Yes — and not only because the new oil smells different. A fragrance oil is a liquid fuel dissolved in your wax, and swapping it changes how much of that fuel the wax holds, how fast the wick can draw it, how big the melt pool grows and what colour the candle is in three weeks. This guide separates what carries over from what has to be re-tested, and costs the re-test.

Quick answers — read this first
Does changing the fragrance oil really change the burn? Yes. The oil is 6–13% of the candle by weight, depending on which page you are following, and it is combustible liquid drawn up the wick along with the wax. A different oil means a different viscosity, a different share of volatile top notes, a different stated ceiling and often a different colour — so the melt pool, the pool time and the flame all move.

What has to be re-tested? Wick size, pool time, flame height, colour over three weeks, and throw at day 14. Those five. Everything else — wax, jar, add temperature, pour temperature, cure schedule — carries over unchanged if you genuinely changed only the oil.

How different can two oils be on paper? Very. Japanese Cherry Blossom states 6–13% for candles; Jasmine Fragrance Oil states up to 10% for soy and up to 6% for paraffin; Pink Crush states 8–10% in soy wax; and Gardenia tells you to add it below 98°C because its stated flash point is 98°C.

What does re-testing cost? A five-jar swap test on 120 g jars comes to ₹1,184.45 of materials — about 1% of a 500-candle production run at 150 g, which is ₹1,20,530 of materials on the same recipe.
The short answer
Treat a fragrance change as a formula change, not a shopping change. The candle that comes out is a new product even though nothing about the jar, the wax or the wick order has moved.
Read the new oil's stated ceiling before you weigh anything. The old oil's load is not automatically available to the new one — and where the two pages disagree, the lower number wins, as does your wax page's own ceiling.
Always pour a control of the old oil in the same batch. Without it you cannot tell whether a change in the burn came from the oil or from the day, the room or the wick spool.

Straight answer
If I keep my wax, wick and jar the same and only change the fragrance oil, will the candle burn differently?
Yes, and the reason is structural rather than sensory. At an 8% load a 200g candle is 184 g of wax and 16 g of fragrance oil — the oil is about a twelfth of what the wick has to lift, and closer to an eighth at the 13% some pages allow, and it is a different liquid from the wax with its own viscosity and its own volatility. Change it and four things move at once. The available load moves, because each page states its own figure: Japanese Cherry Blossom states 6–13% for candles, Jasmine Fragrance Oil up to 10% in soy and 6% in paraffin, Pink Crush 8–10% in soy, Lavender Fragrance Oil 6–10%. The wick's work moves, because a heavier or more viscous oil changes how quickly a pool forms and how far it reaches. The colour moves, because some pages warn of browning and others publish "Vanillin content 0%". And your process may move: Gardenia states a flash point of 98°C and instructs makers to "add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C", which is a different pour routine from the 80–90°C your wax page asks for. What does not change is the wax, the jar, the cure schedule or your method. So the honest rule is: re-test the five things in the right-hand column above, keep everything else, and always pour a control jar of the old oil in the same batch. What the oil is actually doing in the flame

A candle does not burn wax. It burns whatever the wick manages to lift and vaporise — and about a twelfth of that, by weight, is your fragrance.

The picture most makers carry is that wax is the fuel and fragrance is a passenger. It is a useful simplification for planning and a misleading one for troubleshooting. A lit candle works as a small pump: heat from the flame melts a shallow pool, capillary action draws that liquid up the wick, the heat at the top of the wick vaporises it, and the vapour burns. Everything in the pool goes up the wick together. At 8% load, 16 g of every 200 g candle is fragrance oil, and at the 13% ceiling some pages publish it is 26 g. The wick is lifting a mixture, and you changed the mixture.

Fragrance oils differ from each other in ways that matter to that pump. They differ in viscosity, which affects how readily the wick draws them. They differ in solubility in soy wax, which is why a load that sits happily in one oil sweats or separates in another. They differ in how much of their mass is volatile top-note material that leaves the pool early versus heavy base material that stays; the same 16 g can behave like more or less fuel depending on that split. And they differ in what they do to the wax's structure as it sets, which shows up as frosting, wet spots or a soft top rather than in the flame.

None of that is exotic chemistry and none of it needs measuring. It is simply the reason a change that looks like swapping one label for another produces a candle that reaches a full pool in ninety minutes instead of a hundred and fifty, or mushrooms at the ninety-minute mark when the old one never did. The mechanism also explains why the fix is almost never the load: it is usually the wick, because the wick is the component you sized for the old mixture.

Where flash point does and does not come in
A flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air under defined test conditions. It is a handling and classification figure. It is not the temperature at which fragrance "burns off" in a candle, it is not a quality score, and it is not a load limit. It matters to a swap in exactly one way: if the new oil's page states a low value, your process may need to change. Gardenia's page states 98°C and asks for the oil to go in below that; Jasmine's states 185°C, far above any candle-making temperature. Across CSI's 107 fragrance pages only 18 publish a measured value; 32 carry only the line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based products and not a measurement; 56 state nothing. What carries over and what does not

This is the table that saves you money, because most makers re-test either nothing or everything. Neither is right. If the only thing you changed is the fragrance oil, the left-hand column of your recipe is still valid and you should not spend a single jar re-proving it.

The mistake: keeping the old wick because "it is the same wax". It is the same wax, and that is exactly why makers skip this. But the wick was chosen to reach the glass in about two to three hours in a mixture that no longer exists. A swap that leaves the wick alone produces one of two silent failures: a pool that never reaches the glass (tunnelling, and a customer who thinks the candle is faulty) or a pool that overheats (a tall flame, soot on the rim, mushrooming). Both are fixed for the price of ten wicks — ₹59 for ten C1 or ₹188.80 for twenty C2. The evidence is on the pages: loads differ oil by oil

You do not have to take the mechanism on trust, because the suppliers' own pages already publish the consequence. If fragrance oils were interchangeable at a fixed percentage, every page would state the same number. They do not. Below are stated candle loads, quoted verbatim, from in-stock CSI oils — and the spread across them is the reason a swap changes the arithmetic of your candle before it changes anything else.

Worked out above: load as a share of the finished candle — 200 g at 6% = 188 g wax + 12 g oil; at 8% = 184 g + 16 g; at 10% = 180 g + 20 g; at 13% = 174 g + 26 g. The 14 g hero figure is 26 g − 12 g, a 117% increase in the oil the same jar holds. Where a page words its figure "of total wax weight" — Lavender Fragrance Oil does — the base is the wax rather than the finished candle, so record which base you used. Loads are formulation limits published by the supplier, not regulatory limits, and the wax page's own ceiling applies on top: CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 8–13% with 10% recommended, CSI 468 up to 13%, Eco Soy CSI 400 none stated.

Notice what the right-hand columns mean in practice. Swapping an oil whose page allows 13% for one that allows 8% does not just cap your options — it changes the wax fraction of the candle from 174 g to 184 g. That is 10 g more wax and 10 g less oil in an identical jar. The candle is denser in wax, the pool holds a different mixture, and the wick that suited the first candle is now sized for a fuel blend that no longer exists. The percentage on the batch card looks like a small edit. The jar is a different product.

Why the wick is the thing that breaks first

Every symptom of a bad fragrance swap looks like a wick problem, because by the time you can see it, it is one.

A wick has one job: keep a melt pool of roughly the vessel's diameter, no deeper than it needs to be, without overheating. Pool area grows with the square of the radius, so diameter dominates everything. A vessel with a stated 6 cm diameter — the Amber Shiny Glass Jar states 120 gm capacity and 6 cm — asks the wick to hold a pool of about 28 cm². At 8 cm that becomes about 50 cm², nearly 1.8 times the area, for the same flame.

This is why the wick, not the load, is the first dial to touch after a swap. CSI lists Eco Candle Wicks in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each, which means testing one step up and one step down costs about ₹15.34 per jar. The CSI principle
A fragrance swap is the cheapest change to make and the most expensive one to assume.
The bottle costs a few hundred rupees and arrives in a week. The consequence — a pool that stalls, a flame that soots, a white candle that goes cream in a customer's window — arrives after you have poured the batch, printed the labels and taken the order. Five jars is the entire price of finding out first.

The five-jar swap test, costed

This is a re-test, not a full qualification: everything except the oil and the wick is held fixed, and two of the five jars are a control poured with the oil you are replacing. Total materials, using Japanese Cherry Blossom as the incoming oil and 120 g jars: ₹1,184.45, plus whatever remains of the old bottle you already own.

Decide against the control, not against memoryIf the new oil at your existing wick matches or beats the control on pool time and shows no soot, the swap is clean and only the scent description changes. If the pool is slower, move one wick size up and re-pour two jars, not five. If the two duplicate jars disagree with each other, your process is the variable — fix that before blaming either oil.
Don't run the swap test on a different jar "because you had one spare". Pool area scales with the square of the radius, so a 7 cm jar asks a wick for 36% more area than a 6 cm one. Test in the jar you sell in, on the wax you sell on, at the load you sell at. A swap test in the wrong vessel produces a confident answer to a question nobody asked — and the cost of that answer is the batch you pour on the strength of it. The cost comparison at the heart of that table is worth stating plainly. A five-jar swap test is ₹1,184.45. Five hundred 150 g candles built on the same recipe — 138 g of wax and 12 g of oil each, in a ₹94.40 jar with a ₹5.90 wick — come to ₹1,20,530 of materials at ₹241.06 a candle. The test is a hundredth of the run. Nobody insures a lorry by weighing the driver, but every maker who has reworked five hundred candles has done the arithmetic once and never skipped a swap test again.

The oil that shows a ceiling can depend on the wax as well as on the bottle: its page states "Up to 10% for soy wax" with a 48–72 hour cure and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" with 24–48 hours. Swap this oil into a paraffin candle at the soy percentage and you are outside its own guidance without having touched a dial. It also publishes a measured Flashpoint 185°C — one of only 18 such figures across CSI's fragrance range — and "Vanillin content 0%", so on a white candle it removes the colour question rather than adding one.

The oil that changes your process, not just your scent
Gardenia Fragrance Oil
The one page in this guide that asks you to pour differently. It states Flashpoint 98°C and spells out the consequence: "This is a lower flashpoint than many fragrance oils - ensure you add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C." Since the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C, the two instructions are compatible — but only if you know both before the melt. Stated notes describe it as "Rich, creamy, and velvety gardenia" and, usefully for anyone choosing between white florals, "Softer and creamier than jasmine, more velvety than rose". Stated loads: up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin, and "Vanillin content 0%".

What to write down so the next swap is cheap

The first swap costs ₹1,184.45 and a fortnight. The fifth should cost less, because by then you should know how your wax and your jar behave when the oil moves. That only happens if each test leaves behind a comparable record. Keep it to one line per jar, in the same order every time, so two tests six months apart can be read side by side.

The line needs the incoming oil and its bottle size, the load and the base it was calculated on, the wax and its pack, the add and pour temperatures actually read, the wick and its size, the jar and its stated diameter, the pour date, the burn date, minutes to a full pool, flame height, soot, and throw at 30 and 120 minutes. Then one more field that most makers omit and everyone needs: what the control jar did. A number with no control is an anecdote.

File the paperwork with the result, not separately
When you swap an oil, file three things together: your test line, the page text you relied on (stated load, cure, flash point, discolouration) as it read on the day, and the SDS or IFRA documentation you requested for that oil. Product pages change; your batch record should show what you were told at the time you poured. CSI supplies SDS and IFRA documentation on request via WhatsApp — ask once, when you buy the sample, and the file is ready before anyone asks you for it.

Frequently asked questions

If I keep the same wax and wick, can a new fragrance oil really change the burn?
Yes. At 8% the oil is 16 g of a 200g candle and it goes up the wick with the wax, so a different viscosity, a different share of volatile top notes and a different stated ceiling all change what the wick is lifting. In practice the visible effects are a different time to a full melt pool, a different flame height, and sometimes soot or mushrooming that was never there before. Keep the wax, jar and cure; re-test wick, pool, flame, colour and throw.
Can I use the same fragrance percentage for a different oil?
Only if both pages allow it. Stated candle loads differ oil by oil: 6–13% on Japanese Cherry Blossom, up to 10% in soy and 6% in paraffin on Jasmine and British Rose, 8–10% on Pink Crush, 7–10% on Mint Sandalwood, and nothing at all on some perfume-grade listings. Take the lower of the new oil's ceiling and your wax's ceiling, and for a swap test hold the percentage at your existing figure so the oil is the only variable.
How many test candles do I need for a fragrance swap?
Five, if you spend them properly: three with the new oil (two on your current wick, one on the next size) and two controls with the old oil on both wicks. In 120 g jars at 8% that is 552 g of wax, 48 g of oil and five wicks — ₹1,184.45 of materials with a 50 gm bottle of the incoming oil. The duplicate pair matters: if your two identical jars disagree, the variable is your process, not the oil.
Does a fragrance oil's flash point tell me anything about how it will burn?
No. A flash point is the lowest temperature at which vapours form an ignitable mixture with air under test conditions — a handling and classification figure, not a burn-off temperature or a quality score. It affects a swap only when a page states a low value and gives an instruction with it, as Gardenia does at 98°C: "ensure you add this oil to your wax at a temperature below 98°C". Jasmine's stated 185°C is far above any working temperature. Where no value is published, ask for the SDS figure.
My new oil tunnels in the same jar the old one was fine in. What is wrong?
Most often the wick, and the fix is one size up. The pool has to reach the glass — about 28 cm² in a 6 cm jar, 38 cm² at 7 cm — in roughly two to three hours, and a heavier mixture can stall short of it. Before you change anything else, re-pour two jars with the next wick size, keep the wax, jar, load and cure identical, and burn them beside the old-oil control. Only if a bigger wick soots or overheats should you look at reducing the load.
Do I have to re-test if the new oil is from the same supplier and the same family?
Yes. Family and supplier tell you about the scent, not about the pour. Two white florals from the same range can state different ceilings and different flash points — Jasmine states up to 10% in soy and 185°C, Gardenia states up to 10% and 98°C with a temperature instruction, and Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon states no candle load at all. A new bottle is a new formula. What it does not need is a re-test of your wax, jar or cure schedule.
