How Do I Audit a Candle’s Complete BOM to Identify the Raw-Material Changes That Could Reduce COGS Without Reducing Customer-Perceived Quality?
शेयर करना
What does the audit find without touching what the customer sees? A five-step change list worth ₹49.54 a candle (12.9%) if every test passes: cut rejects from 4% to 2% (₹6.04), test a 7% fragrance load (₹8.92), then a cheaper wax (₹26.23 after the load step), a cheaper shipper (₹5.58) and two stickers (₹1.30). The jar, label, retail box, tissue, wick and dye stay as they are.
Is CSI always the cheaper alternative? No. CSI has no cheaper jar for this candle (in-stock jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00), sells no printed labels or retail boxes, and its tissue and tape cost more per use than the worked example's. Our C2 wick costs ₹1.44 more than the reader's.
What is it worth? At 500 candles a month (worked example) the projected change list is ₹2,97,255.65 a year; the load, wax and drop tests cost ₹8,837.28 together and pay back in about 0.4 months.

Step 1: list every line, landed, per saleable candle
The title gives no figures, so this is a labelled worked example: a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil, 184 g wax), selling 500 a month, with every unit price from the reader's own suppliers (illustrative, not CSI prices, and not a claim that anyone is overpriced). "Landed" means what the material costs you delivered to your bench: if freight is charged separately, spread it over the units it brought (the full landed-cost method is the cost-per-gram worksheet). Two allowances turn "per poured candle" into "per saleable candle": rejects (4% of poured candles, worked example) and the test candles you pour each month (10 over 500, worked example).
| # | Line | Quantity | Unit price (reader's) | ₹ per candle | % of BOM | Customer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Soy wax | 184 g | ₹540.00/kg | ₹99.36 | 25.9% | Experiences (finish, burn) |
| 2 | Fragrance oil (500 g packs) | 16 g (8%) | ₹5,000.00/kg | ₹80.00 | 20.9% | Experiences (throw) |
| 3 | Liquid dye | 0.1 g | ₹12.00/g | ₹1.20 | 0.3% | Sees (colour) |
| 4 | Pre-tabbed wick | 1 | ₹8.00 | ₹8.00 | 2.1% | Experiences (flame) |
| 5 | Wick sticker | 1 | ₹3.00 | ₹3.00 | 0.8% | Never notices |
| 6 | Jar with lid | 1 | ₹85.00 | ₹85.00 | 22.2% | Sees first |
| 7 | Front label | 1 | ₹6.00 | ₹6.00 | 1.6% | Sees |
| 8 | Care/warning sticker | 1 | ₹1.50 | ₹1.50 | 0.4% | Sees (base) |
| 9 | Printed retail box | 1 | ₹42.00 | ₹42.00 | 10.9% | Unboxes |
| 10 | Tissue wrap | 1 wrap | ₹4.00 | ₹4.00 | 1.0% | Unboxes |
| 11 | Shipper carton | 1 | ₹28.00 | ₹28.00 | 7.3% | Receives |
| 12 | Void fill / bubble | 1 parcel | ₹6.00 | ₹6.00 | 1.6% | Receives |
| 13 | Tape | 0.5 m | ₹4.00/m | ₹2.00 | 0.5% | Receives |
| 14 | Rejects allowance | 4% of poured | in-candle cost ₹284.06 | ₹11.84 | 3.1% | Never notices |
| 15 | Test-candle allowance | 10 a month over 500 | in-candle cost ₹284.06 | ₹5.68 | 1.5% | Never notices |
| Complete BOM | per saleable candle | — | ₹383.58 | 100.0% (rounding: 100.1%) | — |
The six lines most people would write down (wax, oil, wick, jar, label, box) come to ₹320.36. The complete BOM is ₹383.58. The difference is not rounding: dye, two kinds of sticker, tissue, void fill, tape, rejects and test candles together are ₹35.22, 9.2% of the total. Rejects alone cost ₹11.84 a saleable candle, more than the wick, because a rejected candle wastes every in-candle line at once (₹284.06 of materials). How to count rejects, breakage and failed batches properly is the true manufacturing cost post; where scale-up losses hide is the hidden-losses post.
Step 2: flag what the customer perceives
Give every row one of three flags. Sees: the jar, lid, label, dye colour, retail box and tissue, things the customer judges before lighting the candle (₹139.70, 36.4% of this BOM). Experiences: wax, oil and wick, which the customer never sees but meets as throw, flame and burn (₹187.36, 48.8%). Never notices: the wick sticker, shipper, void fill, tape, rejects and test candles (₹56.52, 14.7%); the shipper and fill are seen at delivery, but only as protection.
The flags set the kind of test each change needs, not whether it is allowed. A "never notices" line needs a functional check (does the sticker hold, does the box survive a drop). An "experiences" line needs a controlled burn test, because throw and burn are exactly what a cheaper material can quietly change. A "sees" line needs buyers: put old and new in front of real customers before switching; the method is the jar-perception test.
Step 3: best alternative, gap, test and risk
For each line write the cheapest alternative you would actually test (a CSI item where CSI really is cheaper, a quote where it is not), the rupee gap per candle, the test it needs and the risk to the customer experience. These are the audit's answers on CSI's live prices:
| Line | Best alternative and gap | Customer | Test needed | Risk | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | ₹25.94 (Eco Soy CSI 400) or ₹6.00 (CSI 464) | Experiences | Full retest: wick bracket, throw, finish | High | 3 |
| Fragrance | ₹8.92 (load 8% → 7%) | Experiences | Blind throw test across burn life | Medium | 2 |
| Dye | ₹0.30 at a 0.1 g dose (worked example) | Sees | Colour match | Low | ignore |
| Wick | C1 is ₹2.10 less, C2 ₹1.44 more | Experiences | Burn decision only | High | keep |
| Wick sticker | ₹0.50 (CSI 40-sheet) | Never notices | Adhesion in hot wax | Low | 5 |
| Jar with lid | none: in-stock CSI jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00 | Sees first | Quotes + buyer test | High | keep |
| Front label | CSI sells none: quote elsewhere | Sees | Buyer test | High | keep |
| Care sticker | ₹0.80 (1.5 inch roll) or ₹0.67 (1 inch) | Sees (base) | Fit on base, legibility | Low | 5 |
| Retail box | CSI sells none: quote elsewhere | Unboxes | Buyer test | High | keep |
| Tissue | a full CSI sheet is ₹2.50 dearer; a quarter sheet would be ₹1.62 | Unboxes | Measure your wrap | Low | check |
| Shipper | ₹5.58 (11 x 11 x 8 cm) or ₹1.28 (7 x 5 x 4 inch) | Receives | Fit + drop test | Medium | 4 |
| Void fill | Air Bubble Roll length not stated: cannot cost | Receives | — | — | ask |
| Tape | CSI 200 m roll is ₹0.06 dearer per parcel | Receives | — | — | keep |
| Rejects | ₹6.04 (4% → 2%) | Never notices | Batch-sheet tracking | Low | 1 |
| Test allowance | the cost of doing tests: keep | Never notices | — | — | keep |
Three honest results stand out. CSI is not the answer for most visible lines. The in-stock CSI jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00, far above the reader's ₹85.00, and CSI sells no printed labels or retail boxes. CSI is dearer on some small lines. A full 50 x 75 cm tissue sheet is ₹6.50 against the reader's ₹4.00 wrap (cut it into quarters and it is ₹1.62: measure what you actually use), the 200 m paper tape works out at ₹2.06 for half a metre, and our C2 wick is ₹1.44 dearer than the reader's. The tape's variant says "50 meters" while its description says "75 meters long", and the Air Bubble Roll's length is not stated in the text we captured, so ask us before costing either. The real gaps are in wax, load, rejects and the shipper.
Step 4: the prioritised change list
The audit becomes a change list in five steps, ordered so the least risky changes go first and the formula changes go one at a time. Annual figures use the worked example's 500 candles a month.
| Step | Change | Type | Saving per candle | Per year | Proof needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cut rejects from 4% to 2% | process, no material change | ₹6.04 | ₹36,232.14 | batch sheet, reject log |
| 2 | Fragrance load 8% → 7% | formula (fragrance) | ₹8.92 | ₹53,520.00 | blind throw test, full life |
| 3 | Wax → Eco Soy CSI 400 (after step 2) | formula (wax) | ₹26.23 | ₹1,57,380.00 | wick bracket, throw, finish, full life |
| 4 | Shipper → Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm | packaging the buyer receives | ₹5.58 | ₹33,480.00 | fit check + drop test |
| 5 | Wick and care stickers from CSI | purchasing | ₹1.30 | ₹7,806.00 | adhesion, fit on base |
Step 3 is priced after step 2 on purpose. At 7% the candle carries 186 g of wax, so the wax gap is ₹26.23, not the ₹25.94 measured on 184 g; adding the two gaps measured separately would give ₹34.86 instead of the correct ₹35.15. Small, but the habit matters: overlapping savings counted twice are how cost-down plans miss their numbers. Rejects (step 1) are a process fix with no material change: tighter pour temperatures, wick centring, a reject log on the batch sheet. That is why they lead.
| Line | ₹ per candle | % of BOM |
|---|---|---|
| Wax | ₹74.21 (186 g Eco Soy) | 22.2% |
| Fragrance | ₹70.00 (14 g, 7%) | 21.0% |
| Dye | ₹1.20 | 0.4% |
| Wick | ₹8.00 | 2.4% |
| Wick sticker | ₹2.50 (CSI) | 0.7% |
| Jar with lid | ₹85.00 | 25.4% |
| Front label | ₹6.00 | 1.8% |
| Care sticker | ₹0.70 (CSI 1.5 inch) | 0.2% |
| Retail box | ₹42.00 | 12.6% |
| Tissue | ₹4.00 | 1.2% |
| Shipper | ₹22.42 (CSI) | 6.7% |
| Void fill | ₹6.00 | 1.8% |
| Tape | ₹2.00 | 0.6% |
| Rejects at 2% | ₹5.05 | 1.5% |
| Test allowance | ₹4.95 | 1.5% |
| Projected BOM | ₹334.03 | 100.0% |
The projection is ₹334.03, ₹49.54 (12.9%) below ₹383.58. That is ₹1.47 more than the five steps added up (₹48.07), because cheaper in-candle materials also shrink the rejects and test allowances: each rejected or test candle now wastes less. The jar, label, retail box, tissue and dye (₹138.20 of what the customer sees) are untouched; the only seen items that change are a care sticker on the base and the shipper at delivery, each after its own check. It is a projection: it becomes a fact only when each test passes and a month of production confirms it. Keeping the before-and-after BOM that proves it, with rejects and labour included, is the before-and-after BOM post; making the audit a monthly habit is the continuous cost-optimisation system.
Step 5: the test gate for each change
All tests together cost about ₹8,837.28 and, if every change passes, pay back in about 0.4 months at 500 candles a month. Which existing results you can keep when only the wax changes is the wax-supplier retest post; finding the lowest fragrance load that still throws is the lowest effective load post; recording each change is the change-control form.
The CSI items the audit points to
Five items the change list uses, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 4 October 2026. CSI publishes no throw or burn data, so nothing is ranked on performance. Per-candle wax figures use 184 g (200 g at 8%).

Skip for this candle: CSI tissue and paper tape (no cheaper per use on these numbers), the Air Bubble Roll until its length is confirmed, and our C1 or C2 wicks as a cost move.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the waxes, wicks, stickers and boxes named here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that we have no cheaper jar for this candle, sell no printed labels or retail boxes, are dearer on tissue and tape per use, and that our C2 wick costs more than the worked example's.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the 100-sticker wick sheet and the Corrugated 3 ply 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box are out of stock on that date and flagged where they appear; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent or contradictory in the text we captured (box inside or outside, tape length, bubble roll length), we say so.
Every reader unit price, the 0.1 g dye dose, the quarter-sheet tissue wrap, the 4% and 2% reject rates, 10 test candles and 500 sales a month, labour at ₹200.00, the ₹70.00 courier and the test sizes are labelled worked examples. Which changes pass is your test's answer. This is practical business judgement, not financial, tax or legal advice.
