What Does 10% Fragrance Load Mean in Candle Making?

Is 10% the maximum? It depends which page you read. On CSI 464 it is: the page states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%". On Chunks it is the recommended figure inside an 8–13% range, and on CSI 468 it is three points below a stated 13% ceiling.
What does it cost? ₹56.64 to ₹152.92 of oil in a 200 g candle across the five oils costed here. Moving from 8% to 10% costs ₹9.30 to ₹28.55 a candle net of the wax you no longer buy — and a 1 kg bottle that made 62 candles now makes 50.
Will it smell 25% stronger? No. Twenty grams is 25% more oil than 16 g, but perceived strength does not rise in step with concentration, and cure, wick and pool matter more. Test it: three jars at 8% against three at 10%, scored blind at day 14.
20 g, 180 g and 111 g per kilo
Load here is a share of the finished candle, so a 200 g candle at 10% holds 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. Weighed against the wax instead, the same load is 111.11 g of oil per kilogram — and this is the load where the two conventions diverge most visibly, because 10% of wax weight is only 9.09% of the finished candle. On a wax whose ceiling is stated as 10%, that difference is the difference between sitting on the limit and sitting just under it. The fourth column is the one to take to a production meeting. At 10%, one kilogram of oil is fifty 200 g candles or twenty 500 g three-wicks — the largest fragrance pack CSI lists, turned into a finite number of units. A maker pouring 250 candles a month at 10% is buying five kilograms of a single scent, which is why the bulk line exists.
Ceiling, recommendation or mid-band: the same 10%, read three ways
This is what makes 10% different from the other loads in the series. Six and eight per cent sit comfortably inside the published ranges; thirteen is available on only two waxes. Ten sits exactly on the edge of one wax's stated capacity while being another's recommended figure — so "I pour at 10%" says nothing until you know which wax, and 10% of what.

The practical rule is the same one this series applies everywhere: take the lower of the wax figure and the oil figure, and treat it as a formulation limit rather than a target. These figures come from the maker of each material and describe what the material is built to do; they are not regulatory limits, and CSI never recommends pouring above the lower of the two. What 10% costs, and what the bottle loses
Two costs come with the top of the band. The obvious one is the extra four grams per 200 g candle. The one makers forget is coverage: the same 1 kg bottle now scents twelve fewer candles, so the reorder comes round sooner and the cash sits in fragrance instead of in glass. Set the last column against your selling price before the decision feels abstract. On Sandalwood at 10%, oil and CSI 464 together come to ₹191.87 a candle before glass, wick, lid, label and box — and the wax has quietly become the smaller half of that figure. That inversion is the real signature of a 10% recipe: your fragrance, not your wax, is now your main material cost, and each rupee on the oil's kilogram price now lands on 20 g of it instead of 12 g.
Diminishing returns, honestly
This is where most load advice overreaches. CSI publishes no burn-test results, no lab data and no measurements of throw, so nothing here will tell you that 10% is any particular percentage stronger than 8%. What can be said is structural, and it is enough to plan with.
First, perceived smell intensity does not rise in proportion to concentration. It is a general property of the sense of smell that doubling the amount of an odorant in the air produces much less than a doubling in how strong it seems — which is why a 25% increase in oil does not read as a 25% increase in anything. Second, a candle only releases what its melt pool can carry: the pool's area and temperature cap the rate at which fragrance leaves the wax, and that cap belongs to the wick, the vessel diameter and the wax, not to the load. Third, the wax has a finite capacity to hold oil in solution, which is exactly what the stated ceilings describe — and beyond it the extra oil does not sit politely in the candle, it separates, sweats or drowns the wick. Together those three give an expectation rather than a promise: the 8%-to-10% step is the smallest of the load steps perceptually and the largest in cost. It can still be the right move — base-heavy woody, gourmand and oud accords are where makers most often keep it — but it is the step that most deserves a test, because the cost is certain and the benefit is not. What 10% asks of your process
Raising a load changes three things besides the smell: how much oil the wax has to dissolve, how much of it the wick has to carry, and how much can go wrong while the candle cures. None of that is a reason to avoid 10%. It is a reason to watch a 10% batch more closely than an 8% one, on a schedule.

Two oils worth 10% of the jar
If you are going to spend the extra four grams, spend them where a full published specification tells you the oil was built for it. Both of these state a candle load that reaches 10%, a measured flash point and their vanillin content — which is the complete set of figures a CSI oil page can give you.

When 10% is right, and when it is just expensive
Four cases where the published figures and the arithmetic support 10%, and three where they do not. None of these is a substitute for your own cured comparison; they are where to place your bet before you run it.

One closing piece of arithmetic. At 250 candles a month the 8%-to-10% step on Sandalwood is ₹4,519.40 a month and ₹54,232.80 a year, net of the wax you no longer buy; six jars and a fortnight cost about ₹1,541.08 of materials. The position taken here is the opposite: 10% is a legitimate, sometimes excellent choice, and it should be bought after a cured comparison rather than by default.

Flash points appear only for the 18 oils that publish a measured value; the shared "> 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" line is a threshold for alcohol-based products and is never reported here as an oil's flash point.
