Once the pool reaches the glass, a bigger flame can't make it wider, but it can add burnt and smoky notes that bury an oud. Check the character blind, hot wick against one rung down, before you judge the strength.

blind, at 1 and 3 hours, hot wick v one rung down, plus an unscented reference · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My 8 cm oud candle has a large flame but doesn't fill the room. Why doesn't a hotter burn mean better hot throw? Because a bigger flame doesn't make a bigger pool once the pool reaches the glass, and past a point it adds combustion smells (burnt, smoky, sharp) that can bury oud's finer notes rather than carry them. Hotter can smell different, not stronger.

How do I check? A blind character check. Burn your current (hot) wick and one rung down side by side, plus one unscented candle on the hot wick. At 1 hour and 3 hours, three people who don't know the codes tick words on a sheet: the page's notes (saffron, rose, sandalwood) and off-notes (burnt, smoky, sharp, flat).

What does it show? If the hot wick loses the named notes by 3 hours and gains off-notes the unscented candle also has, heat is distorting the oud. Move down a rung. If both wicks read the same, heat isn't your problem; look at the room, cure, load and the oil itself.

What does it cost? Five 200 g candles: 64 g of White Royal Oud, 936 g of wax, ₹1,048.21 in materials in your own jars, or just ₹94.40 for a C2 pack if you own the rest.
The short answer
The verdict: a hotter burn raises how much wax and oil you use, not necessarily how much of the oud's character reaches the room. The pool surface is capped by the glass; the flame's by-products are not.
The check: hot wick v one rung down, 2 candles each, plus 1 unscented on the hot wick; blind descriptor sheet at 1 h and 3 h, three sniffers, same room.
The rule (judgement): hot wick at 3 h has fewer note ticks and at least two more off-note ticks than one down, matched by the unscented candle = heat distortion: step down. No difference = look past the wick.
The honest limit: CSI has no measured throw data for any oil, and nothing CSI sells turns a weak room into a strong one by itself. This check separates character from heat; measuring throw per gram is another post.
The character check: what three noses tick, hot wick v one down 8 cm jar, 200 g, White Royal Oud at 8%, candles coded, sniffed at the door of the same room. Dot size = how many of 3 sniffers ticked the word. Worked example, not CSI data. Top four rows are the page's notes; bottom four are off-notes. Hot wick 1 h Hot wick 3 h One down 1 h One down 3 h Unscented (hot) 3 h Bright top: bergamot, saffron Rose petals Oud, woody Creamy sandalwood, musk Burnt Smoky, acrid Sharp, fuel-like Flat, dull Door intensity, mean 0–3 2.0 1.7 1.7 2.0 — 1 of 3 2 of 3 3 of 3 Shaded column: the hot wick at 3 h. The notes fade, off-notes rise, and the unscented candle shows the same burnt tick: combustion, not oil.
A worked-example descriptor sheet, drawn as dots: the bigger the dot, the more of the three blind sniffers ticked that word. On the hot wick the page's notes are there at 1 hour and mostly gone by 3 hours, replaced by burnt, smoky, sharp and flat, and the unscented candle on the same wick shows burnt too. One rung down keeps the notes at 3 hours. Door intensity barely differs. Illustrative, not CSI data.
Straight answer
My 8 cm oud candle produces a large flame but still doesn't create strong room-filling fragrance. Why doesn't a hotter burn automatically mean better hot throw?
Because hot throw comes from fragrance evaporating off the melt pool, and once the pool has reached the glass a bigger flame cannot make that surface any wider. It can only make the pool deeper and hotter, burn more wax per hour, and produce more of what a flame makes on its own: soot, smoke and burnt, sharp smells. Oud oils are built from woody, resinous, smoky-leaning materials, so combustion notes blend into them easily and can bury the brighter and creamier parts (in White Royal Oud: bergamot, saffron, rose, creamy sandalwood). The room then smells of "something hot and woody", which many people read as weak or muddy oud. Test it instead of guessing. Burn two candles on your current wick and two on one rung down, plus an unscented candle on your current wick. At 1 and 3 hours, three people who don't know which is which tick descriptor words on a sheet. If the hot wick loses the named notes and gains burnt or smoky ticks that the unscented candle shares, the heat is distorting the oud: move down a rung. If both wicks read alike, the wick isn't the problem.
One line: a bigger flame can't widen a full pool, but it can add its own smell; check the character blind before you judge the strength.
For the check you may need one wick pack: Eco C2 (₹94.40 for 10) if your hot wick is Cotton Braided, or Eco C1 (₹118.00 for 20; the 10-pack is out of stock) if it is C2. Everything else is your own oil, wax and jars.
Eco C2 — ₹94.40

Four reasons a bigger flame doesn't fill the room

More heat is more burning. It is not the same thing as more scent.

1. The surface is fixed once the pool is full. Fragrance leaves the candle from the liquid pool. A bigger wick gets the pool to the glass sooner; after that, extra heat goes into depth. The evaporating surface stops growing at the jar's inside diameter (the numbers are in the next section).

2. A flame has its own smell. Soot and smoke from an oversized or untrimmed wick are commonly described as burnt or fuel-like, and they are made at the flame, not by the oil. On a light floral they stand out as a fault. On an oud, whose own notes lean woody and resinous, they blend in and read as "more oud, but flatter". That is why the check uses an unscented candle on the same wick: it tells you what the flame alone smells like.

3. Heat can change the balance of the oil. Lighter top notes commonly leave a hot pool faster, and long, hot sessions can flatten a layered fragrance towards its heaviest part. That is a tendency, not something CSI has measured. Oud's balance shifting towards plain wood as it burns is a known complaint, and how CSI's oud listings compare on that is the oud-flattening post; this page is about whether your wick's heat is doing it.

4. Noses and rooms. Perceived strength drops with continuous exposure, and a large room, an open door or a ceiling fan dilutes whatever the candle gives. A candle judged by the person who has sat beside it for three hours will usually seem weaker than it is. Fresh, blind noses fix that.

Mistake: going up a wick size, or up to 10%, because the room is weak. What happens: the flame grows further, the burnt and smoky share grows with it, and the candle can smell worse, not stronger. At 10% White Royal Oud also costs ₹32.40 more oil per 200 g candle. Fix: find out whether heat is part of the problem first. If it is, the fix points the other way.

The pool is capped by the glass

Every candle has a maximum surface. A bigger wick reaches it faster; it doesn't raise it.

Evaporation needs surface. In a jar measured at 8 cm outside, on a 0.35 cm wall (our labelled assumption), the inside is 7.3 cm and the full pool is 41.85 cm² (π r² on the inside radius). If 8 cm is your inside figure, it is 50.27 cm². Measure yours (why the outside figure misleads).

What more heat can and cannot change · 8 cm jar
Geometry declared · behaviour described as common tendencies, not CSI measurements
Quantity Smaller flame Bigger flame
Pool surface once full 41.85 cm² (7.3 cm inside) the same 41.85 cm²
Time to reach it longer; rule of thumb about 2.9–3.2 h shorter
Pool depth and temperature shallower, cooler deeper, hotter
Wax and oil used per hour less more
Soot, smoke, burnt smells less likely more likely
Top notes lasting through a session commonly longer commonly shorter

There is one place where a bigger flame genuinely helps: before the pool is full. A 5 cm pool part-way through a first burn is 19.63 cm², only 47% of the full surface. If your candle takes most of a session to reach the glass, room fill will suffer at the start. But a large flame on an 8 cm jar usually gets to the glass early; after that, the extra heat is only depth and smoke.

Smelling stronger because it burns more?
A bigger flame can smell stronger simply because it is using up more wax, and more oil with it, per hour: more scent at the price of a shorter candle. Whether a configuration gives more throw per gram burned is a separate measurement, weighed session by session, in the throw-per-gram post. This page asks a different question: is what reaches the room still your oud?

The character check: hot wick v one rung down

Two wicks, one oil, one control with no oil. Three noses that don't know which is which.

Hold everything but the wick: the same wax bag, White Royal Oud at 8% of total weight (16 g of oil + 184 g of wax in a 200 g fill, our worked example for 8 cm), jar batch, pour temperature, cure and room. The "hot" arm is the wick you use now; the other is one rung down. In CSI terms: Cotton Braided → C2, or C2 → C1. Add one unscented candle on the hot wick.

Costs are worked examples and exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. From nothing, the cash outlay is ₹1,531.80; if you already own the oil, wax, jars and your current wick, it is ₹94.40 for a C2 pack. Two White Royal Oud 50 g bottles (₹840.00) cost more than the 100 g and hold the same oil.

1
Pour and codePour all five the same day; CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C". Write codes on the bases (not H or D: use numbers) and keep the key on paper, away from the sniffers.
2
Cure identicallyNeither oud page states a cure time in the text we captured; the CSI oil pages that do say 48–72 hours for soy, and many makers wait about a week before judging scent.
3
One candle, one room, one sessionBurn each candle alone in the same closed room (a worked example: a 12 m² bedroom with a 3 m ceiling, 36 m³), fan and AC off, wick trimmed to about 5–6 mm. Air the room fully between candles. Burn within sight.
4
Sniff at 1 hour and 3 hours, from the doorEach sniffer waits outside, walks in, stays about half a minute, and fills the sheet without talking. Room fill is the complaint, so judge from the doorway and the middle of the room, never leaning over the flame.
5
Log the flame tooTrimmed flame height at 1 and 3 hours (a ruler behind the candle, not touching the jar), soot on the glass, any carbon cap. Glass is judged by what you see, never by touch.
6
Repeat on the second candle of each pairTwo sessions per coded candle, on different days, gives you a second reading before you act on a single evening's noses.

The descriptor sheet

Words, not stars. "Weak" tells you nothing; "burnt, no rose" tells you what to change.

The top half of the sheet takes its words from the oil's own page, so you are checking whether the notes the page promises actually reach the room. The bottom half lists the off-notes a flame commonly adds. Each sniffer ticks every word they notice and gives one intensity score for the room.

Blind descriptor sheet · one per sniffer, per candle, per check time
Tick every word you notice · intensity from the doorway 0 (nothing) to 3 (strong) · note words from the White Royal Oud page

Off-notes Burnt ☐ commonly linked to the flame
Off-notes Smoky, acrid ☐ soot and smoke
Off-notes Sharp, fuel-like ☐ commonly an oversized or untrimmed wick
Off-notes Flat, dull ☐ notes merged into one heavy smell
Intensity from the doorway (0–3) __ one number

With three sniffers and eight words, a column can hold at most 24 ticks. Add them up by group for each candle and time: note ticks and off-note ticks. The diagram above draws a worked example: on the hot wick at 3 hours the bright top, rose and creamy base have faded and the off-notes rise; the unscented candle on the same wick shows the burnt tick too; one rung down still carries the notes at 3 hours.

Why "smoky" is on the sheet for an oud
Some ouds are meant to smell smoky, and several CSI oud and bakhoor listings say so in their notes. That is exactly why the unscented reference matters: if the unscented candle on the hot wick is ticked "smoky" or "burnt" as often as the oud is, at least part of that smoke is the flame, not the fragrance.

Reading the sheet

Compare the 3-hour columns. The 1-hour columns usually agree, which is the point.
Decision · after two sessions per candle · our judgement, labelled
Totals across three sniffers · "distortion" = hot wick at 3 h has fewer note ticks and at least two more off-note ticks than one down
What the sheets show Reading Next
Distortion at 3 h on the hot wick; unscented candle also ticked burnt or smoky Heat is distorting the oud. The flame adds its own smell Move down a rung; carry that wick through full life before approving
Distortion at 3 h; unscented candle clean Heat is changing the oil's balance Move down a rung, or shorten the printed session; re-sheet at the new setting
Both wicks read alike; intensity low on both Not a heat problem Check the room, cure and load, and the oil's structure (oud flattening); keep your wick if its burn is otherwise clean
One down loses room fill at 1 h (pool slow to reach the glass) The smaller wick is under-powered at the start Stay on your wick but trim more strictly, or test a shorter printed session
Hot wick smokes visibly or soots the glass A burn failure before it is a scent question Move down a rung regardless of the sheet

Intensity scores rarely settle this on their own. In our worked example the hot wick scores 2.0 at 1 hour and 1.7 at 3 hours, and one rung down scores 1.7 and 2.0: close enough to be noise with three people. The words are what separate them. A candle that smells "burnt, smoky, flat" at 3 hours will lose a customer faster than one that smells slightly softer but still of rose and sandalwood.

Argued against our own interest: the likely fix for a hot oud candle is a cheaper wick, not a dearer oil. If the sheet shows distortion, moving from Cotton Braided to C2 saves ₹2.56 a candle, and moving from C2 to C1 saves ₹3.54. And if the sheet shows no distortion and a weak room on both wicks, the answer may be a different oil, which we would rather you choose with a 15 g sample than a 500 g bottle.

If the thing that bothers you is that the oversized wick seems to smell better, a separate checklist tests whether a strong result is hiding a poor burn: the masking post. And if you want the room-fill number itself, measured as throw per gram burned, see throw per gram.

Two ouds, two structures

An oud with a bright top has more to lose to heat than one built on vanilla and amber.

White Royal Oud is layered: "bergamot and saffron top notes, white royal oud, rose petals, and labdanum middle notes, and creamy sandalwood, ambergris, and soft musk base". Its character depends on the bright top and the rose surviving the burn, which is why it is our worked example: heat has the most to erase. Dark Vanilla Oud is built differently: "opening with vanilla and spicy cardamom, deepening into exotic oud and deep amber, and settling into warm musk and woody cedar". There is less top to lose, but vanilla-rich oils are commonly linked to more carbon on the wick, so on a hot wick it may drift towards "burnt sugar" and smoke instead. Use its own notes as the sheet's top-half words.

Two neighbouring questions have their own posts. If your oud problem is a mushrooming wick that appeared when you moved from lavender to oud at 10%, untangle oil from load first with the 7.5 cm oud confound test. If you are thinking of running a costly oud at a lower load to save money, the premium-oil-at-6% post sets out where to start the wick. And if the smaller wick seems to reach the glass too slowly, the timing checks in the 45-minute pool post and the four-hours-to-the-edge post help you read the pool before you judge the scent.

The two oud oils in this check

Dark Vanilla Oud 6–10% vanilla-spice opening, oud-amber heart, musk-cedar base ₹5.90 / ₹5.69 ₹94.40 / ₹91.06

Both pages describe a "Strong throw"; that is page wording, not CSI measurement. White Royal Oud is flat at ₹8.10 a gram from 100 g to 1 kg, so buying more doesn't lower its per-gram price; Dark Vanilla Oud drops from ₹5.90 to ₹5.69. Neither oil reproduces any particular perfume, and we don't claim they do. To run the second oil too, add a pair of Dark Vanilla Oud candles on each wick (64 g, ₹377.60 from a 100 g bottle).

What the character check needs

Five items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance or throw data, so nothing is ranked on burn or scent results. Oil candles are counted at 16 g (200 g fill) and 12 g (150 g).

The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" and gives a layered structure: "bergamot and saffron top notes, white royal oud, rose petals, and labdanum middle notes, and creamy sandalwood, ambergris, and soft musk base". That structure is why it suits a character check: bright top, floral heart and creamy base each have a word on the sheet, so you can see which ones heat erases. "Strong throw" is the page's wording, not CSI test data; no cure time in the text we captured. Every size is in stock on 29 September 2026, flat at ₹8.10 a gram from 100 g. Limitation: it is a dear oil (₹129.60 a 200 g candle at 8%), so settle the wick before you buy more than the 100 g.

Every size is in stock on 29 September 2026; ₹94.40 of oil a 200 g candle at 8% from the 100 g, ₹35.20 less than White Royal Oud. Five candles: 936 g = ₹474.93. Buy 1 kg — ₹507.40
What not to buy: a bigger wick or more oil to chase room fill before the sheet is done. A 500 g of either oud before the wick is settled; White Royal Oud's 500 g is the same ₹8.10 a gram as its 100 g. A second, "stronger" oud as the fix: if the sheet shows distortion, a new oil on the same hot wick will distort too. An additive bought to "boost throw": it would change the wax in the middle of the test.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 40 days from 29 September 2026. Oud candles are a festive gifting favourite, and a candle that smells burnt at hour three is a poor gift. The CSI principle
Judge the character before the strength.
A bigger flame can't widen a full pool, but it can add its own smell. Three blind noses, an unscented reference and a one-rung-down wick show whether the heat is carrying your oud or covering it.
"If the room smells of the flame, it doesn't matter how expensive the oud was."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oud oils, wicks and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still says the likely fix is a cheaper wick rather than a dearer oil, that this check may need nothing new from us, and that CSI has no measured throw data for any oil.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: every size shown is in stock except the Eco C1 10-pack, flagged where it appears. Load and note wording is quoted from the product pages; "Strong throw" is the pages' own claim; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The descriptor words (top half from the White Royal Oud page), the decision rule, the 200 g fill, the 0.35 cm wall, the room and the diagram's ticks are our judgement or worked examples; the effects of heat on notes and the smell of combustion are commonly reported tendencies, not CSI data. Only until the melt pool reaches the glass. After that a bigger flame makes the pool deeper and hotter and burns more wax, but the scent-releasing surface stays the same, and the flame can add burnt or smoky notes of its own.
Why does my oud candle smell burnt?
Commonly because the wick is too large or untrimmed and the flame is making soot and smoke; oud's woody, resinous notes blend with those smells. Burn an unscented candle on the same wick: if it smells burnt too, it's the flame, not the oil.
Why doesn't my candle fill the room even with a large flame?
Room fill depends on the pool surface, the oil, the load and cure, the room size and airflow, and your nose's adaptation. A large flame only changes how hot and deep the pool is, and past a point it can change the scent's character for the worse.
How do I test candle scent blind?
Code the bases, burn one candle at a time in the same closed room, and have people who didn't pour them walk in at set times and tick descriptor words and an intensity score. Air the room between candles.
What fragrance load should I use for oud candles?
Stay inside both ceilings: White Royal Oud's and Dark Vanilla Oud's pages state 6–10% for candles, and CSI 464's up to 10%. Raising the load won't fix a flame that is distorting the scent.
Will a smaller wick make my candle smell weaker?
Not necessarily. If the smaller wick still reaches the glass in a reasonable time, the scent surface is the same, and the scent may be cleaner. Only a blind comparison at 1 and 3 hours tells you.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 7.5–8 cm jars with a single wick (4221–4240). It owns a blind character check for an 8 cm oud candle with a large flame and weak room fill: a descriptor sheet (the oil page's notes and common off-notes) comparing the current hot wick and one rung down at 1 and 3 hours, with an unscented reference on the hot wick.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 200 g fill, 0.35 cm wall and 12 m² room are labelled worked-example inputs; pool area = π r² on the inside radius. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; both oud oils 6–10%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Full-pool time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) is a rule of thumb. The descriptor ticks, intensity scores and decision rule are editorial judgement and illustrative. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
