Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy for White Candles?
Aktie
Will they definitely stay white? Nobody can promise that. CSI has no discolouration test data, and a page line such as "0% vanillin" is the page's claim about one molecule. The shortlist lowers the risk; your own test decides.
How should I buy? 50 g of three shortlisted oils, eight jars (a light and a dark jar per oil, plus an unscented pair), 14 days. ₹755.20 for the oils, ₹1,699.20 with a pack of ten clear 150 g jars. Only the winner goes to 500 g.
What does a white candle's oil cost? From ₹34.08 per 150 g candle at 8% at the 500 g price (the least expensive oil on the shortlist) to ₹107.52 (the dearest), against ₹92.16 for Vanilla Bean.

Before you buy: is your white problem actually the oil?
If you are here because a white candle already changed colour, do one free check before you spend: pour a plain, unscented jar from the same wax and keep it beside the discoloured candle for a week. If the plain jar drifts too, the wax or the light is doing it, and none of the oils below will help; a vessel or storage change will (the hub, Why Is My Fragrance Oil Turning My Candle Yellow?, has the full cause-finder). If the candle was beige from the day you poured it, the oil's own colour or a dye is the more likely cause (My White Candle Turns Beige After Adding Fragrance Oil — Why?). Only when the plain jar stays white and your scented one does not is an oil change the right purchase.
Four buying rules that build the shortlist
We applied four rules to all 102 CSI oil listings. They are stricter than the general risk map in Which Fragrance Oils Cause Candle Discoloration?, because a white candle forgives less than a cream or coloured one.
| Rule | What it removes | Why, for a white candle |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · No darkening note named | Any oil whose notes or title name vanilla, a sweet gourmand note (caramel, sugar, praline, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, honey, tonka, benzoin, butter, maple, dates), a warm spice (cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice) or amber | These notes tend to yellow or brown over time; amber accords are often warm and resinous, so we leave them out as a precaution |
| 2 · A stated candle load | Pages that give no candle load, including perfume-grade listings whose usage rates are for perfume | You need a load you can work to inside your wax's ceiling |
| 3 · Not a brand-inspired listing | Oils sold under another company's brand name | They cost far more per gram and you should not use the brand on your label anyway |
| 4 · In stock at 50 g and 500 g | Oils you cannot test small and then buy in quantity today | The whole method is 50 g first, 500 g after |
Seventeen oils survive. Rule 1 does the heavy lifting: it removes the vanilla-named oils, which on CSI's range are the largest group (see the risk map), along with coffee, bakery, spice and amber blends. Rules 2 to 4 remove the perfume-grade and brand-inspired listings and the ones out of stock at a size you need. What is left is not "discolouration-free"; it is the part of the range where the stated notes give you the best starting odds.
How to read a page that is silent on vanillin
Seven of the seventeen pages say nothing about vanillin, nine state 0% or no vanillin, and Gardenia states 0.2%. Silence is not a warning; most CSI pages are silent. For those, the notes are the evidence: British Rose's "fresh, dewy rose petals with subtle green undertones" is a very different starting point from a floral that settles into "powdery vanilla". If a silent page matters to your decision, ask on WhatsApp. The page-stated 0% oils are not a safer bet by definition; they have told you about vanillin, and nothing about the rest of the blend.
The 17-oil shortlist, with prices

| Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) | earthy/woody (petrichor) | silent | ₹448.00 | ₹4,480.00 | ₹107.52 | all sizes in stock |
Four facts from the table that change what you buy. Citronella is among the least expensive per candle at 500 g, but its 50 g is 2.6 times the 500 g price per gram, so it is a poor oil to test small; if you want it, ask for a sample on WhatsApp. It is a scent choice only: we make no claims for it beyond fragrance. Blue Ocean is fractionally dearer per gram at 500 g than at 50 g, so size buys you nothing. Sage and Cedarwood's 1 kg costs more per gram than its 500 g. Vetiver's 1 kg is out of stock on 25 September 2026; its 500 g and smaller sizes are available, and its notes mention "subtle green and sweet undertones", which is worth watching in the light jar.
What we left out, and why some of it is still worth a test
Rule 1 removes oils that may well stay pale in your wax, because their notes name something from the darkening list. Three examples. Palo Santo's page states "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)", but its notes include "warm amber". Neroli states 0% vanillin but names "honey". Woody Oud names amber and spice. If your range needs one of these characters, test it with the same eight-jar method; the rule is a precaution, not a verdict. The opposite also happens: an oil on the shortlist can still tint or yellow, which is why every one of them goes through the jars.
The oils we would not start a white range with are the vanillas. Vanilla Bean's page states "Vanillin Content: 2.5% (Potential discoloration…)", and at ₹92.16 per candle at 500 g it is also among the dearer oils. Whether to use vanilla in white candles at all, and how, is the policy question in Should I Avoid Vanilla Fragrances When Making White Candles?; the families that tend to stay palest, with reasons, are in Best Fragrance Types for Minimal Discoloration in Candles.
| Oil | Page on vanillin | Note that removed it | Worth a test when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palo Santo | "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)" | "warm amber", "a touch of incense" | You want a resinous, calm white candle and will accept testing |
| Neroli | "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)" | "honey" | You want an orange-blossom floral |
| Woody Oud | Not stated | "amber", "spice top notes" | A cream or warm-toned range, not a stark white one |
| Vanilla Bean | "2.5% (Potential discoloration…)" | vanilla | Only in an amber jar or a warm-toned range |
Buy small, test, then buy big: the eight-jar order
This is a buying sequence, not a laboratory protocol: it tells you which of three shortlisted oils to put money into. The full 30-day pre-bulk protocol with pass and fail criteria is How to Test Fragrance Oil for Discoloration Before Bulk Production. Pick three oils with different characters from the shortlist; the worked example uses Eucalyptus Spearmint, British Rose and Verbena. Pour in the vessel you sell in; the example uses the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), because clear glass shows everything.
| Jars | Contents | Where | Compared with |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Unscented, 150 g | one bright shelf, one box | the reference white |
| 3–4 | Eucalyptus Spearmint, 12 g + 138 g wax | one bright shelf, one box | jars 1–2 |
| 5–6 | British Rose, 12 g + 138 g wax | one bright shelf, one box | jars 1–2 |
| 7–8 | Verbena, 12 g + 138 g wax | one bright shelf, one box | jars 1–2 |
Oil: 24 g of each, which leaves 26 g in each 50 g bottle: enough for two more 8% candles per oil when you move on to a burn test, because a white candle that stays white but does not throw is not a product. Wax: 1,128 g from one melt. Jars: eight of the ten in the pack. No wicks are needed to judge colour.
| Item | What you use | New spend | Value consumed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eucalyptus Spearmint 50 g + British Rose 50 g + Verbena 50 g | 24 g of each | ₹755.20 | ₹362.50 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), pack of 10 | 8 jars | ₹944.00 | ₹755.20 |
| Your wax (valued as CSI 464 at ₹0.51/g) | 1,128 g | already owned | ₹572.35 |
| Total | 8 jars | ₹1,699.20 | ₹1,690.04 (₹211.26 per jar) |
The five picks
Five oils from the shortlist, covering fresh, floral, green, citrus-herbal and woody. They are chosen on stated notes, stated candle load, page vanillin wording, price per gram and stock at every size on 25 September 2026; not on colour stability or throw, which CSI has not measured. White candles for Christmas, 25 December 2026
Christmas falls on 25 December 2026, 91 days after these prices were checked, and white candles are a staple of winter gifting and corporate hampers. That leaves time for the eight-jar order, a burn test of the survivors, and a cured production batch, with a margin for dispatch. Dispatch time depends on your location; confirm it on WhatsApp.
| By | Days from 25 Sep | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| 1 October 2026 | 6 | Three 50 g bottles arrive; bottle photos on white paper; pour the eight jars. |
| 15 October 2026 | 20 | Day-14 colour verdict; pour two burn-test candles of each survivor. |
| 29 October 2026 | 34 | Burn tests at day 14; choose the winner; order 500 g. |
| 10 November 2026 | 46 | Production pour: 41 candles of 150 g at 8% from 500 g. |
| 10 December 2026 | 76 | Day-30 look at a kept-back production jar against an unscented one; pack and dispatch. |
| 25 December 2026 | 91 | Christmas. |
Worked example: 41 British Rose candles at 8% from 500 g (₹1,593.00), with CSI 464, 50 clear 150 g jars (five packs of 10, ₹4,720.00; two packs of 20 plus one of 10 cost the same, ₹4,720.00) and 41 Eco C1 wicks, come to ₹9,425.77, or ₹229.90 per candle with all 50 jars charged to the batch, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. One such candle, costed per unit, is ₹208.55; the same candle with Vanilla Bean at its 500 g price is ₹262.48, and would be unlikely to stay white. Nine jars are left over for your day-30 control and your next test round.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every oil on this shortlist and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you to buy 50 g before 500 g, to pour an unscented jar before any oil, and not to buy our 1 kg Sage and Cedarwood at all. A customer who builds a white range that stays white comes back for the next one.
Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; the shortlist includes only oils in stock at 50 g and 500 g, and the one size out of stock on that date (Vetiver 1 kg) is flagged. Vanillin lines, loads, cures and notes are quoted from product pages and are the pages' claims; where a page is silent, we say so.
The four buying rules, the shortlist, the picks and the eight-jar order are editorial judgement from stated notes and common candle-making practice; CSI has no discolouration test data for any oil. Non-price figures: the shortlist applies the four rules to CSI's 102 oil listings as captured on 25 September 2026, using each page's stated notes, title, candle-load wording and stock. Candle maths assume a 150 g candle with load as a percentage of total weight (8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax); Cucumber Green Tea's "per pound of wax" wording is read as total weight. Candle counts are whole candles, floor(grams ÷ 12). Wax ceilings are as stated on the wax pages. The rules, the treatment of amber, the picks and the eight-jar order are editorial judgement, not CSI test data. Costs are worked examples excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST.
