My Candle Sweats with One Fragrance but Not Another at Exactly the Same Percentage — Why Can Wax Hold Different Fragrance Oils Differently?
Aktie
How do I find out which oils my wax holds well? Build a range compatibility map: every scent in your range, poured at the house load in the same wax, jar and wick on the same day, two candles each, checked at day 1, 3, 7 and 14, grouped by family and set beside each oil page's stated range.
What does it cost? Worked example with eight oils: 192 g of oil, 2,208 g of CSI 464, sixteen jars and wicks, ₹3,674.61 of materials; ₹2,725.14 if you already own the oils.
What do I do with an oil that sweats? Give that oil its own lower load, tested, rather than dropping the whole range's load or changing wax. The per-oil maximum card is the next step.

Why "8%" isn't the same for every oil
A fragrance oil is not one substance. It is a blend of many aromatic materials, sometimes with a carrier, chosen to smell of the sea, of cinnamon or of roses. Soy wax is itself a blend of fats. How well the two stay together depends on which materials are in the oil and in what proportions, and that differs from bottle to bottle. Candle makers commonly find that some oils sit happily at the top of their stated range while others sweat below it in the same wax (a tendency). Nothing about the percentage predicts which.
Four reasons, all hedged, because CSI doesn't publish its oils' formulas:
| Reason | What it means | What you can check |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Each oil's mixture of materials is taken in by soy more or less readily; some reach the wax's limit sooner | Nothing directly: formulas aren't published. The map shows the result. |
| Density | Oils differ in density, so the same weight is a slightly different volume of oil in the wax | Weigh, never measure oil by ml or cap; the load stays honest even if volume differs |
| Heavy or crystalline materials | Some aromatic materials, vanillin among them, can behave differently in wax as it sets (a tendency); pages state vanillin for some oils | The page's vanillin line, where there is one (Blue Ocean and Cinnamon both state 0%) |
| The page's range is from someone else's test | "Up to 10%" is a recommendation from the oil page, tested in conditions you don't know | The two-ceilings rule: the lower of oil page and wax page governs; the map tells you your real limit |
A fifth reason is not the oil at all: process. If the sweating oil was added cooler, stirred for less time or poured from the bottom of a cooling pot, the difference you saw may be the day, not the bottle. That is why the map pours every oil in one session under one set of temperatures; process faults across a whole batch are the jar-base post and the pour-sequence post.
What the oil pages do and don't tell you
At least 48 of CSI's 102 oil pages state a candle load or range in a structured line, and a few more mention one only in an FAQ. Most of those that give a maximum say 10%. Three state a maximum above 10% (Japanese Cherry Blossom 6–13%, Cinnamon Vanilla up to 13%, Autumn 7–11%) and three a maximum below it, among them Fresh Strawberries at 6–9%. None of them says which oils sweat soonest in which wax, because none of them can.
Two page habits matter for a map. Basis: most pages don't state one; Peach Melon Berry's says "8-10% fragrance oil per weight of wax", which on CSI's total-weight basis is 7.41% to 9.09%. Drawn on the map that way, it has less headroom above 8% than an "up to 10%" oil. Two ceilings: the lower of the oil page's maximum and the wax page's governs. On CSI 464 ("Fragrance Load Up to 10%"), Autumn's 11% is capped at 10%, and Fresh Strawberries' 9% governs over the wax's 10%. Read on wax weight, CSI 464's 10% would be 9.09% of total, so a house load of 8% of total sits inside both readings on every row of this map.
One oil sweats → likely reason → how to tell
Ranked most common first as editorial judgement; CSI publishes no sweat or failure data for its oils.
| # | What you see | Likely reason | Rules it in | Rules it out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oil A sweats, oil B dry, poured in one session | Oil A sits nearer its limit in this wax | The map repeats it, both candles of the pair | A's pair is dry when re-poured beside B |
| 2 | Oil A was poured on a different day, from a different pot | Process difference, not the oil | A's batch sheet shows a cooler add, shorter stir or late pour | A sweats again in the one-session map |
| 3 | Oil A weighed on a different basis, or by ml | A was really at a higher load | Batch sheet basis differs | Both weighed in grams on total weight |
| 4 | Two oils of one family sweat, other families dry | A family tendency in your wax (judgement) | The map groups them; both family members sweat | Only one of the family sweats |
| 5 | Oil A is a blend you made | The blend, not a single oil | The parts are dry alone | Covered by the blend-separation post |
| 6 | Every oil sweats, some sooner | The formula or process for the whole range | Every row of the map sweats | Most rows dry (see 3233) |
Rows 2 and 3 are why the map exists in this form: one pour session, one scale, one basis. Row 5 is a different question with a different test; row 6 means the oils are the wrong suspects.
Building the range compatibility map
The map is a controlled comparison of your whole range at the house load. The worked example uses eight oils in four families, two candles each: sixteen 150 g candles at 8% in CSI 464. Use your own range; the method is the same at five oils or fifteen.
| Family | Oil | Page's stated candle load | Governing max on CSI 464 (% of total) | d1 | d3 | d7 | d14 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh | Blue Ocean | "candles (up to 10%)" | 10% | ||||
| Fresh | Eucalyptus Spearmint | up to 10% for soy wax | 10% | ||||
| Floral | British Rose | "up to 10% soy" | 10% | ||||
| Floral | Neroli | "Up to 10% for soy wax" | 10% | ||||
| Fruity | Fresh Strawberries | "6-9% for candles" | 9% (oil page governs) | ||||
| Fruity | Peach Melon Berry | "8-10% fragrance oil per weight of wax" | 9.09% (10% of wax, converted) | ||||
| Spice · gourmand | Cinnamon | "Up to 10% for soy wax" | 10% | ||||
| Spice · gourmand | Chocolate Fudge | "6-10% for candles" | 10% |
| Item | Used | Cost of what is used |
|---|---|---|
| Eight oils, 24 g each at the 50 g price (Blue Ocean ₹118.56, Eucalyptus Spearmint, British Rose and Fresh Strawberries ₹101.95 each, Neroli ₹164.26, Peach Melon Berry ₹107.05, Cinnamon ₹158.59, Chocolate Fudge ₹95.16) | 192 g, 26 g left in each bottle | ₹949.47 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹0.51/g) | 2,208 g | ₹1,120.34 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), pack of 20 ₹1,888.00 | 16 jars (4 spare) | ₹1,510.40 |
| Eco Candle Wicks, Thin (C1), pack of 20 ₹118.00 | 16 wicks | ₹94.40 |
| The map | 16 candles | ₹3,674.61 |
Costs are worked examples and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. If the oils are your existing range, the map costs ₹2,725.14 in wax, jars and wicks. Bought new, the eight 50 g bottles come to ₹1,978.06, and each leaves 26 g: enough for a follow-up pair of any oil that sweats at one point lower (21 g for two candles at 7%). A single Blue Ocean map candle is ₹229.60 in materials; a Cinnamon one ₹249.62.
Reading the map, row by row and family by family
| Map pattern | What it points to | Next step | Purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| One row sweats, the rest dry | That oil's practical maximum in your wax is below the house load | A follow-up pair one point lower; then its own card (3231) | Nothing; the 50 g has 26 g left |
| Both oils of one family sweat | A family tendency in your wax (judgement) | Test each member one point lower; don't assume new oils of that family will behave alike | Nothing |
| A row sweats that sits near its governing maximum | Less headroom than an "up to 10%" row (e.g. 8% against a 9% maximum) | Treat its lower maximum as the planning limit for that oil | Nothing |
| Rows sweat at day 7 or 14 but not day 1 | Late sweat as the wax settles; still a sweat | Keep checking to day 14 on every new oil; storage effects are 3228 | Nothing |
| Every row sweats | Not the oils: the formula or process | The non-load checklist; the jar-base 2×2 for mixing | Nothing yet |
| No row sweats, but your original candle did | The original difference was the day: temperature, stir, basis or storage | Compare its batch sheet with the map session | Nothing |
Two rules keep it fair. The pair must agree: a row with one wet and one dry candle is repeated before it is judged. And the map is a room-temperature map: it says how your wax holds each oil on a steady shelf, not in summer or after a courier journey. Heat cycling is 3235; shipping is 3229. An oil that passes the map can still need its own summer check.
Don't punish the whole range for one oil
The usual outcome, in our judgement, is a range with one house load and a short list of exceptions, each with its own tested maximum written on a card. That keeps production simple where it can be and specific where it must be. Blends of two map rows are their own question, because two dry oils can still sweat together; see 3232. For the first-level version of "is this oil compatible with soy?", see the compatibility post.
Oils and wax for an example map
Five of the eight example oils, chosen to show the patterns a map can reveal (two "up to 10%" rows from different families, a second fresh row, a row with a lower stated maximum, and a row with a size out of stock), plus the wax held constant. Chosen on page statements, price per gram and stock on 26 September 2026; CSI has no measured sweat or throw data, so nothing is ranked on performance. Oil tables show every size, 150 g candles at 12 g, and 24 g map pairs.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy eight new bottles to map a range you already own, that Blue Ocean's 1 kg costs more per gram than its 50 g, that a sweating oil deserves a follow-up pair before it is dropped, and that a new wax is the wrong first move.
Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; Chocolate Fudge's 100 g is flagged as out of stock and every other size in the pick tables is in stock on that date. Load, vanillin, cure and basis wording is quoted from the product pages; the counts of pages stating a candle load come from the pages as captured.
The reasons oils differ are tendencies (CSI publishes no oil composition, densities or sweat data); the cause ranking and the family reading are editorial judgement; the map sheet's day columns are left for your results. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). Page ranges are quoted as worded; Peach Melon Berry's per-weight-of-wax range is converted (8% and 10% of wax = 7.41% and 9.09% of total). CSI 464's stated ceiling is up to 10% (basis not stated; 9.09% of total if read on wax weight). "At least 48 of 102 oil pages state a candle load or range" counts structured lines; three state a maximum above 10% and three below. Why oils differ, family patterns and late sweat are tendencies or editorial judgement. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
