Business Economics · 100 to 1,000 Candles
Ten times the candles does not mean ten times the same order. Each stage from 100 to 1,000 a month changes which pack sizes make sense, how often you order, what you keep in reserve, and when a quote replaces the price list. It changes the per-candle price far less than most makers expect.
₹6.39
lower materials cost per candle at 1,000 a month than at 100, at listed prices (₹271.92 → ₹265.53) · almost all of it from moving proven scents to 500 g and 1 kg
Quick answers — read this first
How should purchasing change from 100 to 1,000 candles a month? At 100: test in 15 g, produce from 100 g, small wax packs, one order a month. At 250: 10 kg wax bags and kilos of your top scents. At 500: reorder points on every material, 1,000-packs of wicks, most scents at 500 g or 1 kg. At 1,000: written quotes for wax, jars and top oils beyond the listed packs.

Will my cost per candle fall as I grow? Less than you might think on listed prices. In the example it falls from ₹271.92 to ₹265.53 in materials — ₹6.39 — almost all from fragrance. Wax, Eco wicks and White Matte jars are priced flat per unit. Bigger savings need quotes, or changes you must test.

When do I need wholesale quotes? Around 1,000 candles a month for most materials: that is about 184 kg of wax, 1,000 jars and 1,000 wicks a month. CSI's listed wax stops at 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl at 50 kg). At What Monthly Candle Production Volume Should I Move from Retail-Sized Raw-Material Packs to Wholesale Purchasing? sets the threshold material by material.

How much cash does each stage tie up in materials? At about 1.5 months of stock (an example cover), roughly ₹40,787.83 at 100 candles, ₹1,00,549.26 at 250, ₹1,99,139.88 at 500 and ₹3,98,295.12 at 1,000.
The short answer
100 a month: Materials ₹27,191.89 a month. Oils in 100 g; wax 18.4 kg in 5 kg + 1 kg packs; one monthly order; 15 g testers for new scents.
250 and 500: 250: ₹67,032.84 a month, 2 scents at 1 kg, 10 kg wax bags. 500: ₹1,32,759.92, 6 scents at 500 g or 1 kg, reorder points on everything.
1,000 a month: ₹2,65,530.08 a month; 184 kg wax, 1,000 jars — quote territory. See I'm Making 1,000 Candles a Month — Which Raw Materials Should Now be Purchased Wholesale Rather than in Small Packs? for the 1,000-candle shopping list.

Straight answer
I'm growing from 100 to 1,000 candles a month — how should my raw-material purchasing strategy change at each stage?
Change how you buy at each stage, not only how much. At 100 a month, keep risk low: 15 g testers for new scents, 100 g bottles for production, wax in 5 kg and 1 kg packs, and one planned monthly order. At 250, move wax to 10 kg bags and put your two or three leading scents on 500 g or 1 kg — favouring oils with a real kilo break, such as Eucalyptus Spearmint (13.3%). At 500, set a reorder point on every material, buy wicks in 1,000s, and hold most scents at 500 g or 1 kg. At 1,000 — about 184 kg of wax, 1,000 jars and 16 kg of oil a month — the listed packs run out: ask for written quotes on wax, jars and your top oils, and consider a backup supplier for critical items. Be realistic about price: in the eight-scent example, materials per candle fall only from ₹271.92 to ₹265.53 across the whole journey, because wax, Eco wicks and the White Matte jar are priced flat per unit. Growth mainly buys stock security, fewer orders and access to quotes. Plan cash too: at an example 1.5 months of stock, materials tie up about ₹3,98,295.12 at 1,000 a month.
One line: each stage changes the buying system; the listed price per candle barely moves.
The scent that leads the example range, Eucalyptus Spearmint, is a good one to grow with: ₹68.44 for a 15 g tester, ₹3.54 a gram at 100 g, ₹3.30 at 500 g and ₹3.07 at 1 kg — 13.3% below the 100 g. Each stage of growth moves it one pack up and one step cheaper.

Four stages at a glance

A 100-candle business and a 1,000-candle business buy the same materials. They should not buy them the same way.

The example range has eight scents with an uneven split of sales — the leading scent 22% of candles, the smallest 6% — and one standard candle: 200 g at an 8% load in a White Matte Glass Jar with an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. The spec stays fixed across all four stages so that only the buying changes. Oils are bought in the pack each scent's monthly use justifies: 100 g below 350 g a month, the cheaper of 100 g and 500 g from 350 g, and the cheaper of 500 g and 1 kg from 700 g.

What each stage buys and spends in a month
Stage Wax a month Oil a month Scents on 500 g / 1 kg Monthly materials Per candle Oil per candle Stock at 1.5 months (example)
100 candles 18.4 kg 1.6 kg 1 / 0 ₹27,191.89 ₹271.92 ₹85.00 ₹40,787.83
250 candles 46.0 kg 4.0 kg 2 / 2 ₹67,032.84 ₹268.13 ₹81.22 ₹1,00,549.26

1,000 candles 184.0 kg 16.0 kg 4 / 4 ₹2,65,530.08 ₹265.53 ₹78.61 ₹3,98,295.12

The monthly bill scales almost exactly with volume, from ₹27,191.89 to ₹2,65,530.08. Per candle, it falls by ₹6.39 — about 2.3% — and every rupee of that comes from fragrance, as more scents cross into packs with lower per-gram rates. Wax is ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg (₹599.90 at 10 kg), Eco wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack from 10 to 1,000, and the White Matte Glass Jar is listed only as a pack of 5. That is the honest baseline: on listed prices, growing does not make a candle much cheaper. It makes buying easier, safer and — at the top — negotiable.

The CSI principle
Growth changes the buying system first and the unit price second.
At each stage, ask what should change about pack sizes, order rhythm, stock rules and suppliers. The price per candle follows only where a pack break or a written quote exists — so know where those are before you count on them.

How each scent's pack changes

Fragrance is where growth moves the price, so it deserves its own view. The table shows each scent's monthly use, the pack the rule selects, and its per-gram rate, at each stage.

Three details are worth noticing. Roasted Coconut has no 500 g listing, so it stays at 100 g until its use justifies the kilo — and then drops from ₹4.95 to ₹4.00 a gram, a 19.2% step. Forever Red's 500 g is fractionally dearer per gram than its 100 g (₹7.00 against ₹6.99), so the rule keeps it on 100 g at 250 a month. Gardenia and Wild Berries are flat across every size: growth changes their pack for convenience only, never their rate. Scent by scent, the per-gram benefit of growth depends entirely on which oils you sell. A 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Is Much Cheaper per Gram than 100 g — How Quickly Should I be Using a Fragrance Before Moving to the Larger Pack? covers how fast a scent should be selling before its kilo makes sense, and I Have 20 Fragrances but Only Five Are Bestsellers — Should I Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oils Only for Those Five and Keep Smaller Quantities of the Rest? how to split kilos across a range.

Keep testing small at every stage
The 15 g tester stays the right size for new scents even at 1,000 candles a month. It scents about one 200 g candle at 7.5% or three 50 g test pots, and costs from ₹68.44. Growth is the moment makers are most tempted to launch several scents at once in 500 g or 1 kg — and the moment dead stock does most damage.

Stage 1 — 100 a month

At 100 candles a month the business uses about 18.4 kg of wax, 1.6 kg of oil across eight scents, 100 wicks and 100 jars — ₹27,191.89 of materials. The priorities are learning which scents sell and not stranding cash. Buy wax as a 10 kg bag, a 5 kg bag and a few 1 kg packs (the rate is the same in each); Eco wicks as one 100-pack (₹590.00); jars in 5-packs as you need them. Seven of the eight scents sit on 100 g bottles at this volume. Only the leader, at about 352 g a month, justifies its 500 g, which is ₹3.30 a gram against ₹3.54 at 100 g. New scents enter as 15 g testers.

The one habit to build now is a single planned monthly order. At 100 candles, delivery charges and ordering time are a large share of each small order, and weekly top-ups are the most common hidden cost at this stage. I'm Paying Shipping Separately Every Time I Reorder Small Quantities — How Do I Calculate Whether Larger Raw-Material Orders Would Actually be Cheaper? works out the best order size with your own delivery charges, and I'm Ordering Wax, Wicks, Fragrance and Jars from the Same Supplier — Can Consolidating Orders Reduce My Actual Landed Raw-Material Cost? shows what combining wax, oils, wicks and jars into one parcel is worth.

The mistake that looks like ambition. Buying a kilo of every scent at 100 candles a month to "get the bulk price". Across eight scents that is well over ₹40,000 of oil for a business using 1.6 kg a month — five months of fragrance, and for two of the eight scents the kilo is not cheaper per gram at all. At this stage the 100 g is the right production size for seven of the eight scents.

Stages 2 and 3 — 250 and 500 a month

At 250 a month (₹67,032.84 of materials) the leading scents cross the thresholds: Eucalyptus Spearmint uses 880 g a month and Ylang Ylang Flower 720 g. Put them on 500 g or 1 kg, whichever is cheaper per gram — for both, the kilo carries a real break (13.3% and 10.0%). Wax moves to 10 kg bags: about 46 kg a month is four or five bags. Wicks move to 1,000-packs once you are sure of the wick size (₹5,900.00, the same ₹5.90 each). This is also the stage to secure wax before fragrance — Should I Buy Wax in Bulk Before Fragrance Oil Because Wax Is Used Across Every Candle While Individual Fragrances Sell at Different Rates? explains why.

At 500 a month (₹1,32,759.92) most scents are on 500 g or 1 kg, and the business runs on reorder points rather than memory. With 92 kg of wax, 8 kg of oil and 500 jars a month, running out of any one material stops production, and the bestseller will run out first if it is bought like the rest. Set a reorder level for each material and each leading scent — My Bestselling Fragrance Keeps Running Out — Should I Hold More Fragrance Oil Inventory than I Hold for Slower-Selling Candle Scents? sets one for a bestseller — and review stock weekly. Argued against our own interest, plainly. The obvious sales pitch to a growing maker is "now you can buy in bulk and save". On our listed catalogue, most of that saving is not there: wax, Eco wicks and the White Matte jar cost the same per unit at 1,000 candles as at 100. What growth buys you at these middle stages is fewer orders, fewer stock-outs and fewer rushed decisions. If you want a lower unit price as well, it comes from choices you must test — Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg, or a jar with a pack break — or from a quote at stage 4.

Stage 4 — 1,000 a month

At 1,000 candles a month you are buying 184 kg of wax, 16 kg of oil, 1,000 wicks and 1,000 jars every month. The price list was not written for that.

Materials now cost about ₹2,65,530.08 a month. CSI's listed wax packs stop at 10 kg, so 184 kg is nineteen 10 kg bags a month; 1,000 White Matte jars is 200 packs of 5. This is the point to ask for written quotes on the high-volume lines — wax, jars and your top two or three oils — with your monthly volumes and delivery rhythm. No volume discount figure is published, so treat any quote as something to test against the listed per-unit rates, not something to assume in advance. At What Monthly Candle Production Volume Should I Move from Retail-Sized Raw-Material Packs to Wholesale Purchasing? sets out the threshold, material by material, at which a quote becomes worth asking for.

Stage 4 is also where changes to the product spec start to pay, because every rupee per candle is ₹1,000 a month. Two examples from the listed catalogue, both needing tests before you commit: switching wax to Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg would save about ₹32.05 a candle on wax; moving to a jar with a pack break, such as the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar at ₹29.50 each from 50, would cost ₹41.30 less per jar — but it is a different jar, with its own fill weight to measure. Neither is a buying decision alone. My Candle Formula Is Profitable at 100 Units but Margins Change at 1,000 Units — How Should I Recalculate Raw-Material, Labour and Packaging Costs When Scaling? covers recalculating margins at scale.

Cash becomes the constraint. At an example 1.5 months of stock, materials tie up about ₹3,98,295.12 — ten times the stage-1 figure. Festive peaks multiply it: Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 43 days away, and a business at 1,000 a month may need two or three times its normal fragrance and jar stock for the season. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's growth story usually ends with "and your costs fall". On our listed prices they fall only a little — in this example about ₹6.39 a candle from 100 to 1,000 a month, all of it from fragrance — because our wax, Eco wicks and White Matte jars are priced flat per unit. This page says so, and puts the emphasis where growth really pays: rhythm, stock rules and quotes.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 and White Matte Glass Jar figures are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026; Natural Soy Pearl and Salsa jar figures are from CSI listings pulled 24–25 September 2026. Monthly bills, per-candle costs and per-gram rates are arithmetic on those prices.

The eight-scent sales split, the pack thresholds (350 g and 700 g a month), and the 1.5-month stock cover are working assumptions for illustration. Figures exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Frequently asked questions

How much raw material do I need for 1,000 candles a month?
For 200 g candles at an 8% load: 184 kg of wax, 16 kg of fragrance oil, 1,000 wicks and 1,000 jars, plus a 3–5% working allowance for pour loss and test burns. I'm Making 1,000 Candles a Month — Which Raw Materials Should Now be Purchased Wholesale Rather than in Small Packs? prices the full list.
Does candle cost per unit go down as production increases?
For materials at listed prices, only a little: in the example, from ₹271.92 to ₹265.53 per candle between 100 and 1,000 a month, all from fragrance. Larger falls need quotes beyond the listed packs or tested changes to wax or jar.
When should I start buying fragrance oil in 1 kg?
When a scent uses around 700 g a month or more, and only if the kilo is actually cheaper per gram — true for 24 oils by 5% or more, not for most. Check the 500 g too; for some oils it already carries the lower rate.
When should a candle business move to wholesale suppliers?
When monthly use of a material exceeds what the listed packs sensibly cover — for most makers, around 1,000 candles a month for wax and jars. At What Monthly Candle Production Volume Should I Move from Retail-Sized Raw-Material Packs to Wholesale Purchasing? sets the threshold material by material.
How much working capital do I need for raw materials when scaling?
Roughly monthly materials × months of stock you hold. At an example 1.5 months: about ₹1,00,549.26 at 250 candles a month, ₹1,99,139.88 at 500 and ₹3,98,295.12 at 1,000, before festive peaks. I Want to Grow from 500 to 2,000 Candles per Month — How Much Working Capital Will I Need Just for Raw-Material Inventory? goes further.
Should I keep testing fragrances in small sizes as I grow?
Yes. The 15 g tester (from ₹68.44) remains the cheapest way to try a scent at any scale. Move a scent to 100 g only when it has sold, and to 500 g or 1 kg when its monthly use justifies it.
