches below the rim (a plug, seal or thread). That sets your minimum headspace.
3
Mark where 200 g would sitFrom the rim, the 200 g candle's surface sits at (brim ml − 222 to 233 ml) ÷ inside area, in cm. If that is less than your minimum headspace, the jar is too small for 200 g.
4
Test-pour 200 g, jar on the scaleWick the jar, tare it and pour 200 g of wax and oil at your load (184 g + 16 g at 8%) at the wax page's temperature. Note where the surface sits after cooling and any top-up.
5
Fit the lid and lookLid on: does it clear the wax and the wick? Lid off: does the candle look full enough to sell as 200 g? If either answer is no, change the jar or the target now, not after a hundred.
6
Burn-test before you commitBracket C1 and C2 (or Cotton Braided, whose page says it is made for candles "exceeding 8 cm" across, for wider jars) and run full burns to the final centimetre. Most CSI jar listings state no heat figure; the tests in How Do I Test a New Glass Candle Jar for Heat Safety Before Ordering 500 Pieces? are how you approve one.
The wick is a separate decision
A 200 g target tells you the jar size, not the wick. Wick by inside diameter and melt pool, testing at least two options: Eco C1 at ₹5.90, C2 at ₹9.44 and Cotton Braided at ₹12.00 per wick. See the diameter-and-wick hub.

Jars, wax and the scale for a 200 g candle

Five items, chosen on what their pages state, price and stock on 26 September 2026, not on burn performance: CSI publishes no burn-down data for these jars. Woody Oud is the costing example only; any oil whose page states a candle load works the same way (Woody Oud: 15 g ₹93.22 at ₹6.21 per gram, 50 g ₹271.40 at ₹5.43, and 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg all at ₹4.53).

jar · 7 × 10 cm · the in-stock 200 g candidate
Green Iridescent jar with bamboo lid - 300g
The page states "Capacity - 300g", "Diameter - 7cm Height - 10cm" and a natural bamboo lid; it gives no heat wording and does not say whether 7 cm is outside or inside. On our worked example it holds a 184 to 224 g candle at 1 to 1.5 cm of headspace, so a 200 g candle leaves roughly 0.9 to 1.9 cm below the rim. The "300g" cannot be a wax fill at a sensible headspace in a jar this size, so ask us what it measures. It is a single-unit listing at ₹150.00, in stock on 26 September 2026; the white version is out of stock. Who it is for: makers who want a 200 g product in a tall, lidded jar. Limitation: no pack pricing, and no heat rating on the page; run full burn-down tests before you sell.

Ceramic Jar for Candle Making
The page states "Fill Weight: 180 grams" for a white jar with blue speckles, and "thick ceramic walls" that "retain and diffuse heat evenly" (the page's wording; no temperature). No dimensions are given. At the stated figure it is 10% short of 200 g. Weigh one: if its fill line takes 200 g with a sensible gap, you have a second candidate; if not, it is an honest 180 g product. Who it is for: makers who can change the target to 180 g. White Matte Glass Jar
The page states "a fill weight of 200 ml" and "Height 8 cm width 7 cm". It will not take a 200 g candle: 200 g of wax needs 222 to 233 ml, more than 200 ml even at the brim. What it does well is a candle of about 150 g (135 to 180 g depending on the reading), which is why it belongs here: if the target is negotiable, a 150 g product in this jar costs ₹0.47 of jar per gram of candle against ₹0.75 for the Iridescent. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles
The page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C". At 8%, a 200 g candle is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. One 1 kg bag covers a three-jar sizing test (552 g) with room for pitcher loss and a second pour. Per gram, 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg are all ₹0.51; the 500 g is ₹0.52. Limitation: the page gives no density, so the 0.86 to 0.9 factor behind every figure on this page is a rule of thumb for you to confirm with a weighed pour.

Candle Making Weighing Scale
Everything on this page is an estimate until one jar has been water-filled and one candle weighed. The page describes a digital scale showing "grams or ounces" with "one-button operation" but states no maximum capacity or reading step, so check the marking on your unit before weighing a jar full of water. Argued against our own interest: a kitchen scale that reads single grams and tares properly does the job; if you own one, skip this.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers
Single ₹354.00 ₹354.00 every water-fill and candle weighing
The sizing test with the scale is ₹1,917.92. Buy the scale — ₹354.00
When the right purchase is nothing yet: if you already own a jar you like, water-fill it tonight and run the reverse calculation on your own number. If it holds 200 g with a gap, you need wax and oil, not a new jar. If it doesn't, you have learnt that for free.

The CSI principle
Start from the candle you want to sell, and work back to the glass.
Weight to volume, volume plus headspace, headspace by width: then compare the answer with a listing, and let one water-filled jar confirm it before you buy the rest.
"A 200 g candle does not fit a 200 ml jar. It needs more room than it weighs, and a little more for the lid."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, wax and tools on this page, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you our 200 ml jars are too small for a 200 g candle, that our jars written for 200 g are out of stock, that one of our listings carries a capacity figure that cannot be a wax fill, and that our best-dimensioned large jar is the wrong choice for this product. That is the point: you should buy the jar that fits.

Every price and per-unit figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every item in a pick table is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock listings are named as such. Capacity, dimension and heat wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.

The 0.86 to 0.9 factor and 1 to 1.5 cm headspace are rules of thumb; the straight-sided geometry, 1 cm base and 3.5 mm walls are worked-example assumptions; the Green Iridescent range and the options table are our estimates and judgement. Frequently asked questions

What size jar do I need for a 200 g candle?
One with about 222 to 233 ml of space below your fill line, plus headspace. For a straight jar about 6.3 cm wide inside, that is roughly 253 to 264 ml to the brim with a 1 cm gap, or 269 to 279 ml with 1.5 cm. Wider jars need more.
Can I make a 200 g candle in a 200 ml jar?
No. Wax is lighter than water, so 200 g of it takes about 222 to 233 ml by a common rule of thumb, more than a 200 ml jar holds even to the brim. A 200 ml jar makes a candle of about 150 g with a normal gap under the lid.
Is fragrance oil included in the 200 g candle weight?
Yes. On a total-weight basis, a 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. The load changes the split, not the size of jar you need.
Which CSI jar holds a 200 g candle?
On 26 September 2026, the in-stock candidate is the Green Iridescent jar with bamboo lid (7 × 10 cm, ₹150.00), estimated at 184 to 224 g with a 1 to 1.5 cm gap. The listings stated at 200 g are out of stock. Weigh one jar before ordering more.
How much headspace should a 200 g candle jar have?
Roughly 1 to 1.5 cm between wax and rim is a common rule of thumb, set in the end by your lid. In a jar 6.3 cm wide inside, each centimetre of headspace is about 31 ml of extra jar capacity.
Does a wider jar need more capacity for the same candle weight?
Yes, because the headspace slice holds more. At 1 cm of headspace, a 200 g candle needs about 253 to 264 ml of brim capacity in a 6.3 cm-wide jar and about 290 to 300 ml in a 9.3 cm-wide one (straight sides, worked example).

Non-price figures: 1 ml of water ≈ 1 g; the 0.86 to 0.9 factor and 1 to 1.5 cm headspace are rules of thumb. The sizing table assumes straight sides; inside diameters of 6.3 to 9.3 cm are illustrative. The Green Iridescent range assumes a 1 cm glass base and either the 200 ml family's volume per centimetre (28.6 ml) or 3.5 mm walls (31.2 ml per cm). Load is a percentage of total candle weight. Christmas 25 December 2026 is a calendar fact. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.
