I Want to Make Votive Candles That Release From Their Moulds Cleanly — Should I Use Container Wax or a Harder Wax?
Aktie
Which CSI wax should I test first? Soy Pillar Wax, made for pillar and designer mould candles, then paraffin pellets. Test simple blends with microcrystalline wax or Vybar inside their stated ranges.
Does CSI sell votive moulds? Not in its listed moulds as of October 2026. Use your own votive mould; CSI supplies the wax, wick, fragrance and a 70 g glass votive holder.
Why does my votive release unscented but stick when scented? Fragrance softens wax. Lower the load a little or test a Vybar blend before changing the whole wax system.
First decide which votive you are making
A moulded votive is a small free-standing candle, poured into a votive mould, released, and later burned inside a glass holder. A filled votive is poured straight into the glass and never leaves it. The question of clean release only applies to the first. If you are filling glass, you are making a small container candle, and a container wax is exactly right.
CSI's listed moulds do not include a dedicated votive mould, so for the moulded version the mould is your own: metal, polycarbonate or silicone. What CSI supplies is the wax, the wicks, the fragrance and, usefully, the Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram (₹159.30 for 5, ₹318.60 for 10), which works as the holder you burn-test your moulded votives in.
This matters because a moulded votive is designed to liquefy almost completely inside its holder as it burns. You are not just choosing a wax that leaves the mould cleanly; you are choosing one that then behaves well once it is sitting in glass.
Why container wax fights you in a votive mould
Container soy waxes such as CSI 464, the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 are formulated to do the opposite of what a mould needs. They are meant to stay soft enough to give a wide, even melt pool in a jar, and to cling to the glass wall so the candle does not pull away and leave wet spots. Pour one into a votive mould and it tends to grip the walls, release with a damaged surface or not release at all, and the piece that does come out can slump or dent in a warm room.
A free-standing candle wants a harder wax that contracts slightly as it sets. That contraction is what breaks the seal with the mould wall and lets the votive slide out. Hardness and shrinkage are the two properties to prioritise, and CSI publishes neither as a number for any of its waxes, so you compare them by behaviour in your own mould.
Harder wax options to test from CSI
CSI does not sell a ready-made votive blend, so the options are single waxes and simple blends you mix and test yourself. The additive ranges below are the ranges stated on the CSI product pages; the specific percentages in the table are suggested starting points.
| Option | CSI pack price | Starting blend | What you are testing |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 (control) | ₹507.40 per kg | 100% | Confirms the container-wax problem in your mould |
| Soy Pillar Wax | ₹600.00 per kg | 100% | Made for pillar and designer mould candles; first soy candidate |
| Soy Pillar Wax + Microcrystalline | ₹600.00 + ₹149.00 per 500 g | 95% + 5% | Whether micro improves surface and reduces brittleness (stated range 1–10%) |
| Fully Refined Paraffin Pellets | ₹354.00 per kg | 100% | A firm, lower-cost free-standing base |
| Paraffin Pellets + Vybar | ₹354.00 + ₹156.00 per 50 g | 99% + 1% | Whether Vybar helps fragrance retention and hardness (stated range 0.5–2%) |
Pour three votives of each option (a suggested starting point), unscented first. Release behaviour without fragrance gives you a clean baseline. Then repeat the two best options with fragrance at your intended load, because oil softens wax and can turn a clean release into a sticky one.
Choosing the fragrance for a moulded votive
Pick an oil whose product page states a pillar or paraffin limit, so you know where the ceiling sits. Sandalwood is a good example: its page lists up to 6% in paraffin and pillars, 0% vanillin and a 203°C flashpoint. A suggested starting load of 5% keeps you below that stated pillar ceiling and leaves room to move up if the throw is too quiet.
Pouring and cooling conditions that decide release
Wax choice gets you most of the way. The rest is process, and it is often the reason a good pillar wax still sticks.
Then test the burn, not just the release
A votive that leaves the mould perfectly has passed only half its exam. Place each released votive in a glass holder, such as the 70 gram votive jar, and burn it to the end. A moulded votive is meant to liquefy almost entirely inside its holder, so watch for a wick that drowns once the whole candle turns liquid, or a flame that grows too large as the pool deepens. Start with Eco C1 and compare Eco C2, since CSI publishes no wick chart.
Harder waxes can also change how the wick behaves compared with a soft container wax: a pillar wax or paraffin may need a different wick from the one you would use in a soy jar of similar size. Record release and burn on the same sheet, because the right wax is the one that passes both.
A costed example and the buy-to-test list
Suppose your own votive mould gives a weighed fill of 60 g (your figure; weigh it). At 5% Sandalwood, each votive takes 3 g of oil and 57 g of wax.
In Soy Pillar Wax: 57 g × ₹0.60 per g (₹600.00 ÷ 1,000 g) = ₹34.20; oil 3 g × ₹5.0268 per g (₹5,026.80 ÷ 1,000 g) = ₹15.08; one Eco C1 wick ₹5.90. Total ₹34.20 + ₹15.08 + ₹5.90 = ₹55.18 per votive. In paraffin pellets the wax line becomes 57 g × ₹0.354 per g (₹354.00 ÷ 1,000 g) = ₹20.18, for a total of ₹20.18 + ₹15.08 + ₹5.90 = ₹41.16. Both exclude the holder, packaging, labour, shipping and GST.
The ₹14.02 gap per votive is real, but release rate matters more. A wax that loses one votive in five to chipped edges is not cheaper, whatever it costs per kilogram.
| Item | Pack | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Soy Pillar Wax | 1 kg | ₹600.00 |
| Fully Refined Paraffin Pellets | 1 kg | ₹354.00 |
| Microcrystalline Wax Slab | 500 g | ₹149.00 |
| Vybar | 50 g | ₹156.00 |
| Sandalwood oil (50 g and 100 g out of stock on the pull) | 15 g | ₹93.22 |
| Total | ₹1,352.22 |
Check the total yourself: ₹600.00 + ₹354.00 + ₹149.00 + ₹156.00 + ₹93.22 = ₹1,352.22. Add Eco C1 wicks (₹118.00 for 20), Eco C2 (₹94.40 for 10) and a 10-pack of votive jars (₹318.60) if you need wicks and holders for the burn test. Once one wax releases cleanly and burns well in its holder, buy it in 5 kg or 10 kg packs (Soy Pillar Wax is the same price per kg at every pack), and move the oil to the 1 kg pack.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
