CSI Jar & Container Guides · Bulk Buying
A jar listing gives you a capacity and, if you are lucky, an outside dimension. Production needs the inside, the lid, the glass's own weight and how much all of it varies across a batch. Here are the twelve measurements, how to take them, and what each one decides.
12
measurements to take on a sample before a first bulk jar order (our checklist) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What should I measure besides the ml capacity? Twelve things: brim and fill-line capacity by water weight, inside diameter at three heights, outside and base diameter, height and inside depth, wall and base thickness, the mouth and thread, empty weight, lidded height and weight, the label panel, and the spread of each across several jars.

Why, if the supplier gives dimensions? Because listings give outside or unspecified figures. No CSI jar listing states an inside diameter, wall thickness, base thickness or empty-jar weight, and the 200ml Salsa jars state no height or diameter at all.

How many jars should I measure? Our judgement: a sample pack before you order, then ten jars from different cartons when the bulk arrives, with the water-fills on three. Record the lowest and highest of each figure, not only the average.

What does it cost? A 5-jar sample and a scale: ₹908.60 for a Salsa pack, a White Matte pack and the scale together, or ₹554.60 if you own a scale. A ruler, masking tape and a vernier calliper (not sold by CSI) do the rest.
The short answer
The rule: the ml figure tells you how much water a jar holds, usually to the brim. Production needs the usable volume, the inside shape, the lid and the jar's own weight, and they come from your measurements.
The five decisions: fill weight and wax order, wick, lid and headspace, label and net weight, packing and courier. Each measurement feeds at least one (see the diagram).
The spread: glass varies between pieces and batches. Measure several jars and record min–max; one perfect jar tells you nothing about the hundredth.
The money: the Salsa jar is ₹40.12 at 5 Pcs and ₹29.50 at 50 or 100, so the sample costs 6.8% of a 100-jar order. The White Matte is flat ₹70.80, so a sample costs nothing extra per jar.
Twelve measurements, five decisions: what each one is for Filled dot: the decision it mainly drives. Ring: a secondary use. Our judgement. L: sometimes stated on CSI listings. Fill weight & wax order Wick Lid & headspace Label & net weight Packing & courier Measurement Tool 1 Brim capacity (water, g) L scale 2 Fill-line capacity (water, g) scale + tape 3 Inside diameter: top, middle, bottom calliper / ruler 4 Outside diameter and base diameter L calliper 5 Overall height and inside depth L ruler + dowel 6 Wall thickness at the rim calliper 7 Base thickness (height − depth) derived 8 Mouth: inner rim, outer rim, thread L calliper 9 Empty jar weight (tare) scale 10 Lidded height and lidded weightL ruler + scale 11 Label panel (straight wall height) ruler 12 Spread across samples (min to max) your record sheet L: some listings state an outside size, height (some with lid), capacity or cap size. None states inside diameter, wall, base or empty weight. Chips, cracks, bubbles, wobble and cleanliness are quality checks, not measurements: see the QC checklist.
Every measurement on the checklist earns its place by feeding a production decision. The fill-line capacity and the spread across samples feed the most; the inside diameter at three heights is what the wick depends on; the empty weight is what every net-weight check subtracts. The five rows marked L are the only ones a CSI listing sometimes states, and then only as an outside, overall, with-lid or capacity figure.
Straight answer
I'm buying candle jars in bulk for the first time. What measurements do I need besides the supplier's ml capacity?
You need the measurements that production decisions depend on, and a listing rarely gives them. Weigh the water each jar holds to the brim and to your fill line (the usable volume, which sets fill weight and wax order). Measure the inside diameter just below the rim, at mid-height and near the floor (the wick, and whether the jar tapers). Measure outside and base diameter, height and inside depth, and derive wall and base thickness. Measure the mouth and thread for lid fit, weigh the empty jar for net-weight checks, measure lidded height and weight for boxes and courier, and the straight label panel. Then do all of it on several jars and record the lowest and highest, because glass varies between pieces and batches. No CSI listing states an inside diameter, wall or base thickness, or empty-jar weight, so buy a sample pack, measure, and only then order in bulk: for the 200ml Salsa jar the 5 Pcs sample is ₹200.60 against ₹2,950.00 for 100. When the bulk arrives, measure ten jars from different cartons before production.
One line: ml is one number out of twelve; measure the other eleven on a sample pack, then again on the bulk batch.
Measure five before you buy a hundred. The 200ml Salsa jar is ₹40.12 per jar at 5 Pcs and ₹29.50 at 50 or 100, in stock on 26 September 2026: the sample costs ₹200.60, and the bulk price is still there when you have your numbers.
Buy 5 Pcs — ₹200.60

What a jar listing gives you, and what it leaves out

A listing is written to sell a jar. Your checklist is written to fill a hundred of them.

Here are four CSI listings, quoted as their pages state them, against the twelve measurements. We use our own jars deliberately: if our listings leave gaps, so will most.

CSI listings against the checklist · wording quoted from the pages, verified 26 September 2026
What is stated, what is ambiguous, what is missing
Listing Capacity as stated Dimensions as stated Ambiguous Not stated
200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap "The 200ml capacity" 63 mm lug cap only Brim or fill line Height, every diameter, depth, walls, base, empty weight
White Matte Glass Jar "a fill weight of 200 ml" "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" "Fill weight" in ml; width outside or inside Inside diameter, depth, walls, base, mouth, empty weight, lid
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) "150g fill capacity" Height 8 cm; outer diameter 7 cm; base about 6.5 cm; outer rim about 7 cm Curved or straight (page says both); 150 g of what, to where Inside diameter, depth, walls, base, empty weight
Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid "Fill capacity: ~500 g - 700 g (2 sizes)" Height 10.8 cm (13.2 cm with lid); outer rim and base about 10 cm One set of dimensions for two sizes Inside diameter, depth, walls, base, empty weight

Three patterns repeat across the range. Capacity is stated without its basis: ml or g, brim or fill line, water or wax. Dimensions are outside or unspecified: "width", "diameter", "outer rim"; the inside, which is what the wax and the wick see, is never given. Weight of the glass is never given, yet every net-weight check and every courier bill depends on it. None of this is unusual for a jar listing; it is why first-time bulk buyers measure. Why a 200 ml jar is not 200 g of wax is in the fill-weight hub.

Argued against our own interest: do not place a first bulk order on the strength of our listing figures, or anyone's. If you need a figure we do not publish, ask on WhatsApp; if we cannot give it, buy the smallest pack and measure it yourself before you order a hundred.

The twelve-point measurement checklist

Twelve lines, about an hour per jar model, and a record you will use for every reorder.

Tools: a scale that reads single grams, a vernier calliper with inside jaws (any hardware or stationery shop; CSI does not list one), a steel ruler, a straight dowel or skewer, masking tape and a marker. Measure clean, dry, room-temperature jars on a flat surface.

The checklist · how to measure each, and what it decides
Record every line for every sample jar
Measurement Tool How Decides Record
1. Brim capacity Scale Tare the dry empty jar; fill with water until it would overflow; read grams (1 g of water ≈ 1 ml). Whether the listing's ml or g is a brim figure g to the brim
2. Fill-line capacity Scale, masking tape Fit the lid, choose the fill line (commonly 1–1.5 cm below the rim), tape it, tare, fill to the tape. Fill weight (× 0.86–0.9 as an estimate, then a test pour) and the wax order g to the line; line in cm from the rim
3. Inside diameter, three heights Vernier calliper (inside jaws) or a ruler across the inside Measure just below the rim, at mid-height and near the floor. For a ruler, take the widest reading across the centre. Wick bracket; whether the jar tapers three figures in mm
4. Outside and base diameter Calliper Across the widest point and across the base. Compare with the listing's "width" or "diameter". Box, tray and label size; whether the listing figure is outside mm
5. Height and inside depth Ruler, a straight dowel Height on a flat surface. Depth: stand a dowel on the inside floor, mark it at the rim, measure the mark. Headspace, wick length, base thickness cm, to 1 mm
6. Wall thickness at the rim Calliper (Outer rim diameter − inner rim diameter) ÷ 2. Check two points; walls are not always even. Inside diameter where you can't reach; a check on "width" mm
7. Base thickness Derived Height (5) minus inside depth (5). Why "height" overstates wax space mm
8. Mouth and thread Calliper Inner and outer rim; for lug or screw caps, the cap size (the Salsa listing states 63 mm) and whether the lid closes square. Lid fit, centring tools, pouring access mm; lid closes: yes/no
9. Empty jar weight Scale Weigh ten empties from different cartons. Tare for net-weight checks; courier weight g, min and max
10. Lidded height and weight Ruler, scale With the lid on, and again wrapped as you will ship. Box choice; courier actual weight cm, g
11. Label panel Ruler The height of straight wall between shoulder and base curve, and the circumference (tape) at that height. Label size and printing cm
12. Spread across samples Your record sheet Every figure above on several jars; note the lowest and highest. Whether one wick, one fill weight and one label fit the whole batch min–max for each line

The three measurements that change your spend

Fill-line capacity (2) sets your fill weight, and your fill weight sets the wax and oil order. Get it wrong across a hundred jars and you either run short or buy kilograms you cannot use: in the series' worked example, planning 200 g candles for a jar that holds about 150 g means buying wax worth ₹2,334.04 too much per hundred candles at the CSI 464 10 kg price. The method from brim to fill line to finished candle is in My Candle Jar Supplier Lists Capacity in ml but My Candle Formula Is in grams — How Do I Calculate Exactly How Much Wax Each Jar Needs?; the 250 ml headspace version in I Have a 250 ml Glass Jar and Want to Leave Space Below the Lid — How Do I Calculate the Correct Candle Fill Weight?.

Inside diameter at three heights (3) decides the wick bracket, because the melt pool has to reach the glass at the height it forms. If the three readings differ, the jar tapers, and which one to wick for is its own question (My Jar Narrows Toward the Bottom — Should I Select the Wick Based on the Top, Middle or Bottom Internal Diameter?). Why the inside diameter, not ml, drives the wick is in My Candle Jar Holds 200 ml but Has a 7 cm Internal Diameter — Which Measurement Should I Use When Choosing the Wick?.

Empty jar weight (9) is half of every net-weight check. If empties from the same batch differ by several grams, a gross-weight check with one shared tare can hide a short fill; how professionals handle tare when setting a label figure is in How Do Professional Candle Brands Determine the Correct Net Weight to Print on the Label When Using a New Jar?.

When you can't reach the inside
For a narrow neck, measure the outer diameter at the height you need and subtract twice the rim wall thickness (measurement 6). It assumes an even wall, so it is an estimate; confirm with a water-fill, since volume per centimetre in a straight jar is π × r² with the inside radius.

Running the measurement session

One afternoon on the sample, one morning on the bulk batch. Same sheet both times.
1
Number the jars and start a sheetOne row per measurement, one column per jar, plus "min" and "max". Write the listing name, pack, order date and, for the bulk batch, the carton each jar came from.
2
Do all the dry measurements firstEmpty weight, heights, outside and base diameters, rim, mouth, thread, label panel. Water comes last so nothing is measured wet.
3
Measure inside diameter at three marked heightsTape marks just below the rim, at mid-height and about 1 cm above the floor. Take the widest reading across the centre at each.
4
Measure inside depth with a dowel and derive the baseBase thickness = overall height − inside depth. Wall thickness = (outer rim − inner rim) ÷ 2.
5
Water-fill three jars to the brim, then to your lineFit the lid first to set the line. Tare, fill, record; dry the jars completely before they see wax.
6
Wrap one jar as you will ship it and measure againLidded, wrapped height, width and weight: the figures your box and your courier will use.
7
Fill in min and max, then turn the sheet into decisionsFill weight from the lowest fill-line reading, wick bracket from the inside diameters, box from the wrapped size, tare method from the empty-weight spread. Pour test candles before the bulk order.
Mistake: measuring one beautiful jar from the sample and filing the numbers as "the jar". Why it fails: mass-produced glass varies. The jar you measured may be the widest, the lightest or the one with the thinnest base in the batch. Fix: at least three jars for water-fills and five to ten for dimensions and weight, and always write down min and max.

Tolerance: measuring the spread, not the jar

A bulk order is not one jar a hundred times. It is a hundred slightly different jars.

Measurement 12 is the one that makes the other eleven useful. For each line, the question is not "what is it?" but "how much does it move?", because your fill weight, wick and label have to work for the lowest and highest jar, not the average. The bands below are our judgement for a first order, a planning framework, not an industry standard; set your own after your first burn tests.

What the spread means for each decision · our judgement
Where a wide spread should change what you do
Measurement If the spread is small If the spread is wide
Fill-line capacity One fill weight for the batch Pour by weight, not to the tape; set the fill weight from the lowest jar
Inside diameter One wick for the batch Burn-test a wick in the narrowest and the widest jar; sorting and re-wicking a delivered batch is covered in I Received 500 Candle Jars and Some Have Different Internal Diameters — Should I Reject Them If My Wick Was Tested on a Specific Diameter?
Base thickness Fill line in cm from the rim works Fill line from the rim still works; fill weight moves, so weigh
Empty weight An average tare is fine for spot checks Tare each jar before pouring
Mouth / thread One lid stock Test lid fit on the extremes before ordering lids or caps in bulk

Two batches of the same listing may not match. When a reorder arrives, weigh ten empties and water-fill three before you pour, and compare them with your first sheet. Chips, cracks, bubbles, wobble, base flatness and cleanliness are a different job, inspection rather than measurement, and belong on a QC checklist (How Do I Create a Quality-Control Checklist for Glass Candle Jars Before They Enter Production?).

Packing and courier: the measurements people skip

The jar you measured on the bench is not the parcel your courier weighs.

Measurements 4, 9 and 10 decide the box. CSI's corrugated boxes are listed by nominal inch sizes, and their pages do not say whether those are inside or outside dimensions, so treat the conversions below as a first filter and test-fit a wrapped jar.

Nominal box sizes against a 7 cm-wide, 8 cm-tall jar · arithmetic on listed figures
A first filter only: measure your jar lidded and wrapped
Box (as listed) In cm Per box One 7 × 8 cm jar? Note
Corrugated 3 Ply box 2.5 x 2 x 2.5 Inch 6.35 × 5.08 × 6.35 ₹16.80 No: narrower than the jar For votives and minis only
Corrugated 3 ply box 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 Inch 11.43 × 7.62 × 6.35 Out of stock on 26 September 2026 — Not buyable
Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 Inch 17.78 × 12.70 × 10.16 ₹26.72 Yes, upright with room for wrap Two side by side leave under 4 cm for padding along the long side

Couriers commonly bill on actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher; check your courier's terms, as rates and formulas vary. That makes two measurements matter: the wrapped jar's weight (the glass is usually the heaviest part, and no listing states it) and the box's outside dimensions. For wrap, the Air Bubble Roll (₹900.00) is in stock; more options are in the packaging collection. How to make a 200 g candle look substantial without a heavy parcel is its own question (I Want My 200 g Candle to Look Substantial Without Dramatically Increasing Packaging and Courier Weight — What Type of Jar Should I Choose?).

Sample packs and tools

Candle Making Weighing Scale
Four of the twelve measurements are weighings: brim water, fill-line water, empty jar and lidded jar. The page describes a digital scale showing "grams or ounces" with "simple one-button operation" and states no maximum capacity or reading step; a jar full of water can weigh several hundred grams, so check the unit's marking before you rely on it. For first-time bulk buyers who have been measuring with a jug. Argued against our own interest: a kitchen scale that reads single grams and has a tare button will do this job; you do not need ours.

jar · the one with a real bulk price break
200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap (Golden Lid)
The page states "The 200ml capacity", a golden 63 mm lug cap, a "wide mouth opening" and "Heat Resistant Glass… withstands the heat of hot wax without cracking or warping" (the page's claim, no figure). It states no height or diameter at all, and calls the jar "upcycled", so every line of the checklist applies. It is one of the few CSI jars that gets cheaper in bulk: ₹40.12 per jar at 5 Pcs, ₹29.50 at 50 or 100, 26.5% less. That is exactly why to measure five before buying a hundred. Limitation: a threaded neck and shoulder make its fill-line capacity (measurement 2) the one to watch.

jar · flat pack price, two dimensions listed
White Matte Glass Jar
The page states "a fill weight of 200 ml" and "Height 8 cm width 7 cm", and "withstand high heat" (no figure). "Width" does not say outside or inside, and "fill weight" is given in ml. Its price is flat, ₹70.80 per jar at 5 or 10, so there is no bulk saving to lose by measuring a pack of 5 first; for more than the listed packs, ask on WhatsApp. Matte and frosted sisters share the listing text; several carry copied colour names, so confirm the colour you order. Limitation: a matte finish makes the fill line hard to see from outside, so mark it with tape measured from the rim.

Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
The page states "150g fill capacity", height 8 cm, outer diameter 7 cm, outer rim about 7 cm, base about 6.5 cm, a golden metal lid and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C": more than most listings. It still gives no inside diameter, wall or base thickness, or empty weight, and it describes the jar as both curved and straight-sided, so measurement 3 at three heights matters. ₹94.40 per jar at 10 or 20. For buyers who want a lidded jar with a numeric heat statement. Limitation: smallest pack is 10.

packaging · measurements 4 and 10 decide it
Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 Inch (Pack of 50)
The page describes "Tab lock boxes" of "size 7x5x4" in "sturdy corrugated cardboard". It does not say whether those are inside or outside dimensions, so treat them as nominal. At 17.78 × 12.70 × 10.16 cm, it could take one jar of about 8 cm height upright with room for wrap, or two 7 cm-wide jars side by side with under 4 cm to share for padding, on nominal figures. The smaller 2.5 x 2 x 2.5 Inch box (6.35 × 5.08 × 6.35 cm) is narrower than a 7 cm jar; the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 Inch box is out of stock on 26 September 2026. Limitation: measure your jar with lid and wrap before ordering 50.

Wick Centering Device (Pack of 5)
The page states a length of 4.4 inches (11.4 cm), a 9 mm width and a 4 mm hole, and says the holders suit openings of less than 4 inches (about 10 cm). So the mouth measurement (8) tells you whether it spans your jar: a 7 cm rim is well inside it. It holds the wick straight while the wax sets; it does not choose the wick. For buyers setting up production on a new jar. Limitation: no size options; jars wider than about 10 cm across need a different holder.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers
Pack of 5 ₹118.00 ₹23.60 five jars setting at once
Measure the mouth; check it spans. Buy 5 holders — ₹118.00
When the right purchase is nothing: if you already own the jars you plan to reorder, you need no sample: measure ten from your current stock tonight with a ruler, a scale and tape, and bring the sheet to your bulk enquiry. The only thing you cannot measure at home is whether the next batch matches, so ask the supplier (us included) to confirm it is the same glass.

The CSI principle
Buy the sample to measure the jar. Measure the bulk to find out whether it is the same jar.
A listing gives you one or two outside figures. Production needs the inside, the lid, the glass's own weight and the spread across a batch, and only your ruler and scale can supply them.
"The ml figure is where a jar listing starts. It is also, very often, where it stops."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, scale and boxes named here and does not sell finished candles. This guide uses our own listings as the examples of what jar pages leave out, and tells you to buy the smallest pack and measure before a bulk order.

Every price and per-unit figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in the pick tables was in stock on that date, and the out-of-stock 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 Inch box is flagged. Listing wording is quoted; where a page is silent (inside diameter, wall and base thickness, empty weight, box basis), we say so.

The twelve-point checklist, the sample sizes, the spread bands and the diagram's primary and secondary links are editorial judgement; the 0.86–0.9 factor and 1–1.5 cm fill line are rules of thumb; the box conversions are arithmetic on nominal listed sizes. Frequently asked questions

What measurements do I need before buying candle jars in bulk?
Brim and fill-line capacity by water weight, inside diameter at top, middle and bottom, outside and base diameter, height and inside depth, wall and base thickness, mouth and thread, empty weight, lidded height and weight, the label panel, and the spread of each across several jars.
How do I measure the inside diameter of a candle jar?
Use a vernier calliper's inside jaws, or a ruler across the centre taking the widest reading, just below the rim, at mid-height and near the floor. Where you can't reach, subtract twice the rim wall thickness from the outside diameter as an estimate.
Is the diameter on a jar listing the inside or the outside?
Usually outside or unspecified. CSI listings give "width", "diameter" or "outer rim"; none states an inside diameter. Measure the inside yourself, because that is what the wax and the wick see.
How many sample jars should I measure before a bulk order?
Our judgement: water-fill at least three and measure dimensions and weight on five to ten, recording min and max. When the bulk arrives, repeat on ten jars from different cartons.
Why do I need the empty weight of a candle jar?
Every net-weight check subtracts it, and couriers weigh it. No CSI listing states an empty-jar weight, and jars from one batch differ, so weigh ten and note the spread.
Are CSI candle jars cheaper in bulk?
Some are. The 200ml Salsa clear jar is ₹40.12 per jar at 5 Pcs and ₹29.50 at 50 or 100. Many listings, including the White Matte (₹70.80) and Clear 150 gram (₹94.40), are flat per jar across packs; ask on WhatsApp for larger quantities.
Your first bulk order, measured
Five jars, a scale, a ruler and an afternoon.
Buy the smallest pack of the jar you want, run the twelve-point checklist on it, and test-pour before you order a hundred. When the bulk arrives, measure ten from different cartons against the same sheet before the first production pour.

About this guide: part of CSI's jar-size, capacity and wax-quantity cluster. It sets out the measurements a first-time bulk jar buyer needs besides the supplier's ml capacity (brim and fill-line capacity, inside diameter at three heights, outside and base diameter, height and depth, wall and base thickness, mouth and thread, empty weight, lidded size and weight, label panel, and the spread across samples), how to take each, what production decision each feeds, and a costed sample-to-bulk sequence.

Non-price figures: listing wording as stated on the product pages; no CSI listing states an inside diameter, wall or base thickness, or empty-jar weight. Box sizes are converted from nominal inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm); the pages do not say inside or outside. The checklist, sample sizes, spread bands and diagram links are editorial judgement; the 0.86–0.9 factor and 1–1.5 cm fill line are rules of thumb. The over-buy figure uses the series' standard 200 ml worked example (150 g at 8% vs an assumed 200 g). Dates are calendar facts. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST unless stated.
