Your ₹45.00 box is 16.8% of a worked ₹267.41 COGS. If it only protects self-purchase orders, a plain shipper with tissue and tape does the job for ₹28.50; keep the printed box on the gift orders that pay for it.
₹16.50
worked saving per candle, plain shipper instead of a ₹45.00 printed box · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My box costs ₹45.00 and my jar ₹70.00. Is that too much packaging? It depends on the box's job. On a worked 200 g candle your box is 16.8% of a ₹267.41 COGS and 7.5% of a ₹599.00 price, 64.3% of what the jar costs. If the box only protects a self-purchase in transit, that is a lot: a plain corrugated shipper with tissue and tape does the job for ₹28.50, saving ₹16.50 a candle. If it is what gift and retail buyers pay for, it can earn its share.

What is the decision rule? Give each box a role. Shipping protection: cheapest box that passes test parcels. Retail presentation: a plain box plus a printed sticker (₹32.50). Gifting: keep the printed box, but only on gift orders and priced in. Then check the share again.

How much could I save? Worked at 500 candles a month: ₹8,250.00 a month with plain shippers everywhere (₹99,000.00 a year), ₹6,250.00 with a sticker, ₹5,775.00 if the printed box stays on 30% gift orders.

Can CSI supply the printed box? No. CSI sells plain corrugated shippers, tissue and tape, not printed retail boxes. If your brand needs a printed box, keep your printer.
The short answer
Share test: box ₹45.00 = 16.8% of COGS, 7.5% of price; jar plus box = 43.0% of COGS.
Rule: pay for presentation only where the buyer sees and values it; everywhere else, ship in the cheapest box that passes test parcels.
CSI route: Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm ₹22.42 + half a tissue sheet ₹3.25 + tape ₹2.83 = ₹28.50; packaging falls to 11.4% of COGS.
The gate: ten test parcels and an unboxing check before switching; this is a packaging change, not a formulation change, so no burn retest.
Where the box sits in the candle COGS per 200 g candle · hatched = outer packaging · label ₹5.00 not drawn wax fragrance wick jar packaging Today printed box ₹45.00 ₹267.41 packaging ₹45.00 = 16.8% of COGS A · plain shipper 11 x 11 x 8 cm + tissue + tape ₹250.91 packaging ₹28.50 = 11.4% of COGS B · shipper + sticker A + printed brand sticker ₹254.91 packaging ₹32.50 = 12.7% of COGS C · gift box on 30% printed on gifts, A on the rest ₹255.86 packaging ₹33.45 = 13.1% of COGS Saving per candle: A ₹16.50 · B ₹12.50 · C ₹11.55 · at 500 a month, A is ₹8,250.00 a month. Box ₹45.00 and jar ₹70.00 are the reader’s figures; sticker, tape length, gift share and volume are worked examples.
COGS per worked 200 g candle with your ₹70.00 jar, built up by component, with outer packaging hatched. Today's printed box is a sixth of the candle's material cost. A plain shipper with tissue and tape cuts the hatched block by more than a third; keeping the printed box only on gift orders sits in between.
Straight answer
My candle box costs ₹45.00 and the jar costs ₹70.00. Should premium outer packaging consume such a large share of product COGS?
Only if the box is doing a job the buyer pays for. On a worked 200 g candle at ₹599.00, your ₹45.00 box is 16.8% of a ₹267.41 COGS, three-quarters of what the fragrance costs, and 7.5% of the price. For an online candle bought for the buyer's own home, most of that is presentation nobody sees until the parcel is opened and then throws away; a plain corrugated shipper with tissue and paper tape protects it for ₹28.50 and saves ₹16.50 a candle, ₹8,250.00 a month at 500 candles. For a gift, a corporate order or a retail shelf, the printed box is part of the product and can justify its share, as long as the price carries it. So split by role: plain shipper for self-purchase, printed box on gift and retail orders only, and test ten parcels before you switch. CSI can supply the plain shipper, tissue and tape; we do not make printed boxes.
One line: a box that only ships should cost like a shipper; a box that sells should be on the orders it sells.
Trying a plain shipper? One 50-pack of the Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm (₹1,121.00) and a set of packing tissue (₹650.00) cover your test parcels and the first weeks of orders. The 100-pack costs the same per box, so start with 50.

The packaging share test

A box is the only part of the candle most customers throw away within a minute.

The title gives two of your numbers: a ₹45.00 box and a ₹70.00 jar. Those are your figures, not CSI prices, and say nothing about whether your printer or jar supplier is expensive. To see their weight we need the rest of the candle, so here is a worked 200 g candle at 8% (16 g of oil, 184 g of wax, load as a share of total weight) with CSI prices for wax, oil and wick. Roasted Coffee's page states "candles (6-10%)"; the Natural Soy Pearl Wax page states no load ceiling in the text we captured, so treat 8% as a starting point your own tests confirm.

Bill of materials · your ₹45.00 box and ₹70.00 jar in a worked 200 g candle
Box and jar: your figures (title) · wax, oil, wick: CSI live prices 4 October 2026 · label worked · % to one place, sums to 100.0% · excludes labour, freight, GST and marketing
Line Quantity Unit price ₹ per candle % of COGS
Wax: Natural Soy Pearl Wax 184 g ₹4,248.00 per 10 kg ₹78.16 29.2%
Fragrance: Roasted Coffee 16 g (8%) ₹3,738.00 per kg ₹59.81 22.4%
Wick: Eco C2 1 ₹94.40 per 10 ₹9.44 3.5%

Printed box (your figure) 1 ₹45.00 ₹45.00 16.8%
Label (worked) 1 ₹5.00 ₹5.00 1.9%
COGS ₹267.41 100.0%

Four ratios settle the question. Box ÷ COGS: 16.8%, a sixth of the candle and three-quarters of the fragrance line (22.4%). Box ÷ price: 7.5% of a worked ₹599.00. Box ÷ jar: 64.3%. Jar plus box ÷ COGS: 43.0%: over two-fifths of what you spend goes on the container and its wrapping, the parts that do not burn. The material ratio is 44.6%.

None of those is wrong on its own. A candle sold as a gift can carry a packaging share that would be indefensible on a candle someone buys for their own bedside. What matters is whether the share matches the job. As a working guide (business judgement, not an industry standard): a box whose only role is protection should cost what a shipper costs; a box that is part of what the buyer pays for can cost more, if the price says so.

Mistake: attacking the wax because it is "the main ingredient". Why it fails: the wax here is ₹78.16, 29.2% of COGS; even a wax 20% cheaper would save about ₹15.63 a candle, less than the box decision, and it changes the burn. Fix: look at the invisible and semi-visible lines first. The box is invisible to anyone who never sees it on a shelf, and changing it needs no burn retest. The order of attack across a whole candle is the order-of-attack hub.

Three roles, three boxes

Ask what the box does before you ask what it costs.

Outer packaging has three possible jobs, and many brands pay for all three on every order when only one is needed.

1. Shipping protection

Keep the jar intact and the wax surface clean from your bench to the buyer's door. What matters: a snug fit, cushioning top and bottom, enough void fill that the jar cannot move, and a seal. A printed finish adds nothing here. A plain corrugated shipper does this job; whether it does it well enough for your jar is what test parcels show. The protection methods themselves are the cut-packaging-without-more-breakage post.

2. Retail presentation

On a shop shelf or at a market stall, the box carries the brand, scent name, net weight and safety information, and stops the jar being handled. Here a printed box earns more, but a plain box with a well-designed printed sticker or band often does most of the job for a fraction of the cost. One standard box with scent-specific labels is the one-standard-box post.

3. Gifting

For gifts, corporate orders and weddings, the unboxing is part of the product. Buyers often expect a printed box, and gift prices are usually higher. This is where a ₹45.00 box is most likely to pay for itself, and where removing it is most likely to cost you sales.

Gift sets deserve their own line. A box holding two or three candles spreads one printed box across several jars, so its share per candle falls even if the box itself costs more; a single-candle gift carries the whole box. If you sell both, price the packaging per set, not per candle, and you may find the set is where a premium box makes most sense.

Count orders by role
Before you change anything, tag a month of orders: self-purchase online, gift online, retail or stall, corporate. If 70% are self-purchase online, most of your box spend is buying a role those buyers do not need. If most are gifts, the box is probably earning its keep and the money is elsewhere.

The options, priced

Three alternatives to a printed box on every order, using CSI's plain shipper, tissue and tape. The brand sticker, the 60 cm of tape per box and the 30% gift share are worked examples: use your own.

Outer packaging options per candle · worked
Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm ₹22.42 · half tissue sheet ₹3.25 · 60 cm tape ₹2.83 (worked) · sticker ₹4.00 (worked, your printer) · 30% gift orders (worked)
Option What ships Packaging per candle Saving per candle Packaging % of COGS Saving a month at 500
Today printed box ₹45.00 — 16.8% —
A · plain shipper corrugated box + tissue + tape ₹28.50 ₹16.50 11.4% ₹8,250.00
A with 7 x 5 x 4 inch box for taller jars, full tissue sheet ₹36.05 ₹8.95 — ₹4,475.00
B · shipper + brand sticker A + printed sticker ₹32.50 ₹12.50 12.7% ₹6,250.00
C · printed box on gifts only printed box on 30% of orders, A on the rest ₹33.45 average ₹11.55 13.1% ₹5,775.00

Option A takes packaging from 16.8% to 11.4% of COGS and the material ratio from 44.6% to 41.9%: ₹99,000.00 a year at 500 candles a month. Option B keeps a branded moment for ₹12.50 less than today. Option C keeps the printed box where it is most likely to matter and still saves ₹11.55 a candle on average. Here is option A's full bill so you can see the new balance:

Bill of materials · option A (plain shipper)
% to one place, sums to 100.1% by rounding · packaging line = box ₹22.42 + tissue ₹3.25 + tape ₹2.83
Line ₹ per candle % of COGS
Wax ₹78.16 31.2%
Fragrance ₹59.81 23.8%
Wick ₹9.44 3.8%
Jar (your figure) ₹70.00 27.9%
Outer packaging ₹28.50 11.4%
Label ₹5.00 2.0%
COGS ₹250.91 100.1%

The price route instead. If you keep the printed box everywhere, the price should carry it. The printed box costs ₹16.50 more than option A; after a worked 15% platform fee you would need about ₹19.41 more on the price for the box to pay its own way against a plain shipper. Buyers rarely pay ₹19.41 more for a box they discard, which is why the role split usually wins.

Mistake: picking the cheapest CSI box without checking fit. Why it fails: the 11 x 11 x 8 cm page does not say whether those are inside or outside dimensions; a 200 g jar with a lid that is 8 cm or taller will not close in it, and a loose jar in a big box breaks. Fix: measure your jar with its lid, ask us for inside dimensions on WhatsApp, and use the 7 x 5 x 4 inch box (₹26.72) with more void fill if the small box is tight. Even then the shipper build is ₹36.05, ₹8.95 under your printed box.

Where a premium box earns its keep

Some buyers pay for the box. Find them and charge them for it.

Gift and corporate orders. A printed box turns a candle into a present. On a worked gift edition at ₹699.00 with the printed box, the material margin is ₹431.59 a candle, against ₹348.09 for the everyday candle in a plain shipper at ₹599.00 and ₹331.59 for today's candle. Put the box where the buyer pays for it and it becomes margin rather than cost. For packaging decisions across retail, wedding and corporate in one design, see the one-jar-for-retail-gifting-and-corporate post; for how much of a luxury price jar, lid and box can take, the ₹1,000 luxury candle post.

Retail shelves. Shops often want a box that stacks, displays the scent and carries the mandatory information, and that protects the jar from handling. A printed box can be worth its cost here, though a plain box with a good label is worth pricing against it. Net-quantity and other labelling rules apply to what you print; check current requirements (not legal advice).

Where it rarely earns it: marketplace and website orders for the buyer's own use, repeat orders from buyers who already know the brand, and multi-candle orders where several printed boxes go inside one outer shipper anyway, so you pay for two boxes per candle. If your printed box also has to be put inside a mailer to survive the courier, its real cost is ₹45.00 plus the mailer.

A related lever is the lid: if your premium cues include a wooden lid as well as a printed box, the same role logic applies to both, and the lid version is the wooden-lid post. If the jar itself is the problem, a jar budget is set in the jar-budget hub.

What CSI can and cannot supply

We sell the plain box. We do not sell the pretty one.

What we list: the Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 x 11 x 8 cm) at ₹22.42 a box in packs of 50 or 100, the Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 Inch at ₹26.72, the 2.5 x 2 x 2.5 inch box at ₹16.80 (too small for most 200 g jars), Premium Packing Tissue Paper, Craft Paper Tape and an Air Bubble Roll. The 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box is out of stock on 4 October 2026.

What we do not: printed retail or gift boxes, sleeves, inserts or custom brand labels. Your ₹45.00 box is your printer's product; we cannot quote a cheaper version of it, and we would not tell you to change printer to save a few rupees on a box that is doing its job.

Argued against our own interest: our 100-pack of corrugated boxes costs exactly the same per box as the 50-pack (₹22.42 against ₹22.42), so do not buy 100 for a discount; buy what a month of orders needs. And if most of your orders are gifts and your printed box is part of why people buy, keep it on those orders; switching them to our plain shipper would save ₹16.50 a candle and could cost you far more in sales.

Cash and stock. Printed boxes usually come with a minimum order. At a worked 1,000-box minimum and ₹45.00 a box, one order ties up ₹45,000.00: two months of boxes at 500 a month, or about 6.7 months if only gift orders use them. Plain shippers in 50s tie up ₹1,121.00 at a time. That is a second, quieter saving of the role split: smaller printed runs that last longer can mean more dead stock if designs change, so order printed boxes for the gift volume, not the total.

Switching without surprises

A box change is a packaging change, not a formulation change: wax, oil, wick and jar stay exactly as approved, so there is no burn retest (which changes count as a revised formulation is the which-changes-count post). The risks are breakage and buyer reaction, and both are cheap to check first.

1
Tag a month of orders by roleSelf-purchase online, gift, retail, corporate. This tells you how much of your box spend is buying a role nobody needs.
2
Fit-check the plain shipperYour jar with its lid, tissue round it, box closed and taped. Ask for inside dimensions on WhatsApp; if it is tight, move to the 7 x 5 x 4 inch box.
3
Send ten test parcelsTo friends or staff in different cities, at a worked ₹60.00 courier each. Check for breakage, dents, wax surface marks and a loose jar. The breakage-versus-saving maths is the ₹20 saving vs 3% breakage post.
4
Check the unboxingPhotograph the opened parcel as a buyer would see it. Tissue, a printed sticker and a thank-you card can carry a lot of the presentation for very little.
5
Switch self-purchase orders firstKeep the printed box on gift, retail and corporate orders; move self-purchase online orders to the plain shipper. Track reviews mentioning packaging and any damage claims for two months; the perception-testing method is the customer-perception test post.
6
Reorder printed boxes for gift volume onlyNext printed run sized to gift and retail orders, not total orders.

Worked one-off cost: 10 test parcels at ₹28.50 of packaging plus ₹60.00 courier each (₹885.00) and ₹2,500.00 for new unboxing photos and listing copy: ₹3,385.00, paid back in about 12.3 days at option A's ₹8,250.00 a month. Courier weight matters too: a lighter plain box can sometimes drop a parcel into a lower weight slab, which is the heavy-jar courier post; box-size standardisation across a range is the jar, lid and box compatibility post.

This is for you if: most of your orders are online self-purchase, your printed box ships inside nothing else, and it costs more than a third of your jar. Wait if: most of your volume is gifting, corporate or retail, where the box is part of what buyers pay for; there, keep it, check the price carries it, and look for savings in invisible lines instead.

Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 x 11 x 8 cm)
The page describes "extra small cardboard shipper boxes" with "self-locking tabs", made of "recycled corrugated cardboard", "Size: 11 x 11 x 8 cm", Kraft Brown. It does not say whether the size is inside or outside, and it sits in no store collection, so use the link here. ₹22.42 a box at 50 or 100: the 100-pack saves nothing per box. Check your 200 g jar with its lid fits with some tissue around it; if it is taller than about 7 cm, use the 7 x 5 x 4 inch box instead.

Corrugated 3 ply box 7 x 5 x 4 Inch (Pack of 50)
Tab-lock 3-ply corrugated, 7 x 5 x 4 inch (about 17.8 x 12.7 x 10.2 cm). ₹26.72 a box. It suits a taller jar or a jar plus a card, but the extra space needs filling: with a full tissue sheet of void fill and tape the shipper build is ₹36.05, still ₹8.95 under your printed box. The 2.5 x 2 x 2.5 inch box (₹16.80) is too small for most 200 g jars, and the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box is out of stock on 4 October 2026.

Premium Packing Tissue Paper (50 x 75 cm, 22 GSM, set of 100)
Acid-free white tissue; the page lists "Lining product boxes for a premium unboxing feel" and "Wrapping glass jar candles" among its uses. ₹650.00 for 100 sheets; half a sheet per candle is ₹3.25. In a plain shipper it does two jobs: a little cushioning and a presentation moment when the box opens. It is not a substitute for proper void fill on fragile, heavy jars.

Craft Paper Tape (50 m and 200 m)
Brown gummed, water-activated paper tape; the page says it gives "a tamper evident seal" on cardboard (not plastics). ₹4.72 a metre on the 50 m roll, ₹4.13 on the 200 m roll, the one packaging item here that is cheaper in the bigger pack. At a worked 60 cm per box that is ₹2.83 or ₹2.48. Water-activated tape needs a wetting method; time it on your bench.

Pay for presentation where it is seen and valued; ship everything else like a shipper.
On the worked candle a plain shipper with tissue and tape saves ₹16.50 a candle, ₹99,000.00 a year at 500 a month, and the printed box keeps its job on gift orders.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells plain corrugated boxes, tissue and tape, and does not sell finished candles or printed boxes. This page still tells you that our bigger box pack saves nothing per box, that our smallest box is too small for most 200 g jars, and that you should keep your printed box on gift orders where it earns its place.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, with stock checked per listing; the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box and the Eco C1 10-pack are out of stock on that date. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured (inside dimensions, roll length, crush strength), we say so.

The ₹45.00 box and ₹70.00 jar are the reader's figures from the title. The ₹599.00 and ₹699.00 prices, 500 candles a month, label, sticker, 60 cm of tape per box, 30% gift share, 15% fee, printed-box minimum, test-parcel courier and photo cost are labelled worked examples. Frequently asked questions

What percentage of candle cost should packaging be?
There is no fixed rule; it depends on the box’s job. On the worked candle a ₹45.00 printed box is 16.8% of COGS; a plain shipper with tissue and tape is 11.4%. Pay for presentation only where buyers see and value it.
Is a ₹45.00 box too expensive for a ₹70.00 candle jar?
For self-purchase online orders, usually yes: a plain shipper does the job for ₹28.50, saving ₹16.50 a candle. For gifts, retail and corporate orders, a printed box can earn its share if the price carries it.
Do I need a printed box to ship candles?
No. A snug plain corrugated box with cushioning and a seal protects the jar; printing adds presentation, not protection. Send test parcels before you switch.
How can I make plain candle packaging feel premium?
Tissue inside the box, a printed brand sticker or band, a short card and neat paper tape. These carry most of the unboxing moment for a fraction of a printed box.
Does CSI sell printed candle boxes?
No. CSI sells plain corrugated shippers (11 x 11 x 8 cm at ₹22.42, 7 x 5 x 4 inch at ₹26.72), tissue, craft tape and an air bubble roll, not printed retail or gift boxes.
Will changing my candle box affect how the candle burns?
No. A box is outside the burn formula, so wax, oil, wick and jar stay as tested. The risks are breakage and buyer reaction: check with test parcels and an unboxing photo.

It tests a ₹45.00 printed box against a ₹70.00 jar: the box's share of COGS and price, packaging by role (shipping, retail, gifting), three priced alternatives with CSI's plain shipper, tissue and tape, where a premium box earns its keep, what CSI does not supply, and how to switch with test parcels.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Fresh Strawberries, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles, Premium Coconut Soy Wax, Soy Pillar Wax (Specially made for Pillar and Designer Candles), Tin Containers for Candle Making - 85 & 135g. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the cost-reduction advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Kaushiki Satarkar, Jaya Sawlani, Jinal Monil, Manasa GN. The reviews from Mahak agarwal, Kavitha murthy are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.
