Quick answers — read this first
Why can't I pick the wick from the first burn in a heavy-based 200 g jar? Because the first burn only tests the top of the candle. A heavy glass base commonly stores heat and changes the last centimetres of the burn, where late-burn problems commonly show. Burn 1 can't see the base.

What does a full-life test cost? Three 200 g candles on the wick you chose, 8% Bergamot Amber in CSI 464: ₹577.20 in materials and, in our worked example, about 11–15 days. From nothing, ₹1,161.80 in cash (C2 10-pack, 100 g oil, 1 kg wax), plus ₹354.00 for a scale if you don't own one.

What does skipping it risk? In a worked example, a C2 1,000-pack bought on burn 1 and 300 candles poured before the base fails put ₹63,546.08 at risk, about 110 times the test. The wicks are the small part; the candles are the loss.

So what's the rule? Buy test packs now; buy the bulk wicks, and pour production, only after all three candles pass the full life to about 1 cm left.
The short answer
Why: a heavy base changes the end of the burn, and the first burn ends near the top. A wick chosen on burn 1 is chosen on a third of the candle.
The test: three 200 g candles on C2 (16 g oil + 184 g wax each), burned in 4-hour sessions to about 1 cm left, weighed after every session.

Straight answer
My 200 g jar has a heavy glass base. Why should I complete a full-life burn test instead of selecting the wick from the first burn?
Because the first burn tests the top of the candle and a heavy glass base changes the bottom. A thick base raises the floor the wick tab stands on and, commonly, stores heat that builds over the later sessions, so a wick that gives a neat pool on burn 1 can show a taller flame, a deeper pool or heavy carbon in the final third. The way to know is cheap: three 200 g candles on the wick you chose (here Eco C2, from a 10-pack at ₹94.40), burned to about 1 cm left: ₹577.20 in materials and about 11–15 days in our worked example. The way not to know is expensive: buy the 1,000-pack on burn 1 and pour 300 candles before the base fails, and ₹63,546.08 is exposed, about 110 times the test. The 1,000-pack costs the same ₹9.44 a wick as the 10-pack, so waiting costs you days, never a better price. Buy production wicks after three of three pass.

What the first burn can't see in a heavy-based jar

Burn 1 grades the top third of your candle. Your customer burns all three.

A first burn of 3–4 hours in a 200 g candle consumes a small part of the wax (in our worked example, 22 g of 200 g). Everything it tells you, pool width, flame height, soot, comes from the top of the candle, with cold glass all round. A heavy glass base changes the other end. It lifts the wick tab off the table, so the wick finishes its life closer to a thick slab of glass; that glass and the glass above the pool commonly hold heat from session to session; and as the wax level falls, the pool can deepen and the flame grow. These are tendencies, not certainties, and they vary with wick, oil, load and session length. The usual first-burn yardsticks still apply at the top: a full pool to the glass within about 3–4 hours and a very rough hour per 2.5 cm of width (about 3.2 hours for an 8 cm jar) are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data. They grade burn 1. They do not grade the base.

Mistake: "It burned perfectly the first time, so I ordered a thousand." Why it fails: a first burn is the easiest burn a candle ever has: cold glass, full wax, a short wick. The heavy base only joins in at the end. Fix: the first burn chooses which candles to keep burning; the full life chooses which wick to buy.

The full-life bill: three candles, grams, days

The test is three 200 g candles on the wick you chose, all from one pot, in three jars from the batch you will sell in. Three, so one odd candle (an off-centre tab, a draught) is outvoted. Load is 8% of total candle weight, CSI's convention: 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax each.

Each candle is ₹89.60 of oil plus ₹93.36 of wax plus a ₹9.44 wick: ₹192.40 in materials, excluding the jar, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Three are ₹577.20. In cash from nothing it is ₹1,161.80 for wicks, oil and wax, or ₹1,515.80 with the scale. The 100 g bottle is the right size for a reason: a 50 g holds 50 g and the test needs 48 g, leaving 2 g; the 100 g costs exactly two 50 g and leaves 52 g, enough to pour all three again (3 candles) if one splits.

Days are the other half of the bill. On the worked-example numbers (a 3-day cure, as the oil's load line says "cure 48-72 hours", then one 4-hour session a day at 5.5 g an hour, stopping with about 30 g left), the three candles reach their verdict on day 11: 8 sessions, 30.9 hours of burning. Wait a week to cure, as many makers do before judging throw, and it is day 15. All three burn in parallel, so three candles take no longer than one. Is your jar a CSI listing?
No CSI jar page describes a heavy base, and CSI's "200" listings state their capacity in ml: the 7 cm matte, glossy and frosted jars say "fill weight of 200 ml", and the Salsa jars "200ml capacity". 200 ml of water is not 200 g of wax; candle makers commonly multiply by about 0.86–0.9. Weigh a test pour before you plan grams, and see the 7.5 cm, 200 g post for what fill weight does and doesn't change in a wick order.

The wrong bulk order, priced

The wick you over-ordered is cheap. The candles you poured around it are not.

Here is the order a first-burn decision tends to produce, as a worked example. You buy the C2 1,000-pack (₹9,440.00) after burn 1 and start production at 25 candles a day. The first production candles reach their final third about twelve days later, and the base fails: tall flames, heavy carbon, too much heat to sell. By then you have poured 300.

Look where the money is. The 1,000-pack is ₹9,440.00 of it; most of the rest is oil and wax already poured into candles that now need reworking or can't be sold as firsts. Per candle, a production candle is ₹189.79 in materials (₹86.99 oil, ₹93.36 wax, ₹9.44 wick) before its jar. Add jars at, say, the CSI 150 g jar's pack price and 300 more would be ₹28,320.00; your heavy-base jars may cost more.

And waiting? It costs days, not rupees: the 11–15 days of the test. The C2 price does not move with pack size (the 1,000-pack is ₹9.44 a wick, the same as the 10-pack), and CSI 464 is flat per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg, so nothing gets cheaper by buying early. If a deadline is the worry, the deadline is a reason to start the test today, not to skip it.

Don't buy the 1,000-pack on burn 1: it is ₹9,440.00 for wicks at exactly the per-wick price of the ₹94.40 10-pack, and the only thing it buys early is exposure. Argued against our own interest: buy the 10-pack, run three candles to the bottom, and buy the month's wicks afterwards; the price will be the same.

The purchase gate: what may be bought before the verdict

Wax and oil follow the fragrance. Wicks and production follow the verdict.

Not everything has to wait. The full-life test decides the wick for this jar, oil and load; it does not decide whether you will make the candle at all. So the gate falls on two things only: bulk wicks and poured production. The acceptance gates themselves (what to record at the first full pool, halfway, the final third and the stop at about 1 cm) are the acceptance-depth post; this page owns which purchases each gate releases.

If the base fails, the next test is one rung down, and it starts from zero days. That is the case for carrying a small reserve of the smaller rung from the start, laid out in the narrowing-jar reserve post. If your heavy base also comes with thick walls and an early edge ring, read the ring with the thick-glass control arm before you buy anything bigger.

Mistake: pouring the first production batch "in parallel" with the test to save time. Why it fails: every production candle shares the test's outcome, and the outcome arrives last. Fix: pour test candles, not stock, until three of three pass; if time is short, start the test sooner, never production.

Turning sessions into a date: weigh, don't guess

A scale turns "full life" from a feeling into a day of the month.

The worked-example calendar uses 5.5 g an hour; yours will differ with wick, oil, load and jar. Weighing gives you the real figure after one session, and with it the verdict date and the date your production wicks need to arrive. Placing those orders against your own lead time is the final-third order-timeline post.

When all three candles pass the final third, size the wick order from your production: wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + allowance). At 300 candles a month (the pace of the worked example) and a 5% allowance, that is 315 wicks.

Two small honesty points sit in that table. Bergamot Amber's 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g bottles, so buy 500 g bottles if the counts work. And the wick line is the smallest line on the page, again. Reorder points follow the hub's method: at 10.5 wicks a day, a 10-day lead time (your figure) and a week of safety stock, reorder at about 178 wicks (the hub's production section; several SKUs at once is the per-SKU reorder post). The cheapest way to stop guessing how long "full life" takes. Weigh each candle before and after every session: the first session gives grams per hour, every later one tells you how much is left and when the final third starts. It also weighs fills and oil exactly, which keeps three candles identical. A full-life test is only as fair as its centring: an off-centre wick reaches the glass early on one side, and in the final third that is the side that overheats. The page describes a wooden holder, "Length 4.4" (11,4 cm)", with a "Hole Dia 0,15" (4mm)", for openings "less than 4"". One pack holds all three test wicks while they set.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose a candle wick from the first burn?
You can rule wicks out on the first burn, but not choose one. The first burn only tests the top of the candle; heat and pool depth change in the final third, especially over a heavy glass base. Approve a wick after three candles burn to about 1 cm left.
How long does a full burn test take for a 200 g candle?
It depends on your burn rate. In our worked example, 22 g in the first 4-hour session, a 3-day cure and one session a day put the verdict on day 11, or day 15 with a week's cure. Weigh your own candles after the first session to date yours.
Does a heavy glass base change how a candle burns?
Commonly, near the end. A thick base raises the wick tab and the glass stores heat over successive burns, so the pool can deepen and the flame grow in the last centimetres. It is a tendency, not a rule, which is why the full life is tested.
Is it cheaper to buy 1,000 candle wicks at once?
Not for CSI's Eco C2: the 1,000-pack is ₹9,440.00, the same ₹9.44 per wick as the 10-pack at ₹94.40. Eco C1 and Cotton Braided are flat per wick too. A big pack only moves cash forward, so buy it after the full-life test.
How many test candles do I need before buying wicks in bulk?
At least three candles of the same jar, wax, oil, load and wick, all burned to about 1 cm left with no failure in the final third. One candle can fail or pass for reasons that have nothing to do with the wick.
How much fragrance oil do I need for a full burn test of three 200 g candles?
At 8% of total weight, 16 g per candle, 48 g for three. A 100 g bottle of Bergamot Amber (₹560.00) covers it and leaves 52 g for a re-pour; a 50 g bottle would leave only 2 g.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). The burn rate, stop weight, cure lengths, session pattern, 25-a-day pace, twelve days to failure, 300-candle month, 5% allowance and 10-day lead time are worked-example assumptions. CSI 464 "up to 10%" and Bergamot Amber "6-10% for soy wax candles" are the pages' stated figures, formulation limits not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about 3–4 hours; about an hour per 2.5 cm) and the 0.86–0.9 water-to-wax factor are commonly cited rules of thumb; heavy-base effects are common tendencies.
