I Increased My Fragrance Load From 6% to 8% to 10% but My Candle Is Still Weak — Should I Change the Fragrance Oil?
शेयर करना
What should I check next? Seven audit questions about how the ladder was run (same wick, same age, same room, weighed loads, within both ceilings, full pool, no sweating), then a four-candle "settling set": your oil and a control oil at 8% on the same wick, plus your 10% candle re-poured on the ladder's wick and one wick size up.
What does it cost? ₹306.80 for the settling set (an Eco C2 pack and British Rose 50 g). If the control wins, a replacement trial of two 50 g candidates adds ₹517.18; ₹823.98 for the whole plan, nine candles, verdict by 24 October 2026.
What if the control is weak too? Then do not change the oil. A second oil would fail in the same system. Fix the wick, wax or process.

What your 6/8/10 ladder proved, and what it could not
A load ladder changes one thing, the grams of oil, and holds everything else still. That is its strength and its limit. When every rung is weak, the only conclusion it supports is about the thing it varied: adding oil did not unlock the throw. Why more load often stops helping (ceilings, unbound oil, a pool that did not grow) is covered in the 8% to 10% case and the general theory in Why Doesn't Adding More Fragrance Oil Always Make a Candle Stronger?. This page is about what to do next, and whether "next" is a new bottle.
| Question | Did the ladder test it? | What you can conclude | What settles it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is more oil the fix? | Yes: three loads, one oil | No. Stop raising load. | Already settled |
| Is the wick big enough at 10%? | No, if one wick served all three | Unknown: a higher load often changes what the wick needs | Your 10% re-poured on C2 |
| Is the oil the weak link? | No: nothing to compare it with | Unknown | A control oil at 8% on the same wick |
| Was cure equal? | Only if all three were poured and scored on the same days | Unknown if poured a week apart | Same-day pours, scored at the same age |
| Is the room fair? | Only if all three burned in one closed room, blind | Unknown if scored in different rooms | One room, fan and AC off, doorway scores |
| Is 10% inside the ceilings? | Depends on the pages | If not, the top rung is invalid | Check the wax and oil pages |
Is it actually the fragrance oil?
Our rule for this situation: the oil is guilty only when a control oil, poured the same day at the same load on the same wick and scored blind at the same age in the same room, clearly out-throws it, and when the wick has been shown to give a full pool with your oil. If the control is weak too, the system is guilty, and the fix list is the one in the weak-hot-throw hub: melt pool, cure, load arithmetic, room. We link it rather than repeat it.
The ladder audit: seven questions before you trust it
Get your notes out. Answer each question honestly; a "no" does not mean you did it wrong, only that the ladder cannot carry the weight you are putting on it. Doing this costs nothing and takes about twenty minutes on Saturday 26 September.
| # | Question | If "no" |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Did all three rungs use the same wick, and did the 10% rung reach the glass by hour 4 with a pool about 0.5 to 1 cm deep (commonly cited rules of thumb)? | The 10% rung may have been wick-starved. The C2 re-pour in the settling set covers it. |
| 2 | Were all three poured on the same day, from the same wax melt? | Different melts can differ in temperature and stirring. Treat the ladder as indicative only. |
| 3 | Were all three scored at the same cure age, at least day 7? | A day-3 6% against a day-10 10% compares ages, not loads. The settling set is scored at one age. |
| 4 | Were the loads weighed on a scale, as a percentage of total candle weight (6% = 9 g, 8% = 12 g, 10% = 15 g in a 150 g candle)? | Spoons and millilitres can be well out, since oils differ in density; weigh on a scale (₹354.00). |
| 5 | Was 10% inside the lower of the wax page's and the oil page's stated maximum? | The top rung is invalid. CSI 464 states up to 10%; some oil pages state 9% (for example Fresh Strawberries, "6-9% for candles"). |
| 6 | Was every candle burned in the same closed room, fan and AC off, scored blind? | Room and nose differences can swamp a 2% load step. Fix the room before the settling set. |
| 7 | Was the 10% candle free of sweating or oily beads? | Sweating at 10% suggests the wax is not holding the oil; see the sweating-and-weak case before anything here. |
Reading the audit. Seven "yes" answers: the ladder is sound, and the settling set is the only step left before the verdict. A "no" on 1: the ladder has not yet tested the wick, which in our judgement is the likeliest single explanation for a weak 10% candle. A "no" on 2, 3 or 6: the ladder is noise; the settling set replaces it. A "no" on 5 or 7: go back to a load inside both ceilings before you judge anything, because an over-loaded candle is not a fair trial of any oil. A "no" on 4: redo the arithmetic; you may have been at 7% when you thought you were at 10%, or at 11%.
Week 1: the four-candle settling set
Order on Saturday 26 or Sunday 27 September: an Eco C2 pack (₹94.40) and British Rose 50 g (₹212.40), ₹306.80 together. If your ladder used a wick you no longer have and you want C1 on hand as well, add a C1 pack for ₹365.80 in all. Pour on Tuesday 29 September, or on the day the parcel arrives; slide every later date by the same gap.
| Candle | Oil and load | Wick | Wax | Pair and question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S1 | Your oil, 8% (12 g) | The ladder's wick | 138 g | S1 vs S2: is it the oil? |
| S2 | British Rose, 8% (12 g) | The ladder's wick | 138 g | S2 vs S1: can this system throw at all? |
| S3 | Your oil, 10% (15 g) | The ladder's wick | 135 g | S3 vs S4: a fresh copy of your top rung |
| S4 | Your oil, 10% (15 g) | Eco C2 (or one size above the ladder's) | 135 g | S4 vs S3: was the top rung wick-starved? |
Materials: 546 g of wax, four jars, four wicks, 42 g of your oil and 12 g of British Rose (38 g left in the bottle, enough for the week-3 control and two spares). Valued at CSI prices, the set consumes ₹743.38 excluding your oil: wax ₹277.04 (CSI 464 at the 10 kg price), jars ₹377.60 (the 150 g clear jar at ₹94.40 each from the pack of 10), wicks at worst case four C2, and the control's oil ₹50.98. S1 and S2 differ only by oil; S3 and S4 differ only by wick. No pair differs by two things. S1 and S3 also differ only by load, so together they double as a fresh two-point load check at one age, which your original ladder may not have been.
The decision gate on 6 October
One table, five rows. Find yours; it tells you whether to change the oil, and what to spend next.
| Row | What you see | Verdict | Next spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | S4 (10% on C2) reaches the glass and scores clearly above S3 (10% on the ladder's wick), which did not reach it | The wick, not the oil. Your ladder was wick-starved at the top. | Re-run 8% on C2 before settling a load; a C2 50 pack (₹472.00) for production |
| 2 | S1 and S2 both weak, both with a full pool | The system, not the oil. Do not buy oil. | Nothing on oil; look at wax and process (the isolation protocol) |
| 3 | S2 clearly out-throws S1, both with a full pool | The oil is the weak link in this system | Replacement trial: two 50 g candidates, ₹517.18 to ₹729.00 |
| 4 | S1 and S2 both fill the room | Nothing is wrong now. Your ladder was mis-run (see audit answers 2, 3, 6). | Nothing. Pour at 8% and stop at 8%. |
| 5 | S1 beats S2 | Unusual; suspect labels or a mix-up | Nothing until you have repeated the pair |
Rows 1, 2 and 4 all end with no new oil. In our judgement they account for more of these cases than row 3, though we have no statistics to prove that, and neither does anyone selling you a replacement. Row 4 has a quiet bonus: if your oil throws at 8%, every candle you pour from now on uses 3 g less oil than at 10%. With the worked-example oil at ₹5.00 per gram, that is ₹1,500.00 per 100 candles.
Weeks 2 to 4: the replacement-oil trial
Only row 3 brings you here. The aim is not to find an oil that is "strong" at 10%; you already know your system tolerates 10% without thanks. The aim is an oil that throws at 7% to 9% on the wick the settling set proved, so you never need the top rung again. Choose two candidates whose pages state a candle range that starts at 6% or 7%; we suggest pairing a bright one with a warm one so the trial also tells you which family your system favours.
| Candidate | Page's candle wording | Stated base notes | Trial loads | 50 g price | Oil used in trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bergamot Amber | "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours" | woody musk and smooth vanilla | 7% and 9% | ₹280.00 | 24 g, 26 g left |
| Apple Cinnamon | "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours" | vanilla and warm amber | 7% and 9% | ₹237.18 | 24 g, 26 g left |
| Coffee Vanilla Tobacco | "7-9% soy wax (strong throw at lower loads)" | tobacco leaf, amber, and soft musk | 7% and 9% | ₹449.00 | 24 g, 26 g left |
Trial loads of 7% and 9% sit inside every candidate's stated range and inside CSI 464's 10% ceiling. In a 150 g candle that is 10.5 g of oil and 139.5 g of wax at 7%, and 13.5 g and 136.5 g at 9%. Each candidate uses 24 g of its 50 g bottle, leaving enough for one repeat at the winning load.
| Candle | Oil | Load (oil / wax) | Question |
|---|---|---|---|
| R1 | Candidate A | 7% (10.5 g / 139.5 g) | Does A work at moderate load? |
| R2 | Candidate A | 9% (13.5 g / 136.5 g) | Does 2% more help A? If not, 7% is A's load. |
| R3 | Candidate B | 7% (10.5 g / 139.5 g) | Does B work at moderate load? |
| R4 | Candidate B | 9% (13.5 g / 136.5 g) | Does 2% more help B? |
| R5 | British Rose control | 8% (12 g / 138 g) | The yardstick, same age as R1 to R4 |
| Date | Action | Spend |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 6 October 2026 | Gate reads row 3. Order two candidate 50 g bottles. | ₹517.18 (Bergamot Amber + Apple Cinnamon), ₹686.18 or ₹729.00 with Coffee Vanilla Tobacco |
| Tue 13 October 2026 | Settling set at cure day 14 confirms row 3. Pour R1 to R5 if the parcel is in hand (else on arrival). | nothing new |
| Fri 16 October 2026 | Cure day 3: pool log for all five on the proven wick. A candidate that fails to reach the glass on it needs its own wick check before any throw score counts. | nothing |
| Tue 20 October 2026 | Cure day 7: blind scores. | nothing |
| Sat 24 October 2026 | Cure day 11: final blind scores and verdict. Buy 500 g of the winner at its winning load. | From ₹2,371.80 (Apple Cinnamon 500 g) |
The rule for picking the winner. A candidate wins if its 7% candle matches or beats the control and its own 9% adds little: that oil works at moderate load, which is what you came for. If a candidate only matches the control at 9%, it is usable but costs more per candle. If neither candidate reaches the control at 9%, stop buying samples: two failed replacements plus a strong control mean the gap is between those families and your system, and a wider panel is the next step (Best Fragrance Oils to Test When Your Soy Candles Have Weak Hot Throw). Materials across the whole trial, valued at CSI prices, come to ₹1,168.53 excluding your own oil (₹350.11 of wax, ₹472.00 of jars).
The money: stay at 10%, return to 8%, or replace
Every option has a running cost as well as a test cost. Worked example: your oil cost ₹5,000.00 per kg (₹5.00 per gram; an assumption for illustration, not a CSI product). Your ladder has already used 36 g of it, ₹180.00. That money is gone whatever you decide; do not let it vote. What matters is the cost of each candle you pour from here.
| Option | When it applies | Oil per candle | Oil per 100 candles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep your oil at 10% | Never, if the gate reads row 2, 3 or 4: it was weak at 10% | ₹75.00 | ₹7,500.00 |
| Your oil at 8% on the right wick | Rows 1 and 4 | ₹60.00 | ₹6,000.00 |
| Replace with Apple Cinnamon at 7% | Row 3, if it passes at 7% | ₹49.81 | ₹4,980.78 |
| Replace with Bergamot Amber at 7% | Row 3, if it passes at 7% | ₹57.09 | ₹5,708.85 |
| Replace with Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at 7% | Row 3, if it passes at 7% and the others do not | ₹90.29 | ₹9,028.95 |
| British Rose at 8% (the control itself) | Row 3, if a rose fits your range | ₹36.82 | ₹3,681.60 |
Three things stand out. First, on the right wick at 8%, your own oil (row 1 or 4) is cheaper per candle than it was at 10%, and it is already on your shelf. Second, a replacement is not automatically a saving: at the worked-example price, Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at 7% costs ₹90.29 per candle against ₹75.00 for your oil at 10%, even though its stated range is lower; at ₹116.09 per candle at 9%, it would be dearer again. Third, the control you bought as a yardstick can be the answer: if a rose suits your range, British Rose at 8% is ₹36.82 per candle at the 1 kg price. For wider per-candle comparisons of a better oil at lower load, see Can I Reduce Fragrance Load by Buying a Better-Performing Fragrance Oil?.
Set the whole plan, ₹823.98 with Bergamot Amber and Apple Cinnamon (up to ₹1,035.80 if Coffee Vanilla Tobacco replaces Apple Cinnamon), against buying a replacement kilogram on the strength of the ladder: Bergamot Amber's 1 kg alone is ₹5,437.00, 6.6 times the plan. Across all nine test candles, materials consumed come to ₹1,911.90, ₹212.43 per candle, excluding your own oil, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
What to buy, and when
One wick card for week 1, one control, and three candidates for week 3, of which you buy two, and only if the gate reads row 3. The oils are chosen on stated basis: a candle load range on the page that starts at 6% or 7% (the control states "up to 10% soy"), stated base notes, price per gram and stock at every size on 25 September 2026. None is ranked on throw; CSI has no measured throw data. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size in the pick cards is in stock on that date, and any that was not would be flagged in its row. Loads, cures, notes and throw wording are quoted from product pages and attributed to them; where a page is silent, we say so.
The audit questions, the gate table, the trial design and the candidate choices are editorial judgement; the ₹5.00-per-gram suspect oil is a worked example; CSI has no measured throw data for any oil. Non-price figures: the suspect oil at ₹5,000.00 per kg is a worked example, not a product. Candle maths assume a 150 g candle with load as a percentage of total weight (6% = 9 g, 7% = 10.5 g, 8% = 12 g, 9% = 13.5 g, 10% = 15 g); candle counts are floor(grams ÷ 12). Wax ceilings and temperatures are as stated on the wax pages (formulation limits, not regulatory limits). Loads, cures, notes and throw wording are quoted from oil pages and are the pages' claims. Melt-pool benchmarks are commonly cited rules of thumb; the audit, gate, trial design, dates and the judgement about which rows are more common are editorial.
