I'm Launching a Premium Candle Brand in India — How Should I Select 6–10 Fragrances That Smell Distinctive but Also Perform Well?
Aktie
What makes a line distinctive? No two scents sharing a base. Distinctiveness is an adjacency property, not a per-scent one — a customer smelling three woody-amber candles remembers one candle. Read the published pyramids side by side before you buy anything, because 88 of 107 CSI oil pages state a full top / heart / base structure.
How do I know they will perform? You do not, before you pour. What you can verify beforehand is the published evidence — a stated candle load, a measured flash point, a vanillin figure, a cure time — and what you must do afterwards is test all eight identically. The matrix below scores what is knowable and leaves one column blank for the test.
What does the selection cost? ₹895.06 for eight 15 gm bottles to shortlist, then ₹5,459.92 for a sixteen-jar qualification at two jars per scent — ₹6,354.98 to launch a range you can actually defend.
How many, and what shape
The constraint on a launch range is not imagination, it is qualification capacity. Every scent you add is another two-jar test, another fourteen-day cure, another wick verdict, another minimum order quantity to hold, and another SKU that can be out of stock when a customer asks for it. Eight is where most first-year premium brands land, because eight supports a three-candle gift set, a seasonal rotation and two scents that exist purely to be unlike anything else — while still fitting inside one sixteen-jar test and one carton of jars.
| Role | Count | What it has to do | Fragrance budget per 150 g candle at 10% | Pack size to hold |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anchor | 3 — one floral, one woody, one fresh-warm | Sell every month, in every set, to every customer. Must be easy to wick, safe in pale wax, and cheap enough per candle to subsidise the signatures. | Aim under ₹85 — here ₹46.02, ₹75.40 and ₹81.56 | 500 gm or 1 kg; these are the bottles you reorder |
| Seasonal | 3 — spring, monsoon or autumn, festive or winter | Create a reason to come back. Allowed to be polarising. Must be decided months ahead: Diwali 2026 is 8 November, so a festive scent is a July decision, not an October one. | ₹56.07 to ₹90.27 across the three here | 100 gm to 500 gm, sized to one season's run |
| Signature | 2 | Be the reason someone chooses you over the shelf beside you. Priced as the top of the range, described in their own words, and never discounted. | ₹113.99 and ₹136.80 — carried by the anchors | 100 gm first, 500 gm only after the second reorder |
One arithmetic note that changes how the range is priced. Non-fragrance materials in this worked candle are constant across all eight SKUs — 135 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹80.99, a 150 g golden-lid jar at ₹94.40, an Eco C2 wick at ₹9.44 and a wick sticker at ₹2.50, or ₹187.33. So the total materials in a candle run from ₹233.35 for the British Rose anchor to ₹324.13 for Santal Noir. A single shelf price across the range squeezes the signatures; a two-tier price does the opposite and is usually the better answer for a premium brand.
The selection matrix
Score each candidate out of 5 on the five things you can verify from the page and the price, weight them, and use the total to decide what to pour — not what to launch. The sixth column, performance, is deliberately left blank until the sixteen-jar test fills it in. Any matrix that scores performance before the pour is fiction.
| Axis | Weight | How to score it out of 5, before you buy | Why it matters to a premium brand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distinctiveness within your line | ×3 | Read the published pyramid against every scent already in your shortlist. 5 = shares no base note with anything else; 1 = a third woody-amber | The customer compares your candles with each other before they compare you with anyone else |
| Published evidence | ×3 | One point each for: a stated candle load, a measured flash point, a stated vanillin figure, a stated cure time, a full note pyramid | A silent page is workable but shifts the burden onto your own testing and your SDS request |
| Discolouration risk in your wax colour | ×2 | 5 = page states 0% vanillin and no discolouration; 3 = page states nothing; 1 = page states vanillin present or names browning notes | A premium brand in pale wax has a colour problem long before it has a throw problem |
| Fragrance cost per candle | ×2 | 5 = under ₹55 at your load and vessel; 1 = over ₹130 | Two expensive signatures are only affordable if the anchors are efficient |
| Supply continuity | ×2 | 5 = every size from 15 gm to 1 kg listed and in stock; lower for missing sizes or sold-out variants | A launch SKU you cannot reorder in month three is worse than one you never launched |
| Performance after cure | ×4 | Leave blank. Filled in from the sixteen-jar test: minutes to full pool, soot, cold throw and hot throw at day 14 on a 1–5 scale | It carries the heaviest weight and it is the only axis you cannot buy an answer to |
The eight, and what their pages publish
One worked shortlist, chosen to satisfy the architecture and the no-shared-base rule, with every published figure quoted and every blank named as a blank. Prices are 1 kg pricing; the fragrance cost column is 15 g in a 150 g candle at a 10% load, and where a page states a lower ceiling that ceiling governs.
| Scent | Role | Stated base notes | Stated candle load | Stated flash point | Stated vanillin | 1 kg | 15 g in a candle |

Distinctive is an adjacency property
This is the part of range-building most brands get wrong, and it is not a matter of taste. A customer does not encounter your fragrances one at a time against the world's catalogue — they encounter them as a set, in one sitting, on one shelf or in one gift box. Three candles that all resolve to amber and musk are not three products; they are one product with three labels, and the customer will buy one and remember none.
So build the line on a rule rather than a mood: no two scents may share a base, and no more than two may sit in the same scent family. Then check it before you buy, because 88 of 107 CSI oil pages publish a full pyramid and 102 publish notes of some kind — the evidence is free.
| Scent | Published base direction | Family | Collision risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | Soft floral, green undertones (single note) | Floral | None in this set |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom | Sandalwood, musk | Floral / sweet | Shares a woody-musk base with Santal Noir — keep them in different seasons or different sets |
| Roasted Coffee | Vanilla, caramel | Gourmand | None here, but do not add a second vanilla-based scent to this line |
| Sandalwood | Creamy sandalwood, earthy depth | Woody | Adjacent to Santal Noir — the pair needs a Gate-2 blind comparison before both launch |
| Bergamot Amber | Woody musk, smooth vanilla | Fresh-warm | Adjacent to Roasted Coffee's vanilla; positions differently, so test them side by side |
| Palo Santo | Warm amber, incense | Resinous woody | Adjacent to Bergamot Amber's amber — the incense accord is what separates them |
| Neroli Signature Grade | White musk, soft woods, amber | Neroli / white floral | Amber again — three ambers in a set of eight is the ceiling, not the target |
| Santal Noir | Warm amber, musk, dry woods | Woody | The most contested base in the set; it earns its place only if the blind comparison says it does |
Notice what that table did: it turned an aesthetic argument into three named tests — Sandalwood against Santal Noir, Bergamot Amber against Roasted Coffee, and Palo Santo against Bergamot Amber. Each of those pairs shares something in its published base, and each is a candidate for being one SKU too many. Run them as blind pairs at day 14 with people who do not know which is which, and cut the loser. A line of seven that nobody confuses is worth more than a line of eight with a duplicate in it.
Qualifying eight scents, costed
One wax, one vessel, one wick, one load, one cure, two jars per scent. Sixteen jars, one pouring session, one score sheet. The load for this qualification is 10% where the page permits it and 8% where the page states nothing — and the second jar in each pair exists so that a surprising result can be checked rather than believed.
| Line | Quantity | Cost | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 gm screening bottles | 8 | ₹895.06 | ₹93.22 to ₹166 each; the whole shortlist for less than four finished candles |
| 50 gm bottles for the pour | 8 | ₹2,462.70 | 30 g used per scent across two jars, with a margin for a repour |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 2,160 g (16 × 135 g) | ₹1,295.78 | At ₹0.5999/g, 10 kg pricing — a 5 kg bag at ₹2,995 covers it with plenty over |
| 150 g golden-lid jars | 16 | ₹1,510.40 | ₹94.40 each at pack of 10; buy 20 for ₹1,888 and keep four spares |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) | 16 | ₹151.04 | ₹9.44 each at 100 |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 16 | ₹40 | ₹2.50 each at 40 per sheet |
| Sixteen-jar qualification | ₹5,459.92 | Excludes the screening bottles | |
| Screen plus qualification | ₹6,354.98 | The whole selection, and sixteen candles you can photograph |
Set that against what it replaces. Buying 500 gm of each of eight scents on instinct is ₹22,721.40 of oil before a single candle has been burned, and any scent that fails is a bottle you will never finish. The selection above costs a little over a quarter of that, ends with a filled-in matrix, and leaves you buying 500 gm only of the scents that earned it.
The pack ladder and the cull rule
Three rungs, and a scent may only climb one when it has passed the gate below. 15 gm to shortlist. 50 gm or 100 gm to qualify and to run a first small batch. 500 gm or 1 kg only after the scent has been reordered by customers, not by you. On most oils in the shortlist the per-gram price falls as you climb, so the ladder costs you something — but far less than a 1 kg bottle of a scent that turned out to be your duplicate.
| Rung | When to buy it | Cheapest and dearest in this shortlist | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 gm | Shortlisting on card, before any wax | ₹93.22 (Sandalwood, Roasted Coffee) to ₹166 (Santal Noir) | Cards and one small jar; not enough to pour a real test |
| 50 gm | The two-jar qualification | ₹212.40 (British Rose) to ₹499 (Santal Noir) | Two 150 g candles at 10%, with a margin for a repour |
| 100 gm | First small batch of a signature, or a third test arm | ₹342.20 (British Rose) to ₹919 (Santal Noir) | Six 150 g candles at 10% |
| 500 gm | An anchor after the qualification, a seasonal before its season | ₹1,593 (British Rose) to ₹4,599 (Santal Noir) | 33 candles at 15 g each |
| 1 kg | Anchors only, once customers are reordering | ₹3,068 (British Rose) to ₹9,120 (Santal Noir) | 66 candles at 15 g each — the largest listed fragrance pack |
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and a supplier's incentive on a page like this one is to talk a founder into ten or twelve scents at 500 gm each — ₹22,721.40 of oil for eight, more for twelve. This guide argues for eight scents, 15 gm bottles, a written cull rule and the smallest bottle that will answer the question, because a brand whose eight SKUs all work reorders for years and one that launched twelve untested scents stops trading.
Every price and specification here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing and availability always take precedence. Note pyramids, candle loads, flash points, vanillin figures and cure times are quoted verbatim where the page states them and named as blanks where it does not — three of the eight scents publish no flash point, and we have not estimated one from a similar scent or a datasheet. No page publishes lab, GC-MS or third-party test results, so nothing on this page infers performance or quality from price. Stated loads are formulation guidance, not regulatory limits. The scoring matrix and the test are protocols for you to run; no throw score or preference result here is a measurement we are reporting.
