Wax, Wick or Fragrance Oil — What Is Causing Weak Hot Throw?

How do I know if the wick is the problem? Measure the pool at 3 hours. Short of the wall, or far shallower than the commonly used 6–12 mm, points to the wick: a 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is only about 51% of the surface. Confirm with a three-jar ladder of Eco Candle Wicks C1 (₹5.90) and C2 (₹9.44).
How do I tell if the fragrance oil is to blame? Pour your oil, a proven reference oil, and your oil again, with identical wax, wick and load. If the reference scores 2+ points higher out of 9 on two burns, it is the oil.
How long should a soy candle cure before I judge hot throw? Judge throw at day 14. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; pool and wick readings can start on day 3.
The five suspects behind weak hot throw — and why two of them hide
Hot throw comes almost entirely off the liquid melt pool. How much escapes depends on how wide the pool is, how hot it runs, how readily fragrance leaves the molten wax, and how long the candle has had to fill the room; whether you notice depends on the room and the nose. Every cause of weak hot throw works through one of those levers.
The wick sets pool width and heat. The fragrance oil sets volatility and strength per gram. The wax sets how much oil it holds without seeping (its stated ceiling) and, in general practice, how willingly it releases fragrance once molten — soy is widely described as more reluctant than paraffin (why the same fragrance smells weaker in soy). The hidden two: the process (add temperature, stirring, weighing, cure) decides whether the oil is bound in at the intended dose, and the test (cure age, burn length, room, airflow, a tired nose) decides whether a “weak” reading means anything.
So this page tests in a fixed order: cheapest and fastest to rule out first, slowest and most confounded last. It is not a ranking of how often each suspect is guilty — nobody has honest numbers on that, and we will not invent them.

The symptom matrix: read the candle before you change anything
Burn one candle from the problem batch, cured at least 14 days, for three hours. At 1, 2 and 3 hours note pool diameter and depth, the flame, the wick tip, and whether you smell it at arm’s length and from mid-room; before lighting, note whether the surface is dry or beaded with oil. The closest row tells you which test to run first — not the verdict.

Strong in the jar but weak when lit is common enough to have its own cold-versus-lit explainer. The row that misleads most is the first: a narrow pool tempts you to add oil.
Step zero: make the burn test worth trusting
Start with cure, the suspect that fixes itself. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. Some CSI oil pages quote less — Eucalyptus Spearmint says 48–72 hours. Both can be true: a candle can be lit fairly at 72 hours while soy throw keeps developing for another week or more. Before you change a formula on a score, judge throw at day 14, where standard soy practice of 14–21 days by fragrance family begins (cure time by fragrance family).
Then the room. A 10 × 12 ft Indian bedroom has about 11.1 m² of floor; a 12 × 18 ft living room about 20.1 m² — roughly 1.8 times the air for one candle to scent. A ceiling fan carries scent away and makes the flame lean, which changes pool heat; a high AC does something similar. Monsoon-shut windows in Mumbai or all-day AC in a Nagpur summer are fine if every jar gets the same set-up — with no agarbatti, diffuser or kitchen tadka in the last hour.
Four one-variable isolation tests
Every test uses the series unit: 200 g of wax + 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured, in the jar you actually sell. With CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg, British Rose Fragrance Oil at 1 kg pricing (₹3.07/g) and an Eco C1 wick, one test candle is ₹101.48 + ₹49.09 + ₹5.90 = ₹156.47 before the jar; three jars are ₹469.40. Smaller jar? Scale both: 150 g of wax takes 12 g of oil at 8%.

Test A — the wick ladder
Only the wick changes. For typical gifting jars, CSI’s pre-tabbed Eco Candle Wicks come as Thin C1 (₹5.90) and Thick C2 (₹9.44); a Performance Wooden Wick (₹59.00 each from the pack of 10) makes a third rung, but it is a different wick type, so read it as its own branch. For jars over 8 cm wide, the Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made page says they are made for candles exceeding 8 cm (₹12.00 each). CSI does not publish wick sizes by jar diameter, so the ladder finds yours; the wick guide by diameter gives starting points. The round costs ₹526.04.
The winner is not the loudest jar. It is the smallest wick that reaches the wall by about 3 hours at roughly 6–12 mm depth (a commonly used guide), with a steady flame and no soot. A wick that scores a point higher with a 15 mm pool and a flicker is heat covering an unanswered question. If even the clean winner scores low, the wick is cleared.
Test B — the oil swap
Jar 1 your oil, jar 2 a reference oil, jar 3 your oil again. A reference is an oil that has already thrown well for you in soy, or one with a record you can check. British Rose lists a 192°C flashpoint and 0% vanillin on its page, and a customer review at the top of this page (not recorded as a verified purchase) describes strong cold and hot throw even at the minimum percentage; its 50 gm pack at ₹212.40 holds exactly three 16 g doses. Lavender, whose verified buyer calls its hot throw “also very good”, is another. With the C2 wick the round costs ₹480.02.
Jar 3 is the one most makers skip, and the most useful: if your own two jars differ by 2+ points, your process is not repeatable and no oil verdict counts until Test C settles it. Keep the load inside both limits — where a wax ceiling and an oil page’s range differ, the lower governs, and 8% sits inside CSI 464’s 10% and the common 6–10% on CSI oil pages. Test C — the split melt
Melt 600 g of wax once and divide it into three 200 g pitchers. C1, the control: 16 g of oil at 85°C — inside the 80–90°C window on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page — stirred slowly for 2 full minutes, as that page instructs. C2: your usual method, exactly — say, oil in at 65°C with a quick stir. C3: the control method, with oil measured your usual way (millilitres, drops) instead of grams. Each differs from the control by one thing.
A Mini Electric Wax Melter reviewer describes what this test catches: her wax temperature “would drop within seconds” and she was “not getting a good hot throw”. One unverified account — but small pitchers cool fast in an air-conditioned Chennai workroom or a Delhi December, so measure with a Pen Thermometer (₹354.00), not a timer. Note that Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 gives a 50–53°C melting point and 58–60°C pour on its page and publishes no add temperature, so do not carry an 85°C soy habit across; ask on WhatsApp.
Test D — the wax swap, last
This is the least pure test: each wax runs at its own published temperatures and may pool differently with the same wick, so you are testing “wax plus its correct process”. Use Test B’s proven oil, Test A’s winning wick, and a load at or below the lowest ceiling in the line-up — with CSI 464 (up to 10%) beside Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 (both up to 13%), that means 8% or 10%, never 12%. If a wax runs a clearly narrower pool on day 3, give it a two-wick mini ladder before scoring throw, or you will blame the wax for a wick mismatch.
Wax per jar is ₹101.48 for CSI 464, ₹119.80 for the Chunks and ₹130.00 for CSI 468 at 1 kg pricing; one 500 g trial pack of each (₹260.00, ₹299.00, ₹325.00) totals ₹884.00. If they tie within a point, keep the cheaper grade. Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes no fragrance ceiling — ask on WhatsApp before pushing it; Soy Pillar Wax is sold for pillars, not jars. Vybar (page: 0.5–1% for soy; 2 g costs ₹6.24) is its own single-variable test, not a cure for wick or process faults (does Vybar improve hot throw).
The scoring sheet: turn “smells weak” into numbers
The sheet has two halves. Measured: pool diameter at 1, 2 and 3 hours with a steel ruler beside the jar, and depth at 3 hours — dip a clean bamboo stick beside the wick to the solid wax and measure the wet line — plus flags S (soot), M (mushroomed wick), F (flicker). Judged: throw scored 0–3 at the same checkpoints, a maximum of 9 per burn. This is CSI’s worksheet design, not an industry standard.

Decision rules. A gap of 2 or more points out of 9, repeated on a second burn, is real. A gap of 0–1 is a tie — and a tie is an answer: the variable you changed is not what holds your throw back. If a blind scorer disagrees with you by 2 or more on the same jar, repeat that burn before deciding.

B beats A by 3 points, and A’s 58 mm pool covers 26.42 of a possible 38.48 cm² — about 69% — so C1 is too small for this jar, pending the second burn. C scores one more than B, which is a tie, and gets there with a 15 mm pool and a flicker. B wins: the smallest wick that does the job cleanly. If 5 out of 9 is not enough for the product, the wick is cleared and Test B runs with C2.

The last row deserves a second look. Against a mass-market paraffin candle every soy test can tie low, because soy is generally slower to release fragrance at the same load — benchmark against your own best soy candle. And a single-wick 7 cm jar scoring 5 in an 11.1 m² bedroom may simply be the wrong product for a 20.1 m² living room: a range decision, not a formula fault (complete weak-throw diagnosis guide).
What guessing costs next to testing
A maker plans 50 Diwali candles at ₹156.47 each in wax, oil and wick — ₹7,823.40 before jars. The last batch smelled weak, so the guess is to change everything: CSI 464 to Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (+₹18.32), C1 to C2 (+₹3.54), 8% to 10% British Rose (+₹12.27). That is ₹34.13 more per candle, about 21.8% on top, and ₹1,706.60 on this batch. Nobody knows which change mattered, so all three are paid for on every batch after.

Even the full sequence, ₹2,012.96, is about 13 candles’ worth — under a quarter of one batch — paid once for a line you may sell for years. And there is no bulk saving to wait for on wicks: a C2 is ₹9.44 each in the 20-pack (₹188.80) or the 100-pack (₹944.00).
Timing matters too. For Diwali on 8 November 2026, candles poured by 15 October finish a 14–21 day cure between 29 October and 5 November, leaving days for courier transit. A round started this weekend gives a verdict by 26 September and a confirmation by 11 October — just enough. One verified wick buyer above rates the Eco wicks good for jar candles but asks CSI to improve pricing and delivery timelines; we do not quote delivery times, so order test materials together this week.
Three Indian workshop cases, run through the tree
Case 1 — Pune, 150 g gifting jars: “strong in the box, nothing when lit”
A home maker pours 150 g of CSI 464 with Lavender Fragrance Oil at 12% (18 g) and an Eco C1 wick in a jar about 6.3 cm across inside. Cold throw is excellent, oil beads appear by day 10, and at 3 hours the pool is 45 mm. Step zero passes. Question 2 fails: 15.90 cm² of a possible 31.17 cm², about 51% of the surface. The matrix also flags the load — 12% is above both CSI 464’s stated 10% and the Lavender page’s 6–10% for candles, and the lower figure governs.
Two single-variable rounds follow. The load drops to 9% (13.5 g) and the beading stops. A wick ladder at 9% then shows, illustratively, C2 at 6 out of 9 against C1 at 2, with a full pool and no flags. The money moves the right way: at Lavender’s 1 kg price of ₹5,221.00, oil per candle falls from ₹93.98 to ₹70.48, saving ₹23.49; the C2 wick adds ₹3.54; net saving ₹19.95 a candle — on a candle that finally throws.
Case 2 — Kochi, monsoon: “my new oil is weak”
An Instagram seller scores a new fruity oil in the living room, fan on, windows open: 2 out of 9 — yet sample customers say it fills their bedrooms. Step zero fails three ways: big room, airflow, a nose that poured that oil all afternoon. Re-scored in a closed bedroom by a family member, it scores 5; an oil swap against the seller’s bestseller comes back 5 against 6, a tie. The oil was fine, and nearly got dropped.
Case 3 — Ahmedabad, 40°C summer: “the whole range got weaker”
A small brand cures its April pour lids-off in a top-floor room above 40°C through May; by June every scent seems weaker. Pools are unchanged. Fresh jars of two oils in the same wax and wick score 6 and 7 at day 14 against 3 and 4 for old stock, so oil, wax and process are cleared. Storage is not: uncapped candles in sustained heat lose their most volatile notes before anyone lights them. A lid-on versus lid-off pair confirms it; the fix is lids and a cooler shelf, not a pricier wax.
