My Candle Produces Black Soot Around the Rim of the Jar — How Do I Determine Whether the Wick, Fragrance Load or Burn Duration Is Responsible?
Aktie
What do I buy for that? One Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock) for the down-rung arm and one Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40) for the other three columns, if you do not already stock them. In the worked example (your 8 cm jar, 200 g of Woody Oud at 8% in CSI 464), the twelve candles use 180 g of oil and 2,220 g of wax: ₹2,044.70 of materials, excluding your jars.
Why not just buy a smaller wick? Because only one of seven possible results calls for one. If the shorter-session arm comes out clean, the fix is a label; if the lower-load arm does, the fix is the formula, which also saves ₹16.10 a candle. A wick bought for a label problem becomes dead stock.
What if every arm still soots? Then none of these three is the cause. Buy nothing more and look at airflow, wick centring and the oil itself.

Why soot on the rim cannot name its own cause
Soot is unburnt carbon escaping a flame that is getting more fuel than it can burn cleanly, or being disturbed while it burns. On a container candle it commonly lands on the glass above the wax, where the rim stays coolest. Three common routes lead there, and each points to a different purchase:
| Cause | How it tends to make soot | Arm that tests it | Purchase if guilty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wick too large | A bigger flame and more fuel than it burns cleanly; carbon builds on the tip | A: one rung down, same load, same sessions | Production C1 (or the next rung down from yours) |
| Load heavy for this oil | Heavier, resinous oils are commonly linked to more carbon at the wick; more oil can mean a sootier flame | B: lower load, same wick, same sessions | No wick; less oil per candle |
| Sessions too long | Carbon accumulates through a long burn; the wick lengthens and the flame grows late in the session | C: same build, shorter sessions | No wick; a label and a printed session length |
The ring's position can hint at the route: a band at a particular depth, soot on the lid, a one-sided smear. Reading those patterns is the late soot-band post, and it is worth doing before you pour anything. But a hint is not attribution. Two causes often act together (a slightly big wick in a long session), and the only way to separate them is to change one at a time in candles poured from the same pot.
This is a narrower kit than the general attribution kit, which separates fragrance chemistry, jar and wick-pack variation. Here the oil, jar and wick pack are held still, and the three levers you control on the bench are tested against each other.
The attribution order, column by column
The worked example: your own jar, 8 cm across the inside (50.27 cm² of pool; CSI lists no jar at 8 cm), a 200 g fill, Woody Oud at 8% of total weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax) in CSI 464, Eco C2. The soot shows after 5-hour sessions, which is how some customers burn on a long evening. The fill and the session lengths are worked examples; weigh your own fill line and use the session length at which your soot appears.
| Column | Wick | Load | Sessions | Oil + wax per candle | Per candle | Three candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control | C2 | 8% | 5 h | 16 g + 184 g | ₹175.30 | ₹525.90 |
| A · down-rung | C1 | 8% | 5 h | 16 g + 184 g | ₹171.76 | ₹515.28 |
| B · load-down | C2 | 6% | 5 h | 12 g + 188 g | ₹159.21 | ₹477.62 |
| C · session-length | C2 | 8% | 3.5 h | 16 g + 184 g | ₹175.30 | ₹525.90 |
| All twelve | 3 C1 + 9 C2 | — | — | 180 g + 2,220 g | — | ₹2,044.70 |
Why 3.5 hours for arm C: a very rough rule of thumb (about an hour per 2.5 cm of width) puts a full pool in an 8 cm jar at about 3.2 hours, so the shorter session still reaches the glass and does not trade soot for tunnelling. Why 6% for arm B: it is the bottom of Woody Oud's stated "candles (6-10%)" and a clear step from 8%; going below the page's range would test a formula you would not sell.
The buy list
| Item | Count needed | Smallest in-stock pack | Price | Per unit | Left over |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco C1 (arm A) | 3 | 20 (10-pack out of stock) | ₹118.00 | ₹5.90 | 17 |
| Eco C2 (control, B, C) | 9 | 10 | ₹94.40 | ₹9.44 | 1 |
| Woody Oud | 180 g | 2 × 100 g | ₹906.24 | ₹4.53 per g | 20 g |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 2,220 g | 2 × 1 kg + 500 g | ₹1,274.80 | ₹0.51 per g | 280 g |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray | for wiping rims | 150 ml | ₹383.00 | — | most of it |
| Your 8 cm jars | 12 | your supplier | yours | — | — |
From nothing, that is ₹2,776.44 in cash before jars. If Woody Oud is already in your range, the oil, wax and C2 come from production stock and the new cash is ₹501.00: the C1 pack and the spray. Argued against our own interest: do not buy the 500 g Woody Oud for this; at ₹4.53 a gram it is no cheaper per gram than two 100 g bottles, and the test needs 180 g.
Running the twelve candles
The minute at which soot first appears inside a session is a second, finer measurement (the soot-onset clock in the coffee soot-with-throw post). It is not needed to attribute the cause, but it is the number you will want if arm C wins and you have to decide what session length to print.
Reading the arms: which result buys what
A column is clean when all three candles stay at 0–1 on the rim scale through the full life; it is sooty when two or three reach 2 or more. One odd candle out of three means re-pour three more of that column before you decide.
| Clean columns | Reading | Purchase | Money a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control clean as well | Not reproduced on the bench | Nothing | — |
| A only | The wick is too large for this oil and session | C1 for production after full life: two 50-packs + a 20-pack (₹708.00) a month | ₹354.00 saved on wicks |
| B only | The load is heavy for this oil on this wick | No wick. Reformulate to 6% and check throw blind | ₹1,609.52 saved on materials |
| C only | Burn duration: clean inside 3.5 h, sooty at 5 h | No wick. Print the session length; care stickers | ₹82.60 on stickers |
| A and B | Either lever works | Choose by a blind throw check, then cost; change one, not both | ₹354.00 or ₹1,609.52 |
| All three | Marginal: the build is close to the line | Label first (cheapest, no reformulation), then the lever with the better throw | from ₹82.60 |
| None | None of these three is the cause | Nothing more; check airflow, centring, the oil (ask us) | — |
Note the money in row B: dropping Woody Oud from 8% to 6% saves ₹16.10 a candle in materials (4 g less oil at ₹4.53 a gram, 4 g more wax), several times the ₹3.54 the wick change saves. That is not a reason to choose it: the reason must be the clean column and a throw you are still happy with. But it is a reason not to assume the wick is the "cheap fix". For the load arm, the throw check matters more than for the wick arm; how load trades against performance is a formulation question, and why a bigger wick is the wrong response to weak throw is the good pool, weak throw post.
Row C is the one that most often gets misread as a wick problem. A candle that is clean for 3.5 hours and sooty at 5 is usually a candle whose session length needs to be on the label, not a candle with the wrong wick. What session length to print and the care-label wording are the soot-after-long-burns label post; on this page, the purchase is the sticker roll, not a wick.
From the clean arm to production
Once one column is clean through the full life, size the order from your own production: units to buy = candles × units per candle × (1 + allowance), with a labelled 5% allowance in our worked example. In the wick branch, 100 Woody Oud candles a month needs 105 C1 a month: two 50-packs and a 20-pack (₹708.00) cover 120. Because C1 and C2 are flat per wick, choose packs that add up to the need: a C1 1,000-pack is ₹5.90 a wick, exactly what the 20-pack costs.
| Branch | New standing item | Stops | Records to update |
|---|---|---|---|
| A · wick | Eco C1, 105 a month | C2 for Woody Oud (C2 stays for products approved on it) | Approved wick for this jar + oil + load |
| B · load | Woody Oud at 6%: 12 g a candle | Nothing; C2 stays | Formula sheet; oil reorder quantity falls |
| C · session | Care stickers, one a candle | Nothing; build unchanged | Label wording and printed session length |
If the wick branch wins, the C2 left on your shelf belongs to products where C2 is approved, not to Woody Oud; how to run that transition against stock and lead time is the wicking-down transition post. If C1 is already your house wick and arm A still soots, CSI lists no smaller sized, tabbed wick: the options below C1 are in the smaller-wick post.

Skip for this test: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made: a step up, the wrong direction for soot. Performance Wooden Wicks: a new system with its own soot behaviour; its page claims wooden wicks "tend to burn more cleanly than cotton wicks, with less smoke and soot", which is the page's claim to test, not a fix to assume. A second oud: changing the oil is a fourth variable, and it belongs to a different test.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil, wax, spray and stickers named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that most soot results do not call for a wick purchase, that the 500 g oil is no cheaper per gram than two 100 g bottles, and that a lower load may save you more than a smaller wick.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026.
