Quick answers — read this first
Can hot weather make a candle sweat? Yes. Warmth reduces how much fragrance oil the wax will hold and softens the wax structure, so oil that was bound in a cool room becomes free oil in a hot one. Heat does not create surplus oil — it exposes a recipe that had no margin.

How do I know it is the weather and not my recipe? By the calendar. If the same recipe, same wax, same oil and same method was clean in December and beads in May, the recipe is marginal, not wrong. That changes the fix: you tighten the recipe, you do not replace the wax.

What do I actually change? Work a point or two below the stated ceiling in the hot months — 7–8% in CSI 464 against its stated 10%, 10–11% in Luxury Soy Chunks against its stated 13% — add the oil at the stated temperature with a full two-minute stir, then cure and store cool.

Where does the heat actually reach the candle? Rarely at the pour. Usually in an uninsulated store room, a metal-roofed workshop, a courier van standing in the sun, a parcel left at a door at two in the afternoon, or a shop window.
The short answer
Yes, heat causes sweating — as a trigger, not a cause. The cause is a load the wax cannot hold. Warmth lowers the amount it will hold, so the same number crosses the line in summer that stayed inside it in winter. The mechanism itself is set out in why is my candle sweating oil.
The diagnostic: clean in winter, sweating in summer, nothing else changed = a marginal recipe. Tighten the load and control the heat. Sweating in both seasons = a recipe fault, and that is a different page.

Why the complaint arrives in the hot months and not in the cool ones. The dashed line is your fragrance load — a fixed number, decided once and used all year. The curve is the amount of oil the wax will keep in solution, which falls as the ambient temperature rises. In the cool months the load sits comfortably under the curve and the candle is clean. From late March the curve drops beneath the load and the surplus has nowhere to go. The scale is relative, not measured: this is the shape of the problem, not a temperature reading for your city.

Yes, and between March and June it is the honest reason most Indian makers see it. Warmth does two things at once: it lowers the amount of fragrance oil the wax will keep in solution, and it softens the wax so that free oil travels more easily to the surface. A load that sat just inside the ceiling in a December workshop sits just outside it in a May store room. Heat is a trigger, not a cause — the cause is the quantity of oil you weighed in against what the wax can hold, and the solubility limit that governs it is explained in full on the sibling pages. Marginal, not wrong: the diagnostic that decides everything else

A recipe that fails in one season and passes in another is not a broken recipe. It is a recipe with no margin, and margin is cheaper to buy than a new wax.

Before you change anything, answer one question: did this exact recipe produce clean candles in the cool months? Same wax, same oil, same load, same add temperature, same jars. If the answer is yes, you are not looking at a fault. You are looking at a recipe that was always sitting close to the limit, and a season that has moved the limit down to meet it.

The distinction matters because the two situations have completely different fixes, and makers routinely apply the expensive one to the cheap problem. A wrong recipe — one that sweats in December as well as in May — has a real fault in it: a load above the stated ceiling, oil added far below the specified band, or a wax and oil pairing that never held. That is what the elimination sequence for sweating is for, and you should run it. A marginal recipe has no fault at all. Every number in it is defensible. It simply has nothing spare, and an Indian summer does not leave anything spare alone.

Pour four 70 g votives from one melt at your normal load and put them in four different places for seven days: a cool interior cupboard, your usual store room, a shelf that catches afternoon sun, and a closed vehicle for one afternoon. Where the heat actually reaches the candle

Makers picture the danger as the pouring day, which is the one part of the process they watch. In practice a candle spends a few hours being made and then weeks or months being stored, carried and displayed, and every one of those hours is an opportunity for the wax to warm up and give something back. Here are the five places it happens in an Indian supply chain, in the order they cost people money, and the control for each.

The uninsulated store room — the commonest, and the one you ownMost small candle businesses in India store finished stock in a spare room, a loft, a cupboard on an outside wall, or a corner of the workshop. Through the hot months an interior room with a west-facing wall runs warmer than the rest of the flat all afternoon and stays warm well into the night, because the wall keeps radiating after sunset. That is not a spike, it is a continuous soak, and a continuous soak is exactly what pushes a marginal recipe over. Control: move finished stock to the coolest interior wall you have, off the floor and off any external wall, keep cartons closed, and never store finished candles above a fridge, a geyser, an inverter or anything else with a warm back. Rotate stock so nothing sits through the whole of May.

The metal-roofed workshop — a curing problem disguised as a pouring problemA tin or asbestos roof over a working space turns the room into an oven from late morning onward, and the candles poured that morning are still curing in it. Cure is when the wax is settling into its final crystal structure; doing that in a room that swings from cool at dawn to punishing by two in the afternoon is how you get surface faults that were not present in the pitcher. Control: pour early, then move the trays out of the roof space to cure — an interior room, a lower floor, anywhere with a ceiling that is not directly under the sun. If the workshop is the only space you have, cure on the floor rather than at shelf height and cover the trays loosely. The same logic that governs room temperature and wet spots applies here: the room after the pour matters as much as the room during it.

The courier van standing in the sun — the one nobody seesA closed vehicle parked in direct sun gets substantially hotter inside than the air outside, and a parcel does not spend its journey moving. It spends it in a hub, on a trolley, in the back of a van at a stop, and in a loading bay. This is the stage that produces the complaint you cannot reproduce: the jar was perfect when it left you and beaded before it was opened. Control: you cannot air-condition a courier network, so buy margin instead. Anything shipping between March and June should be poured at the hot-month load, not the cool-month one, and packed with the jar upright and immobilised so that any oil that does surface is not smeared across the label. Use the packaging materials that keep the jar from rolling.

The parcel left at the door at two in the afternoonThe last hundred metres are the least controlled part of the whole chain. A parcel left outside a flat, on a gate, with a guard's desk in a sunlit lobby, or in a locked delivery box can sit for hours at the hottest part of the day. Control: this one is solved with words, not materials. Put a line on the outside of the parcel and in the dispatch message asking that it be brought indoors promptly and not left in a vehicle. It costs nothing, it sets the expectation, and when a customer does report beading you have a shared reference point rather than an argument.

The shop window and the display shelfIf you sell through retail, a stockist's window is the harshest place your candle will ever live: direct sun through glass, all day, for weeks. Wax in a window softens, oil surfaces, labels lift, and colour fades. The stockist then tells you your candles are faulty. Control: supply window displays as dummies or as your cheapest line, keep the sellable stock in the shaded interior of the shop, and say so in writing when you take the account. Add it to your stockist sheet alongside the storage line. A retailer who knows why will usually cooperate; one who does not will simply return the stock.
The seasonal principle
You cannot control the temperature your candle will meet. You can control how much oil is in it when it gets there.
Every item on the list above is either outside your building or outside your business. The only variable that is entirely yours is the load, which is why the seasonal recipe below is the whole fix and everything else is damage limitation.

Designing a summer-safe recipe

Three changes, in order of how much they matter. One: work a little below the stated ceiling from March to June instead of at it. Two: add the fragrance at the temperature the wax specifies and stir for two full timed minutes, so that every gram you did add is actually dissolved rather than suspended. Three: cure and store cool, so the candle spends its most vulnerable fortnight in the best conditions you can give it.

Two things about the table below. The stated ceiling column is the wax manufacturer's formulation limit and does not move with the weather — it is the same figure in January and in May. The working load columns are our recommendation for Indian conditions, not a manufacturer specification, and they are deliberately conservative. Nobody publishes a temperature-adjusted solubility figure for these waxes, so treat the working loads as a starting point that you confirm with the one-week heat test above.

Two points is not a small change, and that is the point. On a 200 g candle in CSI 464, moving from 10% to 8% is the difference between 20 g and 16 g of oil. That is a fifth of the fragrance in the jar. It will smell slightly quieter on the cold throw and most customers will not be able to tell in the room, because a candle that is not sweating throws better than one that is — free oil on the surface is not in the melt pool and is not doing any work. This is the wax most summer sweating reports arrive with, and the reason is arithmetic rather than quality — 10% is a tighter ceiling than most makers assume, so a maker who runs at 10% all year has left themselves nothing at all for the hot months. If you are running heavy woody, gourmand or oriental scents and you do not want to give up two points of fragrance in the summer, this is the wax with the room to lose them from. Dropping from 13% to 11% still leaves 22 g of oil in a 200 g candle — more than CSI 464 carries at its own ceiling. The two-minute stir is not optional in summer, and it is the cheapest thing on this page. Oil that was dispersed rather than dissolved behaves like surplus oil the moment the jar warms up, so a short stir and a hot store room compound each other. Soy specifically: a low-melt-point wax in a 40-degree room

Container soy waxes are formulated to melt at low temperatures, because that is what makes them good container waxes — a clean, even melt pool at candle-flame temperatures and a smooth surface on cooling. That same property is what makes them the wax most sensitive to an Indian summer. A room in the low forties is much closer to the softening behaviour of a container soy than most makers assume. The wax does not have to reach a puddle for the problem to start: well before anything visibly melts, the structure loosens, the crystal matrix relaxes, and oil that was held between the crystals is free to move.

We are not going to publish a melt point here, because the figure that matters is the one on the specification for the exact wax you bought, and quoting a general number would invite you to plan around it. What you can plan around without any number at all is the behaviour: soy softens earlier than paraffin, it holds less oil when it is warm than when it is cool, and a jar that feels even slightly yielding under thumb pressure has already lost some of its grip.

The thumb test, free, ten seconds
Press your thumb firmly on the top of a cured candle that has been sitting in your store room. If it takes a print, the wax is above the temperature at which it is holding oil reliably, and anything at or near your ceiling in that room is at risk. Do it at three in the afternoon, not at nine in the morning — the morning reading is the one that flatters your storage. Do it in a different room to compare; if the interior cupboard jar resists and the store room jar prints, you have located the problem and it is not the recipe.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a wax with a higher stated ceiling gives you somewhere to retreat to, which is why Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at up to 13% is easier to run through a hot season than CSI 464 at up to 10% — not because it is a better wax, but because two points off 13 still leaves you a usable candle. Second, blends behave differently from straight soy: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 at ₹325 / 500 g and ₹6,370 / 10 kg is worth a side-by-side test if a particular scent is giving you trouble in the heat, but test it as a trial, not as a fleet change, and read how to verify wax quality before you buy before you commit to any new material on the strength of one hot month.

Storage and dispatch in the hot months

A correct recipe can still arrive as a defective candle. The last week of a candle's life before the customer opens it is the week you have thought about least.

Once the load is right, the remaining exposure is logistical, and the fixes are unglamorous. Cartons out of the sun. Nothing stored against an external wall or on a roof terrace. Stock rotated so that no jar sits through an entire hot month waiting for an order. Sealed cartons rather than open shelves, because a closed box buffers a swing better than a shelf does and keeps direct light off the glass.

Then dispatch timing, which is the change most makers have never considered. Ship early in the week. A parcel handed over on a Monday or Tuesday moves through the network while it is being actively worked; a parcel handed over late on a Friday can sit in a hub over a weekend, and a weekend in a hub in May is precisely the continuous soak that finds a marginal recipe. If a customer orders on Thursday afternoon in the hot season, there is nothing wrong with holding the parcel until Monday and telling them why — you will get more goodwill from an honest note about heat than from a dispatch notification followed by a beaded jar.

The care sticker is the cheapest insurance on the list and it does two jobs at once. It carries the standing burn instructions your candle needs anyway, and in the hot months it carries the line that saves you a refund: keep the candle out of direct sunlight and do not leave it in a parked car. What to tell a customer whose candle arrived sweating in May

Say what happened. The single worst response is the one most makers give, which is to call it condensation or moisture, because the customer can smell the fragrance on their fingers and knows perfectly well it is not water. The second worst is silence followed by a replacement, because you have paid for a second candle and taught yourself nothing.

Say whether it is safe to burnAnswer this before they ask. Ask one question, and log the answer"Roughly how long was the parcel with you before you opened it, and where was it kept?" You are building a record of which routes, which couriers and which months produce beading. After one hot season you will know whether your problem is your store room, your load or one specific delivery lane — and that is the difference between guessing next April and deciding.

One thing not to do: do not wipe stock clean before dispatch and ship it anyway. Wiping removes the beads that have surfaced and leaves the surplus behind, so the candle looks perfect leaving you and beads again a fortnight later at the customer's end. You have converted a batch you could have written off into a refund, a return and a review. If a batch beads on your own shelf in the heat, it is burn-test stock or staff stock, not sale stock.

Against our own interest, plainly. The fix on this page is a lower fragrance load for four months of the year, which means we sell you less fragrance oil. On a 200 g candle in CSI 464 with Sandalwood at ₹5,026.80 / 1 kg, dropping from 10% to 8% removes 4 g of oil per candle — ₹20.11 of oil we do not sell you, less ₹2.03 of extra wax we do, so ₹18.08 a candle and ₹1,084.80 across a sixty-jar run that comes off our invoice and stays in your pocket. We are recommending it anyway, for the same reason we publish the ceilings instead of leaving them vague: a maker whose summer batches come back sweating stops pouring, and a supplier whose customers stop pouring has nothing to sell in November. If you want the counter-argument tested honestly, run the two loads side by side for a week in your own store room and let the jars decide.

And if the margin genuinely costs you a scent you cannot afford to weaken, the correct move is still not a bigger number. It is a different oil, a heavier base, a smaller jar for a smaller room, or a wax with more headroom — the trade-offs are in premium versus cheap fragrance oils, and the pricing consequences of any of them belong in how to price candles in India in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can hot weather really make a candle sweat fragrance oil?
Yes. Warmth reduces the amount of oil the wax will keep in solution and softens the wax so that free oil can travel to the surface. It does not create surplus oil — it exposes a load the wax was only just holding. That is why the same recipe can be clean on a December shelf and beaded in a May store room with nothing in your process having changed. My candles were fine all winter and started sweating in April. Is my wax faulty?
Almost certainly not, and changing it is the expensive wrong turn. A recipe that passes in one season and fails in another is marginal rather than wrong — every number in it is defensible, it simply has no headroom. Drop the working load one to two points for the hot months, keep everything else the same, and take the load back up in November. What fragrance load should I use in an Indian summer?
Stay inside the stated ceiling and sit below it. For CSI 464, whose stated ceiling is up to 10%, we suggest 7–8% from March to June; for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, stated up to 13%, we suggest 10–11%. On a 200 g candle that is 14–16 g of oil and 20–22 g respectively. Those working loads are our recommendation for Indian storage conditions, not a manufacturer figure — confirm them with four votives in four locations for a week before you commit a production run.
Is it the humidity of the monsoon, or the heat?
The heat. Sweating is fragrance oil coming out of solution, and humidity does not change how much oil wax will dissolve. Press a dry white tissue onto the surface: if it lifts away translucent and smelling of your fragrance, it is oil. Monsoon months are often less of a problem than the dry heat of April and May because the ambient temperature drops. Humidity does affect surface appearance and glass contact, which is a different fault — see does room temperature affect candle wet spots.
What is the melt point of your soy wax, and will it survive 40°C?
We will not quote a melt point in a blog post, because the number that matters is the one on the specification for the exact wax and batch you bought. What we can say without a number: container soy is a low-melt-point wax by design, it softens well before it looks melted, and a jar that takes a thumbprint in your store room at three in the afternoon has already loosened its grip on the oil.
A customer's candle arrived beaded. What do I say?
Tell them the truth in one sentence — "those beads are fragrance oil, not water; wax holds less oil when it is warm and the parcel has been hot somewhere" — confirm it is safe to wipe and burn, replace it without argument, and tell them you have moved your summer batches to a lower load. Then ask how long the parcel sat before they opened it and where, and log the answer. After one hot season those logs tell you whether the problem is your store room, your load or one delivery lane.
Should I just stop pouring between March and June?
No, and most Indian makers cannot afford to — the wedding season and the run-up to festive production both sit in the warm half of the year, with Diwali on 8 November 2026 meaning the bulk of festive pouring happens while it is still warm in much of the country. Pour through it with the hot-month load, cure in the coolest room you have, dispatch early in the week, and put a care sticker at ₹0.83 on every jar. The season is a constraint to design around, not a reason to stop.
