Quick answers — read this first
How many grams is an 8–10% fragrance load? Load is a percentage of the finished candle. A 200g candle takes 16g of oil at 8%, 18g at 9% and 20g at 10%; a 100g candle takes 8g, 9g and 10g; a 150g jar 12g, 13.5g and 15g.

Which waxes support 8–10%? Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (stated 8–13%, 10% recommended) and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 (up to 13%) hold it with room to spare. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is stated up to 10%, so 10% is its ceiling, not its middle.

Which oils work at the 8% end? A British Rose buyer wrote that "you can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell"; Lavender, Roasted Coffee, Woody Oud and Orchard Pear all have reviews describing strong or very good scent. Start those at 8%.

What does 10% cost over 8%? Four more grams of oil per 200g candle: ₹12.27 on British Rose, ₹20.88 on Lavender at 1 kg prices — ₹1,227.20 and ₹2,088.40 per 100 candles.
The short answer
Weigh it as a share of the finished candle: oil = candle weight × load; wax = the rest. For a batch, oil = wax × load ÷ (100 − load).
Start at 8%, earn 10%: pour both, cure 14 days, and only keep 10% if it is clearly stronger with no sweating or soot.
Match the load to the wax's stated limit: 10% sits mid-range in Luxury Soy Chunks and CSI 468, but at the ceiling in CSI 464; waxes with no stated load start at 8%.

Going from 8% to 10% is a 25% increase in oil, not a 2% one: 16g becomes 20g. That is why the step is worth testing rather than assuming — on Lavender it adds ₹20.88 to every 200g candle before you know whether a customer can smell the difference.
Straight answer
How much fragrance oil is an 8–10% load, which waxes and oils suit it, and is 10% worth the extra cost?
An 8–10% load means the oil is 8–10% of the finished candle's weight: 16–20g in a 200g candle, 12–15g in a 150g jar, 8–10g in a 100g candle. For a batch, oil = wax × load ÷ (100 − load), so a kilo of wax takes 86.96g at 8%, 98.90g at 9% and 111.11g at 10%. Every CSI wax with a stated load covers the range: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended, CSI 468 up to 13%, and CSI 464 up to 10% — its ceiling. Start oils with strength evidence at 8%: British Rose (₹3,068/kg), whose reviewer says the minimum percentage "will give amazing smell", and Lavender (₹5,221/kg), with two hot-throw reviews. A fresh oil such as Citrus Lemon (₹2,832/kg) is the natural candidate to test at 10%, and the cheapest place to spend it. Is 10% worth it? Only if a cured candle proves it: the extra 4g costs ₹11.33–₹30.58 per 200g candle across ten oils, and more oil does not automatically mean more scent.
One line: 8–10% is 16–20g in a 200g candle; pour 8% and 10% side by side, cure both, and pay for the extra 4g only when you can smell it.

What an 8–10% load actually means — and the two ways people calculate it

Two makers can both say "10%" and pour candles with different amounts of oil. The difference is which number the percentage is taken from.

There are two conventions in common use. The one this guide and the rest of the CSI series use is load as a share of the finished candle: a 200g candle at 10% is 20g of oil plus 180g of wax. The other is load as a share of the wax: weigh the wax, then add 10% of that weight in oil — 180g of wax plus 18g of oil. Both are legitimate. The trouble starts when a recipe written in one is poured in the other, or when you compare your load with a wax's stated ceiling without knowing which basis you used.

Working: under the wax method, oil = wax × load, so 184 × 0.08 = 14.72g and 180 × 0.10 = 18g; the true share is oil ÷ (wax + oil), e.g. 18 ÷ 198 = 9.09%. In the 8–10% range the gap is under one percentage point, so neither method will ruin a candle. It matters most at a wax's ceiling. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' page states its recommended load as "8% to 13% of total wax weight", while CSI 464 and CSI 468 simply state "up to" figures. Pick one convention, write it at the top of every recipe card, and use it for every batch. The finished-candle method has one practical advantage: your jar's fill weight is the number you start from, and the grams fall straight out of it.

The mistake: a "10%" recipe that is really 11%. Pour 20g of oil into 180g of wax and you have 10% of the finished candle — but 11.1% of the wax weight (20 ÷ 180). If a wax's ceiling is meant on a wax-weight basis, that recipe sits above a 10% limit while the card says it is at it. CSI 464's page does not say which basis its "up to 10%" uses, which is one more reason to work at 8–9% in that wax. The same confusion runs the other way when a helper adds 10% of the wax on top of a full jar's fill and overflows it. Fix it once: define load on the card as "oil ÷ finished candle weight" and list grams of wax and oil per jar size, so nobody calculates at the bench.

Here is the whole range worked out for nine candle sizes on the finished-candle basis. The middle column matters more than most makers expect: 9% is a real option, not a compromise, and it is often where a candle that was nearly right at 8% lands.

Working: oil = candle weight × load; wax = candle weight − oil; candles per kilo of oil = 1,000 ÷ oil per candle, rounded down (1,000 ÷ 18 = 55.6 → 55). CSI vessels with a stated fill that match rows in this table include the Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram, the Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid (120 gm), the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150g fill) and the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar (500 gm size). Half a gram is a real error at this scale
In a 50g candle, the whole difference between 8% and 10% is one gram. A kitchen scale that reads in whole grams cannot tell 4g from 5g reliably, so small-candle makers are often pouring a load they cannot actually measure. Weigh oil for small candles by the batch — for twenty 50g candles at 9%, that is 90g, where a gram either way barely moves the load — or use a ₹354 candle making weighing scale and weigh the batch, never the individual candle.

Which CSI waxes support an 8–10% load

A wax's stated fragrance load is the most oil it has been formulated to hold. What you want to know is where 8–10% sits inside that figure — comfortably in the middle, or right at the edge. The table covers every CSI candle wax and what its product page states.

Three candle waxes publish a ceiling, and two of them — Chunks and CSI 468 — put 8–10% comfortably inside it. CSI 464 is the one to watch. A recipe at 10% in CSI 464 has no margin for a heavy-handed pour, a scale that reads a gram high, or a helper who uses the wax-weight method. If you like CSI 464's price (₹93.36 of wax in a 200g candle against ₹110.22 for Chunks), design your recipes at 8–9% and keep them there. Paraffin, beeswax and gel wax pages at CSI state no load either.

The mistake: reading "up to 10%" as "10% is normal". A stated maximum is the edge of what the wax is made to hold, not a recommended setting. Pour at the ceiling and the variations every real batch contains — temperature, stirring time, a gram of spill-over — push some candles past it, and those are the ones that sweat or burn poorly. Fragrance oils with evidence at the 8% end

The cheapest percentage point is the one you never needed. Some oils have buyers already telling you that.

CSI does not publish load recommendations per fragrance oil, and this guide will not invent them. What exists is a written record from buyers. Where a published review describes an oil as strong, concentrated or performing well in candles, that is a sensible reason to start it at 8% and make 10% prove itself. Where no such review exists, the oil is not weak — it is simply untested in public, and the same 8% start applies.

Three oils get a card, one for each position in the range. Each card counts 100g candles at 9% (9g of oil each) per bottle, the midpoint of the range; halve the count for 200g candles.

British Rose Fragrance Oil
The only CSI review that speaks directly to load. The buyer, describing five years of searching for a candle fragrance, reports "strong fragrance in cold throw and hot throw" and says you "can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell". That is one maker's experience in their own wax, not a CSI specification — but it is exactly the evidence that justifies holding an oil at 8%. At 8% it is also the cheapest per-candle oil in the evidence table after Citrus Lemon, and 8% instead of 10% saves ₹12.27 a candle, ₹1,227.20 per 100.

That makes Lavender the ideal oil to run the 8%-versus-10% comparison below: good evidence of performance, no evidence of the load behind it, and the most expensive step-up of the three cards at ₹20.88 per 200g candle. If 8% passes, that is ₹2,088.40 saved on every hundred candles.

Citrus blends are built on light, volatile top notes, which is why, as a general principle, citrus is the family most worth testing at the top of a load range — see why citrus fragrances fade. Its one review ("Quality is good with good fragrance") says nothing about strength, so test it rather than assume. Conveniently, it is the cheapest oil to push: the whole 8% → 10% step costs ₹11.33 per 200g candle, and at ₹2,832/kg it is the lowest 1 kg price among CSI's in-stock candle oils.

8% vs 10%: what the step costs per candle and per hundred

Every step from 8% to 10% swaps 4g of wax for 4g of oil in a 200g candle. Oil costs far more per gram than wax, so the step is almost pure added cost. The table shows it for ten CSI oils at 1 kg pricing, with the small wax saving netted off for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (4g × ₹0.599 = ₹2.40).

Working: +4g oil = 4 × price per gram (Lavender 4 × ₹5.221 = ₹20.88); net = that minus ₹2.40 of Chunks wax (₹20.88 − ₹2.40 = ₹18.49, from unrounded figures); per 100 candles = 400g × price per gram. The last column is the practical one: 100 candles at 10% need 2 kg of oil; at 8%, 1.6 kg. For a single scent that is the difference between two 1 kg bottles and one 1 kg bottle plus a 500g and a 100g — a real cash-flow difference before a single candle sells.

Now set that against what 10% might return. More oil does not automatically make a candle smell stronger. A load that the wax, wick and cure cannot release properly gives you more oil in the jar and not more scent in the room — the reasoning is in why your candle still smells weak at 10%. So the ₹11–₹31 per candle is a bet, and bets should be tested before they are placed on a hundred candles.

The CSI principle
Fragrance load is a cost line before it is a scent line.
Every recipe should start at the load you can prove, not the load you can afford. The two points between 8% and 10% are worth ₹1,132.80 to ₹3,058.40 per hundred candles — buy them only when a cured candle makes the case in the room, not on the recipe card.

Deciding between 8%, 9% and 10%: the side-by-side

The decision needs three candles, not thirty, as long as everything except the load is held still. Use your production jar, your production wick and the wax you actually sell in.

Write the three recipes in grams before meltingFor a 200g candle: 184g wax + 16g oil (8%), 182g + 18g (9%), 180g + 20g (10%). If your wax is CSI 464, replace the 10% candle with a second 8% one — 10% is its stated ceiling, and you want margin, not a test of the limit.

Weigh each candle's wax and oil separatelyThree small pitchers, three oil weighings. Never pour one batch at 8% and "top up" part of it to 10% — the top-up will not mix to the same standard and you will be testing your stirring, not your load.

Add and pour at your wax's stated temperaturesFor Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, fragrance in at 80–90°C and pour at 70–80°C; for Eco Soy CSI 400, add at 85°C and stir two minutes; for CSI 468, pour at 58–60°C. Blind-burn them in the same room, one at a timeHave someone else number the candles so you don't know which is which. Burn each for up to three hours on separate days in the same closed room, and score throw at 30 and 120 minutes. Check for a wet or oily surface and for soot — both can be signs that the load is too high for that wax and wick.

Keep the lowest load you cannot beatIf 10% is clearly stronger and clean, use it. If 9% ties with 10%, use 9% and save half the step cost. If you cannot reliably tell 8% from 10% blind, 8% is your recipe — and on Lavender you have just saved ₹20.88 a candle. The controlled burn test guide has a score sheet you can reuse.
The mistake: raising the load to fix a wick or cure problem. If the 8% candle tunnels, the pool never reaches the glass, or it was lit on day 5, a 10% candle made the same way will usually disappoint in the same way — just more expensively. Fix the wick size and the cure first, then run the load comparison. Weighing a production batch at 8%, 9% or 10%

At the bench, you usually know how much wax is in the melter, not how many finished grams you are making. The formula that turns a wax weight into an oil weight on the finished-candle basis is oil = wax × load ÷ (100 − load). Here it is for common melt sizes, with Lavender and British Rose costed so you can see the batch-level difference.

Working: 5,000g wax at 9% → 5,000 × 9 ÷ 91 = 494.51g; the finished batch is 5,494.51g, which is 27 candles of 200g with a little over. Costs are oil grams × price per gram, calculated from unrounded grams (5 kg melt, Lavender at 10%: 5,000 × 10 ÷ 90 × ₹5.221 = ₹2,900.56). What does an 8–10% fragrance load mean?
It means fragrance oil makes up 8–10% of the candle's weight. On the finished-candle basis used by CSI, a 200g candle holds 16–20g of oil and 180–184g of wax. Some makers instead add 8–10% of the wax weight in oil, which gives slightly less oil — 10% of 180g of wax is 18g, which is 9.09% of the finished candle. Neither is wrong; choose one, write it on your recipe card, and never mix them. Most scented container candles are made somewhere in this range.
How many grams of fragrance oil go in a 200g candle at 10%?
20g of oil and 180g of wax. At 9% it is 18g and 182g; at 8%, 16g and 184g. For other sizes, multiply the finished weight by the load: a 150g jar at 10% takes 15g, a 100g candle 10g, a 70g votive 7g. If you are working from wax weight instead, use oil = wax × 10 ÷ 90 — so 180g of wax needs 20g of oil for a true 10%. Always weigh; fragrance oils differ in density, so millilitres are not grams.
Is 10% fragrance load too much for soy wax?
It depends on the wax's stated limit. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended, so 10% is normal there. CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 10% is its ceiling — work at 8–9%. Eco Soy CSI 400 and Natural Soy Pearl Wax state no load, so start at 8%. Too much oil for the wax tends to sweat or separate rather than smell stronger.
Does a 10% load smell stronger than 8%?
Not necessarily. A higher load can help a light or citrus oil, but only if the wax holds it and the wick and cure let it release. Many candles judged weak at 8% are under-cured or under-wicked, and the same candle at 10% disappoints in the same way for ₹11–₹31 more per 200g candle. A British Rose buyer even reports "amazing smell" at "the minimum percentage". Pour 8%, 9% and 10% side by side, cure 14 days, blind-burn, and keep the lowest load you cannot beat.
How many candles does 1 kg of fragrance oil make at 8–10%?
For 200g candles: 62 at 8%, 55 at 9% and 50 at 10%. For 150g jars: 83, 74 and 66. For 100g candles: 125, 111 and 100. The formula is 1,000g ÷ oil per candle, rounded down. Because a kilo of oil runs out 12 candles sooner at 10% than at 8% in the 200g size, the load you choose changes how often you reorder — plan bottle counts from your proven load, not your hoped-for one.
Which fragrance oils work well at 8%?
CSI does not publish per-oil load recommendations, but buyer reviews point to good starting candidates. British Rose (₹3,068/kg) has a review saying the minimum percentage "will give amazing smell"; Gardenia is described as "highly concentrated"; Roasted Coffee as "quite strong"; Woody Oud as having "strong performance in candles"; Orchard Pear as "absolutely overwhelming". Start those at 8% — 16g per 200g candle — and move up only if a cured side-by-side test shows a clear gain.
