I Want to Reduce Raw-Material Costs by 10% — How Do I Test Cheaper Alternatives Without Risking My Existing Bestselling Candles?
Aktie
Which lever gives the most saving per unit of retest risk? The oil pack-size change, at ₹5.53 per retest point. Next come Soy Pearl (₹1.69), the load cut (₹1.26), CSI 464 (₹0.94) and the wick swap (₹0.51). Ranked table.
Can I reach 10% without a full retest? Not on this candle. After the pack-size saving, the only single change that reaches ₹27.30 is a wax change; the alternative is a wick change plus a load cut. Both are full retests.
How do I protect my bestseller? Leave it on the approved spec. Screen cheaper materials on test candles against it, pilot the winner as a limited batch, and switch only through a change request. The wax screen costs ₹3,227.62.
The cost-per-candle breakdown you are cutting
A cost cut is a set of material changes, and every material change carries a retest bill. The discipline is to find the saving that costs the least evidence first, and to leave the bestseller on its approved formula until the cheaper version has passed. Start with the breakdown. The figures below are CSI listed prices for the example candle, with each material bought the way many small businesses buy it: wax in 1 kg bags, oil in 100 g bottles, Cotton Braided wicks and White Matte jars. The target in the title is the reader's figure, 10%, which here is ₹27.30 per candle.
| Line | Quantity | Rate as bought | Cost per candle | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 184.0 g | ₹599.00 / kg (1 kg bag) | ₹110.22 | 40.4% |
| Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil | 16.0 g | ₹5.00 / g (100 g bottle) | ₹80.00 | 29.3% |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 1 | ₹12.00 each (every pack) | ₹12.00 | 4.4% |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 1 | ₹70.80 each (pack of 5) | ₹70.80 | 25.9% |
| Total | ₹273.02 | 100.0% | ||
| 10% target (reader's figure) | ₹27.30 |
The breakdown already rules some things out. The jar is 25.9% of the candle, but CSI lists no cheaper container with a published fill weight that would hold 200 g: the 200 ml Salsa jar is ₹29.50 each in a pack of 100, but 200 ml is a brim volume, and solid soy wax is lighter than water, so it will not hold a 200 g fill at a sensible line — switching to it changes the product, not its cost. And the wax bag size is not a lever at all on this wax: Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo in 1 kg and 5 kg bags and ₹599.90 in the 10 kg, so moving to the 10 kg bag would change the wax cost by ₹0.17 per candle — slightly more, not less. Excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST, which this page does not price, that leaves five material levers.
Five levers, each with its retest bill
For each lever, the retest matrix below says what happens to the evidence behind the approved candle, in the series vocabulary: KEEP (still valid), CONFIRM (short side-by-side), REPEAT (full retest), NEW (never needed before). To compare levers, the page converts the matrix into retest points on a simple working scale — KEEP 0, CONFIRM 1, REPEAT 3, NEW 4 — summed over six test lines. The scale is ours and deliberately crude; its only job is to put a single number beside the rupees so the levers can be ranked.
| Lever | Load acceptance | Combustion (pool, flame, soot) | Jar heat | Hot & cold throw | Storage (colour, sweat, frost) | End of life | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy Mango Coconut in 1 kg, not 100 g (same listing) | KEEP | CONFIRM | KEEP | CONFIRM | CONFIRM | KEEP | 3 |
| Cut load from 8% to 7% | CONFIRM | CONFIRM | CONFIRM | REPEAT | CONFIRM | KEEP | 7 |
| Cotton Braided → Eco Thin C1 wick | KEEP | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | KEEP | REPEAT | 12 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks → CSI 464 | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | 18 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks → Natural Soy Pearl (5 kg rate) | NEW | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | REPEAT | 19 |
The reasons behind the cells are the ones used throughout this series. Lever A buys the same listing in a bigger bottle: it is the same material by name, but a new order is a new lot and CSI publishes no lot-to-lot consistency, so burn, throw and storage get a CONFIRM. Lever F lowers the load inside the wax's stated ceiling (Chunks up to 13%): throw is the attribute you are deliberately reducing, so it is a REPEAT; burn and storage get a CONFIRM because load can influence them in general practice. Lever C changes the wick: everything about combustion is REPEAT, while storage results belong to the wax and oil and stay valid (the wick-only post explains why). Levers D and E change the wax: everything is REPEAT, and Soy Pearl adds a NEW line because no fragrance ceiling is published for it in this data — ask CSI on WhatsApp and file the answer. The ₹15-a-candle wax post works a single wax switch in more depth.
| Rank | Lever | Saving / candle | % of candle | Retest pts | ₹ per point | Revalidation (example) | Payback, candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Buy Mango Coconut in 1 kg, not 100 g (same listing) | ₹16.58 | 6.1% | 3 | ₹5.53 | ₹1,369.32 | 83 |
| 2 | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks → Natural Soy Pearl (5 kg rate) | ₹32.05 | 11.7% | 19 | ₹1.69 | ₹6,368.67 | 199 |
| 3 | Cut load from 8% to 7% | ₹8.80 | 3.2% | 7 | ₹1.26 | ₹3,385.28 | 385 |
| 4 | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks → CSI 464 | ₹16.85 | 6.2% | 18 | ₹0.94 | ₹5,136.97 | 305 |
| 5 | Cotton Braided → Eco Thin C1 wick | ₹6.10 | 2.2% | 12 | ₹0.51 | ₹4,001.50 | 656 |
The ranking is clear at the top. Buying the oil in 1 kg saves ₹16.58 per candle for three retest points — ₹5.53 per point, several times better than anything else — and pays back its confirmation in 83 candles. It is only possible because Mango Coconut is one of the 24 oils where the 1 kg is at least 5% cheaper per gram than the 100 g (here 20.7%). For most oils it would save almost nothing: of 91 oils listing both sizes, 52 are within ±1% per gram. Check yours before you count on this lever.
Below that the order is less obvious. Soy Pearl ranks second because its saving (₹32.05) is so large that even 19 points of retesting give ₹1.69 per point. The load cut is third: cheap to test, but it saves only ₹8.80 and deliberately weakens the scent — a trade a bestseller's customers may notice. CSI 464 saves ₹16.85 for 18 points. The wick swap is last: ₹6.10 for 12 points, and it touches every safety line. Payback in candles is revalidation cost divided by saving per candle; the hours are labelled examples, so replace them with your own.
Three honest paths to 10%
| Path | Levers | Saving / candle | % of candle | Reaches 10%? | Changes to validate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| — | A only | ₹16.58 | 6.1% | No | One CONFIRM |
| — | A + load cut | ₹23.31 | 8.5% | No | CONFIRM + one partial retest |
| — | A + wick | ₹22.68 | 8.3% | No | CONFIRM + one full combustion retest |
| 1 | A + wick + load cut | ₹29.41 | 10.8% | Yes, just | Two sequential retests |
| 2 | A + CSI 464 | ₹33.43 | 12.2% | Yes | One full wax retest |
| 3 | A + Soy Pearl | ₹48.63 | 17.8% | Yes, with room | One full wax retest + NEW load line |
Two things change once lever A is banked. The load cut is worth less, because the oil you are removing is now cheaper (₹3.96 a gram instead of ₹5.00). And the only single change that reaches 10% on its own is a wax change. That is the honest answer to the title: after the free saving, the rest of a 10% cut on this candle comes from changing the wax or from two smaller changes, and either way it is a full retest. Path 1 spreads the risk over two changes, each testable in turn; paths 2 and 3 concentrate it in one. Testing both candidate waxes at once, as two arms against one control, costs little more than testing one and tells you which, if either, qualifies.
Testing cheaper materials without touching the bestseller
The title's worry is the right one: the bestseller pays the bills and is the worst place to experiment. The protection is procedural. The bestseller stays on its approved specification, untouched, until a cheaper version has passed every line against it on the bench and survived a limited release. Nothing about the cheaper version reaches a customer until then.
| Record | Control (Chunks) | Arm D (CSI 464) | Arm E (Soy Pearl) | Pass if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consumption, g/hour | Within your usual spread of control | |||
| Time to full melt pool | No slower than control | |||
| Flame height at 1 hour | No taller than control | |||
| Soot, mushrooming | No worse than control | |||
| Jar-side feel / reading | No hotter than control | |||
| Hot throw, fixed room, 1–5 | Within one point of control | |||
| Cold throw, surface, colour after storage | Acceptable to your standard | |||
| End of life (one candle per arm) | No worse than control |
Safety acceptance is comparative because CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit: no worse than the approved control on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited one). A saving is never bought with a hotter jar.
The priced wax-screen kit
Nine candles — three per arm — at 200 g and 8% need 144 g of oil (151.2 g with a 5% pour-loss allowance, a labelled working assumption) and 579.6 g of each wax with the same allowance, so a 1 kg bag of each. If you have already bought the 1 kg oil bottle under lever A, draw the test oil from it and drop the first line.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil | 151.2 g incl. 5% | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹843.22 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (control) | 579.6 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹599.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (arm D) | 579.6 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹507.40 |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax (arm E) | 579.6 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹450.00 |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | 9 wicks | 1 × 10 | ₹120.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 9 jars | 2 packs of 5 | ₹708.00 |
| Kit total | ₹3,227.62 |
Set the kit against the saving. At an example 500 candles a month of this SKU, path 2 (A + CSI 464) is worth ₹16,715.20 a month and path 3 (A + Soy Pearl) ₹24,314.40, before the time you spend — which is why the payback column above adds example labour. Even with that, the wax levers pay back within 305 candles; the cost of the kit is not the obstacle. The obstacle is the weeks of curing and burning, which is why a cost-cut project should start well before the season you want the saving in.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 16 g in one candle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | ₹99.43 |
| 50 g | ₹250.00 | ₹5.00 | ₹80.00 |
| 100 g | ₹500.00 | ₹5.00 | ₹80.00 |
| 500 g | ₹1,982.00 | ₹3.96 | ₹63.42 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,964.00 | ₹3.96 | ₹63.42 |
| Pack | Price | Per kg | 200 g candles per bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 kg | ₹450.00 | ₹450.00 | 5.43 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,124.00 | ₹424.80 | 27.17 |
| 10 kg | ₹4,248.00 | ₹424.80 | 54.35 |
| 50 kg | ₹21,240.00 | ₹424.80 | 271.74 |
The decision rule for a cost cut
| Evidence | Decision | Record |
|---|---|---|
| CONFIRM passes (lever A) | Bank the saving from the next batch | Spec: approved pack size added |
| Full retest passes on every line | Pilot as a limited batch beside the approved version | Pilot batch number, complaint log |
| Pilot complaints no higher than the approved version | Switch the SKU through a change request | Spec v-next, cut-over batch |
| Any safety line worse than control | Drop the lever for this SKU | Why, so it is not retried |
| Throw weaker but acceptable to you | Business decision — never silent | Who accepted it, and the scores |
For the wider system this cost cut sits inside — change request, impact assessment, approval, release and monitoring — see the professional change-control system. For keeping cheaper alternates ready rather than chasing them under pressure, pre-qualifying backups applies the same bench test ahead of time, and the specification post shows where an approved alternate is written down once it passes. If the pressure to cut cost is coming from a purchasing team, the procurement-freedom post is worth sharing with them.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Every lever on this page lowers what you spend with us, including a move from our ₹12.00 wick to our ₹5.90 one. We have ranked them by evidence, not by what we would rather sell, and said plainly where bag size saves nothing.
Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-candle costs, savings, combinations and payback are arithmetic on those prices at 200 g and 8%, shown to two decimal rupees.
The retest-point scale, candle counts, labour hours at ₹300.00 an hour, 500 candles a month, 5% pour loss and cure checkpoints are working assumptions you replace. CSI publishes no burn, hardness or throw data for any wax, wick or oil, and no numeric flame or jar-temperature limit. For quotes, stock or documents, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
