I Want to Make Large Peony-Shaped Candles — How Do I Choose Wax Hardness Without Making the Finished Candle Too Brittle?
Aktie
How do I know if it is too soft? Petals droop or lose definition in a warm room, take fingerprints, or bend and stay bent after release. Those point towards a firmer build or a lower fragrance load.
What does Vybar do in a peony candle? Vybar has a stated range of 0.5–2%. Makers generally use it to firm wax and hold fragrance. Treat any effect on your peony as something your test shows.
Does CSI sell a peony mould? Check the current mould range. CSI's listed floral moulds include Big Rose at ₹590.00 and the 7 Different Flower set at ₹885.00; a peony mould from elsewhere works with the same method.
Hardness and brittleness are not opposites
It is natural to think of wax on a single line from soft to hard, and to assume a large flower just needs to sit further towards hard. In practice two different things go wrong with big floral candles, and they pull in different directions.
Softness failures show as drooping: outer petals sag in a warm room, edges lose their crispness, and fingers leave marks when the flower is handled. Brittleness failures show as breakage: petal tips snap during release, edges chip in the box, and the thick centre can crack as it cools. A wax that cures one problem can create the other. Your job is to find the build where both are acceptable for your shape, your room and your packaging.
This page uses a peony whose real wax fill weighs 450 g, which you should weigh in your own mould. CSI's listed floral moulds include Big Rose (₹590.00) and the 7 Different Flower set (₹885.00); if your peony mould comes from elsewhere, the method is the same, and CSI supplies the wax, additives, wick and dye.
Size makes both failures more likely. A small rose has short petals with little leverage, so almost any pillar-grade wax holds them. A 450 g peony has long outer petals that overhang the centre, and each one acts like a small shelf: in warmth it sags under its own weight, and in a parcel it takes the knocks first. That is why a wax that works in a 15-cavity rose mould can fail in a peony.
Five builds to pour
CSI publishes no hardness or melt point for Soy Pillar Wax, and none for the paraffin pellets, so there is no way to choose a peony wax from figures alone. Instead, build a small ladder of options, each changing one thing, and let the flowers rank them.
| Build | Recipe for 450 g | Wax cost | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paraffin pellets | 450 g paraffin | 450 × ₹0.354 = ₹159.30 | Your baseline for crisp petals |
| Paraffin + 5% micro | 427.5 g paraffin + 22.5 g micro | ₹151.34 + ₹6.73 = ₹158.07 | Does added give reduce chipping? |
| Paraffin + 5% micro + 1% Vybar | 423 g paraffin + 22.5 g micro + 4.5 g Vybar | ₹149.74 + ₹6.73 + ₹14.04 = ₹170.51 | Can firmness be restored without losing give? |
| Soy Pillar Wax | 450 g pillar | 450 × ₹0.60 = ₹270.00 | A soy peony, matte finish |
| Pillar + 5% micro | 427.5 g pillar + 22.5 g micro | ₹256.50 + ₹6.73 = ₹263.23 | Smoother soy release and fewer chips? |
Micro is priced at ₹0.299 per g from the 1 kg slab (₹299.00) and Vybar at ₹3.12 per g from the 100 g pack (₹312.00). Microcrystalline wax is generally used by makers to add flexibility and toughness, with a stated range of 1–10%; Vybar is generally used to firm wax and hold fragrance, with a stated range of 0.5–2%. Neither is a ready-made CSI blend. They are your additions, and the flowers decide whether they help.
Container waxes are left out on purpose. CSI 464, the Chunks, CSI 468, Pearl and CSI 400 are made for jars; a 450 g free-standing peony in any of them would be the softness failure before you started.
Four checks that separate droop from chips
Score each check from 0 (bad) to 2 (good), so every build ends with a droop score (flex and warm-room checks) and a chip score (release and handling checks). The winner is not the highest single number; it is the build with no zero in either column. If two builds tie, keep the cheaper, or the one whose finish you prefer.
Run all five builds on the same day, in the same mould, at the same pour temperature read on a separate thermometer, and release them after the same cooling period. If you change two things at once — a new build and a warmer room, say — the scores stop meaning anything. One peony per build is a suggested minimum; two per build gives you a check on whether a single bad score was the pour.
Scent, colour and wick for a large peony
Fragrance softens wax. If you plan to scent the peonies, pour the winning build again at your intended load and repeat the warm-room check. British Rose states up to 6% for paraffin; at a suggested 4% of total weight a 450 g peony carries 18 g of oil and 432 g of wax, adding 18 × ₹3.068 = ₹55.22 from the 1 kg pack at ₹3,068.00.
Colour goes in after the build is chosen. Candle Dye Liquid (from ₹236.00 for 15 g/ml) gives soft blush and coral shades in small amounts, and the dye page notes colour looks more vivid in paraffin than in soy. CSI publishes no dosage per kg, so make a colour card first. A light dusting of mica inside the mould gives petal edges a sheen; keep it clear of the wick channel.
A large peony is often bought as décor, but it should still burn safely. Its centre is wider than a small flower, so test Eco C2 (₹9.44) against a length cut from the Braided Wick Roll (₹11.59 per metre at ₹706.82 for 61 m). CSI publishes no wick sizing chart; burn one test peony on a heat-safe tray, never unattended, and expect the outer petals to remain as a decorative shell.
Buy this to test, buy this once validated
Buy this to test: the five builds need 1,300.5 g of paraffin (450 + 427.5 + 423), 877.5 g of Soy Pillar Wax, 67.5 g of micro and 4.5 g of Vybar. Buy paraffin 1 kg + 500 g (₹354.00 + ₹177.00 = ₹531.00), Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg (₹600.00), Microcrystalline Wax Slab 500 g (₹149.00) and Vybar 50 g (₹156.00). Total: ₹1,436.00, plus your peony mould.
Buy this once validated: the winning build only. Twenty peonies in paraffin with 5% micro need 20 × 427.5 g = 8.55 kg of paraffin (nine 1 kg packs, ₹3,186.00) and 20 × 22.5 g = 450 g of micro (one 500 g slab, ₹149.00). In Soy Pillar Wax with micro, 8.55 kg of pillar wax means the 5 kg pack (₹3,000.00) and four 1 kg packs (₹2,400.00), or ₹5,400.00, leaving 450 g spare for a reference flower. Packaging, labour, shipping and GST are additional and your own figures.
A last note on the choice between bases. If your buyers want a soy flower, compare the two Soy Pillar Wax builds with each other and accept that the finish will be more matte than paraffin. If they simply want a beautiful peony, let the score sheet choose freely between all five; the paraffin builds cost ₹105.16 to ₹110.70 less per flower (₹263.23 − ₹158.07 and ₹270.00 − ₹159.30), and that saving belongs in the packaging that protects the petals.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test.
