I'm Currently Buying Soy Wax in 5 Kg Packs and Making 300 Candles a Month — When Does Moving to 25 Kg Cartons Actually Make Financial Sense?
Aktie
Does CSI sell 25 kg cartons? No. Container soy-wax bags stop at 10 kg; Natural Soy Pearl goes to 50 kg (limited stock — confirm on WhatsApp). Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
Is CSI's 10 kg bag cheaper than 5 kg? Not for Chunks: two 5 kg bags cost ₹9.00 less than one 10 kg. CSI 464 is flat at ₹507.40/kg; CSI 468 is ₹637.00/kg at both. See the ladder.
How much wax do 300 candles use? 55.20 kg net at 200 g and 8% (184 g wax each), 57.96 kg with a 5% working allowance — 12 × 5 kg bags.
The short answer: a carton pays only when its per-kg price is lower
Makers ask this question as if pack size were the decision. It is not. At 300 candles a month you are already a volume buyer: a 200 g candle at an 8% load is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil, so the month needs 55.20 kg of wax before any allowance and 57.96 kg once you add a 5% working allowance for pour loss and test candles. That is twelve 5 kg bags. A 25 kg carton, if a supplier offers one, would last you 12.9 days. You would empty two of them and start a third before the month ends.
So the usual arguments for cartons — "stock up", "save on bulk" — barely apply at your volume. You are not tying up months of cash in a carton; you are tying up less than a fortnight. What decides the question is simpler: is the carton's price per kilogram lower than your 5 kg price, and by enough to cover any extra freight, handling and storage you pay to get it? If yes, and the carton is the same wax you already approved, it makes financial sense almost immediately. If the carton is the same price per kilogram, it makes no financial sense at all — only a convenience case.
Here is the part we have to be plain about. CSI does not list a 25 kg carton. Our container soy-wax bags stop at 10 kg, and Natural Soy Pearl goes to 50 kg (listed, in limited stock — confirm on WhatsApp before you plan around it). Within the listed ladder, moving up a pack size saves nothing on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — the 10 kg bag is ₹599.90 a kilo, dearer than the 1 kg bag — nothing on CSI 464, which is flat at ₹507.40 a kilo, and ₹13.00 a kilo on CSI 468 once you reach 5 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only soy wax on the list with a real bulk break, ₹450.00 to ₹424.80 a kilo, and it arrives at 5 kg. Anything larger than the listed packs is a WhatsApp quote, and we publish no volume discount figure.
CSI's real pack ladder, wax by wax
Before any carton maths, look at what the listed packs actually do. The table below takes every listed CSI container soy-wax pack and turns it into a price per kilogram, then compares it with the same wax's 1 kg bag. The last column shows how many 200 g candles (184 g of wax at 8%) each pack makes. Read it slowly, because it overturns the assumption most buyers bring to the question.
| Wax · pack | Price | Per kg | vs 1 kg per kg | Candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chunks · 500 g | ₹299.00 | ₹598.00 | −₹1.00 | 2.72 |
| Chunks · 1 kg | ₹599.00 | ₹599.00 | — | 5.43 |
| Chunks · 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 | ₹599.00 | same | 27.17 |
| Chunks · 10 kg | ₹5,999.00 | ₹599.90 | +₹0.90 | 54.35 |
| CSI 464 · 500 g | ₹260.00 | ₹520.00 | +₹12.60 | 2.72 |
| CSI 464 · 1 kg | ₹507.40 | ₹507.40 | — | 5.43 |
| CSI 464 · 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 | ₹507.40 | same | 27.17 |
| CSI 464 · 10 kg | ₹5,074.00 | ₹507.40 | same | 54.35 |
| CSI 468 · 500 g | ₹325.00 | ₹650.00 | same | 2.72 |
| CSI 468 · 1 kg | ₹650.00 | ₹650.00 | — | 5.43 |
| CSI 468 · 5 kg | ₹3,185.00 | ₹637.00 | −₹13.00 | 27.17 |
| CSI 468 · 10 kg | ₹6,370.00 | ₹637.00 | −₹13.00 | 54.35 |
| Soy Pearl · 1 kg | ₹450.00 | ₹450.00 | — | 5.43 |
| Soy Pearl · 5 kg | ₹2,124.00 | ₹424.80 | −₹25.20 | 27.17 |
| Soy Pearl · 10 kg | ₹4,248.00 | ₹424.80 | −₹25.20 | 54.35 |
| Soy Pearl · 50 kg (limited stock — confirm on WhatsApp) | ₹21,240.00 | ₹424.80 | −₹25.20 | 271.74 |
Three things stand out. First, Chunks get fractionally dearer as the bag gets bigger. The 500 g bag works out at ₹598.00 a kilo, the 1 kg and 5 kg bags at ₹599.00, and the 10 kg bag at ₹599.90. Two 5 kg bags cost ₹5,990.00; one 10 kg bag costs ₹5,999.00 — ₹9.00 more for the same 10 kg. Second, CSI 464 is flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg; only the 500 g bag carries a premium (₹520.00 a kilo). Third, the two waxes with a real step both take it at 5 kg and then stop: CSI 468 at ₹637.00 a kilo (2.0% under the 1 kg rate) and Soy Pearl at ₹424.80 (5.6% under).
For you, already buying 5 kg bags, that means you have already captured every listed per-kg saving there is. The 10 kg bag gives you fewer bags to open and fewer lines on an order, not a lower rate. When the supplier charges more for 10 kg packs than 25 kg cartons works through the case where a supplier's ladder does run downhill, and what ₹20, ₹50 or ₹100 a kilo means on 100 kg turns per-kg gaps into whole-order rupees.
Your month at 300 candles, priced in 5 kg and 10 kg bags
Here is the monthly wax order at 300 candles, using the CSI convention that fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = 200 g × 8% = 16 g; wax = 184 g). The 5% allowance covers pour loss and a handful of test candles — a labelled working assumption you should replace with your own figure once you have tracked a few months. Every wax is shown in both pack sizes so you can see that, for this question, the wax you choose moves the bill far more than the bag you buy it in.
| Wax | 12 × 5 kg | 6 × 10 kg | Difference | Per candle (wax only) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chunks | ₹35,940.00 | ₹35,994.00 | ₹54.00 more | ₹110.22 |
| CSI 464 | ₹30,444.00 | ₹30,444.00 | same | ₹93.36 |
| CSI 468 | ₹38,220.00 | ₹38,220.00 | same | ₹117.21 |
| Soy Pearl | ₹25,488.00 | ₹25,488.00 | same | ₹78.16 |
| Soy Pearl · 1 × 50 kg + 1 × 10 kg | ₹25,488.00 | — | same rate (limited stock) | ₹78.16 |
The gap between the cheapest and dearest wax in that table is ₹12,732.00 a month; the gap between pack sizes is at most ₹54.00. That is the real lesson for a 300-candle maker. If your goal is a lower wax bill, the lever is not the carton, it is the wax — and switching wax is a formulation change that needs a proper test, not a purchasing decision. Choosing on cost per kilo versus cost per saleable candle and the full commercial cost of a soy wax set out why a cheaper wax that needs more oil, a different wick or more rework can end up dearer per saleable candle.
When a carton offer actually pays: the break-even per kilo
Suppose a supplier — any supplier — offers you a 25 kg carton of a wax you have already qualified, at a lower price per kilogram than your 5 kg bags. The saving is easy: discount per kg × the kilograms you use. At 57.96 kg a month, every ₹10 off a kilo is ₹579.60 a month. The cost is less obvious: buying 25 kg at once instead of 5 kg means you hold more wax on average, and that stock is cash sitting on a shelf. A simple way to price it is average extra stock × price per kilo × a monthly holding rate. We use 1.5% a month as an example rate — replace it with your own cost of money, rent and risk.
| Carton discount (example) | Monthly saving | Yearly saving | Saving per candle | Beats holding cost of 25 kg? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10.00 per kg | ₹579.60 | ₹6,955.20 | ₹1.84 | Yes — holding about ₹89.85/month |
| ₹20.00 per kg | ₹1,159.20 | ₹13,910.40 | ₹3.68 | Yes — holding about ₹89.85/month |
| ₹30.00 per kg | ₹1,738.80 | ₹20,865.60 | ₹5.52 | Yes — holding about ₹89.85/month |
| ₹50.00 per kg | ₹2,898.00 | ₹34,776.00 | ₹9.20 | Yes — holding about ₹89.85/month |
At your volume the holding cost of a 25 kg carton is tiny: about ₹89.85 a month at the example rate, because you only ever hold an extra ten kilos on average. The break-even discount is therefore just ₹1.55 a kilo. For a 100 kg lot it rises to about ₹426.79 a month and a break-even of ₹7.36 a kilo — still small, because 100 kg is only 51.8 days of your wax. In plain terms: at 300 candles a month, almost any genuine per-kg discount on an approved wax pays for the stock it makes you hold. What it does not pay for is a wax you have not tested, a carton you have nowhere dry to store, or freight that eats the discount.
| Candles / month | Wax / month | 25 kg lasts | 100 kg lasts | Break-even, 25 kg | Break-even, 100 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 19.32 kg | 38.8 days | 155.3 days | ₹4.65 | ₹22.09 |
| 200 | 38.64 kg | 19.4 days | 77.6 days | ₹2.33 | ₹11.05 |
| 300 | 57.96 kg | 12.9 days | 51.8 days | ₹1.55 | ₹7.36 |
| 500 | 96.60 kg | 7.8 days | 31.1 days | ₹0.93 | ₹4.42 |
The pattern is the useful part. At 100 candles a month a 25 kg carton is more than five weeks of stock and the break-even discount roughly triples; at 500 candles it is barely a week and almost any saving is worth taking. Below roughly 100 candles a month, the carton question really is a cash and storage question — the 20 kg-a-month post deals with it. Above it, the questions become safety stock and order cadence: 50 kg a month with a one-week lead time and 100 kg a month: monthly, fortnightly or bulk.
The pack-change check: 3 candles from the new pack against 3 controls
Moving from bags to cartons, or from one pack size to another, should not change the wax. But you cannot see that from the outside, and nobody — CSI included — publishes lot numbers, certificates of analysis or batch-consistency data for soy wax. So the first bag or carton of a new size or a new order gets the same short check every time: three candles from the new pack poured beside three control candles from your approved stock (a retained sample of the last good bag, or the bag you are finishing). Same oil lot, same wick pack, same jar, same day.
| Line | How you record it | Control | New pack | Pass rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Appearance on arrival | Shade and smell vs retained sample | — | ___ | Matches control |
| Pour and set | Tops, sinkholes, glass adhesion after cooling | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Time to full melt pool | Minutes from lighting | ___ | ___ | Within your set tolerance |
| Melt-pool depth | Ruler at end of burn | ___ cm | ___ cm | No deeper than control |
| Flame and soot | Height mid-burn; mushroom 0–3 | ___ | ___ | Safety: no worse than control |
| Jar-side reading | Same point, same thermometer, same minute | ___ | ___ | Safety: no hotter than control |
| Hot throw (blind) | 0–5 at 1 m, fixed room | ___ | ___ | Equal or better |
| Shelf candle after cure | Sweating, frosting, wet spots | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
The materials for this check are small. The wax comes from the new pack itself and from your control stock, so you only buy oil, wicks and jars: 100.8 g of British Rose (six candles at 16 g plus 5%), ten Eco Thin C1 wicks and two packs of White Matte jars. If you also want to test Soy Pearl as a cheaper candidate against your Chunks — the biggest real saving on CSI's list — add three Pearl candles and a 1 kg bag.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 100.8 g | 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹436.60 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 6 + 2 spare | 1 × 10 | ₹59.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 6 jars | 2 packs of 5 | ₹708.00 |
| Kit, wax from the new pack and your control | ₹1,203.60 | ||
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax (optional candidate) | 579.6 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹450.00 |
| Kit with a Soy Pearl candidate | ₹1,653.60 |
If you run the Pearl candidate, it needs its own wick check as well — a different wax can ask for a different wick — so treat three candles as the first screen, not an approval. Why one successful kilo is not enough for 100 kg and whether to run a 5 kg or 10 kg production trial take a candidate from bench test to production quantity.
The waxes worth pricing at your volume
These are candidates, not verdicts. CSI publishes no burn, throw, hardness or frosting data that would rank one of its waxes above another, so the only claims below are prices, pack sizes and what each product page states. Which one belongs in your candle is decided by the side-by-side test against your current wax.
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Candles at 184.0 g wax |

What a carton discount does to your cost per candle
Keep the size of the prize in proportion. At the 5 kg Chunks rate, your candle carries ₹110.22 of wax, ₹49.09 of British Rose at its 1 kg rate, a ₹5.90 wick and a ₹70.80 jar — ₹236.00 of materials before labour, packaging, freight and GST. A ₹20-a-kilo carton discount takes ₹3.68 off that, or 1.6%. A ₹50 discount takes ₹9.20, or 3.9%. Worth having, but not something that rescues a thin margin on its own.
| Line | Basis | Per candle | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 184 g Chunks at ₹599.00/kg (5 kg bag) | ₹110.22 | 46.7% |
| Fragrance | 16 g British Rose at ₹3.07/g (1 kg) | ₹49.09 | 20.8% |
| Wick | Eco Thin C1 | ₹5.90 | 2.5% |
| Jar | White Matte Glass Jar | ₹70.80 | 30.0% |
| Total | ₹236.00 | 100.0% | |
| Example carton discount ₹20/kg | 184 g × ₹20.00 | −₹3.68 | 1.6% |
| Same wax switched to Soy Pearl at 5 kg (needs testing) | 184 g × ₹174.20 less | −₹32.05 | 13.6% |
Two conclusions follow. A modest carton discount on the wax you already use is real money over a year and almost free to capture at your volume — so ask for it. But a lower-priced wax, properly tested, can move cost per candle several times more than any carton, and the jar is a bigger line than either. The 1,000-candle COGS post runs this comparison at order scale, and how much of a ₹799 selling price wax should take puts it against a real price point.
The decision rule, and the order it ends in
Use the rule below in order. It is written so that the answer comes out the same whoever applies it, and so that a cheaper offer never skips the test.
| If… | Then | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The bigger pack's per-kg price is the same or higher than your 5 kg price | Stay on 5 kg bags | No saving to capture (Chunks, CSI 464, CSI 468 and Soy Pearl above 5 kg on CSI's list) |
| A carton of the same approved wax is cheaper by more than your break-even per kg, after freight | Buy the carton; run the 3 + 3 pack-change check on the first one | At 300 candles the break-even is about ₹1.55/kg for 25 kg |
| The cheaper offer is a different wax | Test first — 3-candle screen, then a pilot batch | It is a formulation change, not a purchase |
| You have no dry, cool space for the larger quantity | Stay smaller until you do | Damp or heat-damaged stock wipes out any discount |
| You keep running out | Fix the reorder point before the pack size | Reorder points: 5474 |
For the reader who asked: if your approved wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, your order this month is 12 × 5 kg (₹35,940.00), not six 10 kg bags. If you want a lower per-kg rate than CSI's listed packs, send us your real monthly kilograms on WhatsApp and ask for a quote; we publish no volume discount figure, so compare whatever comes back with the break-even above. And if you want the biggest listed saving, buy one 1 kg bag of Natural Soy Pearl (₹450.00) and run the three-candle screen against your Chunks before you think about 5 kg bags of it.

This page is the hub for twenty questions about moving from 5 kg bags to 25 kg cartons and 100 kg lots. Each sibling starts from a different monthly volume or a different decision — stock cover, safety stock, cadence, first-carton checks, scale-up evidence, buffers, COGS, MOQs and procurement rules — and every one uses the same honest frame: CSI's listed packs, the reader's own carton or discount figures labelled as theirs, and a test before a new pack or lot goes into production.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A wax seller's easy answer to a bulk question is "buy bigger". On our own list that answer is wrong for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — the 10 kg bag costs more per kilo than the 5 kg — and we say so. We publish no lot, burn or consistency data for our waxes, so we never ask you to trust a new pack without the check on this page.
Wax prices are CSI live pricing re-checked on 1 October 2026 (unchanged from the 24–25 September pull, all listed sizes in stock). Oil prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026.
