CSI Wick Decisions · Reference Samples
Yes: every formula traceable to a retained reference. Keep the wicks by lot, linked to the formulas that use them, and the candles by batch. That is how a soot complaint becomes a test you can run.
20 wicks
retained per wick lot, sealed and labelled with the formulas that use it · our judgement
Quick answers — read this first
Should I keep an approved wick reference sample for every commercial candle formula? Yes: every formula should be traceable to a retained reference. But keep the wicks per lot, not per formula. Five formulas on two wick types might need three wick bags, not five, each labelled with the formulas that use it. Keep finished-candle retains per formula: two from the approval pour, and one or two from every production batch.

What exactly do I keep? 20 wicks from each approved or released wick lot, sealed and labelled; retained candles with their batch and lot details; and the paperwork: approval sheets, measurements, invoices and pack labels.

How long? Our judgement: until 12 months after the last candle from that lot or batch has shipped. CSI publishes no wick lot data, so your retained sample is the only record of what your candles were approved on.

What does it cost? Wicks: ₹188.80 of C2 per lot, set aside from packs you already use. Candles: at two per 50-candle batch, 4% of output; ₹56,763.17 of materials a year in the worked example. One per batch halves it.
The short answer
Yes, for every formula: but a formula's reference is a link to a wick-lot bag plus its own retained candles, not a private bag of wicks.
Retain: 20 wicks per lot; two approval candles per formula; one or two candles per production batch; every sheet and label.
Store: sealed, dry, dark, flat, at room temperature, in one labelled box, apart from production stock.
Use: to settle complaints (burn the batch retain), to release new lots (compare against the wick bag), and as the baseline for any formula change.
One reference box for the whole range Wick bags kept per lot and linked to formulas; candle retains kept per formula. Worked example. Wick bags · one per lot Candle retains · per formula F1 · Lavender F2 · Woody Oud F3 · Vanilla Bean F4 · Citrus Lemon F5 · Eucalyptus… approval · batches C2 · lot A 20 wicks · approval lot C2 · lot B 20 wicks · new lot C1 · lot A 20 wicks · approval lot 3 bags, not 5: lots are shared. Records folder approval and replicate sheets · measurement sheets · invoices · pack labels · batch sheets The bag label WICK REFERENCE · DO NOT USE IN PRODUCTION Product: Eco Candle Wicks · Thick (C2) / 1000 Wicks Invoice ______ · received __/__/____ · lot ______ (as told by supplier) 20 wicks · sealed __/__/____ · measurement sheet M-___ Used in formulas: F1, F2, F3 · approval record A-___ Keep until: 12 months after the last candle from this lot ships
Top: one reference box for a five-formula range (worked example). Wick bags are kept per lot: C2 lot A (the approval lot, used by F1–F3), C2 lot B (released in November after its lot check, used by F1 and F2) and C1 lot A (F4 and F5). Lines show which formulas each bag serves, so three bags cover five formulas. Candle retains are kept per formula: two from the approval pour (filled) and one or two from each production batch (open). Bottom: the label each wick bag carries. Blanks are yours to fill.
Straight answer
Should I keep an approved wick reference sample for every commercial candle formula?
Yes. Every formula you sell should be traceable to a physical reference of the wick it was approved on, because when a candle misbehaves months later, that reference is the only way to tell whether the wick changed, the batch was made differently, or the customer burned it differently. But organise it by wick lot, not by formula. Wicks are shared: if three formulas use Eco C2 from the same lot, one sealed bag of 20 wicks serves all three, labelled with their formula codes. A new lot gets its own bag when it's released. Keep candles by formula: two retained candles from each formula's approval pour, and one or two from each production batch, labelled with the batch, the wick lot and the oil and wax lots. Keep the paper: approval and replicate sheets, measurement sheets, invoices and pack labels, filed with the box. Store everything sealed, dry, dark and flat at room temperature, apart from production stock, and keep it (our judgement) until 12 months after the last candle from that lot or batch has shipped. CSI's Eco wick page publishes no dimensions and no lot data, so your retained wicks, not our listing, are what your candles were approved on.
One line: one sealed bag of 20 wicks per lot, linked to the formulas that use it; retained candles per formula per batch; everything labelled and kept until 12 months after the lot or batch has shipped.
A reference set costs no extra purchase: take 20 wicks from the pack you're already using (2% of an Eco C2 1,000-pack, ₹188.80 of stock). If your approved sample is used up, an Eco C2 20-pack (₹188.80) or C1 20-pack (₹118.00) is exactly one reference set, but only once it has passed a lot check against your approval records. In stock on 7 October 2026.
Eco C2 20-pack — ₹188.80

Your range, made precise

Five formulas, two wick sizes, three wick lots. How many reference samples is that?

The worked example, labelled: a range of 5 formulas, each a 150 g candle at 8% (12 g of oil and 138 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, load as a percentage of total weight) in the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram). After replicate testing, three formulas (F1 Lavender, F2 Woody Oud, F3 Vanilla Bean) were approved on Eco C2 and two (F4 Citrus Lemon, F5 Eucalyptus Spearmint) on Eco C1. Which wick each formula needed came from your tests, not from us. You produce each formula in batches of about 50, about 2 batches a month. This season you've used 3 wick lots: the C2 approval lot, a second C2 lot released in November after a lot check, and the C1 approval lot.

Kept per formula, that's 5 wick bags, and when a lot changes you'd have to remember to update every bag. Kept per lot, it's 3 bags, each labelled with the formulas it serves, and a new lot adds one bag. Both are "a reference for every formula"; the second is easier to keep true. What the master formula itself must say about the wick so purchasing reorders the right one is 6996; this post is about the physical samples and how you use them.

Safety first, plainly: a reference sample earns its keep when something has gone wrong, often a soot or heat complaint. When you burn a retained candle to investigate, treat it like any test: still air, a heat-safe surface, never unattended, and stop any session where the flame smokes continuously, approaches the glass or burns near the base. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer (CSI lists none). The jar's "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording is a pour limit, not a burn rating.

What to retain, and what each piece is for

Each item answers a different question later. Keep the ones whose questions you'll be asked.
The reference set · what, how much, and why
Quantities are our judgement for a small commercial range · worked example: five formulas, three wick lots, 50-candle batches
Item Kept per How much Answers the question
Wick reference Wick lot (approved or released) 20 wicks, sealed "Is this new pack the same wick?" and "Did the wick change before this complaint?"
Approval candles Formula 2 from the approval pour "What did this formula look and burn like when we approved it?"
Batch candles Formula × batch 1–2 per batch "Was this batch made like the approved candle?"
Measurement sheet Wick lot Length median and range, tab, photos The numbers a new lot is compared against (the lot-comparison method)
Approval record Formula Replicate sheets, limits, dates "What were the limits, and how close did we come?"
Pack labels and invoices Wick lot The label from every pack opened "Which order did this lot come from?"
Batch sheet Batch Wick lot, oil lot, wax lot, pour temperature, date "Which lots are in the candle this customer has?"

Why 20 wicks per lot (the same figure the order specification in 6993 asks you to set aside): enough to measure ten against the next lot without using any (measuring doesn't consume them), and enough for several 3 + 3 comparison burns over the lot's life, which do. Why two approval candles: one to burn if you ever need to show what "approved" looked like, one to keep. Why one or two per batch: a complaint is about a batch, and only a candle from that batch shows whether it was made like the approved one. If your batches are small, one per batch is reasonable; if they're large or go to a single corporate client, keep two.

What a retain is not (our judgement)
It isn't spare stock: never pull reference wicks to finish a production run. It isn't a shelf-life test: a retained candle sitting in a box isn't evidence of how long your candles last, and we make no shelf-life claim for any CSI material. And it isn't proof of safety: it's a record of what you made, to compare against.

Labelling, storage and how long

A sample you can't identify, or one that's been sitting in a damp cupboard, proves nothing.

Label every bag as in the diagram: what it is ("Wick reference, do not use in production"), the exact product and variant, invoice and date received, the lot if the supplier told you one, how many wicks and when sealed, the measurement sheet number, the formulas it serves, and a keep-until rule. Label every retained candle on the base: formula, batch date, wick lot, oil lot, wax lot. A formula code on the label is a pointer to the master formula, not a copy of it.

Store wicks sealed in a zip bag or airtight jar, flat so they don't kink, dry and dark, at room temperature, away from the pouring area and from heat. Indian monsoon humidity (roughly June–September) is the reason for "sealed": a wick that has absorbed moisture or dust isn't the wick you approved. Store retained candles lidded, upright, in a closed box in the coolest dark place you have. They will change slowly (scent fading, surface frosting on soy are common tendencies), which is why a retain is judged on how it burns, not how it smells after a year.

Keep them, as our judgement, until 12 months after the last candle from that lot or batch has shipped. Wicks are compact, so this costs you a shoebox, not a store-room. Approval candles and approval records stay as long as the formula is on sale, and for 12 months after you stop selling it. If you sell to a corporate client with a longer complaint or warranty window in your contract, keep that client's batch retains for the contract's period instead. None of this is legal advice; it's housekeeping that makes complaints answerable.

What retention costs · worked example
CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026 · materials only (Lavender at the 1 kg price, CSI 464 at the 10 kg price, Eco C2, the CSI 150 g jar) · excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST
Retain Quantity ₹ Note
Wick bags, this season 2 C2 lots + 1 C1 lot × 20 ₹495.60 Set aside from packs in use; per formula it would be ₹802.40
One retained candle 150 g ₹236.51 Oil ₹62.65 + wax ₹70.02 + wick ₹9.44 + jar ₹94.40
Approval candles 10 (two per formula) ₹2,365.13 Once per formula
Batch candles, two per batch 240 a year (120 batches) ₹56,763.17 4% of each 50-candle batch
Batch candles, one per batch 120 a year ₹28,381.58 2% of each batch

The wick retains are cheap; the candle retains are not. At two per batch, the worked example sets aside ₹56,763.17 of materials a year, before labour. That's the honest reason to choose one per batch for routine products and two for large or single-client batches, rather than keeping more because it feels safer.

A complaint arrives: causes, ranked, and what the retains prove

"Your candle soots." Without a retain, it's your word against theirs. With one, it's a test.

Worked example: a customer reports black smoke after about two hours from an F1 Lavender candle from a November batch. The ranking is our judgement for a complaint like this about a formula that passed replicates; signs are common observations, not CSI data. The point of the table is the "discriminating test" column: most of it needs a retain.

Cause ranking · soot complaint on an approved formula
Customer burning separated from batch making and formulation · retains are the discriminating evidence
Cause What the customer sees Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Untrimmed wick or long burns (customer burning) Soot after a few hours; carbon cap on the wick Batch retain burned per your care label is clean; a second retain started untrimmed soots Clearer care instructions; a reply with trimming advice Nothing
2. Draught: fan, AC, open window (customer burning) Flicker, soot on one side Batch retain clean in still air Placement advice on the label Nothing
3. Batch making (centring, pour) Leaning flame, one-sided pool, soot on one side Batch retain leans or burns off-centre; approval retain doesn't Production fix; check the rest of the batch Retains from that batch
4. Wick lot (formulation: material) Taller flame, bigger mushroom than usual Batch's wick-lot bag measured against the approval bag; 3 + 3 burn if it differs Hold the lot; ask the supplier 10 wicks measured, no purchase
5. Oil or wax lot (formulation: material) A change across all candles of that batch Batch retain against approval retain, same wick lot Lot record; change control Nothing
6. The formula was always at the edge (formulation: wick size) Occasional soot from several batches Approval retains themselves soot in still air Back to the replicate margin (6991) A new test

Causes 1 and 2 commonly explain soot reports on a formula that passed its tests (a common observation, not CSI data), and they're the ones a retain lets you answer kindly and with evidence: "we burned a candle from your batch under the care instructions and it burned cleanly; here's how to get the same result". Causes 3–6 are yours to fix, and without a retain you couldn't tell them from 1 and 2. The series' soot diagnosis in full is the soot hub; the published post on confirming a fix after complaints is changing a raw material after customer complaints.

The dispute burn: two retained candles and a decision rule

Burn the batch, not your memory of it.
1
Pull the records firstThe complaint batch sheet: wick lot, oil lot, wax lot, pour date. Find that batch's 2 retained candles and that wick lot's bag. Note the customer's description: when it started, how long they burned it, whether they trimmed, fan or AC.
2
Measure the wick lot against the approval reference10 wicks from the batch's lot bag against the approval lot's measurement sheet: length, tab, braid. If it's the approval lot itself, skip this.
3
Retain 1: burn it the way your label saysTrimmed to 5–6 mm, still air, 4-hour sessions, flame, mushroom, pool depth and soot card logged hourly against your approval limits. Go at least as far down the jar as the customer did; to the end if the complaint was late in the candle's life.
4
Retain 2: burn it the way the customer didSame room, but start with the wick as it came (untrimmed, or at about 10 mm) and run the session length they describe. Never recreate a fan or open window around a burning candle; draughts are judged by elimination, not by testing them.
5
If either fails, burn an approval retain beside a batch candleSame session, same room. This separates "this batch" from "this formula".
6
Decide, record, replyApply the rule below; file the burn sheet with the complaint; reply to the customer with what you found.
The dispute rule (ours, labelled)
Retain 1 passes every approval limit and retain 2 soots only when untrimmed or over-long: a burning-habit cause; reply with care advice and review your label. Retain 1 fails, the approval retain passes: a batch or lot cause; hold the rest of that batch and lot, and compare the wick lot (6994). Both fail: the formula is at the edge; stop selling it until it's retested. Limits are your approval limits, judged in each third burned. An in-house protocol, not an industry standard.

Worked example timing, labelled: 132 g above an 18 g floor at about 6 g an hour is about 22.0 hours, so roughly 6 four-hour sessions to burn a retain to the end. For a complaint that started at two hours, the first session or two usually tells you what you need to know; burn on if the answer isn't clear.

Don't do this. Don't keep wicks per formula and let the bags drift out of step with the lots in use. Don't pull reference wicks into production on a busy day. Don't store retains loose, unlabelled or in the pouring room. Don't burn your only approval candle on a routine question; that's what batch retains are for. Don't judge a year-old retain by its cold scent. And don't throw retains away the day a lot runs out: the complaints arrive after the candles have been bought, gifted and burned.

The CSI wick buy list and the step to production

Reference sets come out of the packs you buy anyway. Only your order count changes.

CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs, C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided, plus one wooden width, with nothing in between. That short range is convenient for reference keeping: a typical small range uses one or two wick products, so the box stays small. The catch, honestly: our pages publish no wick dimensions and no lot information, so we can't be your reference. Ask us on WhatsApp for the lot on the packs we send; we'll tell you what we know and say when we can't.

Reference sets · per wick lot
Per wick = pack price ÷ wicks · C1, C2 and Cotton Braided are the same per wick at every pack · Eco C1 10-pack out of stock on 7 October 2026

Performance Wooden 20 A 100-pack ₹826.00 ₹41.30 2 × 10-pack ₹1,180.00

Argued against our own interest: don't buy wicks to keep. Set 20 aside from a pack you're opening anyway; a bought "reference" pack is only a reference after it has been compared with your approval records. The production step: add retains to your order count. A 1,000-pack gives 980 usable wicks once 20 are set aside (2%); fold that into your purchase quantity (the wholesale quantity formula). Retained candles come out of batch counts too: at two per 50-candle batch, plan pours of 50 + 2.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. Festive batches are the ones that generate gifts, and complaints arrive weeks later from people who didn't buy the candle. Label your retains and wick bags before the rush starts. If you're ordering wicks for festive production, ask us for the lot on the packs, with stock, dispatch and a GST invoice.

wick · the reference you keep from every lot
Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
In the text we captured the page states no length, width or tab size, and says nothing about lots, so your retained wicks are the only physical record of what your candles were approved on. Keep 20 from the approved pack and from every new lot you release. That costs nothing extra if you take them out of a production pack (2% of a 1,000-pack); the value set aside is ₹188.80 for C2 and ₹118.00 for C1. Argued against our own interest: don't buy extra packs to keep as references; set aside wicks from the packs you already use.

wick · the one with a stated height
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
If a formula is approved on Cotton Braided, its reference bag has one advantage: the page states "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm", so you can check both your retained wicks and every new pack against a published figure as well as against each other. ₹12.00 a wick at every pack; 20 retained is ₹240.00. Limitation: one stated dimension doesn't describe the braid or the tab; photograph and measure the retained set anyway.

jar · the worked example's container
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
The worked example's jar, and a practical one for retains: the lid keeps dust and handling off a retained candle's surface. The page states "150g fill capacity", "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm" and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C", a pour limit, not a burn rating; with CSI 464 (pour 80°C–90°C) that means pouring at 80–85°C. ₹94.40 a jar in packs of 10 or 20. Limitation: a retained candle must be in the same jar as production, so this card only applies if it's your production jar.
Pack Price Per jar Use
Pack of 10 ₹944.00 ₹94.40 approval retains for five formulas
Pack of 20 ₹1,888.00 ₹94.40 same per jar

fragrance oil · herbal · formula F1
Lavender Fragrance Oil
Formula F1 in the worked example. The page describes "fresh lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes, and soft musk base" and states "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles"; 8% sits inside that and inside CSI 464's "Up to 10%". A retained Lavender candle is only a fair reference if it was poured from the same oil lot as the batch, which is why every retain label carries the oil lot. Retained candles age: scent and surface can change over months (a tendency), so judge a retain's burn, not its smell, in a dispute.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8% (12 g) Oil per candle
15 g ₹105.02 ₹7.00 1 ₹84.02
50 g ₹270.00 ₹5.40 4 ₹64.80
100 g ₹540.00 ₹5.40 8 ₹64.80
500 g ₹2,620.00 ₹5.24 41 ₹62.88
1 kg ₹5,221.00 ₹5.22 83 ₹62.65
Oil per retained candle ₹62.65 at the 1 kg price. Buy 100 g — ₹540.00

Skip for now: extra wick packs bought only to keep; a second jar type for retains (they must match production); and a reference bag for each formula when one bag per lot, labelled with its formulas, does the same job.

The CSI principle
Every formula traceable, every lot retained once. The reference is what you approved, kept where you can find it.
20 wicks per lot linked to its formulas; two approval candles per formula; one or two per batch; labels and sheets; kept 12 months past the last shipment.
"A complaint without a retained candle is an argument. With one, it's a test you can run this evening."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, jar and oil named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy wicks to keep as references, that our pages publish no wick dimensions or lot data, and that candle retains are a real cost to size sensibly.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not offered. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Cotton Braided page's 10.16 cm height, the 150 g jar's dimensions and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C", and Lavender's "6-10% for candles".

The five-formula range, the wick each formula uses, three lots, 20 wicks per lot, 50-candle batches, two batches a month, 12 months' retention, 6 g an hour and the 18 g floor are labelled worked examples or our judgement. Frequently asked questions

Should candle makers keep retained samples?
Yes, if you sell commercially: retained wicks per lot, two approval candles per formula and one or two candles per batch, labelled. They let you answer complaints and check new lots with evidence.
How many wicks should I keep as a reference?
Our working figure is 20 per wick lot: enough to measure against new lots and for several side-by-side burns. Keep one bag per lot, labelled with the formulas that use it.
How long should I keep retained candle samples?
Our judgement: until 12 months after the last candle from that batch or lot has shipped, longer if a client contract says so. Approval candles stay as long as the formula is on sale.
How should I store reference wicks?
Sealed in a zip bag or airtight jar, flat, dry and dark at room temperature, away from the pouring area, labelled "do not use in production".
What do I do when a customer says my candle soots?
Burn a retained candle from the same batch under your care instructions, and a second the way the customer described. Clean under the label points to burning habit; sooty under the label points to the batch, the wick lot or the formula.
Does CSI provide wick lot numbers?
Our pages don't publish lot data. Ask on WhatsApp when you order; we'll tell you what we know and say plainly when we can't.
Reference samples for every formula
One bag of wicks per lot, linked to its formulas; retained candles per batch; labels, sheets, and a keep-until date.
Set the wicks aside from packs you already use; no extra purchase needed. If a complaint points at a wick lot, send us the photos and measurements on WhatsApp and we'll tell you what we know about it.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on moving from a failed wick to the correct CSI wick and a bulk purchase (6981–7000). It covers keeping approved wick reference samples: organising them by lot and linking them to formulas, what else to retain and why, labelling, storage and retention time, the cost of retains, a complaint's causes ranked by what the retains prove, a two-candle dispute burn with an in-house rule, and the effect on wick purchase quantities.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), Eco Candle Wicks, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles, Premium Candle Wicking Needle. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the burn and wick advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy, Soumili Gope, Sneha Tamang, Thenirvaofficial. The reviews from Ashwini are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: the 150 g candle at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax, total-weight basis) in the CSI 150 g jar is the worked example; which wick each formula uses comes from the reader's own tests, not CSI data. Five formulas, three wick lots, 20 wicks per lot, 50-candle batches, two batches a month, one or two retains per batch, 12 months' retention, 6 g an hour and an 18 g floor are labelled worked examples or our judgement; the dispute rule is an in-house protocol. Retained candles change slowly in storage (a tendency); CSI makes no shelf-life claim. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Not legal advice. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
