My Reed Diffuser Has 25% Fragrance Oil but Barely Smells — Could the Base or Reeds Be Limiting Fragrance Release?
Aktie
What do I check first? Weigh the bottle a week apart and compare with a fresh one. Low weight loss = delivery problem (reeds, base, cold). Normal loss = room, airflow or nose.
Should I go to 30%? Not yet. If the reeds are clogged or the base is slow, extra oil stays in the bottle — and may clog reeds faster.
What does testing cost? ₹2,788.58 with your own current base and bottles (₹5,146.58 everything bought). See the priced round.
Yes — at 25%, look at the base and the reeds before the load
Twenty-five per cent is the load CSI's Pure Performance Base page calls its "typical working blend" (75% base + 25% fragrance), five points above the 20% it recommends and five below the 30% maximum every CSI base page allows. At that level the liquid in your bottle carries plenty of fragrance. If the room still barely notices it, the fragrance is not getting out — and the two things that move it out are the reeds, which lift the liquid and present it to the air, and the base, which carries the oil up the reeds and sets how readily the blend evaporates. Adding another 4.50 g of oil to reach 30% in a 90 g fill does nothing for either.
So the honest answer to your question is: yes, the base or the reeds could well be limiting it — and one free measurement tells you which side to look at. Weigh the bottle. A diffuser that is losing very little weight is not delivering; a diffuser that is losing weight steadily but still reads weak is delivering something the room is not noticing. The diagram above sorts the four situations; the load arithmetic behind 25% is in the fragrance-load pillar.
The free measurement: is liquid actually leaving?
Put the weak bottle — cap off, reeds in — on a scale and write down the weight. Do not move or flip anything. Weigh it again at the same time a week later, and again a week after that. The difference, divided by the days, is grams lost per day. Do the same for a freshly made bottle of the same formula with fresh reeds; that is your reference. CSI publishes no evaporation rate for any base, oil or reed, so the only comparison that means anything is your own fresh bottle beside your weak one.
| Reading | Example | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottle + cap + reeds, day 0 | 248.0 g | ||
| Same, day 14 | 241.0 g | 248.0 − 241.0 | 7.0 g lost |
| Grams lost per day | 7.0 ÷ 14 | 0.50 g/day | |
| Empty bottle + cap + dry reeds (weighed before filling, or estimated from a spare) | 160.0 g | 241.0 − 160.0 | 81.0 g liquid left |
| Projected days remaining | 81.0 ÷ 0.50 | 162 days |
Read the result against the fresh reference bottle, not against a number from the internet — there is no standard grams-per-day for a reed diffuser. If the weak bottle loses much less than the fresh one, the problem is on the delivery side: reeds, base, or temperature. If it loses about the same, the liquid is moving and the problem is how the fragrance reaches people — room size, airflow, where it stands, nose fatigue, or a carrier that leaves faster than the fragrance does. Liquid level barely changes after two weeks and liquid disappears quickly but the room smells weak take each branch further.
How reeds can limit a strong blend
CSI sells fibre reeds, 20.3 cm long, in black and white. Their page says that for a standard 50–100 ml bottle "6–8 reeds gives a good balance", with more reeds for stronger throw and faster diffusion and fewer for subtler, longer-lasting results. That is the page's guidance to test, not a measurement — but it describes the mechanism correctly: each reed is a separate path for the liquid to climb and a separate surface for fragrance to leave from. Too few reeds in a 120 ml bottle means less surface; old or clogged reeds mean less of each reed is working.
| Reed reason | What you see | Single test |
|---|---|---|
| Too few reeds for the bottle | Steady but low weight loss; faint at distance | 6 vs 10 reeds, same blend (arms A and B) |
| Reeds clogged by heavy components | Dark, sticky, crusted tips; weight loss falls over weeks | Fresh reeds in the same bottle |
| Never flipped, or flipped too often | Strong for an hour after flipping, then weak | One flip at the start, then leave — see 7973 |
| Reed type unsuited to the base | Reeds stay pale and dry at the tips | Compare black and white, or your own thin and thick reeds — see 7974 |
More reeds is not free strength. It is commonly described as increasing how fast the bottle empties, and a faster-emptying bottle is a shorter-lived product. That is why arm B below is measured on weight loss as well as room score: if ten reeds lift the score but also empty the bottle much faster, you have to decide whether the stronger, shorter product is the one you want to sell. How many reeds to test in a 100 ml bottle deals with that trade-off directly.
How the base can limit a strong blend
The base is the carrier the oil travels in. How easily the blend climbs the reeds and how readily it evaporates from them depends on the base as well as the oil — but CSI publishes no viscosity, evaporation rate or composition for any of its bases, so the base's effect can only be found by testing. What the pages do publish is what each base is for.
Our example is the case most likely to produce your symptom: Sandalwood — a heavy wood — at 25% in Longevity Base. The Longevity page describes its own diffusion as slower, "cold diffusion", for oriental, woody, resinous, spicy and gourmand families, and says to allow 2–3 hours before the first flip and to place it away from strong air currents. A slow, long-lasting base with a heavy oil is a coherent design — the page's own pitch is longevity — but in a large or ventilated room it may read as "barely smells". That is not a defect; it may simply be the wrong design for the room. Arm C puts the same blend in Pure Performance Base, whose page calls it neutral, for all families, with a flip after the first hour, so you can see what the base change alone does. We do not claim either will be stronger; we publish no throw data and never rank bases.

What a delivery fix costs — per bottle and per day
Neither fix changes the liquid cost much: the blend is the same in all three arms, and Pure Performance Base costs ₹1,099.00 for 500 ml against ₹1,296.00 for Longevity Base. At Sandalwood's 1 kg rate (₹5.03 per gram) and Longevity at an example 1.00 g/ml (₹2.59 per gram), the liquid in a 90 g fill costs ₹288.06. The reeds add ₹54.00 for six white reeds or ₹90.00 for ten at the 50-pack rate. What changes the economics is the life of the bottle.
| Reeds | Hypothetical g/day | Days of life | Liquid cost per day | Reeds per bottle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 1.0 | 90 | ₹3.20 | ₹54.00 |
| 10 | 1.6 | 56 | ₹5.12 | ₹90.00 |
If ten reeds made the room score jump and the bottle emptied 60% faster, as in this illustration, you would have a stronger product that lasts noticeably less time. Neither is wrong; they are different products. A bedroom diffuser sold on longevity and a living-room diffuser sold on presence can be the same blend with different reed counts and different labels. Strong for three days, then weak and 120 ml lasting only three weeks look at the life side of this trade-off.
The priced round
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood (example oil) | 208.58 g | 2 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹1,098.58 | You have enough of your own oil (better) |
| Pure Performance Base (arm C) | 208.58 g | 3 × 100 g | ₹975.00 | Your comparison base is another one |
| Fiber Diffuser Reeds (White) | 66 reeds | 1 × pack of 50 + 1 × pack of 25 | ₹715.00 | You hold fresh reeds from one lot |
| With your own current base and bottles | ₹2,788.58 | |||
| Longevity Base (arms A and B) | 417.15 g | 1 × 500 ml | ₹1,296.00 | You hold your current base (usual) |
| Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle 120 ml | 9 bottles | 1 × pack of 10 | ₹1,062.00 | You use your own bottles |
| Everything bought | ₹5,146.58 |
Three 100 g packs of Pure Performance (₹975.00) cover arm C more cheaply than a 500 ml (₹1,099.00) because the arm needs only 209 g. The 100 g size is unique to Pure Performance among CSI's bases. Sandalwood is ₹5.03 per gram at 100 g and ₹5.03 at 1 kg — the same rate — so buy production quantities after the round.
The decision rule
| If this is true | It means | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Weak bottle loses about as much as a fresh one | Liquid is moving — the room, airflow or nose | Buy nothing. Re-score in a closed room; see the room post |
| Fresh reeds in the old bottle fix it | Reed condition was the limit | Plan reed replacement; buy reeds only |
| Arm B beats A on score, weight loss rises moderately | Reed count was the limit | Sell with 10 reeds; reeds in packs of 50 or more |
| Arm C beats A at the same reed count | The base was the limit for this room | Move this oil to that base in 500 ml |
| B and C both beat A | Both help | Round 2: Pure Performance with 10 reeds |
| No arm beats A | Not reeds or base — the oil or the room size | Don't buy yet. See the capstone |
If nothing moves the score, the remaining suspects are the oil itself — some oils may simply suit candles or sprays better than passive diffusion — and the room, which may be larger or more ventilated than a passive diffuser can fill. 20% but cannot fragrance a 150 sq ft bedroom, the same oil for candles and diffusers? and the systematic weak-diffuser capstone cover those last steps.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. The easy sale for a fragrance supplier is "add more oil". This page tells you that at 25% more oil is the least likely fix, that a pack of reeds may solve it, and that we publish no evaporation, viscosity, throw or reed-diameter data for any CSI base, oil or reed.
Diffuser base, reed, bottle and tool prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 14 October 2026. Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 14 October 2026. Every gram split, density conversion, pack rounding, kit total and cost per bottle on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it.
Bottle counts per arm, fill weights, clarity checkpoints, the weighing schedule, the room protocol and scoring scales are labelled working practices, not industry standards — none exists for reed-diffuser strength. The 90 g fill, the example weighings (248 g, 241 g, 160 g), the 1.0 and 1.6 g/day hypotheticals and the 0–5 scale are labelled examples you replace. Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the TOTAL blend (oil g = batch g × L; base g = batch g × (1 − L)); to hit a true load on a fixed amount of base, oil = base × L ÷ (1 − L). Every ml ↔ g conversion uses a labelled example density with a ±5% sensitivity — weigh 100 ml of your own blend to get yours. Example fill 90 g per 120 ml bottle at 25%; example density 1.00 g/ml with a 0.95–1.05 band, bases sized at 0.95 g/ml; 6 and 10 reeds per bottle; 3 bottles per arm; 3% transfer loss; example weighings 248.0 g → 241.0 g over 14 days with a 160.0 g tare; hypothetical 1.0 and 1.6 g/day for the cost-per-day illustration; weighing on day 0, 3, 7, 14, 30; example 0–5 house scale. What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI measurements): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all fragrance families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", a "typical working blend" of 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours before bottling, and "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity — for oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand families, "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils", 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; for a standard 50–100 ml bottle "6–8 reeds gives a good balance". Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle: variants 50 ml and 120 ml (the page text also says "50 and 100ml"); neck diameter and fill line are not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no IFRA percentage for any oil; and no industry standard exists for an "acceptable" diffuser strength — every acceptance line on this page is the reader's labelled house standard. CSI does not sell DPG, Augeo, perfumer's alcohol, IPM or rattan reeds; CSI HyperDiffusion Base was out of stock on 14 October 2026. Costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST.
