CSI Troubleshooting · Weak Hot Throw
Before you buy one more "stronger" oil, find out whether your candle can throw anything. Seven oils across six families, one control, one blank, one pour: here is the panel, what it costs and how to read it.
₹842.30
the seven-oil panel basket: a 50 g control plus six 15 g family oils · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which fragrance oils should I test when my soy candles have weak hot throw? A panel, not a single oil: one control plus one oil from each of six families (citrus-herbal, white floral, fruity, spicy, woody-resinous, gourmand), poured beside your suspect oil and an unscented blank in the same wax, wick and jar. Our panel: Eucalyptus Spearmint (control), Verbena, Gardenia, Fresh Strawberries, Cinnamon, Palo Santo and Roasted Coconut.

What does the panel tell me? Whether your system can throw at all. If everything is weak, including the control, no oil will fix it. If the panel throws and your oil does not, the oil is the problem. If only the heavy row throws, your candle favours base-heavy scents.

What does it cost? Oil basket ₹842.30 (control 50 g, six oils at 15 g). With wax, jars and wicks for nine candles, ₹2,381.28. The all-50 g basket is ₹1,856.52.

How long does it take? One pour, a pool check from day 3, blind rounds starting at day 7 and day 14. With nine jars at two sessions a day, about 18 days to a verdict.
The short answer
The panel: nine candles from one melt at 8%: your oil, a control, an unscented blank and six family oils, light to heavy.
The question it answers: can your wax, wick, jar, process and room throw anything? Only then is any single oil worth judging.
The cost: ₹842.30 in oil; ₹2,381.28 for the whole panel including wax, jars and wicks (₹264.59 per candle).
What to buy next: nothing if the control fails; a 50 g of the family that threw if yours did not; see the reading table.
The weak-throw test panel: nine jars, one melt Same wax, wick, jar, 8% load, pour day and room. Only the oil changes. Rows run from reference to light to heavy. Family weights read from page notes: judgement, not measurement. CSI live pricing, verified 25 September 2026.
The test panel as a tray. Jar A is the oil you suspect, B the control, C an unscented blank that tells you what the wick does without any oil. Rows two and three run from light, top-led oils to heavy, base-led ones, so the result shows not only whether your candle throws but which kind of oil it throws best.
Straight answer
When my soy candles have weak hot throw, which fragrance oils should I test?
Test a panel that can tell you whether your candle can throw at all, before you test any single "stronger" oil. Ours is seven CSI oils: Eucalyptus Spearmint as the control (50 g, ₹212.40), plus 15 g each of Verbena (citrus-herbal), Gardenia (white floral), Fresh Strawberries (fruity), Cinnamon (spicy), Palo Santo (woody-resinous) and Roasted Coconut (gourmand). Pour them at 8% beside your suspect oil and an unscented blank, all from one melt, in your own wax, wick and jar; cure; check the pools on day 3; score blind at day 7 and 14. If the control and the panel are weak too, stop buying oil: fix the wick, wax, process or room. If the panel throws and your oil does not, replace your oil with a 50 g from the family that did best. The oil basket is ₹842.30; the full nine-candle panel, including wax, jars and wicks, is ₹2,381.28.
One line: test whether your candle can throw before you test whether an oil can.
The panel basket: ₹842.30. Eucalyptus Spearmint 50 g ₹212.40 plus 15 g each of Verbena ₹106.20, Gardenia ₹105.02, Fresh Strawberries ₹113.28, Cinnamon ₹106.20, Palo Santo ₹106.20 and Roasted Coconut ₹93.00. All in stock on 25 September 2026.

Why a panel, not one more oil

One new oil can only tell you about one new oil. Seven can tell you about your candle.

A maker with weak soy candles usually does the natural thing: buys a different oil, pours it the same way, and finds it weak too. Then another. Each purchase answers the wrong question, "is this oil strong?", when the real question is "can my candle throw anything?" A panel answers that in one pour. If a control and six oils from six families all come out weak in the same wax, wick and jar, the problem is almost certainly not in any bottle. If most of them throw and yours does not, the problem is almost certainly in yours.

The panel does a second job. Families behave differently in a hot pool: in our judgement, light top-led oils such as citrus and herbal accords tend to fade faster once lit, while oils with woody, resinous or vanilla bases tend to persist. A panel that runs from light to heavy shows you where your candle sits on that scale. That matters for what you buy next, and it is something no single-oil test can show you.

One more oil vs a panel · what each can tell you
The panel costs more once and saves the chain of hopeful purchases
Approach New oil cash If it is weak, you learn If it throws, you learn
One replacement oil, 50 g ₹212.40 to ₹330.40 (panel oils' 50 g range) Almost nothing: that oil, or your candle, or both That oil works; not why your first one did not
A control beside your oil (the method in How Do I Know If My Fragrance Oil Is Too Weak for Candle Making?) ₹212.40 (Eucalyptus Spearmint 50 g) Your system is weak, or your oil is Your system can throw one scent
The seven-oil panel ₹842.30 Your system is weak across families: stop buying oil Which families your system throws, and whether yours is the outlier
Argued against our own interest: this page asks you to buy seven oils, and you might expect us to follow it with "now buy the winner by the kilogram". We will not. If the panel says the whole system is weak, the right purchase is none of these oils: it is a wick pack, a thermometer or two more weeks of cure. Buying a kilogram of Palo Santo on hope costs ₹6,018.00, 7.1 times this whole basket, and would smell just as weak in the same candle.

The seven oils and why each is there

Each jar has a job. If you swap an oil, keep the job.

The panel was built to a specification, not to a bestseller list; CSI has no sales ranking or throw data we would use for this. Every oil's page states a soy load that reaches 8% (all "up to 10%" except Fresh Strawberries, "6-9%", which still includes 8%), six of the seven pages state a soy cure, all seven are in stock at 15 g and 50 g on 25 September 2026, and together they cover six families from light to heavy. The weights are our reading of each page's stated notes.

The panel · page wording quoted, 25 September 2026
Jar, family, the job it does, and what the page states
Jar Oil Family · weight (judgement) Job in the panel Stated candle load Stated cure
B Eucalyptus Spearmint herbal-aromatic · light Control: a fixed, recognisable reference "up to 10% for soy wax" 48-72 hours
D Verbena citrus-herbal · light The light end: first to fade if the pool is weak "Up to 10% for soy wax" 48–72 hours
E Gardenia white floral · soft A family often called "weak" "Up to 10% for soy wax candles" 48-72 hours
F Fresh Strawberries fruity · mid-weight, vanilla-sugar base Sweet middle of the scale "6-9% for candles" not stated in text we hold
G Cinnamon spicy · warm Spice: often reads loud; checks room effects "Up to 10% for soy wax" 48–72 hours
H Palo Santo woody-resinous · heavy Heavy base; tests wick and pool with a dense oil "Up to 10% for soy wax" 48–72 hours
I Roasted Coconut coconut gourmand · heavy, sweet Heavy sweet base; the gourmand reading "candles (up to 10%)" 48-72 hours

Jar A is your suspect oil, at the same 8%, which is the point of the whole exercise. Jar C is unscented: 150 g of the same wax with the same wick. It will not smell of anything, and it is not meant to. It shows you the pool your wick makes with no oil in it, so if the heavy jars pool noticeably smaller than C, you are looking at a wick that struggles with dense oils rather than oils that fail.

Swapping an oil. If you sell a family we have not covered, swap within the job: a fresh aquatic for the light end, a rose for the soft floral, an oud for the heavy woody. Keep the rule that the page states a soy load that reaches 8% within your wax's ceiling. CSI 464 states up to 10%; CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, but an oil page's lower maximum still governs. The ranked buy shortlist for soy, which is a different exercise from this diagnostic panel, is in Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy for Strong Hot Throw in Soy Candles?.

15 g or 50 g: sample sizes and basket totals

A 15 g bottle is a one-candle question. A 50 g bottle is a question you can ask twice.

At 8%, a 150 g candle takes 12 g of oil. A 15 g bottle pours one panel candle with 3 g spare; a 50 g bottle pours four. For a first diagnostic screen, one candle per family is enough, because you are looking for a pattern across seven oils, not a verdict on one. The control is different: it should appear in every round you ever run, so buy it at 50 g.

Panel baskets · CSI live pricing, 25 September 2026
Oil cost of the panel at each sample size, and the small-size premium per gram
Oil 15 g 50 g 15 g premium per gram over 50 g In the 15 g basket as
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹68.44 ₹212.40 7.4% 50 g (control)
Verbena ₹106.20 ₹330.40 7.1% 15 g
Gardenia ₹105.02 ₹223.02 57.0% 15 g
Fresh Strawberries ₹113.28 ₹212.40 77.8% 15 g
Cinnamon ₹106.20 ₹330.40 7.1% 15 g
Palo Santo ₹106.20 ₹300.90 17.6% 15 g
Roasted Coconut ₹93.00 ₹247.00 25.5% 15 g
Basket ₹629.90 (six family oils) ₹1,856.52 (all seven) ₹842.30

The small-size premium ranges from 7.1% (Verbena and Cinnamon) to 77.8% (Fresh Strawberries). That is the price of asking seven questions cheaply. If you already know you sell florals or gourmands, buy those two at 50 g and the rest at 15 g; the spare 38 g lets you run a repeat or a load step on the families that matter to you. The all-50 g basket, ₹1,856.52, suits a maker who plans to repeat the whole panel.

The full nine-candle panel · everything valued at CSI prices
₹2,381.28 with the 15 g basket, ₹3,395.50 with the 50 g basket
Item Used Cost
Oil basket (control 50 g + six at 15 g) 7 × 12 g, plus your own 12 g in jar A ₹842.30
Wax, CSI 464 at the 10 kg price (₹0.51/g) 1254 g (8 × 138 g + 150 g blank) ₹636.28
150 g clear jars (₹94.40 each) 9 ₹849.60
Eco C1 wicks (₹5.90 each), or your proven size 9 ₹53.10
Total 9 candles ₹2,381.28 (₹264.59 per candle)

Wax, jars and wicks are valued whether or not you own them; wash and reuse test jars and the real cash is the oil basket. Figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. If you weigh by spoon, add the Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00): nine candles at 12 g each are only comparable if every 12 g is 12 g.

Pouring and scoring the panel

Nine candles, one variable. Every shortcut adds a second variable.

Use your own wax, jar and wick, because the question is about your candle. If you have not yet settled the wick for this jar, the blank and the heavy row will tell you a lot, but a proper wick bracket comes first; see the post on changing wick, process, oil or wax. For the full isolation of oil, wax, wick and process with control candles for each, see How to Test Whether Weak Hot Throw Comes From the Oil, Wax, Wick or Process. This panel isolates one thing: the oil.

1
Before pouring: fix the roomChoose one closed room, note its floor area, and plan to keep the fan and AC off during scoring. Every jar will be judged there. Label nine bases A to I.
2
Day 0 — one melt, nine jarsMelt 1254 g of wax. Pour 150 g unscented into jar C first. Then for each of A, B and D to I, weigh 138 g of wax into a jug, add 12 g of oil at your wax page's temperature, stir for the same time, pour. Same wick, centred, in every jar.
3
Day 3 — pool check, not scentAfter the 48–72 hour cure most of these pages state, burn each for up to 3 to 4 hours, one or two a day, and log pool width and depth hourly. Compare every jar's pool with blank C. No scent scores yet.
4
Day 7 to 11 — first blind roundA helper brings in one jar per session, lit for an hour before you enter. Score at the doorway at 30, 60 and 120 minutes, 1 to 5. Two sessions a day, room fully aired between them. Nine jars take about five days.
5
Day 14 to 18 — verdict roundRepeat the blind round in a different order; at two sessions a day it ends around day 18. Many makers judge soy at day 3, 7 and 14; that is practice, not a rule, but compare every jar at the same age.
6
Read the pattern, not the winnerAverage the day-14 scores by row: reference (A, B), light to mid (D, E, F), warm to heavy (G, H, I). Match the pattern to the reading table below before deciding what, if anything, to buy.
A score sheet that fits on one page
Jar · oil · family · pour date · age on test day · pool width at hours 1, 2, 3, 4 · pool depth at hour 3 · soot yes/no · doorway score at 30, 60, 120 minutes · who scored · room area. Nine rows. Keep it: it is the most useful document in your workshop.

Reading the panel: five patterns

The panel does not name a winner. It tells you where the problem lives.

This is the "is it actually the fragrance oil?" test, run seven times at once. Match your day-14 result to a row, and read the purchase column before buying anything.

Five panel patterns · tendencies, not certainties
What each pattern means, and what (if anything) to buy
Pattern at day 14 What it points to What to buy
Everything weak, control included; pools at or near the glass The system: wax, process or room. No oil will fix this candle. No oil. Check add temperature, cure and the room; consider a wax trial later (see Should I Change Soy Wax If My Fragrance Oil Has Weak Hot Throw?)
Everything weak; heavy jars pool smaller than blank C The wick: it cannot carry dense oils in this jar No oil. A wick step: Eco C2 pack of 10 ₹94.40
Control and most families throw; your jar A is weak Your oil, in this system at 8% A 50 g of the panel family nearest your scent that threw; test it against the control
Heavy row throws; light row and control weak A system that favours base-heavy scents For fresh and citrus lines, anchored oils or a higher load inside the ceiling (see What Type of Fragrance Oil Gives Strong Hot Throw at 6–8%?)
Everything throws, including jar A Your earlier weak candle was young, under-wicked, mis-weighed or judged in another room Nothing. Pour your oil the way you poured the panel
Mistake: reading the panel as a beauty contest and ordering 1 kg of the highest-scoring jar. Fix: the panel is a diagnosis. The highest score tells you what your candle can do, not what your customers want. Order 50 g of the family that fits your range, run it beside the control once more, and only then buy big.

Scores within a point of each other are a draw. One nose is a sample of one; ask a second person who has not been near the workshop. And if two families disagree between day 7 and day 14, trust day 14: soy commonly needs time before hot throw is judged fairly.

The panel oils, card by card

Seven cards in jar order. Chosen on stated soy load reaching 8%, stated cure where given, family coverage from light to heavy, and stock at 15 g and 50 g on 25 September 2026. Nothing here is ranked on throw: CSI has no measured throw data, and the panel exists precisely so your candle can supply it. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

1
herbal-aromatic · jar B · the control
Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
The fixed reference of the panel, and the only oil we suggest at 50 g. The page states "Recommended fragrance load up to 10% for soy wax, up to 6% for paraffin", a cure of "48-72 hours for soy wax", and "No vanillin - zero risk of discoloration" (the page's claim). "Moderate to strong throw" is its wording, not a CSI measurement. We use it because it is distinctive in a blind test, documented on its page, and the least expensive panel oil per gram at 15 g (level with Fresh Strawberries at 50 g). Buying 50 g leaves 38 g after jar B, enough to anchor three more rounds. Limitation: bright and top-led with no named base, so it is a yardstick for "can this candle throw at all", not for base-heavy scents.

citrus-herbal · jar D · the light end
Verbena Fragrance Oil
The panel's light, top-led oil: "Crisp lemony verbena with herbal undertones". The page states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax", a soy cure of "48–72 hours", "Vanillin Content: 0% (No discoloration risk)" and a wick note: "Cotton, Eco wicks or wooden wicks for steady, even burn. Test wick size based on container diameter." If jar D is the weakest of the panel while the heavy row throws, that is a structure pattern, not a broken candle. Limitation: its 15 g is only 7.1% dearer per gram than its 50 g, but the 50 g is ₹330.40, one of the two dearest 50 g sizes in the panel.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%

white floral · jar E · the soft middle
Gardenia Fragrance Oil
In our experience florals are among the families makers most often call "weak", so the panel needs one. The page describes "Rich, creamy, and velvety - a true-to-life gardenia bloom", states "Up to 10% for soy wax candles" with a "48-72 hours" cure, "Vanillin content 0.2% - minimal discoloration risk" and "Moderate to strong throw" (page wording). The page also calls it "IFRA-certified"; documents are on request on WhatsApp. Limitation: its 15 g is 57.0% dearer per gram than its 50 g, the steepest small-size premium in this panel after Fresh Strawberries, so if you already sell florals, buy the 50 g and use the spare for a repeat.

fruity · jar F · sweet, mid-weight
Fresh Strawberries
A fruity oil with a stated base: "ripe strawberry and citrus zest top notes, sweet rose and honeydew melon middle notes, and vanilla sugar and creamy sandalwood base". The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-9% for candles", so the panel's 8% sits inside its range; 10% would not. The text we hold states no cure time or vanillin content, so give it the panel's schedule and watch the colour of a vanilla-sugar base in pale wax. Two published reviews on this page are positive about the scent; that is not throw data. Limitation: the 15 g carries a 77.8% per-gram premium over the 50 g (₹212.40), the steepest in the panel.

spicy · jar G · warm spice
Cinnamon Fragrance Oil
The warm-spice member: "Warm, spicy, and earthy with a hint of sweetness". The page states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax", a soy cure of "48–72 hours", "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)" and describes "its strong throw and rich scent profile" (the page's claim). Wick note: "Test wick size based on container dimensions and wax type." Limitation: spice oils can read loud in a small room and flatter in a large one; score it in the same room as everything else. The 500 g and 1 kg are ₹5.90 and ₹5.31 per gram.

woody-resinous · jar H · base-heavy
Palo Santo Fragrance Oil
The heavy row's woody member: "Earthy palo santo with soft citrus, warm amber, and a touch of incense". The page states "Recommended Fragrance Load: Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax", a soy cure of "48–72 hours", "Vanillin Content: 0% (No risk of discoloration)" and "Eco wicks or wooden wicks for an even, clean burn. Wick testing is recommended based on your container and wax type." From 50 g it is priced flat at ₹6.02 per gram, so the 1 kg saves nothing per gram. Limitation: heavier oils often need a wick check; if jar H has a smaller pool than the blank, that is the wick talking, not the oil.

coconut gourmand · jar I · base-heavy, sweet
Roasted Coconut Fragrance Oil
The gourmand of the panel and its lowest-cost 15 g (₹93.00). The page describes "toasted coconut and coconut milk top notes, caramelised sugar and praline heart, and vanilla bean, tonka and sandalwood base", states "candles (up to 10%)" and "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing"; "Strong throw" is the page's wording. No 500 g is listed: sizes jump from 100 g to 1 kg. Limitation: vanilla and tonka notes often come with materials such as vanillin that commonly cause colour drift in white wax; the page states no vanillin figure in the text we hold.

When the right purchase is part of the panel, not all of it: if you already own an oil that throws well in this wax and jar, it can be your control, and you save ₹212.40. If you already sell a family, you may own its panel member. Buy only the jars you cannot fill from your own shelf.

After the panel: the next purchase

The panel ends in one of three purchases: none, a wick or process fix, or a 50 g of a family that threw. Only the third leads to oil, and even then to 50 g first. A realistic second round, repeating two winning families at 50 g with a fresh wick pack, costs about ₹719.80 at the dearer 50 g price in the panel. The ranked buy list for soy hot throw is in Which Fragrance Oils Should I Buy for Strong Hot Throw in Soy Candles?; if the panel showed your candle favours heavy oils and you want lower loads, What Type of Fragrance Oil Gives Strong Hot Throw at 6–8%? lists the oils whose pages state a 6% or 7% floor.

Timing: Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 44 days after these prices were checked. A panel poured by 29 September finishes its day-14 round around 17 October. That leaves time for a cured production batch with an oil you already hold and trust, but not for a proper 50 g confirmation of a new family before Diwali. If your panel says "system", fix it first; a production run before Diwali in a candle that cannot throw helps nobody. Confirm dispatch time on WhatsApp.

After the panel, before bulk: once a family has thrown twice beside the control, ask for 500 g or 1 kg with GST invoice and a dispatch date. For Diwali 8 November 2026, a new family is only realistic if you already hold its 50 g result; for Christmas 25 December 2026 and later, take the time.

The CSI principle
Ask the candle before you ask the oil.
Seven oils across six families in one pour tell you whether your wax, wick, jar and room can throw at all. Only after that does any single oil deserve a verdict, or your money.
"If seven oils are weak in your candle, the eighth will be too."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells all seven panel oils and does not sell finished candles. This page asks you to spend ₹842.30 on small bottles, and tells you that one likely result is buying no oil at all. A diagnosis that sometimes ends in "not our oil" is the only kind worth publishing.

Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and any that is not would be flagged as out of stock. Loads, cures, notes, vanillin statements and throw wording are quoted from product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.

The panel's composition, the family weights, the five patterns and the scoring routine are editorial judgement; CSI has no measured throw data for any oil. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What fragrance oils should I test for weak hot throw in soy candles?
A panel across families rather than one "strong" oil: a control (we use Eucalyptus Spearmint) plus a citrus-herbal, white floral, fruity, spicy, woody-resinous and gourmand oil, all poured at 8% beside your suspect oil and an unscented blank. Oil basket ₹842.30.
How do I know if my soy wax can throw fragrance at all?
Pour several oils from different families, including a control, in the same wax, wick and jar, cure them and score them blind at day 14. If all of them are weak with full melt pools, the wax, process or room is the problem, not the oils.
Is a 15 g fragrance sample enough to test hot throw?
For one 150 g candle at 8%, yes: it uses 12 g and leaves 3 g. That is enough for a diagnostic panel. For a repeat or a load step, buy 50 g, which pours four 8% candles; buy the control at 50 g so it can anchor later rounds.
Which fragrance families have the best hot throw in soy wax?
There is no fixed ranking. In our judgement, oils with woody, resinous or vanilla bases tend to persist in a hot pool, while light citrus and herbal tops tend to fade faster. Your panel shows how the families behave in your candle.
Why do all my fragrance oils have weak hot throw?
When every oil is weak, the common factor is the candle: a wick too small for the jar, a candle judged before day 7 or 14, a load not weighed, the wrong add temperature, or a large, draughty test room. Check those before buying another oil.
What is an unscented blank candle used for in testing?
It shows the melt pool your wick makes in that jar and wax with no oil. If scented candles, especially heavy ones, pool noticeably smaller than the blank, the wick is struggling with the oil and needs a step up before any oil is judged.

Wax ceilings and oil loads are as stated on the pages (formulation limits, not regulatory limits). Family weights are read from each page's stated notes and are judgement. The panel composition, scoring routine, 1-point draw rule, five patterns and the dated timing are editorial judgement or illustration.
